To start the place is almost spotless and they have lots of both indoor and outdoor space. As for the food the fish is beautifully flakey, the mushy peas are perfect, the curry sauce is pleasant and the chips are nothing special. Over all it's good and I would come here again

Never known such a long wait for basic items to be cooked. Over a 30 min wait for a couple of fish and chips. Hire some more staff !!

The staff were polite when serving. The menu was as expected for a chip shop. The portion size was decent and the price matched. There is a takeaway menu and a sit in restaurant menu. The takeaway is cheaper than the sit in restaurant. There are takeaway tables inside and out then the restaurant to the bottom of these. There are toilets inside. The chips were unfortunately abit dry and tasteless at points…not like the last time we visited. The sausage was lovely however.

This visit was on a Monday 11.30 in August. There is a choice of takeaway (with tables), takeaway or a full restaurant. I choose the takeaway with seating next to the mini golf. The menu is simple and easy to understand. There are inside seats and also picnic style seating in a secluded area outside. No PVC or single use plastic was seen, cardboard, wood or composite friendly materials. The cooking area is very clean, tidy and organised and the eating area is kept as clean as possible. I have to say the server was very attentive, polite and genuinely wanted to help. I ordered the fish & chips with a cup of tea. I was asked how I would like it made and it came absolutely spot on thankfully (PG too !). I didn't have problem waiting if I wanted it cooked to order and it was worth it. Only took around 6 minutes and was delivered in its cardboard container. As I was absolutely starving after a seaside walk, to open the box and see a great portion, was a welcome sight. The fish would have filled the carton itself, length and width, but was placed on a bed of chips that couldn't disappoint. The fish was thick, solid, flaky and altogether a good quality. The batter was golden, evenly coated and crispy. |Tother with the chips which had a lovely golden sun tan, crisp on the outside and fluffy and hot inside without being greasy, this was just what I'd hoped for. You could tell these were cooked in good, clean, fresh and hot oil - they tasted great. Needless to say, I left nothing but regret for forcing it all down but to leave a scap would have been a sin. I short, there is competition all around this place within 500m but, in all honesty, if it ain't broke..... I will be back - probably too many times. Great all round place.

Up visiting my mum for her birthday, she wanted to go to south shields and have a fish and chips dinner, to remind her of time's gone by. Lovely atmosphere, lovely service, lovely fish. Thank you.

Went for lunch with 2 kids after an enjoyable experience a couple of years ago. Was hugely disappointed. Cost over £38 for fish and chips adult, 2 x kids meals at £5.50, 2 X fruit shoots , large diet coke and 2 X curry sauce and 1 X gravy. The kids meals were a plate of poor chips and 3 fish fingers on one and 1, yes 1 sausage on the other. Adult fish and chips were poor also. Fish overdone and battered too crispy. Sauces/gravy thick and congealed and not very nice. Was a very expensive and very disappointing experience that I will not repeat. Would not recommend at all. Not to anyone

Today we had 61 meals at the Blue Marlin. We brought our Sixth Form pupils who attend a school for pupils with special educational needs. The meals were prepared for our arrival with all allergies catered for and staff were attentive, considerate and the food was absolutely lovely. The pupils and staff all enjoyed it and we will definitely visit again.

Been here several times before but this was a shocker! Ordered 2 x fish and chips, mince pie, curry sauce and two teas which came to £33. Fish was okay but small, chips were very poor, greenish in appearance and a bit soggy. Curry sauce was pretty bland and lukewarm. The most amazing thing was the mince pie. How can a restaurant not heat up a pie properly? Crust was rock hard and the inside had been incinerated beyond belief. Did complain and got money refunded on the pie. Not going back again!

Popped in yesterday I got a chicken burger with salad and chips I asked the woman behind the counter no tomatoes on my burger and they didn't listen the chips were cold I won't be going back 👎

Been here a few times. Baked potatoes are very good at a very reasonable price. Other meals are equally as good and fairly priced. Restaurant is very clean and staff are friendly and efficient. We always eat inside due to the seagulls who can bother you, but that is to be expected at the seaside. Definitely recommend this restaurant.

Called today for 3 chip portions .stone cold I said they were cold so he went to change them which he wasn't happy about then put the others in the other side got new ones and they old ones had been mixed in with the hot ones . How hard is it to serve hot chips

We used the takeaway option for lunch. Our fish and chips were cooked perfectly and without too long a wait. The portions were generous too.

Great little place, I'd recommend kids fish bites and chips, which is an ideal size for an Adult.

Stopped off for chips today and £3 for basically scraps. Add to wait for new chips to be cooked which is fine, however, there wasn’t one thing I’d call a chip in the portion. Wish I’d checked the reviews first but I thought how wrong can a fish and chip shop get chips 🤷‍♂️

Very great always! I am a fish and chip fanatic and this always held up well! Always nice workers who are there and I love as always the food the seating is better in the larger part of the blue marlin!

Amazing food, ordered the cod and chips,an extra portion of chips and extra batter. The food was made freshly and was piping hot. The portions were a decent size and well worth the money. The staff were polite and friendly. We ate inside and found it to be clean and comfortable. Will definitely go back again.

First time in South Shields. We knew we wanted fish and chips so we headed for the seafront we're we stumbled across The Blue Marlin chippy. From the main road it looks like a small chip shop with a few tables but head to the back and there's a huge seating area with views. We ordered 2 fish and chips (£9.95 each) and a curry sauce. The fish and chips were some of the best I've had in a long time and the curry sauce was the best chip shop curry I've ever tasted. Blue Marlin gets a 10/10 from me and Mrs BennyDorm. Cheers.

Always visit Blue Marlin when on South Shields, get money worth, quick service, obviously not so quick when it's busy, staff friendly, and always clean.

Average fish and chips, ok price. Service ok although he lass didn't really look like she wanted to be there, food arrived fast at the table and was hot. I've had better fish and chips though.

Hello there I review food and this place by far had me questioning existence for week straight. This because I forced to eat green chip there by bald man threatening hit me. It was like I was back in my home country Iraq. I only come to South Shields for mini holiday as one of wife suggested this but it ruined my experience due to the post traumatic I now have from bald man.

Walked in was looking at the menu and noticed the lad behind the counter just walking around the kitchen and serving area coughing his lungs up no face covering and no attempt to cover his mouth. I said to another member of staff should he not be covering himself and just got stared at. Didnt even bother to order after that, absolutely disgusting behaviour especially when people are vulnerable over winter. Vile. Avoid.

Visit to South shields can only mean a visit to The Blue Marlin, Cod and chips with a cup of tea fresh from the pan, awesome 👌 highly recommended on a rainy day in December. Good quality, nice staff, and clean, happy customers 😀

Overpriced, dried chips , staff too laid back . Didn't come out of kitchen for nearly 10 mins to serve and looked bored

I would recommend this place for indoor fish and chips. The fish was excellent, chips were good at first but they seemed to become chewy very fast for some reason. They had the door open which was quite cold when we went. Fish and chips was served instantly which was amazing and I've never experienced it served this quickly before.

We had a stroll in the evening for some chips and found this chippy 😊... We managed to get a table on the very front. We ordered the food ... Chips, a hot dog and a slushie for myself. Fish, chips & peas for my boyfriend. It cost £19.50 which was quite pricey to what we received 🙈

Visited here with my partner, had 1 portion of fish and chips with beer batter onion rings, and she had jacket potato with chicken tikka. Fish and chips were amazing the fish was massive with fresh crisp batter and got a massive portion of the best chips I’ve ever had ! The jacket potato was a more than enough and what looked like a full tub of chicken tikka on it came with a side salad and a portion of coleslaw which was a nice surprise. Service was very quick and all the staff were amazing very well presented, all wearing hats and gloves, it’s nice to see hygiene is high on there priority list.

If I could rate a place 0 starts I would, not only are the staff all 18 or younger but they all have no idea what the he'll they are doing. Nor do they know how to act professional all running around acting like lunatics. Majority of the food at this place is left under the heat box for hours unless you see it come from the fryers, they are rats in the garage not far from the establishment and that mainly because they don't know how the keep the back of it clean. Honestly avoid this place at all costs if you like your stomach. Previously employed by this absolute disgrace of a business

Visited the restaurant today and was not disappointed. The food was great, and the staff were very attentive, and the hygiene top-notch. As soon as a table was left, the staff were there straight away to clean it

Portions are child size for a hefty price .but very tasty I have to say .I got a half fish and chips ....it was a half tail end about 3inch long and very very small Portion of chips .wife wanted a large fish only...it was about the size of a frozen cheap fish from asda ..but again it was tasty .I actually thought they gave us child's meals and complained. But nope they where ours

We visited this place yesterday ( 06/08/23 ) for lunch and unfortunalty it turned out to be a pretty appalling experience. The place was nice, well presented and the food looks decent on other diners plates as we walked through so we thought we'd be ok. Nice friendly guy behind the counter took our order, nothing out of the ordinary my partner fancied a baked potato with chilli and cheese and i opted for the spam fritter and chips with mushy peas and we had a coke each, as i said nothing fancy, we paid the £21 which I thought was a little steep anyway, but made our way to the table to wait, and food food arrived 7/8 minutes which was good but at this it all went totally wrong. From the very 1st chip I knew we were in trouble as it was clay cold and rock hard and the others I tried were just as bad and that was compounded by the half folk full of mushy peas i had which again were barely luke warm. So i was already going to ask then to change my food but then my partner tried her jacket potato and it was literally ice cold in the middle and that is no exaggeration it felt like they had just got it out of the freezer microwaved it 30 seconds and shoved it on the plate. So we were really really disappointed and still very hungry but we decided to ask for our money back and try somewhere else, I went to the counter and explained the situation and asked for a refund, I was polite and i wasn't kicking up a fuss and we respectfully asked for our money back. It was the same chap that had served us 10 minutes earlier, he did looked a wee bit put out, but he disappeared presumably to see the manager. When he came back through we were told we could have a refund but not for the 2 cokes which I'd had a sip from and my partner hadn't even touch hers, I told him that was totally unacceptable as we were refunding the entire meal and we no intention of sitting in cafe drinking coke. He disappeared again, but when came back he was adamant he wasn't refunding the drinks, and then what made it even worse was another junior member of staff behind the counter decided to pipe up, which was totally unnecessary and began agreeing with her colleague and quiet condescendingly explaining to us why we weren't entitled to a full refund 'cos we'd been drinking out of the glasses' Even at this point we were still quite cool about it, still no raised voices or angry retorts we bit our respective lips and asked for the money, which even then by mistake or design he short changed us which we spotted straight away but still it was the final we took our money and left. A totally awful experience, in this instance horrible sub standard food, combined with appalling customer services mean we will certainly never ever be back and we could never recommend this place to anybody else. In all fairness there are some complimentary reviews on here as well but if you are reading this would you really want to take the risk just on the off chance you had the same experience, especially if you consider you are in South Shields and there's a dozen other chippies a stones throw away

Chips were half cook and didn't taste very nice and fish was very greasy. For the price you paid you would expect better quality. Never go back there again. Sitting area outside could do with good cleaning.

Friday late afternoon 21st July 2023 my wife purchased a portion of chips from the kiosk side within the fayre. The chips were handed over and upon putting salt and vinegar on she realised how dried up they were, she tasted one and said the chips were like cardboard, dry, tasteless and hard. The whole portion looked the same, she returned in utter disgust and asked for an exchange as they were inedible, the lady said nothing, took the carton of chips from her and threw them in the bin as if it was burden. The lady shovelled another carton of chips up, give my wife the carton and again said nothingshe said nothing, no apology or anything. This portion was a different lighter looking batch, so my wife tried them hoping they would taste better, but found they were still very dry and basically most of the carton was made up of small scraps basically as you can see from the photo, which landed up in the bin. A simple seaside snack of a portion of chips was let down by the quality of the cooking and poor customer service, and my wife vowed not to go there again.

Great staff, great food and enjoyable atmosphere. 5 stars all round. Felt welcome and looked after. Well done!

you need to be ashamed serving complete and utter poor food for that price forget it. I dont know where to start. YOU advertise photos of your menu that must be a couple of years out of date - REALITY CHECK. FISH N CHIPS £11.50. CHILDRENS FISH N CHIPS £6.95. Draught WARM pop £2 half pint or £3 for a pint. bread n butter 80p. I didnt look at the rest of the menu as we wanted fish n chips. But be advised this is really poor food. FUTURE CUSTOMERS please do not be fooled by pictures of lovely nice normal size chunky chips and a fish that looks lovely and being so big that it doesn't fit on the plate. This is almost FRAUD. those picture must be from a different era!!!. believe the ones with small , green or black-eyed over cooked greaseballs. My fish was not even half an inch thick and so small that i thought i had been given a children portion!!!! you know sometimes that you rarely will get a fish with blown up batter and there is nothing in it when you cut thru the batter well guyz - this was exactly that. now that is rare. Every portion of fish between 5 meals was appauling, size appauling, and the better oozed grease when you pressed on it with a knife. I took it back to the counter and asked is this really what you call £11.50. the bloke said yes with a smug face - really. He asked if i wanted to see the manager, i said of course. The manager came out - she was pleasant enough and thought adding a fish bite to an already poor meal would be fine. She asked if the meal was a childs portion or adults!!!! Really . Of course not i said. I was given a fresh portion. The chips were the same, small greasy and cold ( they should be warm - given that it was an immediate service) the fish was slightly larger but still did not represent what i would call fish n chips. All in All i wouldnt come back - looking at other reviews then this place will sink soon. I work hard for my money and no matter what the price of life is today - that meal fell so short of value for money and value for cooking. its a disgrace and you need to be ashamed of your local population with this, never mind tourists. Do yourselves a favour close the cafe or up your your game

when arrived the customer service was absolutely shocking, half of the workers that were on shift seemed to not look happy to be their. when me and my husband and I ordered our food our friends waiting next to us to orders theirs they lady ignored them and served other people absolutely shocking. food not nice at all. toilet floors absolutely soaking no one seemed too care. absolutely shocking will not be returning would rather wait longer somewhere else for better food

Staff know nothing about food hygiene, dirty tables and staff just stood doing nothing, they look like there would be better suited to sweep the roads especially as their clothes are so dirty! Whilst stood waiting to be served we were blanked, didn't know that I had turned into Dr David Banner ... Jesus talk about feeling invisible. Strange to see staff stuffing their faces behind the counter and even in the flipping kitchen! If you want mushy peas please remember that they are not on the inside till so because they lack the ability to improvise you have to go out to the take away hatch order them their and bring inside to eat 🤣🤣 So as far as the food goes it was ok, looking at the reviews we must have been lucky and had a fresh batch served to us, considering it's a bit on the pricey side that what you would expect. Do you have any food allergies? Well we were not asked! A simple question that should always be asked and going by all the reviews I think most people are allergic to eating at The Blue Marlin for a second time 🤣

Had fish and chips chips nice and hot fish not very thick, the batter was nice I don't know what kind of fish it was but it wasn't cod or haddock as it doesn't state on the menu board. I'll be back for the chips but not the fish..

The fish is shocking it's all batter no fish absolutely shocking! The business are thief's when you read the rest of the reviews day light robbery!! All because you don't have to rely on repeat customers you should be shut down!!

Usually go to the chippy opposite but thought I'd give these a try for a change. Had a feeling I'd regret it from the point of sale. While at the till I had to ask staff to change my tea cup because it was really dirty, napkin basket was totally empty, cutlery was dirty, condemet sachet area basically empty yet there was plenty staff pottering about trying to serve the same people twice. Ordered cod and chips, if it even was cod. The cod was so thin and DRIPPING of oil and the chips were dry and mostly crappy ends including quite a lot of bruised and BLACK manky bits in the potato. Pure disgusted at what they threw at me for the price. Will NEVER return.

I paid £3 for a portion of chips today Saturday 27 May 2023. I have never had such a portion of horrible chips, they were dry, like they had been cooked for ages, they were hard little inedible chips. I only ate about 6 chips. The rest went in the bin. I should have took them back, but after waiting over 15 minutes for them, and the queue, I couldn't be bothered to complain. I will never go there again. What a waste of money.

Not good. Only got two portions of chips to take out but 60% of them were black and threw most of them in the bin.Should not have been served.

Absolute pile of dog crap, queued for 30 mins, bread buns stale and old, chips so greasy I could fill my car engine, all chips covered with black bits, indicating oil needs changing, most of the chips bad, would not feed this crap to my dog, adding to my ban list of company's, will never ever visit this so called chip shop again.

I think I would have known if I’d moved table I said. I’ll just go and check for you he said then came back and said “not sure what’s happened but it won’t be long” I’ll just have a refund and go elsewhere I said and after a minute or so I got my money back less £5 for the coffee. Terrible customer service, I thought at least a manager or supervisor would have had a word with me and offered an apology but no! Money back and a half hearted apology from a young girl who didn’t seem to have a clue what was going on! Certainly will be avoiding this place next time I visit South Shields.

Small, greasy portion of chips made from poor quality potatoes for £2.90. There are far better places in Shields to get a bag or, in this case, a tray of chips. Unfortunately my experience wasn't very nice. The chips were mushy and the batter on the fish smelled bad. Like the oil hadn't been changed for a while.

Had to wait ages for our food. I don't think there was any fish in my fish cake and the mushy peas were cold. Then I went to the Ladies toilet and wished I hadn't! It was filthy! The toilet bowls hadn't been washed in a while. One cubicle didn't lock and the other one had no toilet paper. Test assured, I will never go there again.

After a nice walk on the beach with my dogs I thought I’d stop for some fish and chips— bad mistake.. the quality of both fish and potatoes was very poor.. they tasted awful and very dead. Such a great location.. they need to buck up their ideas

You get what you expect from a "hole in the wall" takeaway. The children's portions are huge, too big for my kids and big enough for adults which saves money and waste. We always visit on Christmas eve and although busy they get through the queue fairly quickly. Food for us has always been freshly cooked and tasty (we order fish bites with chips and a curry sauce).

Hygiene gets zero. Filthy tables. Sandwich was full of blue mold. Staff made excuse of just started shift and was quite rude. When complaining how we could get ill from filth in place and toilets. They were arguing that that wasn't their job. Hygiene rate on window shows a 5 star. Whom got paid to state that?

i'm amazed that moldy bread (luckly sealed ) was sold all the tables were dity and had not been wiped down by supervisor till we complined I am sorry but yikes

This was my jacket potato. It was rather small and was microwaved. The kids had fish and chips which they didn't really eat as they weren't nice. The service was bad, the staff seemed more interested in themselves than customers. I assume the place employes young staff to keep the wage bill down, but that's a false economy as they are bad. I wouldn't eat here again. And would suggest if your reading this that you don't either.

Visited on the 30th August. We walked into the restaurant side of it. Place was empty at the time. Chips, bottles, food waste strewn across the floor. Alarm bells were ringing but.......... ordered fish and chips twice and a child's meal of fish fingers and chips. When the meals arrived the fish and chips were barely luke warm and the fish, what little there was on the plate, I'd say 90% batter was appalling. I'd say the worst fish and chips I've ever had anywhere. We didn't complain as seemed to be staffed by teenagers. So pointless.

We call regularly for half lots(thats a small portion of fish and chips). Probably twice a month. But on this visit the smallest portion was only the size of a fish finger. On complaining to the staff I was told that's what we get now. The price has gone up substantially and the portion size has gone down. Sadly that is the way to lose customers it will be a long time before I visit again

£24 later and leaving Hungary not impressed at all, food was cold to the point the curry was just like jelly!! Should of know by the state of the tables on entry was disgraceful and the floor was worse. The staff didn’t seem to be in hurry to do anything except laugh and carry on with each other. Wish I had read other reviews befor going in would of saved some money!!! Gutted really used to be a nice place to eat on the beach!!

Fish was Fresh Lilly white but was Tasteless don't know how they made a fresh cod not taste like a fresh cod also both the Cod and Chips were very greasy way too much oil made me fell sick only ate half of it waste of £8.50 if you are at the pleasure beach please find a better fish and chips shop and avoid this one or you will end up sick 🤮

Used take away service for fish and chips. Now the saying goes if the place is full with locals it must be good, queue never stopped! Although meal cost £8.50 the portion was a good size and was hot.
