I can't fault the service on the day. Great food, very polite and very patient waiter with a very indecisive child ordering! Great that he managed to crack a smile and a couple of laughs. The food arrived on good time. Advice for owners - I wish there was a cheaper option for kids burgers. £10/£11 for a 5 year old and two 7 year olds was crazy. The portion size was probably on point average with adult meals. The kids would have been fine with a plain burger (£5-ish) (chips or salad) £1.50 upgrade for cheese, bacon ect. £33 for 3 burgers that only got half eaten. Most other establishments have kids rate (aged 12 or below) for burgers and a small handful of chips/ sides. Service was very good but I can't mark "very good" when I don't agree with the kids prices/ portion sizes.

First of all, this place is NOT permanente closed. We’ve been wanting to come for dinner here for years, but our visits haven’t coincided well with opening hours. This time around it finally did though! We were a party of 5 and everyone was very pleased with the food. The menu mainly consists of burgers and shakes. Decent prices and the burgers come with fries. The decor is very American with red, white and blue everywhere. The only thing I would say is that the music was a tad too loud and the seating was a bit hard, so you don’t really want to linger. But all in all a pleasant visit.

Very poor service. Had to ask for my drink four times and still only received it after we’d been there for over an hour and had long finished our meal. Was told there was a delay as they’d ran out of milk for milkshakes however all the tables that had come in after us received their drinks before us. Everything was slow and a bit chaotic. Food and drinks weren’t worth the wait.

Usually my favourite place to go but visited today 16/07/23. Waited 10 minutes to be seated at the "please wait to be seated" sign eventually just went and sat down as someone had come in the other door and just took a seat - must be noted that the tables were not that busy for it to warrant this. I ordered from the till however 2 tables around me waited for a good 15 minutes before getting to order one table chose to leave instead. Staff at the till stared blankly at me with no real customer service - just said "theres no cream" when i tried to order a milkshake. Waited then around 20-25 minutes for food and 2 tables who ordered after me got their food first. Food was fine as always - milkshake without cream wad still nice - expensive compared to what it use to be but understand that costs have gone up.

Unfortunately when we came in just now we were unable to try the ice cream. We sat down, and were pleasantly greeted which was an unusual surprise as normally the young wait staff are rather unenthusiastic. But we then had to wait until the server had taken somebody’s order who came in after us. There were only two tables of people so I’m unsure why were left without drinks or service. Walked out. Very disappointing as came all the way from Wick specifically to come to Blue Door. Wasted trip. When there’s two tables you really should be able to serve people in the order they came in. Went to Olive down the road instead where we received impeccable service.

Living in Caithness I enjoy our occasional trips to Blue Door, especially for the milkshakes however I was so disappointed on our last visit. It is a shame that they have gone back to plastic straws after a couple of visits of paper straws (so next time I will take my own), however, even more frustrating was even though we sat in our milkshakes came in single use plastic cups. And my partners meal came with two separate single use plastic containers for his mustard and and colesaw - surely there are better alternatives to avoid all this waste. Especially given the Blue Doors location on the edge of Thurso Bay.

We are stopping at the caravan park, and decided to have breakfast here on our 1st morning. My husband and sons each had a milkshake which were lovely and they all had the Floridan breakfast. The pancakes were light and fluffy and were delicious. I had the sampler breakfast which was tasty, but with hindsight I wish I'd had the same as them, but I will do next time. As we were waiting to pay we saw the chef cooking the burgers-a ball of mince that he squashed down flat, no frozen pre prepared rubbish in this diner!!! We will be back for a burger another day!! While waiting there we spotted some rather tasty looking chocolate cookies so I treated us to one each, they are the most fudgy , gorgeous cookies I've ever had!!

This was our second visit to Thurso and stayed on the caravan site again, five years later to the day!! The first time we stayed, I wanted to go for a burger here, but my husband wasn't interested at all. On the last morning if it first visit we were speaking to a fellow motorhomer. They sent the night before and said the burgers were amazing. Needless to say I was not happy with my husband.Forward five years and at the same site I was determined to go and this time my husband agreed. I am so glad he did. We went in and were given a friendly greeting and told to sit wherever we wanted. We chose a table by the window. The waiter came with menus and took our drinks order (only soft drinks). He came back with our drinks, a free bowl of nachos with dip and took our food order. I had a cheeseburger with onions and bacon, my husband chose a burger with onions, mushrooms and jalapenos. Both games with fries and were absolutely delicious and piping hot. Then my husband had a Rocky road sundae and I had the most gorgeous raspberry milk shake I have ever had. The whole meal was heaven. Do not hesitate to go if you find yourself in Thurso.

What a lovely place for a relaxing unrushed lunch. Great burgers and what a choice! I don't like the new fashion for meals in baskets tho, I feel it's not as hygenic as plates which is what they use, and it's quite tricky to get your hands in underneath the burger to pick it up, and my hands are small! Will definately go again though as it's friendly, confortable, unrushed and of course the food is good and reasonably priced.

We found the service to be excellent. The milkshakes were excellent, The service was quite friendly and fine. The fries/chips were excellent. But the cheeseburgers were substandard. Not as good as almost any I've had in America (the burgers of which this place is apparently trying to emulate - and I've had many burgers in America as that's where I'm from). The problems with the burgers were: (1) the menu said the cheese was Monterey Jack, but it was not; it was cheddar (and neither of these cheeses is found on the typical American cheeseburger - although Monterey Jack does comes close - if only they had used it); (2) the cheddar cheese was so copious it overwhelmed the meat in flavor; (3) the Surfer Burger one of us had was described as being the Classic Burger plus the Special Sauce, but the onion on the Classic Burger (which my wife had) did not appear on the the Surfer Burger.

I walked out with my 3yr old who had had enough having being hungry and already gone through the usual supply of snacks carried, I even took him out for a walk twice as not to disturb the other customers with his hunger induced meltdown. So needless to say neither of us got lunch- 3-5 tables came in after we had originally sat down and ALL had food before us.When another in our party complained to management she was not offered any apologies from both staff or management. We will not be back and will not be recommending to anyone either in a rush or with young children.Extremely disappointed

Really disappointed in our visit today. We headed to the Blue Door Diner after hearing good reviews from friends. We (5 people plus a baby) arrived at 1215. Our drinks order was taken within first 5 minutes or so. It took a while to get our drinks. First the bottled drinks, then the milkshakes then the cup of milk for the toddler about 5 mins after the first drinks on the table. Noone stopped to take our food order. We tried to get the waitresses attention but we must not have heard. On our second attempt she said she would get someone to come take it, only to return herself 5 minutes later. Meanwhile 2 tables which had come in after us were being served food. Our order was taken 30 minutes after we arrived! We continued to wait and at 1310 I went up to the counter to ask what was happening to our order as we had hungry children becoming fractious. We were told ours was next! Our food arrived at 1315. An hour after we arrived. 2 tables had again arrived and been served in the time from us ordering to being served our food. By the time our food arrived the toddler in our group had had a meltdown with being so hungry, his mum had to leave (neither able to eat their meal). Im not going to even start with the quality of food/ value for money!!!!!! I asked to speak to manager as I wasnt happy with food taking so long and quality of it once it arrived. I was told that manager thought it was acceptable to wait an hour for food as there were five tables in at the same time as us. She also stated that the waitress had been to the table to collect our order and we had supposidly said we werent ready. Sorry but that never happened and 2 adults were telling you that wasnt true. The waitress that said she had attempted to take our order hadnt even been at our table. You embarrassed your staff further by dragging them to our table to 'see who was telling the truth'. Not once did you offer an apology or try compensate us for 2 meals that were unable to be eaten. You made out that it was our fault for taking so long to order when we had to ask for someone to take our order. Another excuse was that you have 5 orders in at the same time. You had us a table of 5, then a table of 2, a table of 3, I believe a group of 4 kids down the bottom of the diner and an another two tables of 2 towards the end of our visit (over the space of an hour). Hardly a busy service. Ive worked in hotels previously, leading busy lunch and dinner services with less staff than here with quicker turnovers. I dont normally complain and really wanted to enjoy this place bit I will not be back in a hurry. Maybe you should teach your staff to stagger orders accordingly and the hospitality mottos 'first come first served' and 'the customer is always right'.

We had not been at the Blue Door since the birthday treat disaster in February, but visitors at the house missed the milk shakes so much we decided to visit for a Friday night tea. The ladies had skinny burgers, my friend had bacon and onion with hers, the burgers were so cold the cheese made no attempt to melt. My burger was still raw in the middle and my plate had at least six black ships on it. The bacon smelt awful and the lady who had tasted it (she has no sense of some smells) was ill later that night. The menfolk had fish and chips, both complained the batter was not cooked properly so the fish was slimy and soggy inside. The plates smelt of fish..... fresh fish should taste of the sea.We asked the waitress to bring the manager to the table but he was "having his meal". At the counter the host asked to speak to the owner, but she was "busy in the kitchen".....I had seen Kim staring out the window over Thurso Bay as I passed to go to the table the manager was eating at, massing four vacant tables on the way with plates still on them with half eaten meals. The young lad just said "sorry" and walked away.It is such a disappointment for a place which started out on a high note to become so lackadazical and uncaring towards the locals who are regular customers all year round and deserve better

So I occasionally eat burgers and was delighted when my daughters suggested The Blue Door for lunch. Firstly the burger was excellent in every respect right down to the bun. Served with ultimate chips, great too. Daughters also loved theirs . Then a dilemma -to follow - homemade pancake or homemade milkshake? Solution - had both! Waddled out after that, but not till after fond farewell from the pleasant, happy staff. Top marks!

Treated kids yesterday to cake, cannot fault cakes or drinks altho was an expensive treat. It took ages to be served and it was quiet. One waitress waa to busy talking to people she knew and when we did finally get served the waitress wasnt friendly. I would go back but perhaps without kids as they got fed up. Also place was cold.

Stayed the night in a tent on the campsite and wad looked forward to the pancakes another camper had recommended. However when we were presented with two very large cold pancakes with some very hard flavourless bacon on top I was very disappointed. Even the merger supply of syrup could not save my tongue from the overpowering taste of baking powder. Service was attentive and the diner was a friendly atmosphere but breakfast was a disappointment.

We have visited the Blue Door many times for lunch. The last visit being only a couple of weeks ago. We have always enjoyed our meals, which have been served promptly. We have spent quite a few years enjoying holidays in the US and the Blue Door mirrors an american diner really well. There is an abundance of choice for milk shakes and they are delicious. But the best bit about this eatery is the service, the servers seem quite a young set but their customer service is equal to any american diner we have eaten in which is excellent, we have always found them to be helpful, friendly and efficient. I would not hesitate to recommend the blue door,

We were staying in a static caravan on the site for a few days and had heard good reviews from localsInitially we were going to have a take away but changed our minds, we both ordered half pounder burgers. I only eat plain burgers so asked for that, no coleslaw just chips. The burgers arrived but to be honest they really were very dry - actually it was 2 quarter pounders on top of each other.I did ask if they had any creme fraiche but the answer was no.We did complain to the person serving us that the burgers were dry and inedible, and also complained when we paid (full price I may add for 2 partially eaten meals)Sorry but if we do go back to Thurso at any time, we certainly won't be going to this establishment

The burger and service I had here was miles better than some of the allegedly posh or upmarket burger places that I've visited whilst in Aberdeen. Love the food here, and make a point of visiting whenever I'm North.

A welcome venue for morning coffee and cake at the weekend or an American themed evening meal. The restaurant has a beautiful view overlooking the Pentland Firth and is pleasantly decorated. The service is generally helpful and prompt and the food tasty and well prepared.

Its unfortunate I find my self leaving this review, as a family we decided rather than a take away we would eat out, why we chose the blue door im not sure and my son certainly hasnt forgiven me for doing so. We ordered drinks, we got them promptly, milkshakes are lovely. I should mention our server was great HE (only guy serving) was very attentive. Our meal however took ages at least 45 minutes, we didnt place a difficult order either!!! The place was freezing no heating felt to be on we ate with our jackets on it just felt strange not being able to relax it was so cold. The food wasnt really anything special [burger, panini and a fish] towards the end i thought my husband had a bone in his fish that he was trying to get out his mouth instead it was a almighty long hair, entangled in the batter, thats when all three of us stopped eating, never felt so sick, had it not been so dark at that end i would have taken a picture. When they asked how our meal was when we paid we said about the hair, to be met with a "oh dear i will pass it on". Now weve been and a few lunches etc but always enjoyed it the pancakes are lovely but last night between the wait the cold and the hair thats a big fail in my book. Lots of orders going for take away and not attending to the ones who bothered to come and sit in!!!!

I live near the blue door and was a regular visitor on Friday nights for fish and chips takeaway which my husband loved. We have also had many lunch meetings with various friends over the years and most recently booked a fortnight in advance for a group of eleven of us for Saturday lunch. As soon as we arrived we realised the staff were not prepared and had given our table to another group, leaving us on mis-matched table heights and two gents sitting across the narrow end of the table where extra places had been pushed in.My husband had to go and remind staff we were there (being out of sight of the counter) to have our orders taken. After 40 minutes he got his latte and one lady got her bottle of coke, my hot chocolate arrived after the meal was finished and had been sitting out for a while as it was cold ( had asked for it be be double steamed so the mallows melt) When the waitress came with the meals we did not recognise what she was calling them so that caused some confusion, and the first meals were finished before the last one arrived. They did say there was a delay with milkshakes, but there were customers arriving after us who were served milkshakes before us.The front of house appeared to be running with four children working and we learned the previous front of house supervisor had left. The owners were both in the kitchen and even when I asked to see Kim she did not come out. The staff did not get a tip (for the first time ever) although they did get a bit of my birthday cake. The food and beverages are excellent quality and value for money and if it was anywhere else we just would not return. I have been persuaded to return again soon and hope things will improve vastly.

I haven't reviewed The Blue Door yet however I have been here a number of times. I have been living in Thurso for the past two years and have just moved from the area so I feel I owe it to The Blue Door to give it an overarching 5 star review for all the times I've been. I thought about writing a long review for this place however I thought one sentence would do it and here it is:If you want one of the best tasting burgers you've ever had, The Blue Door is the place for you.One last thing, The Blue Door has limited opening hours so I would suggest checking this if you are planning on going here. It's almost guaranteed to be packed as well so booking is essential especially if there's more than two of you.Enjoy!

Had a very relaxed meal. The young staff are very friendly and helpful. The menu is limited, it is a diner so correct amount of choice, but if you like burgers, then I don't think you will find better any where. They really are terrific.

When for a burger 4 weeks a going they served us our drinks and a portion of onion rings after an hour waiting the young waiter came and apologised he did not put our order in. We had to leave as we had an appointment. The manager apologied and offered us a free meal the following week. But got there and it was closed. Just went to day got my burger witch was cold when I got to counter the American lady said it could not be cold as she saw her husband take it of grill I explained my friend agreed it was cold then lady had a go at me. To finish it of I said I would not bother my friend had her burger. As we went to pay they lady then had another go at me saying that she could charge me for my returned burger and gave me a speel on temperatures we left very unhappy will not b back

There burger menu it a favourite and there milkshakes are a must when we visit! It's a gem of a place and the owner and staff are very friendly and will do what they can to help. Great for families, opens at weekends for most of the day Friday and Saturday, busy for dinners. Would highly recommend this diner.

Whilst camping at Thurso Bay Camp Site, i popped into the Blue Door Bistro which is also the reception for the site. It's a busy little place.... the staff were rushed off their feet but coped admirably, bringing my meal within a reasonable time and a with a friendly, welcoming smile. The meal was delicious and was a really decent portion. I'd definitely recommend the Blue Door Bistro to anyone looking for a meal in Thurso. They also do take aways and food can be ordered by phone and collected later. Really nice place, really nice staff.

Excellent service, food, decor and views. A mix of Chilled music and a posh dining vibe. The smoked fish chawder was amazing with fresh warm bread. The sea bass was 2 huge fillets, big portion of new potatoes and broccoli. No room for afters but sure they would be just as good. Definitely recommend.
