I ate out with a friend at the Blue Ball Inn on Friday night. We both opted for fish and chips with mushy peas and tartare sauce. The batter was light and crispy. The fish had succulent thick flakes. The chips were crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside. The portion was big but we both managed to finish it. The meal was scrumptious. Service from both the waitress and Christine behind the bar was fantastic. As well as the meal, I had 2 pints of Timothy Taylor’s Landlord which was lovely. My share for the meal and drinks was about £20 which was fantastic value.

It’s quite a while since we’ve had Sunday lunch in Malton but there was never any doubt where we would be headed when we did. Booked for 1.00PM and was surprised to find it a bit quieter than usual. The roast choices are lamb, pork and beef at £9.50 a head. We both opted for the roast beef which is served with roast potatoes, Yorkshire Pudding and onion gravy accompanied by a dish of mixed veg. As always, the portions were enormous. Thick slices of tender beef. (Knowing this would be the case I had forgone breakfast in anticipation). Couldn’t fault any aspect of the meal. I wasn’t sure I had room for a pudding but my missus decided she would try The Eton Mess so I thought cheese and biscuits couldn’t do any harm. (If you are ever just peckish the cheese and biscuits would make a more than adequate meal). Puddings are £5.50 each and with a glass of wine and a couple of pints the bill came in at just over £41.00 and was well worth it As always, the landlady Christine was friendly and welcoming and the service was top notch. Just one request. If you could add it to the menu one day, Alison loves roast chicken!

Spent a week in the area and end with a meal here. Friendly and welcoming pub. Somewhat quirky in its layout but it’s an old building. Landlady out front was lovely and hubby can’t half cook ! Paella delicious, otters had chicken and leek pie - half a pie ! And very generous portions on scampi and lamb chops. Deserts equally as good, banana split and hot puddings. Great prices were a bonus - cheaper to eat here than a lunchtime deal at your local pub chain. Toilet clean and tidy If I were being critical there is no parking and we had elderly parents with us. Dropped outside, parked nearby and 2 min walk back to the pub

We came into the Blue Ball pub Saturday midday to watch a football game on BTSport. So glad we did as we enjoyed great beer and cooked food. My husband had a really good paella with lots of seafood. My fish and chips were great too. There’s a friendly atmosphere in what can only be described as a proper pub with a good range of draught beers. The two televisions were discreetly placed so as to allow those who wanted to watch the football or horse racing could do so without impeding other customers. We will be back.

With its tiny central bar cum kiosk serving a satellite of small snugs, this unique pub is an absolute gem. They have a very good range of real ales as well as cask beers, lagers etc. They also serve food, but we have yet to sample it so can’t comment further. Service is welcoming and very good and the ambience in the little snugs is cosiness at its best. A great pub to visit and arguably the best in town.

What a lovely lovely pub. We had Saturday at Malton on the basis of its food capital of Yorkshire tag and sure enough in the daytime there are lots of eateries, food shops, bars, tea shops etc. Great. However I fear that the recession has hit Malton come the evening and we found it hard to get in the relatively few options that there are. So we wandered to a less than pretty looking pub that had an average menu displayed by the door that we had seen earlier. Well, the welcome was fab. The rooms are proper historic and the food was excellent. It restored our faith in the food capital of Yorkshire claim! I had the sirloin steak, which was cooked to perfection (medium-rare) and was a real tasty piece of meat. Excellent chips. The other meal was steak pie chips and gravy which was superb. Obviously supplied by a local butcher. All lean meat. Piping hot. Excellent. I rarely see my wife scrape up and find a pie that’s not got SOME dodgy meat in it, no matter how little. Good ale too and acceptable red wine. So as I say, don’t judge this book by its cover! Please give me a helpful vote if you found this useful. Thanks.

The landlady is very rude and has no manners. She was very abrupt to me and my wife when i asked for chips instead of new potatoes. I didnt know it would be such a big deal. She said i had to have the chips aswell as the new potatoes and pay ontop of that. i thought she was joking. nup. On another occasion she would not put the football on for us whilst we where eating. It was a swift abrupt "no" and she just stormed off. I thought she was taking the pish. Funnly enough, the football was on the week before whilst we ate, and i had to put up with some idiot there F'ing and blinding next to me for 45 minutes whilst i ate with the missus. I wasnt to bothered to be honest but she didnt seem to giva a .... On another occasion we requested if we could have a extra yorkshire pud for the kids but again it was to difficult for them to do so i just gave them mine. Her reason was that she had none left which i know was bull as we had pre booked and 2 of our family couldnt make it for personal reasons, so what where they going to have then? The dining area walls are plastered with alco pops and beer from the late nineties when it used to be a popular place. Im not kidding either, go and look for yourself in the top bar, where the pool room used to be.You could probably taste it if you licked it :0 Filthy as hell. If i could give a zero i would. Found this quaint little pub by checking TripAdvisor, well we weren't disappointed either. We parked in the very small car park at the rear of the pub, walked passed outside tables with umbrellas and into this fantastically multi roomed establishment , and it is really old, very small with a bar the size of a phone box! The lady serving was really friendly and chatted away to us as did the locals , couldn't have been made more welcome. We chose our food of a large chalk board which the lady brought right to us , we both chose the homemade steak pie chips peas and gravy, it was half a pie absolutely huge servings, my husband fought and managed to eat all his but I couldn't ! But I must say that we both agreed that this was the best steak pie we have ever tasted the meat was all lean it was cooked perfectly the huge chunks of meat just melted in your mouth, homemade chips and fresh peas, you couldn't ask for anything better, We will be returning of that we are positive

Not here, you get a friendly welcome from staff and customers alike. Fine beer and imaginative menu for diners. I was torn between seafood paella and haggis fritters..the paella was crammed with shellfish, amazing and very good value. Chef really knows what he's doing. We all loved the whole experience. Fortunately, and long may it continue, the interior of this fine Yorkshire pub has remained untouched. It is a place where you can sit and chat; whether in your own group or with the person sat nearby. The beer is deftly poured and clings to the glass, as it should, as you slowly draw from its depths. CAMRA recommended and well-deserved it is too.

We didn't try the food but the menu looks good if you want basic pub grub. However, the beer (Timmy Taylors) was good, the landlady was very welcoming (not always true in small local pubs) and there was a nice atmosphere.

Ended up in here on Sunday while stopping in Malton on the way home from York and hoping to get a Sunday lunch somewhere. Having been turned away from another pub in the town because it was full, we chanced upon the Blue Ball instead.Turned out to be a RESULT - a proper pub, with decent beer (a nice pint of Landlord, well kept and well pulled) and the best Sunday lunch I've had in ages. There was a choice of three roast meats - lamb, pork and beef. I had beef, my partner lamb. Lunch arrived with proper gravy and Yorkshire puddings (homemade) the size of footballs which were, quite honestly, the stuff awards are made of. The meat was really well cooked, the veggies (served separately in a bowl) spot on, and the gravy was frankly awesome. We left two clean plates. The pub itself was a delight too, multiple small rooms like a proper country boozer and really friendly service from the lady behind the bar who's name I unfortunately didn't catch.Top food and decent value at £7.50 each for a good plateful. Highly recommended.

Turned up with 12 of us on a Sunday afternoon for a Sunday lunch. The landlady squeezed in to a private room. Sunday lunch was excellent, one of the best pub lunches we have had, and the sticky toffee pudding was superb! Will definitely be back, thanks!!

We stopped by here to watch the football, it didn't look much from the outside but inside the maze of rooms is fascinating. We were allowed in with our dogs and partook of the Sunday roast which was lovely. The real ale was great and the landlady worked constantly to welcome us, by the time we left we felt like part of the family. highly recommended!

Had a drink and a bar meal here before going to a function. A proper pub with proper bar meals. Plenty of choice. The food was a good as you would get for twice the price. I can only echo the comments made by previous reviewers about the place. If only there were more pubs like this still around.

This place is well worth a visit!!!! From the outside u will not imagin what its like inside a PROPER olde worlde pub with lots of little rooms off the bar, where you couldnt wish to meet a lovely landlady Christine & her chef husband Gary!!!!The welcome you get is outstamding and they can't do enough for you, there is a great selection on beers, lagers, wines etc.The food is to die for proper pub grub but be warned you need to be hungry as Gary certainly does not SCRIMP on portion size!!!I would recommend anyone to try The Blue Ball you will be back again once sampled the Ales & Food.

Husband, son, myself and Border Terrier Oscar came across The Blue ball on Sunday evening whilst padding around Malton looking for an evening meal. We were all welcomed in and found a little snug room adjoining a bar full of locals having a fine old time. We ordered our food knowing it may take an hour but were happy to wait. There wasn't a dull moment and the landlady made us feel welcome and included. Our food arrived on the dot and it was lovely. The sirloin steak, rare, was just as it should be and husbnd and son's burger and scampi were equally well received and three clean plates (apart from a few too many chips) were left as testiment, even Oscar left no crumbs from his gravey bones (treats from the landlady!) Lovely. Please don't change. Thank you for our supper and the entertainment.

This really is a beautiful place to have a drink and sit on a hot Saturday afternoon whilst in Malton. Small rooms and a central bar just add to the character of this old drinking house. No music, flashing machines or TV's here. Just excellent beers, good conversation with the landlady and a cool environment. Food is served and smells really good, but it was for a pint that we had ventured in to this hostelry. Tetley Bitter, Taylors Landlord and Great Yorkshire Yorkshire Blackout. The latter two being on good form and enjoyed with relish (the non-food variety!). The lovely Lucy graced us with her immense presence, looking over each and every table to ensure no food had been accidentally left. What a Great Dane, and what a great day. I'll be back!

Ordered the Brie & Bacon and cranberry Sandwich, it was missing the Cranberry so may have been the most tasteless thing I’ve ever ate. Ordered a pudding, the crumble, came with about a shot size of custard. This is the same for the Inn Collection Kings head, thinking it’s a recurring theme to avoid these pubs ! ☹️

Visited with family. There’s a really nice feel to the place. We arrived early for dinner and spent some time in the bar (with wood burner) then ate went in the dining room which has a lovely view of the valley. We chose snacks and starters, as the menu looked so good. Snacks were gougeres (perfect), an aranicino with nduja mayo (freshly made) and Yorkshire Rarebit, this being enormous. We had two starters - monkfish “scampi” and a magnificent and imaginative venison faggot dish. Our mains were: chicken burger and fries for our daughter; Toulouse sausages with puy lentils and celeriac remoulade; and partridge with cabbage etc. The sausages were spiced with nutmeg etc and tasted light not heavy. For the first time in a very, very long time we were defeated by the portion sizes and couldn’t manage a pudding. I’ve seen a review suggesting the portions were on the small side - all I can say is that this absolutely definitely wasn’t the case with us. We loved the food; clearly a chef thinking seasonal and local. Excellent all round and I had to look twice when I got the bill - £113 for 3 or about £37 per head. Unbelievable value for money, particularly for food of this quality.

We were wandering around Malton looking for somewhere to enjoy a spot of lunch and stumbled across the Spotted Cow, which is right next to the old cattle market pens. We decided to give it a try and we’re so pleased we did. It’s an amazing 16th century building with oak beams and looks very original and unspoilt. We ordered the “Fish and Chips” which were excellent. Crispy batter on the fish and chips cooked thoroughly unlike some places who tend to under cook them, with a side of mushy peas. The prices are very reasonable and it’s good value for money. The owners are new and have only been at the helm for 3 weeks. If they regularly serve up lovely food like this, they’ll do well and we hope it works out for them. On our positive experience today, we’d highly recommended trying the Spotted Cow and don’t think you’ll be disappointed.
