Friendly nice pub in Lewes. A choir was on there having a drink and singing broke out!

Visited the Black Horse Inn for a Sunday Roast, the food was nice but not a nice atmosphere. Upon ordering our food we were shouted at for not ordering a proper drink and were refused a glass of water. This made us feel uncomfortable and in hindsight we wish we had left there and then to save us sitting there the whole time feeling as though we were being watched. Don't recommend for young people, felt targeted.

After coming back to Lewes having been away for a fair while, had a good time of it in the Black Horse, didn't get to try the food, next time perhaps. Old enough to remember when the Pewter Pot, otherwise known as the Meridian, and also, even further back, the Windmill, were going concerns up at this end of town.

Great ale, sensibly priced,unobtrusive TV sports & a proper boozer's atmosphere.

Good pork scratching selection and handy that it shows sports. Dog friendly. They had my dad's favourite beer on tap so that wins points.

Nice traditional pub. Friendly landlord. Nice pint of Harvey's. Only there for two drinks.

Went to watch a Rugby match, arrived at 755pm used the toilet. Came back out to order food and right as I reached for the menu it was snapped out from in front of me. I asked if I could please order food, and was told "No, the kitchen is closed". About 10 minutes later about 8 meals were walked right past me. When I asked if maybe they could just get me some chips, again I was told no and that I could go get takeaway somewhere else and bring it in. Not being from the area and not having cell service I was unable to look for food locations, so I had to go walking to find something. I walked for about 25 minutes trying to locate food for myself. Finally I located another Pub (Amazing service was provided there) and returned with my food. The game was into the second half by this point. I was dissapointed and dissatisfied with the service there even while just ordering pints.

Great roast dinners, friendly staff and lovely interior. Shame about the terrible soft rock on Sundays!

First time visiting here today, we all had a lovely roast diner! My daughter and I had the vegan option, and it was amazing! Thoroughly enjoyed our food and will be back again

Lived in lewes all my life, like the pub. Don’t get me wrong, it’s a great place to watch the football. But I ordered 2 poke bowls for me and my gf and both were missing ingredients and very poorly cooked. The menu stated there would be avocado and pickled red cabbage. All we got was raw cucumber and raw carrot with rice. When I went and spoke to the staff I was told there was nothing they could do as the kitchen and bar were ‘separate’. There was no way to take our complaints further. So we were basically conned. We didn’t get what we ordered and we couldn’t get any reimbursement - even though we’d been charged for things that never arrived. Harveys was good tho.

I can attest to the good pub food and standard of drinks.

Amazing food, fresh and super tasty. Highly reccomend the chicken teriyaki poke bowl, superb!

One of my favourite pubs in Lewes. A proper freehouse and a really great community feeling. Absolutely excellent ales and an open fire, and dog friendly too. The kind of pub where you can instantly feel welcome, even if you are just passing through. Good for quiz nights, and yes, a big screen for footie as well. Open fire in the winter.

Went Monday 17th July for lunch. No food as chef on holiday! Bit disappointed 😞

A lovely pub and always a great place to visit. So happy to be able to go and grab a beer in the garden. Cant wait to be able to drink inside again as well.

I’ve meant to write this for ages.. every time I come here the food is always exceptional and the staff helpful and friendly. If I could give it 10 stars I would!

Superb Sunday roast. Had one chicken and one vegetable wellington. Very tasty and very filling. Very well cooked. And a good selection of real ales. Definitely coming back

Sunday dinner was amazing, only thing we went for so can't really comment on anything else but atmosphere and decor was lovely, had a great seat in the window which was lovely and the footy was on and they allowed dogs 😁

Visited Friday teatime. It was busy and full. Staff were helpful and got served quickly. Food was great and prices good value. Very pleasant all round experience.

I came here with my boyfriend as we were visiting Lewes. Sunday roast was very good (lamb for him and pork belly for me). The only negative note was that they did not accept American express. Apparently only we were not allowed to, as the table opposite used it. On our way out we checked the door and yes there was American express as an accepted payment method.

I was just here for one night as I had an early meeting to be at. Wanted a drink locally and something to eat. Lady at the bar was friendly. Food was great and cooked well, plus more chips than I could manage. The chef asked me how my food was which is always nice. I can recommend this local pub. Can't stress enough how important it is to support our local pubs in the UK. Use it or loose it people!! X

Decidedly average. They had a sign "be wise sanitise" in the gents bathroom, pity they don't adhere to it there. The Sunday roast was average to say the least, actually not sure how you can serve a burnt Yorkshire pudding and bisto gravy, the best bit was the carrots and parsnips. The one saving grace was the sports ball wasn't loud.

Great pub serving a good choice of real ales. Two screens in front bar area showing sport, so a plus or minus depending on your viewpoint. Note they were both on mute which meant conversation wasn't a problem. Ample seating and a back bar area that I didn't venture to.

Accidentally ordered myself a warm beer on the hottest english day ever. But thats on me.

This review is both personal and professional. I've known Declan who runs this Pub for many years. We met when he used to run the Elephant and Castle. He is delightful. I had a poor eatery experience at the Black Horse in the past but on this occasion a friend of mine had a completely different experience. I ordered a chicken caesar salad with a hard boiled egg. Accommodated by the Chef. My friend had the ribs, coleslaw and on recommendation the curly fries. Sounds simple I know but delish. It loses a star poorly on the fact that they don't serve NZ Sauvignon Blanc. Otherwise service with a smile. Thank you.

Great atmosphere and an amazing roast dinner.

I stayed here, the last stop on my long journey south, from Hope Road, to Brighton. My bike made friends with The Black Horse, and, in memory of this important journey, I have a put a picture of The Black Horse as my profile. It was sad for my bike and I to leave him, but I needed to catch my boat to find Ryan.

Great local buzz. Make it a regular. Enjoy the characters and crack.

Called into this pub halfway through a 10 mile walk. The barman was very welcoming and made some good recommendations for drinks and food. The halloumi burger was the best and the Brockmans gin very moreish (hic). My husband also enjoyed the Black Horse beef burger and the Pinot noir. Will certainly be back 😀

A fabulous, cosy pub with outdoor space if it's sunny. Great food including Sunday Roasts for meat eaters, plus veggies/vegans, loads of great beers, wines & spirits! Also tea, coffee & hot chocolate. A huge TV & a warm welcome from the cheerful staff!

Just returned from this lovely pub. Had a wonderful Sunday lunch with friends. After a long walk. The food was superb. We all had roasts. Very friendly staff and we were well looked after. We will be back for more !!!!

Shame we only popped in for a 'quickie', great choice of ales & lagers, pleasant traditional surroundings & a helpful barman. We had a look at the menu, which appeared to be farely priced & varied. We'll spend longer next time.

Loved it! My friend and I were the first in for an early lunch, we both had amazing fish & chips. I loved the blues/jazz music being played. Staff were friendly and service was quick. All in a lovely, proper pub!

Super friendly and relaxed pub with knowledgeable staff. Food was yet again amazing. A small but worthy note: possibly the best nachos I've ever had anywhere.

Booked for Sunday roast which serve between 12-5 arrived at stated time 3.30 only to be told no roast left

Beers were good staff OK battered pollock was big on batter with tiny fillet in this massive encasement.

Friendly pub with a relaxed atmosphere

My friends and I were walking for hours in the rain, all our bags and clothes soaked through. A man by the name of Moz was incredible kind and accommodating. He sorted us with hot drinks and gave us a corner of the pub to rest and dry. The food we had was absolutely amazing and generous. The chilli bean loaded fries and pecan pie was absolutely delicious! We can’t thank him enough for his kindness. It was the moodboster we needed and exactly what we needed in order to continue our pilgrimage.

Like all pubs at the moment it's totally artificial, good service well served beer and one way systems can't hide the problems of wearing masks, being unable to mix and chat or sit at the bar. The countdown to normal service is taking way too long.

Great quick service in the garden and a fine pint of Only With Love brewery's 'Twice As Nice' juicy pale ale, a refreshing cask brew which was so nice I tried it thrice

My friends and I came across this pub today after a lovely 10 mile walk around the surrounding countryside. The owner was lovely , really friendly, directed us to a fab sunny , sheltered garden where we had some drinks and great food. All very reasonably priced , nice and fresh , service great , we will definitely return again and would highly recommend

When we got there we had a very nice welcoming fire. The staff are so lovely and are very nice and welcoming. The food took 20mins when the food came I was very impressed lovely chips a generous portion really recommend going there!!!

Brilliant takeout burgers (we had a beef & a chicken) with fab chunky chips. Very well packaged, got good home still hot, & everything recyclable. What's not to like??

Amazing Sunday lunch roast roast beef I asked not to be pink it was amazing my husband has his pink, fab veg and Yorkshire’s. Great staff. Made for a lovely afternoon!

It's a bit difficult to rate a pub in the present climate but the beer was good and not expensive. Worth a look, especially when normal services are resumed.

I had the beef roast dinner and it was gorgeous! Roast beef with to die for vegetables! Amazing gravy , it's the best roast I can remember. With a pint of Harvey's incredible!

Proper pub only 5 mins walk from centre. Food so good that locals are pouring in, even after the official closing time. Great beer, and can hardly believe there are at least 9 types of pork scratchings - in Sussex ??!!!!

A Greene King pub but offering beers from other breweries as well. Standard pub fare done well with excellent Sunday roasts. Sport on TV but not intrusive.

I went to the Black Horse for my Birthday lunch two days ago - a table of 10 - organised with no trouble and a very busy Sunday Lunchtime. Food bloody marvellous - no waiting came on time, portions ginormous. Looked good. Tasted even better. The manager and waitress both professional, warm and very human - what more could you ask from a pub? The prices aw all at pub prices, not fancy restaurant prices. Came out well full and happy. Rest of pub full of happy drinkers. A really nice old pub, tastefully refurbed so it's not a boring brown pub anymore. Really can't find a bad word to say about the Black Horse - but if you had asked me two or three years ago I'd have cursed the Black Horse - but that was before this new management took over, Total change and all for the better. Their new chef cooks like an angel. Better than my mum, Will definitely be going back. As soon as poss. PS I'm in a wheelchair so it was a pleasure to see their disabled loo is a proper disabled loo, not some unused cupboard round the back somewhere.

10 of us had lunch Sunday for my partners birthday, the quality was excellent huge portions and really cooked nicely. The service was excellent and the staff were all extremely pleasant and very efficient. Will definitely be back again

After being let down by another Lewes pub for our pre-booked Table, the Black Horse made space for our table of 9, made us feel so welcome and the roast was to die for. Tender meat, perfect chrunchy veg and great big yorkshire puds. Our table had a verity of tastes and we were all overwhelmed by the quality of the food! Thank you guys for everything.

Went with family for Sunday lunch in this unpretentious local pub. It is the real deal - lots of locals, decor that has barely changed in decades (not a hint of Farrow and Ball paint anywhere, thank goodness), and full friendly people, and their dogs.Sharing starters are £6 a head , ranging from terrific, melt-in-the-mouth calamari to garlic prawns and sticky ribs.They are substantial. Mains included the usual roasts, as well as fish and chips and stuffed marrow. The portions are ENORMOUS, and come complete with roast veg (3 types), Yorkshire pudding and sharing plates of creamed carrots and broccoli gratin, as well as extra jugs of gravy. Don't expect to make it to the puddings.It was a great find and we'll certainly be back.

"Do you allow dogs?""Let me tell you - and please tell anyone with a dog: this is a dog friendly pub," replied the barmaid.Iced water, doggy treats, lots of attention followed for Sid the Spaniel."Are you serving food?""Well, we closed the kitchen - it's too hot - but the chef's sitting there [next to me] if you want to ask him if he'll re-open it."Yeah, go on mate, I'll do you some food," said a cheerful fellow. An interesting-looking menu was produced which in addition to regular 'mains'-looking options around £12-13, had d a varied range of dishes at £6 each or three for £15.“These are small dishes?""They're not tiny, if you know what I mean."He advised us that two would be more than adequately fed by ordering three between us, particularly if we ordered cajun chicken and potato wedges (one option) which we did, along with marinated jumbo prawns and Korean beef taco with kimchi. My other friend had the burger.Not only was it more than enough, every single thing about the food was outstanding. The prawns were exquisitely spiced; the beef tender and nicely charred at the edges; the kimchi spot on; the cajun chicken delicious and the potato wedges perhaps the best I've ever had. An amuse bouche of belly pork, done I believe in a balsamic-based marinade, was brought out for us to try. You will NOT be disappointed. This guy can really cook. He's genuinely talented.A big thank you to all the staff at the Black Horse.

Excellent food at a very reasonable price. Lovely staff and friendly company. Especially recommend the outdoor BBQ and the lamb kofta. Will definitely return soon
