Not open when it says it's open

Arrived on Friday at 1.50pm and was told cook had popped out for a bit, we asked how long and were told not sure but could wait, waited few mins in bar which was full of cooking fumes so went outside with a drink, no one appeared so gave up at 2.30pm. Advertised food until 3pm !!

We came across this pub on the A4 and decided to pull in as we were ravenous. The car park was along from the pub and behind a house. The staff were nice and friendly, which was the only positive. There was a strange smell in the pub and it was freezing! I kept my coat on, as it was that cold. The menu was really disappointing for vegans; 3 options and all what you'd expect (cop-out). I opted for the vegan burger which said it came with lentils/chilli on top. It certainly wasn't what was served - 2 of those frozen veggie burgers with breadcrumbs and sweetcorn! And no chilli or lentils. They were soggy. The side salad was so dry, it must've been out of the fridge uncovered for hours. The chips looked and tasted like they'd been fried for an hour. I was not impressed at all. I didn't see the point in complaining as what could they do? Bring out more dry salad?There was nothing else they could offer me and I certainly couldn't stomach another mouthful of another burger! It wasn't cheap either. I wouldn't recommend this place

Best Sunday roast in the calne area so far! Other pub chefs in the area should go and see how it should be done. Very busy pub which caused a few problems for the staff seving but food was hot well cooked and well presented. We will be back for another Sunday roast and we will also try a meal on a work day. If you are in the area you should go here for a meal you will not be disappointed.

Staying in Wiltshire for a few days,came across the Blackbull near to our Air b & b 1st Day had the Sunday roast..it was great & lots of it ✅ 2nd visit 😁 we had the steak 🥩 and chicken burger🐓… again lots with it. Great service & value ✅ Will return 👍

This is an excellent place to eat and drink a very friendly place.

Had a roast turkey dinner here today 13.10.24.and have to say it was outstanding the roasties and gravy was out of this world

Highly recommend. We received a warm welcome. The food was reasonably priced, freshly prepared and delicious. There was lots of it too. The service was friendly. We will definitely be back!

Returned again to this establishment and still has 5 Stars top on Food, Service and Atmosphere, definitely a place to visit and to take your family and friends.

The service was good and was very helpful when asking questions about dairy free stuff. On to my meal I had a burger with chips. The burger wasn't the best it was greasy and would just fall apart looked at the burger, and seeing how greasy it was put me off, I couldn't finish it. My partner enjoyed her meal tho.

Fantastic Sunday roast here on 26th Fab .. nice cozy round table by the window.. packed pub and lots of people eating some great looking dishes. We had the pork and Turkey both came well cooked and some massive tasty Yorkies.. the cauliflower cheese was awesome too.. would def come back.

Very local bar which was awesome The waiting times for food / service were unacceptable though. We spent close to two hours there for a simple main dish only. Also dirty inside , could use some good cleaning and we saw them filling Heinz mayo containers with a cheaper brand.

We called up at 11.30 on Sunday morning asking if they had any availability for Sunday lunch? Within a hour we were eating! Great food great service and fantastic portions!

We'd just finished a running event and needed somewhere to watch the euro final, wow what a great choice, made to feel very welcome by everyone and they even put on free pizza and some of the best roast potatoes at halftime, thanks again, Pete, John and Stu

Tuesday lunchtime was quiet but still we were made to feel welcome . The food was good too. Will definitely be back.

Poor food.. steak and ale pie, yuk.. gloopy gravy, tough meat, and tasteless.... lasagne more pasta than meat and sauce. If the chef is away... dont cook!!!!

Lovely cosy quaint pub, superb food and nice attentive staff

Went here for Sunday lunch, and the overall experience was great with some lovely food. The reason for a drop in a star was due to the lack of attention to detail. There were cobwebs in the corner and on lamp shades, and the cupboard/border around the room had a layer of dust on it. There was a small confusion on menus as we were all given a different variety of menu so had to question which one was the correct one. Lovely food, great portion sizes, and no trouble when we asked for some more gravy. The only thing I would say is that it should list what the food comes with, as I was not expecting cheese on the burger as it listed everything else bar cheese, we shouldn't have to ask. I feel that as a restaurant/pub, there should be salt and pepper pots and not be in small paper sachets. However, none of this would stop me from going back as it was great food, a lovely atmosphere, and the staff were polite and friendly.

A lovely village pub in Cherhill. A perfect place to stop by for lunch for visitors who come to see Cherhill White Horse and the Lansdowne Monument nearby.

We had a great lunch here following a walk. There were 16 of us and the staff couldn’t have been more helpful or efficient. Our dogs who were on the dirty side following the walk were welcomed too and also got special attention with water and treats. It looked like there was only one person behind the bar but he worked so hard to make sure we were taken care of, taking orders and serving drinks efficiently and with a smile. Most of us had sandwiches served with chips. The bread was super fresh and the Sandwiches were crammed with filling. The chips were piping hot too! It was all delicious! Thank you so much for making a group of mucky walkers feel so welcome and making our lunch such a great experience

Nice pub with a traditional feel. The beer was excellent and the food, though quite plain (suits me perfectly) was also good. The service was exceptional. Nice car park which is behind the pub, entrance is signed off the main road. Recommended.

Went in for Sunday roast I don't normally eat them as usually disappointed but smells coming out thought give it a go wasn't disappointed great meal had pork with all trimmings and a large portion of cauliflower cheese very filling all cooked really well definitely go again

Booked here for Sunday lunch. We both had the Roast Pork and an extra side of cauliflower cheese. The food was lovely , nice & hot and the crackling was perfectly cooked. There was a very friendly atmosphere in the pub and the staff couldn't do enough for us. We have already booked our next visit.

We visited on the 16/9. The food was absolutely amazing. Service was excellent. I would definitely recommend. We will be returning.

Really great service here, we booked in advance for 12 people. We were able to preorder our mains to make the whole process so easy and relaxed. Food was amazing and was served in good time and very hot, I'm sure we will be returning :)

Really yummy grub, good beer, just slightly chilled for summer. Great atmosphere and knows their customers by name. I went with my brother to his 'local' and it was great.

Great service- friendly- good food

Lovely landlord. Unfortunately the batter on our fish and chips was dreadful. On the outside it looked amazing but the batter was very thick and soggy on the inside and left most of mine.

This place is amazing, the food is phenomenal. The best pub I have eaten at. The service is spot on and the atmosphere is great too. Very friendly, extremely welcoming. Even the locals welcome you here. Andy the owner is a wonderful man. I would 100% recommend coming to The Black Horse for food and drinks. This is now one of our locals through the week and weekend. You won’t be disappointed 👌🏼

Lovely dog friendly pub! Had a Sunday roast here after a walk up Cherhill monument. The staff were so friendly and even gave our dogs a bowl each of veggies and gravy! The food was delicious, we will definitely be back again.

Great local pub on the A4, friendly staff, good menu, wood burner, nice atmosphere. Only criticism would be that beer choice is limited and not local (Doom Bar and London Pride) - would be great to see some Wiltshire beers on sale (Broad Town Brewery, Ramsbury etc).

Landlord couldn't do enough. Food good. Only one tiny thing. Could have heating on. Curry needed to be on plate, landlord bought plate out as requested. Thank you

Always welcoming, walked there on a rainy Sunday yesterday and with the pooch and had a superb Sunday lunch, very fairly priced and on point service, will be back!

As Sunday pub lunches go, I think it'll be hard to beat this. Service was excellent and the food even better. I opted for the Scotch Egg starter, which was served hot and cooked to perfection, with a nice soft yolk. The beef main course was presented with a large bowl of mixed vegetables, which had been cooked to just the right texture (not soft, but not hard). With that, I was given a spare gravy boat and a pot of horse radish. My eyes were bigger than my stomach, so I also had the cauliflower cheese. I'm ashamed to say, I couldn't eat it all, just because there was so much!! I didn't leave feeling short changed at all. I'm looking forward to a return visit for an evening meal sometime in the near future. If you're looking to impress someone, this is the place to take them.

I stopped here during a long hot cycle - bar staff were very friendly and welcoming. As well as a couple of pints of Diet Coke, they were also happy to fill up my water bottles with ice cold water! Food smelled good - but I was not on a food stop or I would have happily ordered something. Great place…

Rating this pub is not easy. While I cannot see any reason NOT to give it five stars...other than its beer and food prices...it is not a pub I feel inclined to rush back to. There is nothing radically wrong with it, it just doesn't linger long in the memory The landlord was affable and efficient...but that's what landlords are supposed to be. The decor and facilities in general cannot be faulted. It has a garden at the rear which is just as well as it is directly on the A4. It just lacks character. I knew it as a boy when I delivered papers in the village and on a Saturday, at the end of my round, I sold spare copies of The Pink Un to the customers. It was a pub then, not just a restuarant with a drinks licence. Crisps, pickled eggs, even small pork pies and little else in the way of food But it had character then. It is handy to Avebury and its menu may even be marginally cheaper than the pubs there. But the pubs nearer Avebury are far more interesting.

Lovely pub which is dog friendly. The staff were amazing and attentive. Very accommodating towards us and the dog. The food was top class and very reasonably priced. Highly recommended as a pub to sit and have a beer or to have some food at too.

Was taken here while visiting my sister in Box, Wiltshire. A really nice pub with a friendly atmosphere. Had a drink and a Meal both excellent. Manager came and spoke to us was only to pleased to answer a question asked by my Brother-in-law. A place that is well worth a visit if you're in the area.

After a walk up to the White Horse carved into the stunning Wiltshire hillside, what better refreshment than perfectly served Doom Bar ale and a top quality Sunday roast ? We particularly liked the hot (spicy, not temperature) horseradish sauce served with the beef. Others enjoyed the home made curry and the huge burgers. Desserts were proper homemade English classics like bread and butter pudding and Eton Mess. Service couldn't have been more friendly and helpful and our four legged friends were welcomed and will probably never forget the unexpected meaty treat they received. Many thanks to the whole team for making a long overdue family reunion so enjoyable.

Excellent staff, friendly, efficient & professional. Nice menu & comfy interior. Very good food. Good drink selection. With it being a little bit more up market, I might have expected the cup of tea I ordered to come in a pot with milk on the side rather than served already in cup with milk.

My days, great atmosphere and hosts, new chef is very much appreciated, excellent menu. Will see you again soon.

I really enjoyed my lasagne chips garlic bread and salad. It was really really tasty. The flavours in that lasagne was outstanding and it was made from scratch.Very nice staff they are Autistic friendly as I have Autism. Good quality portions.They have a great Menu to choose from. I definitely will be back for more lovely yummy tasty meals.
