The Black Horse in Norwich

Five of us went on Mother’s Day for a roast dinner. The food was very good although two of the party reported slightly firm roast potatoes. We sat inside where the service and atmosphere were good. Haven’t been here for over 30 years and it’s still a great pub.

Even it's close to the road ,the interior and garden remain a quiet and comfortable public place with lovely and good atmosphere for enjoying some drinks and delicious food.

Went for a lovely Sunday roast. Staff were very accommodating and friendly as well as lovely food. Will definitely be back!

We booked a table and was served by a young girl called Isabella. Very friendly staff who served us with drinks and our meals for 5 persons. The food quality was excellent with plenty of choice on the menu. I can recommend the sirloin steak. Prices are on average but the quality is of the best standard. It is worth booking a table as it does get very busy on a Friday. Again Isabella was very friendly and professional. Would we return..of course.

Used to be a decent outside space, but it's all blocked off at the moment so if you want to be outside where it isn't so loud you have to sit with the smokers which isn't ideal. Currently no stouts or porters at all, not even in bottles except Guinness. They usually have at least something on tap that isn't ghost ship (about as light as an ale gets) Maybe they'll be better later in the year?

Found this place around Halloween and have been back a few times since. Great atmosphere, really good value food, staff are always lovely and its somewhere well worth a visit..

Lovy local pub with extraordinary food. The duck & potato rosti is to die for!

The pub was very busy (a good sign) when we arrived without a reservation, but they fitted us in. The staff were very attentive and friendly, and the service second to none. The food was excellent. My husband had the sausage & mash - “well tasty” - and I had the pasta of the day, really delicious. Desserts - crumble of the day, and sticky toffee pudding - were also sumptuous. Only disappointment was the lack of real ales, they had also run out of Newcastle Brown. We were so impressed, we returned the next morning for breakfast. A full English, and the Eggs Benedict, both really good (as expected!) The waitress recognised us from the evening before, and said she had actually done her best to obtain a Newcastle Brown from their sister pub, but because it had been so busy she had been unable to go and collect it. We still appreciated the effort. Dogs are welcome in the pub, which is old, with a wood beamed ceiling, and a real log fire. We would certainly visit again next time we are in Norwich. Great find!

The staff are SO helpful and they are all.over any food intolerance or allergy issues. They couldn't have taken better care of us and, despite it being busy with a really large group when we visited, they were attentive throughout. And the food is absolutely delicious! What a great find. Highly recommended.

We arrived early for our Sunday roast booking and were told to order drinks while we waited. When finally seated, we were given a tiny walk-in table, despite being told on the phone we’d have a sofa or high table. (We choose on the phone The high table.) When confronted with the altercations , The manager was dismissive and just plain rude, saying that “was literally the only table they have. “ , outright denying what was said—insulting our intelligence despite two of us hearing the call on loudspeaker and the fact there was numerous table around us empty with no reservations, as clearly shown on my photos and Meanwhile, other guests beside us were given a “choice of seating”, yet we were ignored. Needless to say we left here rather confused and disappointed “. They had more than enough time to rectify , I will not be returning and a new front of house manager would be advised. Response to you’re message: Thank you for your response. I’d like to clarify a few points regarding our experience: Firstly, when we spoke with your manager, she stated that she handled the call and even accused us of dishonesty. Now, you (the boss) claiming to be the person who in fact took the call—offer a completely different account. This contradiction is concerning and again dishonest. Secondly, we want to be clear that at no point were we disrespectful or asked to leave as you’ve suggested. We remained patient throughout our visit, and finished the drinks that we ordered, and did not act in any way that would justify the claims made in your message. In fact, the only two customers present as clearly shown in the photo i took at the time mentioned, something was truly amiss, and they too would have logged a complaint. This further supports our account that we behaved appropriately and were not the source of any rudeness. And Additionally, our review was written as an honest expression of our experience at Blackhorse Pub. The term “childish” used to describe our feedback is both dismissive again rude and unhelpful. Our review is honest fair from a genuinely odd dining experience. I’d like to add we managed to get a table at Templebar Pub, a 2 minute walk from yours where we received prompt, professional service and were treated with the respect we expected and give. This stark contrast in our dining experiences further highlights the shortcomings in how we were handled at Blackhorse Pub. We hope you will consider these points and address the inconsistencies in your account. Thank you for your attention to this matter.

Really busy day yesterday (Sun 9) but the food and the service was about as good as ever. Boy they work hard and continue to deliver the best Sunday roast in Norwich. Thanks Guys!

Booked for our daughter's birthday lunch, and was not disappointed! Food was cooked to perfection, Beef was rare and full of flavour, service on point and very attentive staff. Only downsides were the 3 ladies that arrived next to us slating the staff because they were on a small low table (even thought that had been informed of this when booking) they actually had a negative impact on our experience because there were rude (and can't bare that as people just doing their job the best they can) they did not care that they ruined other people's experience! Shame on them! Other downside was I did not realise they did doggy roasts so will DEFINITELY be returning with my dog in tow...

Awful Service & Disappointing Experience I wish I could give zero stars. We booked a table at The Black Horse expecting a pleasant evening, but it was anything but. Despite having a reservation, we were left waiting with no explanation. When we were finally seated, it was at a cramped children’s table—completely unsuitable and uncomfortable. We politely asked to be moved, but the manager showed absolutely no care or concern. The attitude was dismissive, and customer service was non-existent. The entire experience felt chaotic, and the atmosphere was terrible. A truly disappointing visit. We won’t be returning, and I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone looking for a stress-free meal. Then two people came in and were seated immediately at a normal table. Embarrassing ** In response to your reply** It’s disappointing to see such an unprofessional response to honest feedback. To clarify, it was indeed the manager we spoke with regarding the table, and we were offered either a high bar table or a sofa, so I am left confused if we spoke to yourself or your manager as she advised we had spoken to herself. At no point were we rude to the staff, nor would we ever be. We respectfully expressed our disappointment and were never asked to leave. We finished our drinks without issue, and there was no animosity whatsoever. In fact, upon leaving, we even said goodbye to your team. As someone who works in the service industry, I strongly believe that guest experience should always be a priority. Reviews like this should be seen as constructive feedback to help improve and coach teams, not as an opportunity for conflict. Wishing you all the best at The Black Horse. I sincerely hope no one else has the experience we did today. On a positive the temple offers an outstanding roast dinner and a couple of minutes walk away!

Fantastic family birthday meal roasts cooked to perfection . Very busy on arrival however table was ready for us . Service was polite and professional great interaction with my daughter who's birthday it was . Good allergen information and we were all happy with our meals . Would like to point out the 3 poor reviews all put on after a table of 3 acted in a very immature manner after they could get a bigger table stating they were sat a child's table ? . If they had spoken in a more polite manner listen to what the manager was saying rather than demanding more under the threat of posting a negative review maybe they would have been more successful. However as stated the pub was busy on our arrival and the tables were being relayed for more bookings later on hence the need to book well in advance for a Sunday dinner .

Went with my sister to enjoy some good food have just got good hospital results. That lady that served us was brilliant. We where somewhat elated and silly, she not only adapted the menu to cater for our needs but entertained or humour and had some great one lines to add. Made the afternoon a lot of fun and giggle. Food is lovely, yummy. Will go back again. Totally recommend.

Absolutely loved this pub. The two ladies who greeted us and looked after us are a credit to the place. So refreshing to get such a good service with upbeat staff. The pub itself is a lovely "proper pub" with noise and an atmosphere-how it should be. The food is fantastic, a little pricey for a pub but well worth it. 100% will be going again.

We went a year or two ago and the roast was great but they didn’t have a dessert menu and the waiter verbally told us that they had a “double chocolate brownie” failing to mention the peanuts all over it, and the vegan option was a “chocolate torte” with no mention of it being coconut flavour - really rubbish and an obvious allergy issue but we booked it for our Christmas lunch with our friends this year since the roast itself was delicious. Server asked for our drinks order while we were being seated and 2 of the party were in the toilets… then took about half an hour to come back for a food order. Asked for a high chair twice, took ten minutes to appear. Food was slow to arrive, I asked twice for apple sauce which never materialised. Roasts were mostly fine, my pork was a bit dry and the roast potatoes were some of the worst I’ve had… really underwhelming. They came and cleared plates, asked if we wanted anything else, we ordered four desserts. Three came along with three spoons - reminded them we had ordered a brownie too and she said “oh yeah” and brought another spoon. When my dessert came everybody else had finished theirs and my brownie was placed on the table along with a warning that we’d need to be gone within ten minutes as they need the table back. Somehow it had taken them 2 hours and 20 minutes to serve our roasts and get desserts on the table… being rushed while also receiving the slowest possible service was bizarre, then they cleaned the table and brought the card machine over while I was still eating… The staff had no communication amongst themselves and no idea who had already dealt with us (or not dealt with us) and the whole thing made it such an uncomfortable, awkward meal…

The portions here are massive. The server was really lovely, very friendly. Outside in the garden during the summer was great, inside is brilliant too. You'll have a fab time here.

Went at 6.15 on a Thurs night in December - the place was overcrowded and extremely noisy - staff were struggling to provide adequate service. Impossible to have any sort of conversation unless you were shouting -and many people were! The food however (when it eventually arrived) was very good. Would we go back? Not based on that experience...

Busy pub, but too many damn yappy dogs. Personally I found our meals were far too salty. I'll skip in future.

Stopped off here for a breakfast ,one of the best English breakfast we had.food was good quality,cooked just right,service great nice and friendly.sat by an open fire on a cold winers day.

Fantastic pub meal for 6 of us on Saturday, made particularly special by the excellent member of staff, Fiona who found us the perfect table and looked after us with great charm and professionalism. Thank you we had a great time

Had a roast which was tasty. However it was very expensive and lacked vegetables. Drinks are also expensive. My other Complaint was the amount of dogs on the evening we went it was raining so wet dogs on the floor made it a bit smelly. Also I was on crutches and had to manoeuvre around a dog on the floor which the owner found amusing.

Food was tasty but not worth the price. We had roast which lacked vegetables it was no better than Luke warm and the Yorkshire pudding was hard. The waitress was spraying tables next to us which got to the back of our throats. Drinks are also expensive. There were dogs in the eating area which I found unpleasant also I was on crutches and had to manoeuvre around a dog sprawled on the floor which it's owner found highly amusing. All in all not a great experience

Lovely Sunday early evening atmosphere. The service was excellent and the Sunday lunch was sublime. We really are lucky to have this pub on our doorstep.

Found this pub by accident when looking for somewhere to lunch. Lovely food and very nice service.

Enjoyable meal. The menu was a bit pricey and the vegetarian options are limited, but the vegetarian aranchini was delicious!

Second visit to the Black Horse, both times with the little one. Cracking food both times and the staff are great too. I wish I lived a little closer as this would 100% be my local.

It's always disappointing to go to a place that people talk so positively about and end up leaving feeling like the food was poor and the price was too high. There were not very many options for Vegetarians and there was only one option for Vegans. The Vegan option was the same as the Vegetarian option but with less items (Still the same price). The vegetarian was basically the same as the meat option but instead of meat you got a slab of polenta. This was apparently supposed to have Pepper and Leek in it, but they were very difficult to find. All of this ended up costing considerably more than expected for such an average meal. My wife, who asked for the Vegan option, asked if she would be able to have something to replace the items taken off for being vegan, instead they actually gave her one less potato than the Vegetarian option. The whole thing was just poor. I wouldn't usually give one Star reviews, but this was a terrible meal.

Superb roast from the team at the Black Horse; hearty without being overwhelming so I was able to gently, but happily, roll down the adjacent earlham street on my way home! Atmosphere was a steady throb of Sunday lunch lovers, but the fully booked tables were suitably looked after by a genial and capable team. Book with confidence!

I visited The Black Horse in Norwich for one of the best Sunday roasts I've had in a long time (honestly so good!). Such a great atmosphere, the management and staff were all so lovely and happy to be there. Definitely visit if you're in town, it's such a vibe.

I live in Spain and was visiting my family who live not far from this venue, we went here for drinks as this is their local. Looks good on the outside but inside it is like a Tardis. The pub is vary spacious and has a very large outdoor seating area as well, very homely and cosy inside and is very popular as the pub was packed. We sat outside and although it was a cold night we sat in the heated area and was very warm. Also in the outdoor area is a trailer that in the summer serves frozen cocktails and it's something not to miss, so I am told. There is an excellent and well stocked bar. All staff very friendly who although professional liked a laugh and a joke. We were a little hungry so we ordered some chips, well I have to say that the selection to choose from was nothing I had seen before. It made it very difficult to choose but on good advise from my great nephew we ordered the steak fries with peppercorn sauce. These were amazing and very tasty and a good choice. I was told by my family that the food is very good here and next time I visit the UK I will come for either lunch or evening meal. A great evening with my family, thanks.

Met up with the lads for a drink and some grub. The staff were very accommodating to our fussy eater and laughed along with our bad jokes, and they made it a very nice relaxed atmosphere for us. Food was really good quality and was served relatively quickly, so no complaints there. Menu is simple enough and all well priced same as drinks, good variety to choose from and decent prices. Also, it's nice to see pool table in a pub now and then so that's a bonus. Big car park for the unfortunate designated drivers. Will def come again, had a very nice evening.

The black horse is a fantastic place to eat at the moment. The chicken supreme was supreme! Menu is varied and fabulously cooked! I would whole heartedly recommend. The service could be better. I didn’t find the waitress particularly attentive. I went to the bar and collected my drinks (sat poured waiting on the bar). However I do love the place and that hasn’t put me off

came here twice for a sunday roast; both times utterly gorgeous, cooked to perfection, perfect portion, pricing worth the value of meal, the staff are all so friendly and welcoming, we sat outside both times throughout october and the heated area beats the cold making it a lovely homely autumn ambience. my only criticism is the lack of vegan yorkshire pudding / substitute (you pay the same for the veggie roast and the vegan roast and in my personal opinion i think there should be more serving of roast potatoes / something to make up for the lack of yorkshire pudding or reduce the price to equal portion sizes). other than that, highly recommend! 🤍

Wonderful suprise! We were absolutely delighted to stumble upon this fantastic pub in Norwich, when you are only here for a short time it is so gratifying to realise we had made a top choice. Food was the best meal we had enjoyed in a while, service was a joy, dog friendly and a pleasure from start to finish.

The Black Horse is such a cute pub to visit with good drinks, lovely beers on tap & very tasty food. The beer garden is amazing for sunny days & a 10% discount is offered to students & NHS card holders. I’d recommend a visit!

Amazing experience. Food was fantastic and the best part was having dogs around as they are dog-friendly. Only slight downside was felt a little forgotten about sat outside but have eaten inside before also, and the service was amazing.

Didn't eat there, but had staff drinks, and the place was great, good atmosphere, and great staff, and I never knew they had a garden area, what a great place to meet up with friends, no need to move to another place, they were great, my only issue is the price of the drinks

A Belter of a Pub, A lonesome Northern Monkey was very Happy. I was staying in Norwich solo on business and took to trusty trip advisor to find a nice pub with good food. Boy was I glad I chose The Black Horse. I was welcomed by a lovely lady called Molly who was the height of hospitable. Checked in often, but not too often, the perfect Hostess. I chose the White Wine and Garlic Prawns, then The Good Old Staple of Fish and Chips. Oh My Days, both where amazing, but the Fish & Chips where unbelievable, mushy peas where nice and minty and sweet. Hats off to this Pub, a gastro if ever there was one. And Thank You from The Northerner. I will be back. That’s a Deffo.

An excellent pub. Only 3 handpulled ales but all were good. A number of lagers and ciders on tap. The food was lovely and the staff appeared to really enjoy working there which made for a fun, relaxed evening.

Visited for a quick lunch with a colleague. The food, drink and service were all faultless. Staff seemed happy and all knew their jobs despite being busy.

Did not start too well with two women with an out of control dog continually barking. Queue to order food but it had been a nice day and lots of people out for food and drinks. Sadly one meal was served fairly promptly but it was a full half hour later after complaining the other two meals and side dishes. We were told it was because the kitchen received two orders although we had ordered and paid in one transaction.

Food, alcohol, coffee, dog friendly, quiet, can't complain in the slightest. Staff are lovely and genuinely just a nice place to sit on a Sunday and chill.

Although we just had drinks after visiting the Plantation gardens further along the road, which is a must visit, by the way....I found this pub well presented, friendly welcoming staff, lots of room inside and out, a large car park with an over spill opposite. I would certainly have eaten here, if time allowed!

Was disappointed that the pulled brisket 'burger' was actually meat in a brioche bun with burger type additions. Also ordering everything at the bar made it seem less of a relaxed lunch vibe. The garden area is lovely, staff were friendly however overall an extremely underwhelming experience.

Recently came here for a dinner with some Mum friends. Lovely to see the pub busy on a week day. 6 of us had a lovely time, food was great and service fab too. We didnt feel rushed at all even though we took our time to order and decide. Waitress had good knowledge of the menu which was super helpful. A great venue for catching up over lovely food and drinks.

Just had a delicious meal here with great customer service, looking forward to going back. Dogs allowed in as well, our puppy loved it!

Awful quiz night every Wednesday just to annoy the neighbours it seems. Way too loud, pissing off the locals and driving customers away.

Great pub atmosphere but with a classy feel. Well presented food, bright colour's and decent flavour. Service was prompt and staff upbeat and nice vibe all round. Thankyou for a great night And to the chefs also, who don't get enough appreciation sometimes for the work and skills.

Food disappointing my chicken and asparagus pie had no asparagus little chicken mainly liquid inside with spinach? Result today terrible diverticulitis attack can't eat spinach. Friends Paella was odd 2 tablespoons of flavoured rice piece of cooked chicken and 2 pieces of Asparagus she really was upset for £17.50. If you order something on the menu expect it to be as stated.

Came for Sunday lunch and received a warm welcome from the front of house lady and taken to our table. Drinks orders were taken promptly, but the waiter took 40 minutes to return for our meal order. We were disappointed to find that the well-reviewed Sunday roast is off the menu until autumn. Our food, a chicken burger and a kofta burger, arrived after another 35 minutes. Both dishes were satisfactory but not exceptional. Overall, the experience was disappointing.

I visited this pub for lunch with my sister having had it recommended by a friend. It is close to the city centre but has a car park and garden which is useful. The menu is interesting with a good choice of varying dishes to choose from. The staff were super friendly and a pleasure to chat to. Overall a very pleasant lunch.

1st visit, went late afternoon with son and girlfriend, sat outside. Very impressed, so friendly and inviting, great atmosphere great food and overpriced Will definitely return.

We had booked our tables over 2 weeks ago. When we arrived we were told there would be an hours wait. Thats not acceptable when you have pre booked. After complaining we were served quicker. The food was average overpriced for what it was. Also the introduction of a pool table and noisy teenagers did not go down well with an evening meal. This pub has lost its appeal. Still gets packed but with a different clientelle.

I was interested to read a recent review that said "My search for the best place in Norwich for a Sunday Roast took me to the Black Horse on Earlham Road. Booking is essential as it was very busy." as I was hoping for a roast on my visit this weekend, but they're no longer available. May this explain why it also wasn't busy? Service was good but menu was poor (imo). Very meat-heavy. I'm a pescatarian who tries to eat veggie as much as possible, but the options were so few and so so unappealing that I opted for the fish and chips instead. Fish was fine, though it doesn't state on the menu that there's a lot of lemon in the batter. This would have been good to know as I have a mild allergy. Chips were few but chunky (more so than they look in the picture). Unfortunately the size of them meant they weren't well cooked, quite dry and cool at the centre. Normal sized chips would be better for this dish. Wouldn't go back for food, just think it falls short of the mark in a city that has some good options. Would definitely visit for a drink though.
