The Black Horse in York

Great pub looking a little shabby beer garden tired worn out tables seats relatively new noisy extractor fan in the beer Garden. However great staff and good selection of ales/ cider/alcohol free. I understand it’s awaiting new management so I hope this pub gets the TLC it need to bring it back too it’s past glory. Maybe even open up the kitchens again and serve some light meals again possibly.

Me & my two best friends saw a boarded notice of a band that was playing at this establishment that evening. The band was called The Mother & they did not disappoint. They played an array of music which had the people singing, dancing & clapping. A really good band & a good night. 👍

We come here often with friends and our dogs. It's a friendly, relaxed pub with nice beers on tap and nice staff who are always happy to help. They host gigs on most weekends too, which is cool!

Nice place to go for a good honest pint also has a car park so easy to get into york dog friendly to winner winner

There is no food served here. Just beer and wine. Lovely atmosphere. Sat for a while and finally approached bartender to be told no food here. Service is for locals only

Thus pub is a grown up pub , no students no families just older people out for a pleasant time . It's calm and cool on the inside with an older worldly feel , and outside is a large seating area that's pleasant with flowers but not over the top . There is no food I believe but a good choice of lagers , real ales and lots of ciders - and the prices are very reasonable as its so close to town . The owners ALWAYS come across as very professional and polite - and on certain nights they even throw on a live band - I've see the signs but not actually been . For many years I drank in the Brigadier Gérard a Sam's Smiths pub just up the road but all the rules in there are ridiculous- so if you want to find a hidden gem where you can have a pleasant time with your friends - the The Black Horse on Monkgate is the one !!!!

I went to the pub last night for the quiz. My only complaint is that the quizmaster, who is an ambassador for the Pub when presenting the quiz, had a question completely wrong when he said that the attack on Pearl Harbour was in December 1940 when fact it was 1941. When I told him of his error, he answered me with a load of fictional history. If he can get this fact totally wrong, how accurate were his other answers. It spoiled my evening.

Lovely homely pub with polite, friendly staff. The toilets were clean and the locks on the door work. They have a lovely outdoor area, there is a seating area outdoors under shelter with heat lamps. Came to see the band Dufflegoat here, they were amazing!

A bit of an odd place , swathed with Black Sheep marketing yet they don't sell it , staff/ landlord was quite put out when asked about it ....as if I should have known ! No real alternative either , mainly blonde beer or IPA. Couple of drinks were ok , went for IPA , but can't say I would rush back , shame as it's local.

My twin brother Stephen and I were pub hopping around this part of town when we decided to drop into The Black Horse Pub,a pub we always look forward to visiting on any trip to York we take. This is a classic British pub,housed in a fantastic solid brick Victorian era building,the interior is as traditional as it gets ,a solid wood serving bar,dark wood features throughout,great decor and furnishings,tv's and big screens to enjoy the sport and plenty of seating options spread throughout this pub both inside and outside in their beer garden,it's just a great pub to unwind in. We were here on a Thursday late afternoon,pub was very busy ,a quick study of their real ale's which is very well thought out and we both opted to have Ossett Brewery pale ale,these were served in pristine condition,we luckily managed to get a table were we just kicked back and took in the great pub we were in. My pale ale was really good ,a crisp,well balanced pale ale,hints of toffee,a delicious aroma and aftertaste with a slight bitter finish to it ,a classic British pale ale served in a classic British pub. We both really enjoyed our pale ale's in here and our visit before we moved on and when we are back in York hopefully very soon we eagerly look forward to revisiting The Black Horse Pub again . The Black Horse Pub is easy to locate along Monkgate. Opening hours are; Monday to Friday,open from 3pm. Saturday & Sunday,open from midday. A great pub,well worth checking out if you're in the area.

Great beer choice, fantastic entertainment and a reasonable price.

Comfy and clean but the atmosphere wasn't there, however I was there quite early in the evening so may just have missed their good times

The Black Horse on Monkgate is one of the many pubs/bars and restaurants which we went to on a six day city break in York. The Black Horse pub is housed in a superb Flemish style building and dates from 1897. The pub itself was once a Tap&Spile many years ago but reverted to its original name later on.The pub has a superb interior with many interesting fixtures and features and a superb outside beergarden.With superb seating options throughout the whole pubs interior and knowledgeable staff it's a very good pub to relax and unwind and enjoy a few beers. We had just been to the fantastic Brigadier Gerard further up the road and on our way back to the city centre we visited this really good pub.This pub was very busy when we visited here but with ample seating options you don't have a problem in finding a seat. When here we had an Ossett brewery beer each which were superb and well priced. This is an excellent pub and is well worth a visit and very easy to get to from Monk Bar bus stop its a minute's walk.(This is my first review of the Black Horse). Opening Hours. Small, local, friendly pub with good beer.

Traditional pub with a good variety of well kept beers. Friendly barman who was happy to give us directions to the next place we were visiting.

Nice pub just further out than most which gives it an average amount of foot traffic. Live music has just started out again when writing this review so don't have any opinions on that matter tho they do have bands on quite a lot. Conclusion, small pub with a good atmosphere and kind staff, lovely for a quite drink, or a loud one with the live music, definitely and overall classic pub 👍

Took my fiancé to York as she’s never been. We stayed in a small hotel next door to the black horse. The hotel recommended the pub for the parking ( £5 per day absolute bargain) We had a few drinks on the sat night on our way back to the hotel and again on the Sunday afternoon. The staff and owner was very chatty and very hospitable. Couldn’t do enough for us. The drinks were excellent and reasonably priced. Extremely clean with an amazing beer garden. Will definitely go back and highly recommend this fantastic pub. Many thanks wayne & jo x

My twin brother Stephen and I were wandering around the area around Monk Bar when we chanced upon this superb pub and what a great find. Walking in and I knew I would enjoy my visit here, a traditional authentic pub,great interior, superb decor and furnishings including a cool looking serving bar and plenty of seating options spread throughout this pub both inside and outside in their beer garden. We were here on a Saturday afternoon, greeted warmly by a very pleasant member of staff who served us a real ale each,we opted to have a pale ale from Blacksheep Brewery, these were served in excellent condition,we just kicked back,chilled out and took in the great vibe in this busy and bustling pub. My pale ale was outstanding, a crisp hoppy pale ale bursting with taste,very easy to drink,a real ale style I really enjoy. We both really enjoyed our real ales in here and although our visit was only fleeting for a first time visit we were totally impressed with The Black Horse Pub . The Black Horse Pub is easy to locate on Monkgate,its just past Monk Bar. A great pub ,well worth a visit if your in the area.

I would say this is the best curry house in York for the quality of the food. The value for money is also superb.

Went to see Clash City Rockers..if you haven't seen them get yourself to their next gig..The Black Horse staff are great, nice friendly pub..good selections of beers, and they had some York Gin..well who knew!!!

A fabulous night watching the silents

Nice clean old school boozer which keeps low abv beers really well. Just outside the walls which means it's a little quieter than most York pubs.
