Returned to this village pub restaurant to sample their menu after a change of chef. No longer an Italian restaurant though they still offer good pizzas and some pasta dishes prepared by their Italian sous chef. The new chef has extended the menu to include more bistro type dishes. The belly pork and beef cheeks were delicious. Service and atmosphere continue to be exemplary. Lovely to sit in their curtained gazebos or pergolas on a sunny Summer evening.

Absolutely 10/10! Me and my family have been going for about a year now and it is some of the best food and service we've had at restaurants. The servers are very friendly and polite, they have many affordable food options and lots of offers such as on Tuesdays you can get a pizza and a drink for 10 pounds (per person) which is a great price to dine out with family and friends especially during these stressful times. We will 100% keep going back!

Exceptional quality food beautifully presented. I started with the ham hock terrine which was full of flavor and came with a apple chutney also made here. My with had the prawns which were well prepared and cooked to perfection. I then had the slow cooked pork belly two pieces that don't look enormous but heck do they fill you and melt in the mouth. My wife had the hake again beautifully cooked. Only two little grumbles the chips which were well cooked had a little too much salt on for my liking. And I was too full to fit in a sweet. We will return. Oh and the beer was good and service very pleasant.

Called in without pre-booking. Very professional and friendly staff. Excellent meal - belly pork and steak & ale pie. Bit different menu which is refreshing. Would be happy to recommend the food and hosts here.

Always have a superb meal when we visit The Black Horse. Our grandchildren can be really difficult to please but they have never failed to eat every meal.

If I could give no stars I would, highly recommended apartly for the food.... disgusting!!! Got the sea food plater when it came the fish was off I had to spit my prawn out in my napkin. When I sent it back the staff where stood at the bar talking about the fact I sent my food back. I then ordered an alternative which was pizza was also disgusting!!! Wasn't cooked properly when I picked it up all the cheese and toppings fell off and was all greasy, so I couldn't eat that either! when we went to pay the manager had a go and asked what was wrong with the meal and stated ive sold loads of those and not had an issue! So I'm a liar then am I !!! Will never go back here again! Awful food, awful people!

Not sure what’s going on here… Has the chef gone on holiday? Left for good? This place came highly recommended by the hosts of the Airbnb we stayed at locally, and the five star Tripadvisor reviews speak for themselves. We were really looking forward to it. When most of the menu is given in Italian your expectations are set a bit beyond home cooked pub grub. But that’s exactly what we got. The steak was overcooked. As was the duck breast. The veg was undercooked. The thin and watery sauces were served in milk jugs. The potatoes reheated in the microwave. And these dishes were expensive… Desserts were okay. The setting wouldn’t get me returning either- a noisy village boozer with little effort at creating an ambience. Not for me.

We planned on having a pizza and a pint, but chef had to return home to Italy. So, we rolled with the pasta and wow were we surprised. Great meal for 3 and a few drinks for £50 on a Saturday night.

Went out for Sunday lunch. Never been here before. Not local but decided to try after reading reviews. Not disappointed.Staff welcoming and informative. Food was excellent. Very reasonable priced for a family of 4. All in agreement would go here again.

What a fab find. We took our 7 year old grandson for Sunday lunch. I'd looked at the reviews on here and Facebook and we were not disappointed. The staff are lovely and very helpful, and our meals were excellent and plentiful. I brought some of mine home. We were also pleasantly surprised with the bill. Already thinking about another visit when in the area .

This is a lovely little village pub serving amazing food. The staff are so friendly and nothing is too much trouble. We would definitely recommend for a family lunch including children.

Lovely local pub. Nice range of real ales . Food is excellent. We had to wait despite having reservations, but the manager’s manner and the beer flowing, ensured it did not detract from an excellent evening. I do think a better range of wineswould be enhancement, but that might just be a personal thing

We had a fabulous meal with our family. Staff were so friendly, helpful and welcoming especially accommodating to our Dad who has a disability. We preordered our meals and everything was perfect and on time. Thanks for making our stay in the village extra special .

Absolutely brilliant atmosphere, brilliant service and fantastic food- what a find. We have rented out a small property over my sons half term break in Copley which is nearby and looked for a place to eat at the last minute. I found this place off the back of a recommendation and emailed them to see if they had any tables free for the evening. I was emailed straight back to confirm they could fit myself and my family in for a table. We arrived to a lovely , warm reception and were provided the menus and almost immediately asked what we wanted to drink. They had a few deals on also for eating slightly earlier which suited. My wife and son chose a pizza and I had the seafood pasta and we were all amazed by how well cooked the food was. The service throughout was nothing short of excellent and everyone was attentive and our main server built up a fantastic rapport with our son. The cost was even more impressive and to be honest I would have happily paid more for the food that we received. This place is a gem and one we would definitely visit again.

Called in for a pint and stayed for a meal. SO glad we did. A mixed seafood platter ( seabass, stone bass, salmon, muscles and prawns) with veg and roast potatoes in a Lemon , garlic & parsley sauce. Italian beef stew in a red wine sauce with veg and the best chunky chips ever! 😋. Washed down a Moretti 🍻 Highly recommended 👌

Visit for our wedding anniversary. We found this to be a traditional pub AND an italian restraunt. Although a small menu, the quality of the food was EXCELLENT. The staff were very welcoming and the whole ambience appealing. We will definately be back.

We stopped for lunch. The pub is within easy reach of the main road and has ample parking. It is a spacious pub with a comfy warm feel. The menu offered good choices, the food was good and the service very good.

Best pizza in Darlington We ordered pizza from here this evening and can honestly say it’s the best pizza I have eaten in a long time I went for meat feast with extra fresh chill and my girlfriend opted for the hoisin duck both pizzas were under 10 pound and were perfect they obviously use a great pizza oven to create the thin and crispy base “OUTSTANDING “

We used the take out service during lockdown on a couple of occasions. The pizzas were excellent. Great selection to choose from. We were in the village after a family bereavement and the pub staff were so kind and considerate offering to help us in anyway they could. A fabulous community pub who fully deserve all the support we can give them to ensure they get through to the other side of lockdown. Thank you Black Horse team. Wendy

We arrived to have a drink outside and order a take away. The staff were excellent, wore masks and came outside with drinks and menu - I wore a mask when I entered the pub and there was an area in which to stand to be covid safe. Unfortunately it was next to a group of locals who were quite close .I was only there a very short time and was a bit concerned when one local got up and walked in the area I was standing in and passed VERY close to me in order to go outside for a smoke!There was hand sanitizer on all the tables. Our meal was very nice. I would give maximum stars for this visit BUT We visited again on Sunday and there was no hand sanitizer in the tables and the lady who served us had no mask.

Superb local real ales, the very best Italian based food we've tasted and a host who is welcoming. The Black Horse is right up there with the very best local eateries.

My family and I (from South Shields) recently visited the Black Horse whilst staying in the area. We managed to grab the last day of the 'Eat out to Help out' deal and were not disappointed. The food was amazing! It turned out the man who ran the place was actually from our neck of the woods and it was lovely chatting to him. We have been staying in the area for a short break from Cheshire andvisited the Blackhorse for my birthday. We found all the staff to be friendly, polite and attentive. The food was delicious and we would not hesitate to recommend this little gem to anybody who is visiting the area. Hopefully we will be back.

We visited twice during our stay in the area. The food was great and very reasonably priced. The staff were lovely particularly with our little boy who managed to loose his shoe down the back of the seat!! One of the waitresses took time to make recommendations to us in the area too. If we lived closer it would definitely be somewhere we would visit regularly. Thank you!

We had a early evening meal and before we even sat down the elderly waitress was close to us with her mask dropping down asking what we wanted to drink. We hadn't even got our coats off. Then it was only a couple of mins before she wanted our order. We all felt really rushed. Even before my wife had finished her starter she was clearing our table. It was much the same for our main meal. Trying to clear up before we were all finished. When your trying to relax and take in the current situation as a new experience of safety it was not nice. Can not complain about the food as it was really good and the younger members of staff were also spot on.

My friend and I visited this pub Saturday evening. I chose it because it advertised Italian meals. However I was disappointed that they did not have lasagna on the menu, it being my favourite Italian dish. There were only a few pasta dishes but a lot of pizzas. I had Ravioli which I enjoyed but whilst the portion was enough for me it would not have been so for a man. In Italy this would have been served as a starter. For a dessert I had Panacotta which was lovely and the wine was excellent. Overall it was a good meal. I did miss a bit of Italian influence in the place though!

Really nice place to eat and staff very welcoming.Easy to understand menus Fish was wonderful ( although note sure if it was sea bass or stone bass as different menus called it one or the other).Had Pasta starter Tortellidi Gamberie Capesante although didn’t look very big it was quite rich and perfect for a starter, other starter was garlic breach with cheese.Main course we both has sea/ stone bassService was excellent Would definitely recommend.

After being isolated to being at home since March this pub/ Restaurant was absolutely perfect lovely night so was able to get a table outside where all were at a good distance away from each other a delightful lady comes and takes your order food was stunning 2 3 course meals 4 alcoholic drinks £63 worth every penny will definitely be back

Wevisited for a family meal and from the second we entered we were catered for beautifully. Three courses all of which were superb. This place cant be beaten for service,quality and value. We cant wait to go back.

Myself and two other visited the Black Horse on the government scheme, everything was perfect, loads of staff and all went smoothly. The food is as always absolutely outstanding as always and even if it's not on the menu they accommodate if possible. Would highly recommend this establishment.

Myself and my partner ate here last week whilst visiting the area, we chose The Black Horse due to great Trip advisor reviews. We were not disappointed! All items on the menu sounded appetising but we both went for lasagne and home made chips off the specials menu with a side of garlic bread. Food was piping hot, really tasty and the garlic bread was one of the best I’ve had - very garlicky which is what I like.Really impressed, wish we lived closer so we could go back more often. Staff very friendly also, booked our table last minute and this was no trouble with them.

A party of 6 had dinner at The Black Horse, all the diners thoroughly enjoyed their meal, mine was particully good, one of the best Italian meals I’ve ever had. The service was good with the staff friendly and helpful, would suggest you book a table in advance to avoid disappointment as the restaurant is on the smallish side and gets busy

Lovely pub with a welcoming atmosphere and an abundance of gins. We were fast to get served and everyone was really friendly.

We visit the Black Horse at least one a month for a meal. It is our favourite restaurant. The Italian menu is very different to your average pub fare. The Arancini starter is a particular favourite of mine. Staff are really friendly and welcoming. Sangiovese at 14.95 is great value (a few bottles of that have been consumed!)

Great find for us. Was recommended by a local so we booked as a birthday treat. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed their meals, all keen on seafood type dishes. Good menu and service was efficient. Ononly niggle was coffee wasn’t that hot but overall a very good meal and very fair prices.Will return

We had the calzone and the crab and prawn ravioli in a scallop sauce which was rich and creamy, we thought the quality was great, we don't usually have starters however, we're pleased we did. We'll certainly be reccommending, thank you, we both love fresh Italian food

Last night 12 of us enjoyed an excellent Christmas meal from set menu of 3 courses. Generally the choice was for 2 courses with some opting for starters and others for a pudding 11 of us had turkey and one sea bass. Everyone enjoyed the food. Well cooked meat and vegetables were generous portions and also lots of delicious rich gravy in jugs. Starters and puddings were excellent too and beautifully presented. The friendly host was efficient and welcoming. We could not fault our experience.

Great little pub in a village location, easy to get to and ample parking.Fair choice on the menu, plus specials boards and although its lively (because it was full which is always a good sign) you could easily hold a conversation.We were looked after superbly by "Betty" not sure if that's her name but that's what she told me during a bit of banter though I can be a cheerful cheeky chap.The food was good I had the Lamb and the pudding Sticky Toffee pudding with custard (and cream, one of my little quirks for nearly 30 years) was to die for.Good value for money in my opinion and "Betty" took time out to have a good conversation with us, and at no point did we feel rushed or need to move on.Clean environment and well presented. Highly recommend you give this place a try.

Having heard about the quality fayre on offer at The Black Horse we decided to give it a visit, from the moment we booked we new it was going to be a winner by the pleasant and helpful manor the phone call was handled , I need write no more as it more than lived up to the recommendation a delicious meal enjoyed by all of our company, very reasonable in fact the price did not reflect the quality, will be back again very soon

Driven past loads of times and now deeply regretting I never stopped. Finally dropped in for a light lunch and surprised of the Italian menu, complemented by a good range of beers and spirits. Great food and beer so will definitely be back with rest of family for dinner shortly. Probably best to ring ahead to book a table if going on a weekend.

This is a fantastic pub restaurant and is one of our favourite places to eat. Anthony is a brilliant host and very attentive. He has great support from his team. The food is outstanding and a nice variety. There is something for everyone.

I visit the Black Horse quite frequently and it is absolutely amazing! All of the staff are brilliant and welcoming and the food is a whole different level. Every time I go I am astonished by the food. Delicious! I would defiantly recommend eating here and I am not afraid to say it is the best restaurant in the area !

Eaten here that many times with family who are also regulars of the Black Horse the staff know my order before i’ve ordered it - this place is always spot on. Owner and waiting staff very welcoming and nothing too much trouble. I love their pepperoni pizzas but they do good selection of italian dishes and always have plenty of specials on - panacotta with salted caramel is always a must and they have Peroni on draft! It’s our go to place for birthdays or get togethers.

Family celebration, great staff, good selection of food and wine, food was a little slow in being served but as we all busy talking it didnt matter that much.

Fancied an Italian so after the reviews thought we would try The Black Horse for ourselves. Went for the 3 course lunch menu for £11.95. Service very good and friendly staff. Food surprisingly pleasant. Felt it was good value for the price and food very nice. Best lemon sponge my wife has ever tasted. Will be bringing the family next time.

Found a great place to finish the day out. The Black Horse couldn’t be more welcoming, Steve and Christine just couldn’t do enough . I went for a calabresi pizza was hit and spicy just the way I like it while everyone else chose from the specials menu. Mrs had the lamb and absolutely loved it. We will be back soon

We’ve had many meals at the Black Horse, all excellent, but never their Sunday Lunch. In truth, I was a bit sceptical if the superb Italian Chefs could produce a “proper” Sunday lunch. I need not have worried - they can! Everyone agreed that this was probably one of the best Sunday Roasts we’ve ever had. Perfectly cooked beef, slightly pink as it should be, crispy roast potatoes, large Yorkshire Pudding and a selection of vegetables to go with it. Couple this with a selection of real ales and a good wine list, and you have a perfect Sunday Lunch. Anthony and his team are always incredibly welcoming and attentive which just makes the whole experience so pleasant. There is a very famous 2 star Michelin restaurant not far from here, but I know where I would prefer to be on a Sunday Lunchtime.

Visited here on Saturday for a late lunch never been before and was very impressed . Mainly Italian menu lots of seafood , pizza and pasta also lovely specials board . We had prawns and fish cakes for starters both delicious and sea bass and lamb chops for mains which were both faultless . Very high quality ingredients , can’t wait to return.
