I'm sad to say that if you don't already know this village pub will be shut now. It has been shut since 13th October 2023 and know one knows when it is next going to be open. Thanking all the lovely staff for their time. Thanks

We visited the pub recently with four dogs and they were very accommodating putting us in a separate room. The food was amazing, some of the most delicious pub food and well priced. The service was ok, not super friendly but still good, the atmosphere was quite lacking which was surprising for a Saturday lunchtime but I’d visit again

Had a gorgeous roast beef lunch at this friendly pub, very tasty, one of the best I’ve had for a long time, loads of perfectly cooked veg and cater for gluten free! My son had the burger and said it was really good too. Nothing was too much trouble, really enjoyed our lunch. Thank you.

Very accommodating - had a lovely private room for our two families, which was perfect. Food was nice, although I was disappointed with the chickpea curry and the dessert was a little strange but everyone else really enjoyed their meals. Staff were very friendly, we had a hiccup with a missing dish but they rushed through a replacement really fast.

We had heard good things about the pub a few years ago and decided to have a meal there for my husbands birthday. The place was cold, we were put into a cold back room. The meal lacked any additional touches as you would expect for the prices paid. I had pea risotto which was tasteless. I may as well have been eating a pile of garden peas and plain rice. No added parmesan or any other flavoursome addition. Other family had steak - plain with no offer of a sauce and frozen chips. Everyone in our party was very disappointed and will not go there again.

Fantastic old pub. We were the only people there at the start of the evening which is a shame for the establishment as they deserve better patronage. Really big portions and excellent quality - whitebait and pate for starters were a meal in themselves and two excellent rib eye steaks for mains which were perfectly cooked. We asked for onion rings as they weren't on the menu and were provided at no extra charge. Friendly guy behind the bar and a really good choice of beers, lagers and ciders. Shame it was our last night but will definitively visit again if in the area. Thanks very much.

We were travelling to the west country and wanted a bite to eat but not at a service station. My partner found the Black Dog so we diverted off the A303. Chilmark is only 5 minutes from the main road and the Black Dog is very easy to find. The postcode takes you straight to it. When we arrived we were given a very friendly welcome, as was out dog. The menu, though not extensive, had something for everyone. The whitebait starter and burger main course were particularly tasty. The beer was well kept and the prices reasonable. If you are looking for a stop just off the A303 near Stone Henge I can thoroughly recommend The Black Dog Inn.

We came to The Black Dog having walked out of the Bell Inn at Wylye in disgust at the attitude of the licensee (asking locals not to stand at the bar as it's 'not very welcoming'). We were made extremely welcome and had a great chat with the man behinid the bar who then told us which of the seats was the most comfortable. Time didn't permit us to linger for anything to eat however it's going to be high on my list for a return visit.

We went here specifically for a midday meal. They were short staffed, but the barman/waiter seemed to think it was a personal challenge. He made every effort to treat every customer as if they were the sole client. The chef was accommodating to dietary requirements and produced really delicious meals for us. I don't mean standard fare for a dairy free option but real choices with delicate flavours, all well presented. The set and setting is relaxing: the prices are about what you would expect for pub food, however the meals are above what you might expect. The service is the jewel in the crown. All the personnel seemed personally invested in the way the place presented itself.

Having never been here before we relied on other reviews when we took the chance and booked it. Despite being a little short staffed on Sunday the lady on the bar (who was also rushing round taking food orders and serving food) was friendly and welcoming. In fact, all the staff we saw were friendly and treated us like regulars even though it was our first visit. The food arrived in a timely manner and was really tasty. There were four of us eating and we had 3 different dishes. They all arrived together and were all hot and looked freshly cooked. We'd definitely recommend and if we are ever back in that area would not hesitate in going back (just a shame it's not closer to home or we'd be there very often). The only thing which could have been improved was possibly the garden which is located across the car park, and was a little 'unloved' and not necessarily the best we've seen, but that's being ultra critical.

After 25 years of driving past the sign on the A303 I decided to take a diversion for a fluid-adjustment break. James, new landlord, knows his beers, knows his food, good cafetiere of coffee and has a snug pub/beer house rather than a restaurant masquerading as a pub. Starbucks doesn't need your money, local business does.

This pub will not last long. We went there for dinner on a monday night in August . They had a limited menu and when we ordered two curries, we was told there was only one left, so we ordered one curry and three fish and chips. The curry was a boil in a bag curry and not very nice and the fish and chips was not fresh. We did ask about the chef bla bla bla and was told the chef doesn't work Monday. Well don't open the restaurant monday, its not rocket science. The pub was dull and had absolutely zero atmosphere. We decided to sit out side and the garden furniture was old and needed desperate repair. Bearing in mind the pub was in lock down they could have at least used the time to fix the outside furniture. I would not recommend and will not go back. If the management of a pub can not make an effort to keep customers then they don't deserve to be succesful.

For years I have been wanting to visit 'The black dog' , Chilmark. My mother in law lives in Dorset and we passed the sign for it on the 303 hundreds of times. Finally as we have moved into the area we decided to go. Sunday 12.00. Old gentleman waiting outside for the pub to open and was let in but when we went round to the front we noticed all the curtains were pulled, doors both back and front locked , tables and chairs just anywhere in the front so we assumed not open. Decided to telephone but no one answered. Wouldn't have minded if they were late getting up or something. We would have waited. After all the good reviews Gutted!! ,

Great Wedding Party venue - thank you to all at the Angel. Great size room for our party of 70, lovely big round tables for guests, alcove with 3 tressle tables for the food an area at the other end of the room for DJ. The beams are all lit with fairy lights, which makes for a lovely atmosphere. The tables were decorated lovely, vases candles etc, and they let us use their blackboard and easel to write our own welcome message. Drinks packages are well worth doing and the bar is only down stairs for additional drinks. Can’t thank you enough for a great room to host our party. Sent from my iPhone

Would give Le Cafe Journal zero stars if I could! Proprietor was extremely rude and unwelcoming. As someone who works in hospitality I was amazed at her attitude considering she was the proprietor! I put it down to she was having a bad day but after reading other reviews it seems that she is just extremely rude!! I would not revisit or recommend to anyone! I love to support local businesses, however I would recommend going to the Wetherspoons over this place!
