We were recommended to go to The Black Boy for a meal and were very pleased that we did. There was plenty of choice on the menu for adults and our five year old grandson really enjoyed his meal. The service was very good and the food arrived quickly and was hot. I will certainly visit this pub again when we are next in the area. Apparently it gets very busy, so i advise that you book so as not to be disappointed.

My first visit to this lovely pub and I was eager to try the fish and chips after hearing all about them from my parents who dined here fairly recently with some friends. The interior is lovely and welcoming and there is a cosy dining room tucked away from the bar area. Everywhere is spotlessly clean including the toilets. The two staff members who served us were friendly and efficient and checked back to see if we were happy with our food or wanted more drinks. I’d had my heart set on the fish and chips but there were lots of dishes on the menu that were very tempting and also a specials board. However the fish and chips won out and after not too long await I was delighted to see my chosen meal being set before me. This is how fish and chips should be - the fish was fresh, moist and flaky, batter was crispy and not greasy, the chips were absolutely fantastic and of course you simply cannot beat Lockwoods mushy peas especially when they come in a big dish like you get here. I have to say this was one of the best if not THE best pub fish and chips I’ve had. Absolutely delicious and nice that they have two sizes for those who aren’t as hungry (or greedy). Two of us had the fish and the other choice was the lasagne which was also delicious by all accounts and served with a nice salad and garlic bread. Much too full for a dessert. So glad to have eaten here and of course the problem is what to have next time - other diners whilst we were here had pie, burger and roast dinners all of which looked fantastic. Totally recommend this pub for a fantastic meal. Loved everything about the visit!

We have been twice now after finding this lovely gem of a place. The first thing we like is that they don't allow dogs in the main restaurant and only have them in the bar area. I am allergic to dogs so it's really hard nowadays for me to find an eating place that doesn't allow them in. I love dogs but don't want to eat my food near them from a hygiene point of view and also my allergy doesn't help. So this place is ideal for me and I wish other places would consider customers who can't have dogs near them. The food is exceptional especially their roast dinners which are such good value for money and quality food. The staff are lovely and make you feel welcome and always have a smile on their faces and nothing is too much trouble. We will definitely be back!

A good lunch for three people. The food was of high quality, hot and as described. The staff were pleasant, attentive and personable. The fish was overcooked but still edible. Portion size good and the environment was warm and welcoming. I would recommend this place for a meal, snack or just a drink. Booking essential.

I came in with my husband and daughter for lunch. When we ordered I told the lady who took our order that I am allergic to peppers. When my baguette came the salad had peppers in it which could have caused a severe allergic reaction and I called the same lady over to ask for another plate so I could remove the salad. As she took the plate away she said ‘oh yeah my fault’. Not only did I not get an apology but I don’t think she realised the severity of the situation and what could have happened. I would hate for someone else to suffer a serious medical episode because of staff’s failure to recognise the seriousness of food allergies.

We visited here with our dogs for Sunday lunch. They couldn’t have been more accommodating. They moved us to a different table, when the previous diners had left, so that we had more room for our dogs. We had the Sunday roast to eat which was delicious and I particularly liked you had an option of having a two choices of portion size. It is a welcoming pub with a very friendly atmosphere and lovely helpful staff. We will definitely visit again. The icing on the cake was also meeting the owners adorable puppy. We sat in the bar but if you are not dog lovers there is a very nice restaurant area.

We chose to eat at the black boy on Friday evening after looking at menus locally and deciding it was the best varied menu. It didn’t disappoint, whilst it took a little while to get drinks, it was evident all night the staff were rushed off their feet! It was lovely to see a team of young staff trying their best. The food was great - particularly the chips and choc brownie! And the drinks menu was extensive and varied. The outdoor area is really clean and comfy, blankets are available for a £2 donation towards Laurens legacy charity which is a lovely touch! I would happily return, next time for Saturday pizza night!

After living in Belper for 13 years, finally got around to trying the Black Boy for the first time and was very impressed. Visited on a Sunday with a group of three other people and we all had the roast dinner. There was a good choice - beef, pork, lamb and turkey and a choice of small (£8.50) or large (£10.50). There didn’t seem to be that much difference between small and large. Nice homemade Yorkshire puddings and roasties and good selection of veg - carrots, broccoli and cauliflower. Didn’t realise that cauliflower cheese was available as a side dish or might have ordered that. They also do a wide range of other options (even on a Sunday) and the food coming out all looked delicious (especially the fish and chips!). A great first visit and we will definitely be back

We visited the black boy one Sunday for Sunday lunch with family. We were shown to our table as soon as we arrived. We all had a roast dinner (4 of us) you get your chosen meat, mashed potato, Yorkshire pudding and 1 roast potato on your plate, then a bowl of veg is brought out. We had 2 bowls between 4 of us, definitely not enough veg to serve 4. What we got was nice, just not worth the price you pay in my opinion. The chocolate brownie was very nice. A great touch of the temperature scanner on the door before you even enter the building.

We were greeted by a temperature gun, which was reassuring, and then more warmly inside by the friendly bar maid. We were then shown to our seats in the downstairs eating area at the far end of the room form the only other couples in there; strangely the next couple shown in were seated right next to us and not in the centre of the room between us and the other already seated couple!Anyway, the menu looked enticing, and we all chose well, the food when it came was well cooked, really delicious and plentiful, the beer available is a good selection of real ales, ciders and lagers, well kept and decently priced, and the staff were lovely. The pub and restaurant areas are very comfortable, welcoming and homely, we've not been into the outside patio since it's been refurbed, that's a treat for another day!

Called in on the off chance at 3pm today with a family of 5 on our 20th wedding anniversary. For those worried about COVID-19, a temperature sensor on the door checks whether you allowed in - just remember to remove glasses as this can confuse the machine. Given the 50% off government deal was on they still managed to seat us inside as was far too hot outside at 33 degrees! Despite clearly being very busy, the food was very good and the service friendly and efficient. I can well recommend this family run establishment for good home cooked pub food. My daughter would make a meal from the brie wedges alone. Thank you and wish you well for what has undoubtedly been a difficult period for this industry! For main course we all had Sunday lunch, two pork, two beef and a lamb. Two different sizes are available, two had small and three had large. All were superb, hot and came with plenty of choice. The Yorkshire puddings were definitely home made, crisp on the outside and soft in the middle. Vegetables were swapped with no hassle if you don’t particularly like one of them. Firstly let me say this is a review of the pub and not the restaurant as we didn't eat. As first times to this pub we entered to find a pleasant and clean environment . We ordered a white wine and Lancaster Bomber beer and found it priced similarly to other local pubs. The wine was fine but the ale was unduly cloudy and felt it could have been kept better. However we stayed for a second drink but on this occasion I ordered an Old Rosie cider, it arrived crystal clear! As I know this is a cloudy cider I queried it to be rather forcibly told that it had cleared! When I tasted it it was a Mango Cider! I returned it to the bar and the bar maid neither apologised or made any attempt to rectify in a timely manner. She turned and poured another totally clear pint of Rosie. Whilst this at least tasted more like it it was again of very poor quality. It's a shame, we wanted to find a pub within walking distance but this will jot be the one. Poor staff, poor landlady and very poor beer.

A family favourite at lunchtimes. Typical but high quality pub food menu without any pretensions. Well deserved good reputation for fish and chips. Portion sizes just right. Good beer options too. Friendly and efficient service by staff. Will visit again soon, no doubt...

I have visited this pub many times for snacks and lunches with friends. On every visit we have had a very warm welcome from the staff, and excellent food from the kitchen. The menu gives a wide choice of English food, excellent beers and other drinks. My friends and I meet here often for lunch and a natter.

Visit here for lunch every few weeks as part of a large group. Good local Pub, with great choice of beers and decent food at reasonable prices. The staff are friendly and cope well with multiple simultaneous orders. Always an enjoyable visit.

I hadn’t been here for a long time. Due to everyone else being busy, and my wife having to travel out of the county, I found myself with a couple of hours to spare after church (Loscoe Baptist), before the World Cup final.

Eight family members visited The Black Boy for meals. The staff were very friendly attending to us politely and in a helpful way. Our drinks order was initially taken and these arrived without any undue delay. Within our party three members chose the same meals which meant we would get a very good idea of the standard of food as the remaining five in the party made different choices.

We had been recommended this place by others but this was our first visit. We were not disappointed. The home-made roast lunches were superb - both in quantity and quality - and the service very efficient and friendly. The beer wasn't bad either and the whole thing was very good value for money. We will definitely be going again.

The service was fine and my friend and I were allocated a choice of 2 tables when we arrived. My gripe was the lasagne, if they cannot make a better lasagne they would be better taking it off the menu. It was the worst lasagne I have ever had. It was very like a pot full of folded lasagne sheet with a few bits of minced meat now and again. The waitress said she would tell the chef but we had no feedback from him/her and were asked to pay the full amount of the bill. Very disappointed.

Myself and my partner found ourselves at a loose end over the weekend so decided on a drive out into some country side for lunch. Took a look on TripAdvisor and spotted the black boy.

Had lunch here today, now I know everything is cooked from fresh & it wasn`t that busy, but a 40 minute wait for our main meal ? Afterwards, "Would we like a sweet ? " Yes & after waiting 15 minutes for the menu board never to arrive, we left. Had a sweet & coffee at Tansley garden centre. To be fair, the food was ok & the prices are sensible though. Don`t be dissuaded by going to this place, this was just our experience on this day

The food quality and variety are excellent, the service is efficient and friendly and the prices are very reasonable. They offer two sizes of roast dinner and having the smaller one leaves room to enjoy one of their delicious starters and desserts. They stock a wonderful selection of real ales and ciders as well as a good range of wines and spirits. They are deservedly popular with locals and get booked up for Sunday lunch well in advance.

We visited The Black Boy on Bank Holiday Monday, I found the food very ordinary, the eating area was stifling with no windows apart from two skylights which were closed, on a very hot day, I found it very uncomfortable, but the most alarming thing was when our meals were served, one of the meals had the pot of mint sauce on the plate amongst the food, it was then removed and placed on the table dripping in gravy, whist being removed the waitress's fingers went into the vegetables! to be honest that was enough for me.

On a rare sunny Bank Holiday Monday we visited the Black Boy Inn for a quick bite to eat. Although there is a sit down restaurant we opted instead for the Bar Menu so that we could enjoy the sunshine outside.

We visited here when we were staying at a nearby caravan site. The staff were friendly and helpful. The food was delicious. We all had the Sunday Roast dinner which was amazing value and very tasty. Be advised don’t order the large portion unless you have a massive appetite. I had the small portion and it was more than enough for me. I also had the hot cherries and meringue dessert which was also very good. We would definitely visit again if in the area.

Had the smoked salmon and prawn terrine to start, followed by traditional roast with all the trimmings and even managed to squeeze in dessert. Chose the small roast portion which was more than enough. Food was lovely, friendly service in a nice and light restaurant with very comfortable seating.

We had made a booking post Christmas as we used to frequent the Black Boy when we worked for Oxford Brookes in Headington and were always satisfied with the experience, Now we are reitired we nrmaly meet up monthly and usually with little notice and have frquently been disappointed that it is fully booked. However I had a dental appointment so had good notice and managed to get a lunchtime booking. Unfortunately the dental appointment overran, and was more painful than anticipated, so I could only have the excellent soup, and wine(so not all bad!) but my friend had a main course which he was very pleased with, and a lush dessert. The service was speedy, attentive and sympathetic! This visit confirmed our previous opinion that the Black Boy is a very plesant and relaxing place to eat, the food and wine are alway very good and it has an excellent ambiance; highly recommended
