Food is good and service is excellent. Good value for money and everyone is friendly. Good choice for vegetarians. Interesting areas to sit in both inside and out.

My wife had a medium gourmet steak, I had a American double cheeseburger, So how do I start, the 8oz gourmet steak was burnt crisp, the peppercorn sauce was minuscule, and there were only 3 very small onion rings. The cheese burger was smaller than a happy meal, and came with 11 chips. Staff were sitting at the table next to ours, shouting and swearing, the person who brought the food to us was arrogant, and his attitude stank, after bringing us the wrong meals twice. It is without a doubt the worst meal I have ever bought, I will NOT be returning, and will advise everyone I know to steer well clear, and to go to McDonald’s instead.

Nice to have a spoons here. U go every so often and always do the app when ordering and to be fair the service is always spot on. Meals can be hit and miss but not too bad for the price I guess.

Me and my husband came in for breakfast, Ordered 2 large breakfast came out within 5 minutes of ordering, The down side to our visit was Flood were dirty food everywhere,some tables were not cleaned,not an ideal time for someone to painting while there is babies in the building

Met up with friends early evening on Friday, Bombay Sapphire was questionable at times, other times spot on?? We felt like we were in an after school club, lots of young children running around treating it like a playground… frequent many Wetherspoons in different locations, at around this same time of day , I have never experienced this before here..a real turn off! We shall go across the road to Social 23 next time!

Why is it that evertime I ask for Jacket potato and rosted vegetables you never have it?? ABERYSTWYTH HAVE Oswestry have it I'm so disappointed 😞

Called in on Fri 15/9/23 for a quick lunch, and I will say one of the best weatherspoons mixed grill ive ever had. Good, quick service. nice staff and cheap prices. What’s not to like. Fantastic.

Here now for a spot of lunch. I don't mind waiting 40 minutes at all for food if the quality is good, but this was appaling. How can you not get a basic burger and chips right.

Great to see a busy pub and cheap prices but when you consider portion size, I would have been better going over the road to the chippy. The size of this steak and kidney pudding is tiny (no I dont have a massive finger :-)), a token attempt at a good for nothing mash potato, extremely sad looking dehydrated peas and gravy from last Christmas's special. My wife went for the steak which clearly stated 1 mushroom which well was I guess a mushroom or had been at some time in its sad little life plus the 3 onion rings were forgotten so had to remind them.. When you only have 20 things (including chips) on a plate, I'm sure that you could ensure that you can remember 3 cold, tasteless and uninteresting onion rings too. Very disappointed -but on a positive note though, a good long walk to the toilets to walk off my food :-) The staff that served behind the bar and delivering the the table were perfectly lovely though.

Just needs a good clean, ive told them and shown them before as cleaners are missing to clean things. Its grubby everyday. Sack the cleaners or show them what needs doing.

For a few years the Black Boy was a reliable Wetherspoons pub for food and service. Nothing amazing but good, basic food and drink. Fast forward to 2022 and whoever was cooking the food and more importantly whoever was responsible for the reliable standards have obviously had gone elsewhere. After 3 visits where the food was atrocious i felt it was time to complain. The assistant "manageress" seemed to be genuine and apologised for the state of the shoe leather I had just been offered as a medium rare steak. She gave us a £20 voucher. But it turned out that she had been lying and the voucher was just blank. So we went back and complained. She apologised again ( this time I saw through her false smile ) and gave us another voucher. This second voucher was also not valid so she had obviously lied again. So to conclude ... I know its "only" a Wetherspoons but this one WAS a good, reliable one. Something has gone wrong and a small, blondish, dumpy manageress who finds it so easy to lie and falsely apologise has made it a place to avoid. Needs a visit from head office to get the standards back and sack incapable staff.

Can't quite believe how bad the service was, tried to get served 3 times, none at the bar x 2 just about to serve me and someone who must work the asked for a key so if she went. Gave a dirty plate on our table to the waitress? She looked at me like I was an inconvenience and put it on the next table, then walked down the length of the room into the kitchen 🤔🤔🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️

3 small plates for 13.50 x2 for 2 people is moooooooore than enough. cant complain really with the food, it was nice and the plates are not small haha a

Main meals were nice although not much choice as lots out of stock. Kids ice cream didn't come with sauce and chocolate chips as menu stated and I had chocolate fudge cake with custard which came looking like someone threw it back up on my plate, was also partially soggy and barely warm. Very disappointed.

Just had another lovely breakfast at The Black Boy, Newtown. Good food, good coffee with free refills. Love going there, you always know the food will be good, and the staff are really nice and welcoming. Cosy place to go. Love it. See you again soon.

What a very cold place. Air con was on full blast. People eating their food in their coats. Why put air con on in the middle of winter

Visited for breakfast with a friend, ordered online and had a great meal. A few hours later couldnt find my purse and rang the blac boy back panicked. A polite and friendly staff member awnserd the phone and quickly reassured me that they had found my purse. On collection busy staff were again polite and friendly returning my purse. I'm really grateful to the team.

Like all Wetherspoon restaurants you get good value for your money.We had the Fish and chips and it was cooked well.

Very often at this pub, sadly, the tables have not been cleared or washed off in a hurry and the carpets are in need of a good shampooing. Nevertheless, it's a 'formula' pub. No music, straightforward food, order and pay at the counter, etc. The Black Boy is one of the many Wetherspoons chain pubs, cheap food served relatively fast. I've tried almost everything on the menu by now, and the first time I had the lamb shank it was amazing, succulent and fell off the bone, but I have ordered it a few times since then and it was always dry and overcooked and the gravy was so gloopy. boo! Their mashed potatoes leave a lot to be desired...very rubbery and cakey, I suspect it's partial powdered spuds or else just been on the heat way too long. The brunch/breakfast meals are cheap and cheerful. The poached egg with salmon is YUMMY, full english breakfast is a good deal. The servers don't seem to last a long time as it's always different young people not seeming to realize that part of a waiters job is to keep tables clean and remove dirty plates and glasses when they're done, that's my only beef, I like a clean table to sit at, doesn't everyone?The last time I brought a friend there it was around 4 o'clock and I ordered fish and chips which was okay, however his scampi was kind of over-cooked and too crispy. Never mind.Free wifi, decent drinks and fair prices, that's fair enough.

Was looking forward to ‘Sunday brunch’ as advertised on the menu. Ordered the lamb shank which, according to the menu, they served up until 11pm. This was 4pm. It arrived on a bed of Chips in gravy not the mash and with no roast veg that it was meant to come with. When I queried it the waiter said ‘you were told at the till that we had run out of mash’. I was told no such thing and running out at 4pm- ridiculous! Was asked if I wanted something else but I was so hungry I declined. Wish I had as the shank was disgusting. Dry and tasteless. Place was dirty with the carpet covered in debris. It had clearly not been hoovered in a while. Only consolation was it was cheap. You get what you pay for. Never again.

Ok place for a middle of road meal, burgers, pizzas, all day breakfasts etc ..... Food is cheap but plenty full. Place order at bar and food arrives quickly. Place could do with a clean. Very busy place

The service was good, friendly staff and a lovely reasonably priced meal. But the cleanliness of the place was disgusting. Filthy stairway, crumbs and dust everywhere. This was weeks of filth not just days.

Went for a meal, was fish night, got a huge fish, chips, peas and a soft drink for £6.75 I think it was an extra 95p for curry sauce and it was delicious, nice staff, clean environment

Food quite nice. Place filthy. Lunchtime meal. Carpets not seen a sweeper for days. Radiators filthy. Dust everywhere. Chairs and stool stored underneath the stairs. Tables not clean etc etc etc.

Tables and floor were dirty, cutlery needed cleaning as it was dirty. Bored and uninterested staff serving uninspired boring pub grub. Cheap but no longer terribly cheerful to be honest!

I wasn't sure what to expect from a 'quick food joint' but was so impressed. The food was better than the average I had expected and the free coffee was the best idea my hubbie had come across in a long time...

Awful, the place is filthy and and badly maintained which is a shame as some of the furnishings are lovely, the shift leader who served us was unhelpful and frankly rude. The tables hadn’t been cleared from previous customers so there were no clean tables to sit at and when they were the cleared waiter took a dirty damp cloth out of his pocket to wipe the table down! Really disappointed with the whole experience. If you want a dirty and cheap restaurant to eat in then this is your place.

As with most Weatherspoons you know the food is going to cheap and good quality. The place itself is really dark in areas and everywhere needs a really good clean, there is old food on the walls, pictures, down the seats and the carpet is sticky... if it was clean it would be much nicer to be in.

Travelling from Carmarthen to Manchester requires at least one stop and that's what it turned out to be for us. The Broad Street in Newtown is as described and herringbone parking made the most of the wide road. The Black Boy is an old building and has been very well brought up to date and suitable for the demands of a Wetherspoons.Whilst many people were already seated, drinking and eating it was relatively easy to find a table for two. A quick look at the menu confirmed we were still in Wales as it included a section for meals associated and cooked in Wales. We chose Welsh Fagggots and a Pizza Margareta, we did not have to wait long for them to be delivered, hot and on warm plates. The Pizza was to the usual standards and the Faggots were very good being served with Mushy Peas and chips, mash could be ordered if wished. No complaints for the meals and the service.The Black Boy made a pleasant change from many big city center @Spoons which have tended to be taken over by heavy drinkers. It should be considered as a convenient stop if driving across Wales

Called here on Sunday late afternoon as both kids were starving after a 3 hour drive. My first impression was...........it’s dark, lots of dirty tables which were desperate to be cleaned, lots of food on the floor, we walked around the whole place looking for a clean table which sat 4 of us, we eventually did but had to ask for the table to be wiped down. Food was ordered quickly and it arrived very quickly, impressed!! Food was really nice too, lasagne a veggie lasagne and kids meals were pizza and ham egg and chips. Friendly staff and lovely clean toilets even though they are upstairs. The only downside I’d say was they needed more staff on a Sunday. Yes I’d go again.

In the High or main street of Newtown, they like to promote their Welsh identity with Welsh recipes not available across the border. Food was good and plenty of it. The value was excellent and the beer was well kept and served.

twice in the last few days, we have walked in and out again. tables not cleared, lots of food debris on the floor. i realise it is the school holidays, but i would be ashamed if my kids have left the mess that some do. not fair on staff to clear up or customers trying to find a table

Good and fast service really, didn’t expect it. Stopped for a quick lunch 3 of us, had Gammon steak with eggs, Sirloin for me and pizza for my boy. Fast service, the food was very good and I would recommend this place. Thanks

when entering this establishment do not expect 4-star food /service it is basically fast food .but saying that some dishes are lovely the Terriaki Noodles, Welsh Cottage Pie and curries worth a try.

Having been to The Black Boy a couple of times and not finding it that good we nonetheless decided to try once more. How stupid of us! The place was dirty with the sauce holders rusty and seats saggy, never mind salt all over the table. Six of us ordered and my husband took his chicken burger and chips back to the counter for a refund as the food was hard and inedible. Obviously over cooked or left to heat up too long. My veggie burger was also very over done and the bun so hard I didn't eat it.Our guests did eat their food but I think more out of politeness than anything else.Suffice to say this was our last visit to this establishment. The staff do not care and did not even apologise for my Husbands bad meal. With my holiday business in the town plus curatorship of a local Museum I will not be recommending the Black Boy. What a shame such a lovely historic Inn is run by people who don't care about their property, food or patrons and when were the shuttle lights last dusted?

Prices at weatherspoons are always amazing, however the Black boy in Newtown is a grade II listed building from the 17th century. I had the Welsh Celtic pride beef cottage pie only 537 calories. Sorry no photo since I ate it too fast!

We wanted something substantial...not chips & opted for Lambshank, veg & mash. We’ve never seen anything like it - the shank was almost black from being kept warm...hard & crusty on the outside which meant is was difficult to get the meat off the bone & when you did, that was dry! The veg were a few carrots in what gravy there was with mash that also had a “skin” on it. Our Wetherspoons at home serve much better quality meals & although we realise their meals are basic, ours was appalling. Won’t be returning!!

Had a girls' night here recently, with various meals. I chose the 5 bean chilli, which has been changed up with Mexican rice (YUM!) and whole tortilla chips rather than crumbs. Much better. There are a few vegan choices on the menu now, and yet more vegetarian ones, along with advice on which meals are healthier and calorie counts, so you have a more informed choice. Friends all had meat choices and reported them all good. Service was fast and friendly, meals were super-quick to appear as we arrived before the dinner rush. The only thing that wasn't as good was cleanliness. The table was empty on arrival but wasn't very clean. However, the kitchen has a very good hygiene rating so I feel safer eating there.

Good food, reasonable prices nice atmosphere. Good choice of food for all ages. Things for kids to do while waiting for their food.

We have just moved to the area,so we tried here.We been to many Wetherspoons and the food is always ok,and it was here.Maybe I am old school,but too many screaming kids for me.Maybe a separate area for these customers.They can and do spoil your meal.Also,you need more staff,tablesfloor,left messy for ages.The staff are very good but you need more.The place is big,very busy,you could at least employ somebody to collect glasses,clear tables,etc.But,we may go again.As stated,the staff are very good,hence 5/5,but someone's going to have an accident,as they constantly on the go with all the orders,clearing up,etc,

Havent been in a while but there isnt much choice on a Sunday evening so popped in for a meal. Found the table and floor dirty, dirty knife left on our table and menus scattered across it. Other tables next to ours dirty and the usual bored and disinterested staff. Food was OK, nothing special but adequate for the price I guess.This place is a shadow of its former self and before it was taken over by Wetherspoons. Could be a gold mine and sad to see it as it is...

Very well laid out traditional style Wetherspoons. Exceptionally clean and toilets very nice. Nice place to sit and relax and enjoy your drink in.

Lovely food as always. Never had a bad meal but oh so need extra staff. The tables are always left full of dirty dishes, food on floor from previous family with kids, that didn't seem bothered there was mess every where when they left. Poor staff are run off their feet and there all so lovely. Come on guys put on some extra staff it would help the existing staff a great deal and customers too.

Had a girls' night out with food, which arrived really quickly and was universally applauded. The Black Boy is usually busy at mealtimes, apparently it's the busiest Wetherspoons kitchen in Wales, but often there are only 2 or 3 staff for the dinner/ evening shift, so there can be a longer wait if you go at peak times. There are lots of veggie/ vegan options on the menu now, it's worth asking if veggie alternatives are available when you order. Check the specials, too, it's often cheaper and with a free drink.

I find the food here good if they are nt rushed off feet and its not a special day if it is then the quility of the food goes down hill

What had been a very long day for us after having seen my Mother in hospital in Stoke On Trent, culminated in an excellent time well spent at The BlackBoy in Newtown,(Dropping Dad back home) before heading off home back to Luton. As always the Staff are always pleasant and happy to please, All our meals were excellently presented and our drinks at the right temperature, Yes we could have stopped off anywhere between Stoke & Newtown, but i knew that if we hung on that bit longer the BlackBoy would could come up with the goods and it did in brilliant style !! again it still beats me how they can do such a good menu for the price, but well done and we will be back again when next in Newtown in April.

We came to The Black Boy a couple of times while on holiday at Caersws. The staff were very welcoming and helpful. The furniture does look a little tired, but obviously being a busy pub it’s bound to be. There’s a covered outdoor seating area at the back of the pub, unfortunately this isn’t heated, but was very clean and tidy.Our meals were great, one of us had a beef burger which was cooked beautifully, the other two of us had different types of chicken burgers, they were also cooked perfectly, very moist tasty chicken. The chips and real onion rings that came with our meals were lovely too. Great prices and great hot tasty food. There’s a disabled toilet, which could perhaps do with a little check more often as it becomes a bit untidy as the night goes on. Or maybe the radar door should be kept locked then only being accessible by the people who actually need a ground floor loo. This is a regular problem with the disabled toilets in Wetherspoon pubs, as the main toilets are usually upstairs, so some people become lazy and just use the disabled one, tut tut, please keep the door locked guys.

Food, Coffee, and Craft Beers excellent value with a great ambience. Staff helpful and friendly. Great mixture of table format and size means that all size parties are catered for.Clean and modern rest rooms.

Went here because the place we wanted to go to was unexpectedly closed. Very cheap, but not great quality food. The cleanliness of the tables also left a bit to be desired. Unlikely to return

A real shortage of family places to eat in the town on a Sunday evening so we often end up here. Floors dirty, tables dirty, toilets looked like they hadn't been cleaned in weeks. Food mediocre as always served by staff who really look.loke they dont want to be there. This is NOT the black boy of old that's for sure!!

Took our Computer up there to Newtown to be cleaned and updated by( Cambrian Computers) and then to be collected hence two visits. First visit we had the English Breakfast and 1 x the Eggs Benedict which were just Great. The staff were first class and the food came out on piping hot plates. 2 x refillable drinks and all for well under £9.00.Fantastic value for money. The other time we just had the Toast and preserves and coffee for the two of us - also good value £4.70 for both. That also was good with a quality marmalade and Jam in individual glass jars .

Unfortunately all the Wetherspoons are just the same. No big complaints as its cheap , cheerful and pretty quick but it would be nice if they could have something local and different on their menus. On the bright side you can always rely on Wetherspoons for cheap beer and ordinary but adequate food.

Dirty table, dirty floor, uninterested staff, boring uninspired food. Fastish service but food is just dumped onto plate with no thought to presentation. They ALWAYS forget lemon she my wife orders scampi, how difficult is it to get that right?

Visited here after a walk round the town. Lovely exterior and nice proper pub feel inside. Friendly staff and nice busy atmosphere. Loved the local photos on display. So nice we visited twice on the same day lol.

Visited The Black Boy today for lunch, upon arrival i was worried how busy they were as I had only put an hour ticket on the car, but had no need to be concerned as from order (from the table app) to table was literally 13 mins, the food was hot well presented and the usual standard you would expect from a whetherspoons chain, very satisfied, would come again if in this direction

We came here for a meal and thought we would try it now that it is wetherspoons and saw that they do special welsh menus and thought as I like faggot that I would order that but unfortunately they had run out of these so ended up having pie and mash. really not great meal at all.

This is good honest fayre. I often use this place for breakfast meetings with colleagues.Whilst, in the evenings its great to be able to say to the lady of the house " don't bother cooking dinner tonight lets eat out" Our favourite is steak night where we can have two delicious steak meals and a drink and comfortably see change out of £20.00. All the food is served is generous in portions, well cooked and service is usually pretty quick. However, it can be noisy as a venue , but who cares?

Cheap and cheerful. Plenty of seating and every time I have been there has been nicely full without being overcrowded.

Been here for last 2 mornings can’t fault the breakfast cooked well eggs a little to well but for £4.65 with unlimited hot drinks I ain’t complaining

We only discovered this pub/restaurant recently and were very impressed with the quality of food, prices and very efficient and friendly staff. We would recommend anybody living around in mid Wales or passing through to visit this establishment. You will not be disappointed.

Lovely Wetherspoons, cheap but delicious food with lots of choice and lots of drinks as well although sadly I was driving after so couldn’t have a drink, it would be great for a night out. Lots of healthier meals too if you’re watching your figure or losing weight. Food arrived piping within 5 minutes of completing our order!

This place needs a serious clean! Floors are dirty, tables always dirty, walls are dusty and toilets are disgusting.

I Visit the black boy alot with family and friends. Always receive great service, food is always spot on, if ever there is a problem with my order it is always rectified quickly and hassle free. Staff always seem happy to help :)

Rather shabby furniture, broken fixtures and fittings not clean at all, some staff not cleaning up just leaving tables dirty and food on floor. This place only opened as Wetherspoons within last few years

We ate at the Black Boy on a Friday evening just after 5pm.

We often eat at Wetherspoons pubs as we find the food tasty and very good value. The food we had at the Black Boy tasted nice but it was very difficult to enjoy it. When I unwrapped my cutlery there was a large solid chunk of a previous diner's meal stuck on the knife. It looked like vomit but was probably pizza. It was extremely off-putting! When I reported it I received an apology and replacement cutlery. I nearly abandoned the meal, and with hindsight should have. All I could think of was the fact that if they could miss what was stuck to the knife when they were wrapping the cutlery what could be stuck to my plate beneath my burger? I felt nauseous for the rest of the day and still feel off when I think of it now. In addition, the table was filthy and had the appearance of not having been wiped for some time. The menu fell of our table behind the adjacent radiator but when my wife bent to pick it up the floor was so dirty she couldn't bring herself to touch it. The building is really nice and full of character. Unfortunately we will never be returning. Such a shame.

My boyfriend and I have eaten here many times and each time have had excellent service, great tasty food and fab value for money.

My review is based solely on the drinks, as we were stopping on the way to a restaurant for a friends leaving do. (Although I’ve heard people say the food is nice, I’m yet to try but plan too soon).

We called here as we have been here before ,today it was Easter Sunday and the place was busy but we found a table for the four of us ,a very nice young male server came and quickly cleared and wiped the table for us he was very polite ,my partner and i had a look at the menus and my partner went to the bar to order there were a lot of people at the bar but he was served pretty quickly and we didn't have to wait too long for our food and was brought to the table by a very nice young female sever who advised us that our plates were very hot and she said "enjoy your meals" she smiled and looked to be enjoying her job ,i ordered the buttermilk chicken burger which came with chips it was really nice the chicken burger was moist and tasty and the coating was lovely too not over cooked and with a very nice soft bun, chips were lovely too ,my partner ordered the gammon and eggs which he also said was really delicious 2 large slices of gammon bacon ,mushroom ,2 fried eggs,peas,chips all cooked absolutely perfectly and was nicely presented on the plate ,we really enjoyed this visit to the Black boy and will definitely call again when we are next in Newtown there seemed to be plenty of staff and food was coming out very quickly

5 stars because it knows what it's trying to do and does it well, not because it's the best food you'll ever have in your life. We fed a family of 5 with drinks for just over £30 - staff were friendly and efficient, food was hot, good portions and came quickly with something on the menu for everyone.

Choice of food and drink ideal for both meat eating and vegetarian diners. Prices and variety as any other weatherspoons establishment. Called on a Thursday afternoon (4.30pm). Plenty of tables available. Childrens menu available. Food ordered at bar and arrived at table as ordered. All staff encountered front of house very helpful and courteous.

Had an enjoyable lunch. Quite busy but found a table. Usual JD food, service was very good and staff very polite. Food was hot and good portions plus we thought very good value for money. Free refills on the coffee went down rather well.

On our recent visit to the area as 3 couples having good reviews we decided to stop for lunch to find a table and wait half an hour for someone to clean the table after asking 3 times and getting rude attitude from a male member of staff . The food arrived barely warm and lacked any taste . A very dissapointing visit .

Had an evening meal here with my wife and daughter and her partner recently. I asked the classic burger which arrived burnt to a crisp on both sides and pink on the inside. I left the burger. The waiter collected our plates and did not notice my plate was still 3/4 full , he just picked the plates up and walked away. Unlikely I will eat here again, its a shame as I have had a few meals there since wetherspoons took over and they have been great but the standard seems to be dropping.

We called in for a quick lunch - 6 people including 2 children. Meals were served quickly and the price was very reasonable. Food was fine for the price

Visited today at lunchtime. Table for two. Ordered food, arrived 45 minutes at least later. I returned mine, the pie was black with burnt bits falling off! Returned it to the counter. The young lady agreed it should not have been served. Waited at least another 40 minutes. By which time my companion had eaten and was ready to leave long before my food arrived. I attempted to speak to one of the two waiters,an older man. Apart from calling me darling several times he did not apologise! I noticed the tables were very sticky, piles of dishes uncollected.Floors dirty with food. As far as I could see they only had two people waiting on. So Wetherspoons get your staff trained please! There’s a way to deal with customers, at least an apology or explanation should have been given. I am not sure who was in charge but what a shambles!

We needed a quick Sunday lunch that wasn't about a leisurely roast. The Black Boy looked lovely from the outside but was just like any other Wetherspoon's inside. Shame, I bet it used to be lovely. However, it did what it said on the tin and we had a cheap, quick, ok lunch.

We always a great time for a social with friends or a nice family meal. The staff are great and the food is very reasonably priced and tasty. Plenty of variety of food and drinks. The only down side is that there is no music to create a more chilled atmosphere. Great for all ages.

Obviously I've rated it 5 stars, not 5 stars in the sense that it's the perfect restaurant or a high end dining experience, but 5 stars for being the perfect place for a cheap tasty meal that will fill you up and leave you satisfied.

I must admit to quite liking Weatherspoons pubs for the veggie choices, which have improved again with the newest menu. I appreciate the improvements to the healthy choices selection, as well, making it easier for people on special diets to eat out with friends and family without feeling like freaks.

Nice wetherspoons. Even allowed us to bring our dogs into the beer garden. Its a shame more dont allow then, as they would get more custom.
