We had booked a table in the restaurant but were set up in the 'Snug' instead as there was a large party in. We were happy with that as the Snug has a better atmosphere, though is a bit dated. Our food was good, the staff were welcoming and the service efficient.

Dropped in for lunch while waiting for the ferry as weather very wet. Had a lovely relaxed lunch with friendly informative staff. Food was lovely and portions large - a bit large for us at lunchtime. Cullen skink was the best i have tasted with large chunks of fish. We chose a main course portion. - perhaps starter portion would have been sufficient for lunch.

We had booked a table, but it wasn't laid. The dining room is cramped & the food was nothing special.

Dined in the Snug in the evenings 3 nights and 3 breakfasts, good food and good table service from the young lady who was excellent. If only that could be said of the Management who seamed to spend all there time in the Bar, this bring me to my Bill and the £30 charge to it for Whisky which was drunk by a group who left early that morning. My concern is that it did not seam to bother them that they would have overcharged me. A point I made on my Review of the Hotel which despite them commenting on quite a few other reviews who stayed at about the same time They Have Not Had The Decency to Reply.

Like others before we arrived for the Jura ferry and to kill time wandered into this cosy bar within the hotel. The manager and staff gave us a wonderfully warm welcome (it was also hot and sunny outside!). In no time we had been offered a variety of beers, some excellent local ones, and shortly afterwards the freshly prepared food which we had ordered seemingly moments before. All this delivered with a smile and good humour. We were also given a tour of the hotel's comfortable looking bedrooms, with their idyllic setting overlooking the loch side and ferry departure point. All noted, very much for future support when revisiting lovely Islay. Highly recommended.

Far and away the best seafood platter I have ever eaten. A huge half lobster, massive crab, scallops and langoustines in garlic butter with salad and onion bread. Absolutely fabulous.

There is a restaurant and pub and we were rather confused when we were asked to sit in the pub with our kids under the sign stating that no under-18's allowed. However the food is good pub food and there is a good selection of drinks - including whisky, of course. The staff are friendly and the facilities are clean. Maybe not the best restaurant on the Islay but prices are reasonable and there are not many other places to eat in the area!

we were short on time but needed food before our ferry back to the mainland - we stopped for wedges and pints. Such a lovely place. Historic, Warm and the owner was so kind and relayed great stories of her family, friends and life on Islay. Not to be missed

We love this place, and ate here 3 times in 2 weeks. The lady who runs it is big and friendly and absolutely super. so nice. nothing was too much trouble. the views are great, I love the old fashioned feel of the place, and the food is superb. I cannot fault one thing. Here I found you get old fashioned service with a smile. I wish we could bottle this place and take it with us.

Had been twice previously and had good food but visit last year very poor.. Felt very unwelcome as weren't guests. Our two daughters ages were challenged by our host - they were both over 18. She insisted on talking their driving licences away for some reason to record their details - very uncomfortable. Wouldn't recommend a visit. Much better food elsewhere on Islay.

I popped into the Snug Bar looking for a bite to eat between distillery visits. In the Port Askaig area, there is a very limited supply of food establishments. There is much that I can write that I found disappointing about this establishment, however I will limit it to the main points of contention. 1. The Environment - if you're looking to be taken back in time, a long way back, then the musty, poorly lit room, the ale-stained tables and the "historic" decor will certainly appeal...2. Food Quality - both the quality of the food and the quantity was disappointing for a location so close to the sea. The value certainly wasn't there either.3. Service - or lack of it really...weekday lunch hour does not appear to be their busy time. Staff were slow to interact and impossible to find when it came to pay the bill. The environment seems more tuned towards the Friday and Saturday night boozers.A real disappointment and I would recommend an alternative dining experience for food in the area.

No service. Food just ok. Got yelled at when we tried to find an employee to pay our bill & we had to walk into an employee's only area just to find someone. Got told to ring the bell......couldn't see it for all the notifications/signs/rules taped around it on the wall! Bar/restaurant looked grotty & just plain old. Wait until Bridgend.....it's not far & you'll be glad you did.

Cosy and intimate the snug bar is a little tired looking but the food and service far makes up for it. We ordered Mac and cheese with chips, fish and chips and Cullen skink, all was out of this world but the macaroni and cheese deserves a special mention thick and creamy and very cheesy would definitely have it again.

Had lunch in the old port bar. Description on menu does not match the actual food. Prawns were shrimp tails. Owner was not in the least bothered about our disappointment. Staff are lovely very pleasant with excellent customer care. The owner should take lessons from them. We did get a reduction on the price when asked for but the owners abruptness has put us off from returning to her establishment ever again.

The Restaurant in the Port Askaig Hotel - including the bar and snug - serves simple pub-style food. The and chips are good if not exceptional. There is a good selection of local and other beers and ales, and - of course - whisky. Local sea food is fresh and simply served. This is not haute cuisine, but rather a pleasant place to eat after a day of touring the island, or when you arrive by ferry. Service is friendly but not especially efficient. It will be very crowded in high season.

My two friends and i had sailed all day and decided to moor at Port Askaig for supplies, shop was closed for an hour so decided to go for a meal at the Port Askaug Hotel.I was dismayed at the greeting we recieved on entering the hotel, the guy (never gave his name) who i assume was responsible for customers shuffled us into the snug bar with grunts and snorts, didnt look happy. We order pints and asked for menus and this guy just stares at us like were idiots, i mean were not in smart casual lol but surely our money is as good as the next guys, anyways we order 3 sirloin steaks at £20 quid a head and when arrived at taable the "guy" had no idea whos steak was whos, poor show...steak was....well......steak, 3 slices of carrot and 2 green beans is absolutely disgraceful in anybodys eyes and as for the childs handfull of chips, they wouldnt feed a child. No offer of condiments and had to help ourselves, i asked for pepper sauce and again this guy looks at me like "WHAT", goes and asks and comes back and barks "no sauce", (its not hard to put crushed peppercorns, whisky and cream in a pan and thicken). All in all, unless starvation has taking hold i would avoid this place like the plague, unwelcoming, drab, miserable staff, incredibly poor customer service, food and portion quality, not to mention the fact we were fleeced about £80 for the non priveledge.Gives scottish tourism a bad name, Would rather have had a Pot Noodle!!

Oh Dear Lord, a truly, I was going to say uneatible meal, but I guess maybe, if I was one of the millions of starving folk in the world, I would have lower expectations. A bit of advice.. don’t order the steak and kidney pie… not even able to confirm the peas, I suggest you ask for the mashed potatoes and stick to that !
