How is it even possible to prepare and serve soup that is completely inedible? I regularly go out for lunch on a Saturday with my elderly Mum and we reliably enjoy soup and bread with a pot of tea at various cafes in the Hawick,Jedburgh and Kelso area. We thought we'd try Woodside today. On arrival we noted that the soup choices were chunky vegetable and tomato or carrot and orange but on our way in, we spotted a customer trying to navigate the former with a spoon.....she would have been better equipped with a knife and fork. We opted for the carrot and orange.......bad move, it was sour and inedible.......and to add insult to injury, the bread rolls could only be described as those supermarket par-baked rolls without being treated to the luxury of the final bake. Absolutely appalling......and if anyone cares to comment, I am local and various friends and family used to work there when it was an amazing place to eat. Definitely need a rethink 🤔

My Wife and I stopped here with our 2 dogs on our drive to the Highlands. The main car park in town is nearby so just time for our 4 legged family members to lift a leg before arrival. Water bowls available for them. My wife and I settled for the soup and sandwich deal (£7 each) which was served in the garden on a lively warm day. The sandwiches were thick and well filled with high quality ham. The homemade minestrone soup was filling and delicious. Pleasant service. Clean toilets - no need to use the public pay toilets. I would stop here again.

Lovely place, especially if you can get a window seat near the bird feeders. You could sit for hours and watch a host of garden birds as they feed. There is a warm atmosphere and the home made cakes are out of this world. My only itsy-bitsy grumble? The coffee is excellent, but it comes in very small cups.

We enjoyed our visit here. The atmosphere is very pleasant indeed being surrounded by the gardens. Service was also excellent and the menu is wonderfully wide ranging with superb cakes, soups and a good variety of hot meals and sandwiches. The only substantial point we would make which reduces an 'excellent' score is value. The jacket potato was very small and microwaved and even with a side portion of brie cheese and salad seemed poor value for just under £9.00. Cake portions are also expensive and overall we didn't feel it was good value for money.

In a different universe another Mike is still sitting there working his way through the catalogue of fantastic looking cakes, roulades and tarts and probably feeling a bit bilious by now. Me, I just had the minty tray bake, steeled myself and left with eyes averted, but I treasure the memory of that cake cabinet and will warm myself on cold cheerless days with that memory. Some things are still right in this world.

We stopped here for a look around the garden centre and decided to have lunch at the same time. The restaurant is warm, cosy and has a friendly ambience. You are requested to take a seat and choose what you want from the menu on the table, then you go to the counter and place your order. The food arrives quite soon and in our case was delicious. We both had soup and a sandwich, in my case a hot spicy mushroom soup and a smoked salmon sandwich, my wife had a creamy cauliflower soup and a roast beef sandwich which came with a side tomato pickle, I tried it and it was really good. We both somewhat greedily decided to have a slice of cake to round off the meal but the most rounding off was to ourselves as the portions were magnificent. I had a ‘very carrots’ carrot cake which will go down as probably the best ever, and it was very rich, my wife had a very dark chocolate with stout cake, again, very rich. On top of everything else the whole meal was very reasonably priced. This is a super place, a little out of the way but well worth the effort of finding. Loved it !!❤️

Stopped in for a quick lunch. First impression was that it looked closed from the outside - but as I squinted through the windows I could see people inside. There was a lot of confusion as to whether I could actually have a table despite two two person tables being empty. I was finally allocated a table (in what I think was a quite grudging manner. Although, to be fair, this may have been due to the staff's confusion about whether they were actually reserved or not) so I ordered a Cappucino and a cheddar and bacon tart. Nearly £12 (!) for the two items, so I wasn't expecting a very small coffee and a piece of rubbery and bouncy quiche. I waited for just under 1/2 an hour for the tart, which had a soggy bottom and I suspect had been subjected to the tender mercies of a microwave. It was a small piece and the coffee was small too. I couldn't see any bacon and I certainly couldn't taste any, although the chutney was nice and the salad fresh, but safe to say I won't be eating here again. It's such a shame as the Garden Centre is wonderful, but the cafe really lets it down.

A hidden gem in the Borders, this original rustic tearoom and wonderful nursery is a treasure and such a great alternative to the typical garden centre cafe. Here the welcoming staff strive to serve simple but quality lunches and sweet treats. Choose something decadent but beautifully home made from the dessert fridge, all decorated with edible flowers. The homemade soups and chunky bread are super wholesome and the giant scones are so good that they've run a workshop on baking them at the tearoom! Highly recommended. Snuggle up beside the wood fired stove in wintry weather or eat outside in the fabulous walled garden in summer sunshine. Evening meal special events also regularly feature.

Off the beaten track so you need a car. Plenty of parking although the approach road is a bit rough. Plenty to do with plants to buy, a garden shop and the wild area. The tearoom is accessible to those with mobility issues as are the toilets. I have been twice, the second time with my wife. Between two visits three soups were tried. Two good but the Celeriac one was bland. I had the chili chicken with squash. There were heaps of it and it was very tasty. I also had carrot cake for the second time and loved it. My wife had a ploughman's lunch of which there was plenty but she thought the ham was too thin. Her ginger and rhubarb tart was great. Two coffees each made up lunch. The service was friendly and reasonably quick although l did notice that getting the food hot enough was a problem for customers nearby. There were also birds at window feeders to provide the cabaret. A nice tearoom but not enough meat choices to make this a regular lunch stop. The prices were reasonable for the quality offered. Lack of choices is why l have scored three rather than four or five..

A truly enchanting place - what a find. Situated a short distance from Ancrum this is a really incredible location. The cafe is situated within a historic walled garden and is in a lovely wooden lodge. The interior has local art works hanging and old fashioned tea cups - a real vintage feel to the room and very cosy. At the table where I sat just outside the window were bird feeders and I watched a whole variety of tiny birds feeding and flying right up close to the window - really thoughtful to have placed the feeders here and children would be captivated! I had a lovely pot of herbal tea and felt truly relaxed. All the food is made fresh on site and there is great selection of cakes and scones and tray bakes on offer as well as home made soups. It is all very good value. A good old fashioned tea room! A garden centre is also on site that has great selection of very healthy plants and gardening equipment for sale and there is an RSPB hut/information centre and garden to visit to. The cafe/garden centre run events throughout the year. I highly recommend calling in for tea and cake.

I have been here a number of times as it is local to me. I like the garden centre and staff there are always helpful. The tea shop is nice, but I think a little over egged. Prices are too high for what you get. I recently had a poor experience which will put me off revisiting. It was reasonably busy, but the three members of staff were too busy faffing about with washing up to notice that we had been sat waiting for a vastly over priced lunch for over 15 minutes. When it was delivered there was no apology for the wait. The cake we had ordered was also half the size of the pieces being delivered to the other customers. It had supposed to have been been a treat lunch out for my daughter,On paying, I was asked if everything had been Ok and I mentioned my disappointment in the size of cake compared to everyone elses. The assistant said she hadn't seen the size of our cake and that often she felt the portions were too big anyway. She wasn't really interested in an opinion, nor did she offer any apology, so why bother to ask? Not the usual standard of service and I will look for an alternative in the future. I don't complain very easily.

I'd been given a voucher as a present for Afternoon Tea for two, so myself & my wife booked for yesterday afternoon, Sunday 19th Sept. I asked for a window table but the member of staff had already reserved one without me needing to ask. The window tables allow you to see the wild bird activity on the many feeders outside & on the windows! Afternoon tea consisted of small egg sandwiches, cheese & pickle sandwiches, well presented with edible flowers & salad leaves. A pot of tea for two and then fruit scone with butter, ample jam & cream, also decorated with small flowers, delicious. If that wasn't enough, we also had a slice of Victoria Sponge, a small square of chocolate tray bake & shortbread. Really enjoyed it & felt full! We've been to the plant nursery & tea room before but not recently. We've always found the staff very friendly & the service very good. A tea room by day and a restaurant some Friday nights. In the mornings, scones are freshly made and often still warm. Soup is homemade and uses seasonal produce, often from the kitchen garden. Sandwiches are freshly made and enjoyable. The Friday evening dining is beautifully done, either by Suki Barber, a prizewinning cook, or by Jane, the resident cook. Both make beautiful home cooked seasonal produce, locally sourced and use veg, herbs etc from the kitchen garden when available. You take your own wine at a £1 corkage charge. We arrive at 7.00 in the summer months and begin the evening with a leisurely drink outside on the lawn, or a wander round the garden centre. Everyone eats at the same time. There is no menu choice, but if people intimate beforehand, something different is offered, including a vegetarian option. When Suki cooks, we often have her own home smoked salmon or cheese. woodside produce an email newsletter. It's good to sign up to this, as you then know when the evening dining is happening, and also what is going to be on the menu. This is not a drop,in on chance evening though, you really need to book.

They now take your order at the table. The problem is that they just DON'T - take your order. We waited for more than 30 minutes and no-one came near us. Other parties arrived after we did and had their orders taken but didn't get their food. We did not have our order taken so after 30-40 minutes of being ignored, we left and went elsewhere. we are regular visitors to this little cafe, and enjoy the banter with the young waitresses and staff. its pleasant to hear where they are all off to on their life journeys, and as vegetarians for over 35 years- been delighted by the friendly advice and help given by the young vegan waitress regarding which foods are suitable for us to eat. However today our eyes were opened to the attitude of a more senior staff member towards those with more specific dietary requirements!polite explanation was offered regarding requirements of a particular group of vegetarian customers, and the poor waitress was told 'I don't care ' very loudly( dare I say shouted? ) and belittled in front of several customers and staff. if only this behaviour was a one off by a harassed member of staff- but was witnessed by ourselves and commented on by several other customers throughout our visit, and apparently on other occasions according to others present.my heartfelt sympathy goes out to these young waitresses, but we will not be returning to this lovely little cafe. Prices are very reasonable.Good special offers, such as the winter Bakeoff. Comfortable old wooden tables and chairs, gardening books to browse through, bird feeders at the windows.Usually busy and buzzy. Unfortunately no baby-changing facilities in the toilets. The old walled garden has surfaced paths so you can stroll even in bad weather - the shop near the entrance has lots of interesting garden stuff but unfortunately permanent arctic temperatures inside. Situated within a beautiful walled garden. Came here following a recommendation from a friend, it was very busy on a sunny, February afternoon, fortunately people were just leaving a window seat which we occupied, the window had an outside bird feeder attached which kept the kids (and adults) occupied identifying the different birds. There's a chart for the non ornithologists, also a notebook you can jot down your sightings at the feeder or in the grounds. The menu was varied using local produce and everything was freshly made. The service was great and staff welcoming. Everything in the garden has name signs, although it all looked a bit unloved still, we will definitely return as the seasons change to see the plants and trees at their best. The owners have hit their niche perfectly with this place, recommend.

We spent a glorious few hours here today, had a great wander around the excellent displays of plants, learned about composting from Dave Allen, enjoyed tea, coffee and scones outside, were served by very friendly, helpful staff - thoroughly recommended.

We visit Woodside every time we visit relations in Kelso or are travelling north to Edinburgh. The staff are so friendly, nothing is too much bother. The food is great value and quality is five star plus.

This is set in a garden centre which is in a walled garden. The garden centre is pleasant to look round but I thought the plants expensive. We went to the cafe for a snack and had scone and coffee followed by shortbread. The food was fine and coffee hot although a bit milky. The item of note was the desperately slow service. This was not helped as they brought everything out to you without using trays. The table with eight people on kept them busy for ages as each person had a meal plus drink meaning about 8 trips to serve them. Whey they did not use trays and give you cakes etc when you ordered I do not know. However it was pleasant to be able to sit and chat in a nice garden whilst we waited.

Our visit this morning was spoilt by a mature lady behind the counter who appeared as though she didn't want to be there! Her manner was miserable, a smile was lacking and she spoke to people in a rude fashion. On the up side the young lady with blonde hair was very bright, friendly and had a complete contrast in outlook towards customers. Location is great, cakes, coffees etc are all excellent as is the actual garden centre. Sometimes, we think young people are the ones with 'attitude', not so in this case, well done to the young lady who was very welcoming to us.

We are fairly frequent visitors here as we live close by. The staff are always friendly and happy and the service is very good. The food is freshly prepared on site and is always tasty with good portions. The premises are always nice and warm with a friendly atmosphere. The views are nice of the garden and the birds with the feeders restocked daily there are always a wide variety of birds. In short a nice place with unpretentious food.

Worth the effort to find this charming little coffee stop in a former walled garden that is now also a garden centre. The staff are very friendly- coffee good and they have some excellent home baking

What a pretty location; we took some friends here for coffee and cake, and found the setting to be lovely. There was a fair selection of homemade cakes and biscuits. (Coffee cake was beautiful and light, biscuits not so good). I'd definitely recommend this for a afternoon out.

This is signposted of the A68 to the right (travelling North) between Jedburgh and St Boswells - just a few hundred yards after the turn, and definitely worth the effort. The garden and nursery are worth a visit in their own rights, but the cafe is also a treat. Very good home made soup. cakes, scones, coffee. Pleasant ambience and location. Only thing that sometimes needs patience is the service which can be slow when the place is busy. So avoid Sunday lunchtime - but otherwise it is a real treat.

This was our second visit to Loulabelle's, the other being in 2023. Lots of delicious food plus friendly staff. We had lunch before visiting a nearby attraction, then nipped back for tea and a cake afterwards. Not cheap, but everything is delicious. The decorations include some great pictures.

I'm afraid I won't be back. Went to use the facilities and I went into toilets and heard giggling didn't hang around but imagine my dismay when 2 of your cleaners came out of said toilets doing up trousers and straightening themselves up!. Absoloutley disgusting. I've the names of both. To say I'm appalled is an understatement. I came in to shop not witness sex acts. In uniform at the workplace! I'll be informing my friends and family. If this is how you allow your staff to behave! Disgusting if my daughter had been with me and saw that I'd have rang the polis straight away!

Lovely proper bookshop with a cafe and deli. We were just after a quick coffee but couldn't resist trying the delicious cakes. The flat white was good, strong and hot but rather a small cup. Cakes were as good as they looked. Bought a few books for the Grandchildren and had a browse around the well stocked deli. Loved spotting authors we knew from the pictures on the wall. Will visit again when in the area.

Very disappointed, arrived for lunch bringing my brother and wife as they are on holiday, had to wait 10 minutes to be seated although there was an empty table where we were standing, we were given menu's then totally ignored for the next quarter of an hour, a young waitress saw us and I asked could we place an order (we were going to have a 3 course lunch) she said yes and then went over and chatted with another waiter, after a further 5 minutes we decided to leave and go into kelso, we went to a place in kelso and were treated correctly and served immediately.
