Sadly, it was not to our expectations. Such good reports of how amazing the food was, was very disappointing. The menu on line, is no comparison to the menu offered on the day. My son had baked potato with tuna ect, with no complaint… myself and other son, because of lack of choice decided to have fried breakfast, thinking you can’t possibly mess this up, but it was disgusting!it was like they had cooked the ingredients in dirty old fat… my son struggled to eat his, where generally he is a good eater and tries to eat mine too. When the barman picked up our finished full plates, he didn’t ask if everything was ok… I had to tell him , the bacon tasted strange as did the fried tomatoes… I would not eat there again, Daisies cafe I would recommend, it’s cheaper and tastier. Come away very disappointed as trip advisor made the bird in hand sound brilliant… I was looking to have a family celebration in the near future, but it won’t be there now. So disappointed

We found this place incidentally when googling somewhere to stop on our drive home from Easter holidays. What an absolute find! Incredible Sunday dinner at such a reasonable price! 13.95 for an adult portion which was huge with the most amazing Yorkshires! And £7 for a child which is so much cheaper than anywhere else we can usually find! And they had brilliant portions too. Staff incredibly attentive, food was delicious. We will stop here on the way home from our next staycation for sure!

My partner and I absolutely loved the roast dinner! The meat was cooked perfectly, potatoes had a lovely crisp. The staff were very friendly and happy. The pub was very cosy. We will 100% be going back for a roast, very good price for the quality of food.

We stayed in the village & decided to try the Sunday roast, which was excellent. Friendly staff & a fairly decent pint of cask ale, which was surprising as non of the bar staff knew how to pull a pint correctly. The only let down was the poor state of the gents toilets which looked like they don’t get cleaned properly. The sink was disgusting with aged dirt around the taps & back plate.

We were staying at a nearby Bed & Breakfast who's ower rang to ask them to have a log fire waiting for me, as I mentioned that I like the heat. Sure enough, there was a roaring cosy fire, along with candle-lit tables. The pub was packed (socially distanced, of course) but the staff were attentive and professional. The extensive menu was chalked on a bard, and I chose jumbo prawns in garlic butter, and a roasted vegetable tart with dressed salad. The prawns were the fattest, juiciest ever and almost a meal in itself. My husband chose whitebait, and pork medallions in apple, cider and cream, and both our meals had hand cooked saute potatoes. it was lovely to eat a pub that isn't part of a chain.

We've been here many times over the years, so rather disappointed by our last visit. Felt covid-safe, with nhs check in and automatic hand sani at the entrance but the staff weren't wearing any face coverings, I think visors would be sensible (I know masks might be uncomfy during a shift). Staff both very friendly but service was quite slow, two of our group found hairs in the food which was a bit grim. It sort of felt like we'd gone back to the nineties in terms of food/quality, and not very child friendly either. Great place to pop in for just a drink but wouldn't recommend for food after this visit. Hopefully just having a bad day and back up to scratch soon!

The staff here are friendly and attentive. The atmosphere is lovely. There was a huge log fire burning and the food came in good time and was delicious. It is obviously popular with the locals which is a good sign. They had a new barman who did a great job of making us feel welcome.

We really enjoyed our meal - it’s the first time I have been back for many years. Service at the bar was slow but very friendly. We were seated at a floating table close to the bar and unfortunately very close to the menu board so we did have a constant stream of people stood right next to us reading it and deliberating. Not the best. It’s very dark and draughty in there if they have the door open. That all said, the food was sublime and such good value. I had the smoked salmon platter, the rump steak and the Belgian waffle (piggy me!) and my partner had goats cheese on a field mushroom, pork medallions and ice cream. All delicious and the bill for two (three courses, mind!) was just £60. I would highly recommend visiting this lovely, buzzing, traditional pub where they cook to absolute perfection.

We enjoyed two evening meals here during our week's summer holiday. We managed to get a table without booking for the first meal, but made sure we booked for the second. It is a very popular, busy pub and it is advisable to book in advance as you may not get in otherwise. Car park is small and full, so you will probably need to park on the road outside. Food is delicious and portions generous. However, there are only two items on the main menu (on the blackboard) which are vegetarian - mushroom carbonara and vegetable pie with salad and saute potatoes. Both cost about £10 which is pretty decent value. Was a bit disappointed however when the salted caramel icecream I had ordered didn't appear as it had been sold out. Had to have something else instead which was equally as nice so not a problem.

We were recently staying in the village and wanted to find somewhere for dinner on Saturday night. We booked another pub, but our landlady advised us to go to the Bird in Hand. I wasn't sure as I had read a few negatives reviews. However, I am so glad we decided to go. It is a quaint village pub and the food was excellent. We only had a main meal and dessert, but the quality and quantity were amazing. The lamb rump was gorgeous as were the accompanying potatoes and vegetables. I never eat dessert but decided to go for the Lemon Meringue roulade. It was also served with honeycomb ice cream and was a treat to eat. My husband had the chicken with an amazing and huge crumble to follow with custard. So if you are thinking of eating here and have read the negatives, don't be put off as it is really good food.

Be careful what you order. We ordered the tempura battered hake, sadly what we got was most likely haddock but most definitely not chunky flakey hake, very disappointing. We raised it with the staff who disappeared off. When raised again they just denied it. The chips were dry, service poor despite being quiet. I called in with 3 friends last week for a drink on Saturday night. We asked for a quick bowl of chips/sandwich/something small to go with our drinks. It was 8 o’clock on a Saturday night. The landlord refused to do so and said the kitchen was closed. We then proceeded to sit in the bar and watch a family of 5 that were already in the bar get served 5 full plates of food 10 minutes later. 15 minutes after this there were desserts being served. This is not the first time I have been refused service for food in the past couple of months (during service hours) and I find the place some what pretentious and lacking in drive to provide a welcoming atmosphere. Oh and the beer was off. A shame for a local pub.

After 15 years of frequenting the Bird in Hand, I don’t think we will be returning for food. A real shame as it’s our local, and have had some lovely meals in the past. Our meal last night was no where near as good as it used to be, the food was over cooked steak ordered rare came well, floppy carrots, burnt onions in the sauce, even the breaded sea food platter starter was over done. Service was slow and poor, no one asked how our food was until we were ‘finished’. Terrible for the price of the food - we don’t mind paying for good food but £80 for 2 poor meals with poor service doesn’t seem right to me..

I would love to tell people about the food, the service and the atmosphere and the service - but unfortunately they were ALL denied us. I had attended a concert in the village church with friends and pre-booked a table for four for 8.45pm, having checked that they were doing food. I arrived 7 minutes late, despite going ahead of some of my party to get there quicker, to be told that the chef had gone home, and there was no food. A most perfunctory apology, negated by the accusation that it was because I was late. This is wholly unacceptable and spoiled what was otherwise a good evening. I will not be going there again.

Went here for a meal on one of only a two night break so it seemed even more disappointing to be served such dreadful food. Something told me it would not be great so chose a cheaper dish, the carbonara. Complete shock to be served the dish with fusilli not spaghetti! My husband had a rib eye steak (one of the most expensive items) what a mistake! Over done and over priced! I haven't eaten food cooked at such poor quality since student days, in fact I suspect it was cooked by a student as there didn't seem to be anyone running the place apart from three young women! Avoid this pub and perhaps it might sort itself out as the village itself is pretty and worth a look and as a small community this pub should be playing a better part in attracting and satisfying its tourist trade.

I had the steak version which was reasonably well prepared but only half size compared to those elsewhere. The small lettuce garnish was drenched in some sort of garlicky dressing ..totally ruined. Very expensive at £9.95.To add insult to injury the barmaid tried to overcharge me for the baguette by £1 - perhaps because I offered a large note in payment ? I would have been better off buying a sandwich or pie from the village shop across the road and just buying a pint to drink at the outside tables. I've never really felt the need to write a review of anywhere before , (hence the title!) but having eaten at this lovely pub last evening , I do feel compelled to compliment them on a truly enjoyable evening . We were trying to think of somewhere fairly local to go , as I had a busy day , and my partner had just finished a long shift , and neither of us fancied cooking (usually my task!) . So we arrived at The Bird in Hand , wouldn't have been my pick if I'm honest , but I wasn't driving . However , what a treat we were in for . My partner had sampled the Chicken Curry before and without hesitation , plumped for it again . I had a pasta carbonara , with bacon and mushrooms and cracked black pepper . Both fairly simple dishes I would agree , but rarely cooked so exquisitely as to demand a glowing tribute . Lots of tasty bacon and mushrooms , and the creamy sauce was simply divine , just the right amount of pepper too . I have eaten at some very fine Italian restaurants around the country , and this dish was on a par with any of them , I doff my cap sir . My partners curry was equally tasty , I got to try some , as the portions were more than generous ! Well kept beer , helpful friendly staff and the owner on hand to oversee everything , but not intrude . Just the relaxation we both needed . Thank you so much again , and I'm sure North Curry will definitely be on my radar in the not too distant future .

We visited here during a holiday and our first impressions were lovely loca pub with great decor in keeping with the age of the pub. The food was wonderful, very tasty with very good portions, lovely quality and the drinks were well priced. There was also a good choice of food too. The only downside was that we were short changed, It happened with the drinks but we thought it was just our error so let it go as we were ordering food but upon settling the bill we were billed too much which my husband didn't highlight until leaving the pub when we were in the carpark so it was too late to go in and rectify this and being people who don't like to complain we let it go. We kind of got the impression that the pub is frequented by the local community and as we were outsiders we were not made to feel so welcome, saying that though we cannot fault the waitresses at all who were very friendly and very efficient.

I hadn't been to this pub for many years so it was lovely to return and find the place is in great shape. The staff are very friendly and welcoming - a reflection of the warm atmosphere in the pub itself which has everything a "local" should have, including a roaring log fire on a chilly autumn day.The food was excellent! I had the chicken breast with port and Stilton sauce & my friend the fish medley. Both were beautifully presented and freshly cooked - this is not a fast food restaurant and it's worth the wait whilst I enjoyed my pint of real ale.We shared a pudding of lemon & ginger crunch..which was perfect! All in all a fabulous place to visit if you're in the area and one which I will return to for sure.

Old country style pub lots of character, we were welcomed by the staff who found us a table even though they were fairly well booked up, the food was first class good portions and priced well. We will return when next in the area.

I was staying locally on business and this pub was recommended. The menu was really varied with something for everyone. The food was superb and the atmosphere in the pub was great. The locals were really friendly as well. So why not 5 stars?? The menu's are written on blackboards in 2 different parts of the pub. They aren't easy to read and you need to stand over peoples tables to go through them. Surely printed menu's aren't difficult!Would definitely revisit if I was in the area again!

As we are staying in the area for the weekend , thus pub was recommended . Service quick - to order and to be served. Food was very tasty. Ambience was good- can't really complain - for us everything went all well.

I'm not a particularly 'pubby' person, but as a single woman I always feel comfortable here. James, our host, is lovely, as are his staff. Have been to several funeral 'wakes' here, as well as holding small meetings in the bar. This is definitely a pub for the community, although it sees lots of passing trade as well and all are made welcome.

Decided to revisit this restaurant and had a very enjoyable meal mainly because of the good selection of food at reasonably good prices. Service was good and the wine prices are also reasonably priced for a change. We all tried different main courses and all four of us enjoyed without getting to excited but would say it is good quality food with a good selection to choose from and not expensive at all.Still looking for something more special but will come again for "let's go out for something to eat!"Only downside on this occasion was the seating is a little cramped with four around a small table and other dinners at close quarters.

We have eaten here while staying nearby, several times, and never been disappointe - always lett feeling full and happy.. Nice young waiting staff, regulars (plus dogs) at the bar. Excellent menu with generous portions and fresh local produce....fire burning in the winter...and right in the heart of a beautiful village.

First time in this country pub following several recommendations. Lovely, traditional country pub with one of the nicest roast lunches I have had for some time. Lovley atmosphere and great service.Only downside is our table for 11 was seated at a table that would have been a squeeze for 10 people! Meant we ate quick, with an arm relay gong on, and moved on to dessert elsewhere, It was a hot day too so being so squished didnt help.Very popular with the locals. Will return again to try the restaurant, but in a smaller party,

Went to this pub for my husbands birthday last Sunday. We had heard good reports so thought we would give it a try. We hadn't booked but on arrival they said they could fit us in. We had to ask which table we could have and as no one came to take our order we went to the bar to order for ourselves. We waited an hour for our meal to arrive with no explanation or apologies. The young lady put our meals down and mumbled something about one more dish of veg to come, but that was the last we heard about it. The bar/waiting staff were to say the least showing no interest in the customers and we did notice one person get up and leave after waiting for someone to take his order without success. We finished our main course and after waiting a further 20 minutes for someone to take our plates away and offer us pudding we gave up and went to the bar to pay. I would like to add that it was not very busy so this was not the reason for us being ignored. Not once were we asked if we enjoyed our meal or if everything was ok. We were charged for a drink we didn't have although this was put right as soon as we mentioned it. It is a great pity as the food itself was really good but the service was so bad that it was almost non existent.

Went to the Bird in Hand last night for a birthday meal. We had called in a few days before for a drink and to see what the menu was like, as I am vegetarian. The young lady behind the bar could not have been more helpful. Arrived with friends and were all very pleased with the meals we received. The quality of the food was excellent and the helpings are very generous. Staff are friendly and efficient. It was a Wednesday night and the restaurant was very busy, a very good sign. We really enjoyed our first meal at the Bird in Hand and will be back again very soon.

We were a party of 6 plus 2 little ones. We all enjoyed the carvery which was very tasty. Good selection of veg and extras. The cauliflower cheese was the best I've tasted. The dessert was lovely too. We all had the sticky toffee pudding and ice cream....delicious. Lovely attentive staff. Nothing was too much trouble. We were made to feel very welcome. We'll definitely return

I come here frequently with friends and family. There is a good variety of food. I always aim for the pynes breakfast full English. It's lovely, and good value. Service is never too long either. It can get busy, but I've always managed to find a seat. Well worth a visit.
