Our party consisted of a vegan, a couple of fussy eaters and one 'normal' fella looking for Sunday lunch. The chef was more than happy -and able - to work around our requirements and the resulting food was amazing; the vegan Wellington was wonderful. There's a warm, welcoming and friendly atmosphere. After lunch, we took a look at the resident emus and goats before heading back to camp for an obligatory Sunday afternoon nap. We would definitely visit again and highly recommend.

Visited for the Sunday Carvery. Really delicious. Meat excellent quality, lovely potatoes and veg and massive tasty Yorkshire puddings. My husband also really liked his draught beer as I did my red wine. All the staff very friendly. Will definitely be returning for the carvery.

The establishment is very spacious airy, and quiet, I Went for Sunday Lunch, and The Potatoes were way overcooked and not very nice, very difficult to cut open and eat, false teeth users be very wary They were pretty tasteless, and The peas were undercooked and a little hard in the middle again pretty tasteless .gravy looked like it was out of a packet and tasted of nothing, might as well have been coloured water with cornstarch, pork meat was average and devoid of crackling on the top and was lean,I did get some, flavour cooked out of them nice and crunchy though. Yorkshire pudding was massive, tasteless and overcooked, The Beer was a little warm and no choice of the other 3 pumps not in use,.. P.S. Only go if Bev Is on duty you are more likely to get a better experience of dining at this pub.

We found this absolutely delightful pub while we were on our way home from our recent holiday in Devon. We were both very hungry & this place looked inviting so we stopped. It was a very quiet time of day but the landlord was an utter delight! A lovely gentleman who took great care of us, was super friendly & very chatty. We saw that a speciality of this pub was the pizza so both me & my husband settled for a meat feast pizza & ordered a pot of tea while we waited. While we waited I noticed this place is actually a 4 star hotel & made a note of this as we holiday in Devon frequently. When our pizza arrived it was sublime! Freshly cooked from scratch. Miles of stingy cheese & very well loaded with topping. I must say this was one of the best pizza I have had in years & I even had difficulty finishing my portion as it was so filling. The bar staff here are also super friendly & gave us hot water for our tea pot & looked after us excellently. We were both sad when we left. As I noted this was also a hotel we have decided to stay here on our next trip & sample more of the superb menu & a good bottle of wine. Thank you for your terrific hospitality, which was really appreciated on our long drive back to our east Anglia home. We (& our big dog, Bear!) will not forget this lovely pub! See you soon!

Terrible service. We arrived and were given a menu, ordered and food arrived in good time. After waiting for at least half an hour we had to ask for the dessert menu. It took 10 minutes to arrive on a board, waited another 10 minutes and no one took our order. We had to fight at the bar through the locals, one of which was vaping next to the no smoking or vaping sign 😤 We were not asked if we enjoyed our meal, didn’t seem to think to know what we had ordered. No organisation or customer service skills by any of the staff. We will not return

One of the reasons I chose this hotel was because the website said they offered a 'diverse menu with vegan and vegetarian options'. As a vegan and vegetarian this was important to us. Sadly, there was not a single vegan option on the menu which I felt was very misleading as it was specifically stated and the main reason we were eating there. Although the chef was accommodating and they did offer to go shopping for something I could really have done without the big discussion about it in front of everyone at the bar. I was told that they needed advance notice. In 20 years of being vegan I haven’t encountered this before. I was told “there’s no call for it around here” and "the locals only eat things with a pulse". I don't doubt that, but surely in the hospitality industry you are welcoming people from everywhere? Having been on ‘4 in the bed’ I was surprised they weren’t prepared to deal with people from beyond the local area. With so many plant-based options these days , its never been easier to accommodate vegans. I think they need to change their website if they don’t in fact provide the diverse veggie menu they claim they do.

The restaurant had a cosy ambience. Staff were friendly and helpful. The Sunday roast was disappointing. I had a mixture of a slice of roast beef, a slice of roast pork and a slice of Turkey. The roast beef was tough and stringy and difficult to cut, the roast pork was dry and tough, the Turkey was good. There were a lots of vegetables you could choose and a large tasty Yorkshire pudding.

We went here first time just for a drink and the lady behind the bar was lovely so we had a look at the menu and decided to book for our 25 th anniversary for an evening meal the next day. We turned up at 6.30 pm but different bar maid who firstly couldn’t find my booking but we were able to sit where I requested. We ordered drinks and took the menu’s. We waited about 10 minutes before she came over but she got distracted by another customer and didn’t take it. After another 10 minutes I decided to go to bar and order. She wasn’t there and she was the only person serving bar and food ! While I was waiting the owner came by but didn’t ask if I was ok or offer to help. I stood there for almost 6 minutes before the kitchen rang bell and woman came back but rather than acknowledge me she went straight to the kitchen and served food. I wish I had left then but when she came back I ordered our food. It came out quite quick my mum and I had scampi husband famous lasagne according to menu , and dad had fish and chips. Our chips were obviously frozen but some were still hard and they were really dry the scampi had no taste really either. But the worst of all was the lasagna. It was really dry and so hard my husband couldn’t cut it. I went to the bar and told the woman when I paid she took my name but never apologised or offered any discount. I am sorry I have to leave this review as I work in customer service myself but this experience ruined our anniversary.

Had a meal here last night, do not bother, terrible! Walked in and got stared at by all the locals. The bar lady was moaning it was too busy that evening (altho, only two tables with people eating in whole place I could see) and was much more interested in serving the 'locals' Waited for a long while to be eventually served a very obviously over microwaved lasagne with hard crusty edges and looked totally unappealing with a salad that had def seen better days, half a slice of cucumber that had clearly been in fridge for over a week and half a cherry tom and thick chunks of carrot. To charge £14 for this was extortionate. Id be happy to pay that for food that reflected the quality. However this food should never of left the kitchen to be presented to a customer. Will not be returning or recommending to anyone. Shame as the place looks very inviting from the outside.

Only went in for a drink but we were severely limited where we could sit so ended up in the pool table area. It was freezing in there. Pool table wasn’t in use at first but then two people who we assumed worked there as they had mugs of coffee started playing. Ever so difficult to drink when you have someone’s backside just shoved in your face. No comment, no excuse me. Two out of three ales were off so ended up drinking lager. Didn’t really appreciate the political lecture about how it was the government’s fault that they pay 50p for each credit card transaction which is either total codswallop or they just don’t use the right services. My research suggests 1.5% to 6% is the norm but it’s not my problem. Just didn’t get a warm feeling and felt that they were only interested in diners.

Found this online whilst staying in a holiday cottage not far away. Easy to book a table for 2 and our dog. Warm welcome from the staff present. Carvery was great, good choice of veg, roast potatoes were lovely and our dog even got a little taster of the Turkey- thank you! Good value for money, everyone was friendly. The only comment to make is the car park where the EV chargers are is littered with dog poo. So much so that our charging cable needed cleaning before we could put it back in the car. Husband did report it and was told it would be passed on to the landlord.

We went for a carvery on what appeared to be a very busy day. Despite booking, we were told our table had been taken, and they had to prepare a new table. Eventually we were called to the carvery, and our experience just went down hill. The meat may have been fine if it had been carved properly. Perhaps the lady was stressed, but I could have carved better with a spoon. Some of the slices were thicker than steak which made it tough and chewy. She had also called us up when some of the dishes were pretty much empty. The 3 potatoes that were left were soggy and greasy. The vegetables were the worst I've had since school - boiled to oblivion, with no taste or texture. Really grim. It's no exaggeration to say the highlight of our meal was the trickle of gravy that was left and the horseradish. The lady behind the bar was stressed but friendly, and the two stars we've given are for the service alone. We were baffled to see the place so packed out. Sorry, but the food was awful.

The girls front of house were lovely and friendly. We were told to go to table 43 in the restaurant. Having not been here before we weren’t sure where to go but found our way there eventually. The carvery stand had no queue so we went and stood quietly (having not been given any other instruction). The woman serving (late fifties, wearing sunglasses) was very abrupt. “I’ve got another table before you. Sit back down and I’ll call you over when I’m ready”. We sat back down and waited, eventually she did call us back over but again was abrupt and short with us “you’ll get what you’re given, this is what’s left”. The meat was cooked nicely, potatoes were okay and there was a decent gravy. However, the veg was extremely over boiled and the cauliflower cheese gloopy and tasteless. We were a party of three, by the time we got to plate up our food there was only one Yorkshire pudding left. The carvery woman did say she would bring another two to our table, but after 40 minutes these never materialised. During our short conversation with carvery woman she said things like “ugh, it’s none stop. People need to give me a break”, “really hacks me off when people come up for food before I’ve called for their table”, “I’ve been cooking since 7am”, “it’s too busy”. A mediocre carvery is forgivable given that we got there later on in the day, but to be made to feel a nuisance is not nice at all. We definitely won’t rush back.

I just spent half an hr writing a detailed review of our dismal experience here but it failed to post & having already lost the will to live earlier this evening courtesy of The Bickford Arms I will now keep it brief with edited lowlights & move on with my life! Experience - second to none...& by that I mean on a scale of 0-10 I would rate this next to zero on the negative side! Shocking service-15minutes before drink order was taken, a further 15 before food order & then she wanted to give us ‘a few more minutes’ we almost had to physically drag the server back to take our order! Menu- Limited, extremely dated (some of highlights being ‘Salads-ham, cheese, chicken or prawn’ or Specials - Curry of the day - Chicken’! Stop, you’re really spoiling us.) V overpriced..gastro pub prices but def not quality. (£7 for kids meal of shrivelled reheated sausages, cold mash & hydrated, pale peas!) Over 1.5hrs after arrival we finally got our ‘fayre’ (Tongue v firmly in cheek) had to go to bar to get our own drinks after initial order as servers too busy taking wrong orders to wrong tables. Finally 2hrs after arriving with 2 by now v fractious & overtired toddlers I went to bar to pay tab (no way we were waiting any longer!) & to express my views & experience to the manager (sorry..’owner’ as he pompously pointed out..you should be even more ashamed then ‘sir’!) & was immediately told ‘not to come in here moaning & cant we see they’re busy’?!!! I was absolutely shocked & appalled. I have never experienced such atrocious customer service in my life! Rude, awful man. This place, it’s ‘owner’ & the menu need to go back to 1978 where they belong!

Popped in today on the off chance of being able to have lunch. The bar & restaurant were quiet so we were hopeful. Waited patiently at the bar whilst the bar lady served someone else. Another member of staff came in & completely ignored us & continued to type things in to the till. First Lady finished serving, picked up some papers & walked out of the bar! Neither members of staff even acknowledged us; we might of well have been invisible. I’m afraid at this point we walked out. I suspect they didn’t even notice! How rude & what dreadful customer service. Maybe that’s why it was so quiet?? We are local so we will not be back & we will not recommend.

Six of us stopped for a quick bite on the way back to Bournemouth from Cornwall. Although the food was good and the service pretty good, our visit was spoiled by a group of noisy regulars, particularly from one foul mouthed individual who was even vaping on an electronic cigarette at the bar which I thought was prohibited. Even though we were sat at the other end of the restaurant by a fireplace we could clearly hear his disgusting language, We thought he was a barman or the landlord at first as he kept going behind the bar to serve people who were waiting for drinks but it turned out he was a coach driver who lives locally but thinks he owns the place.

Party of 4 one of which was Coeliac. Found the chef to be very knowledgeable of allergens and provided a good choice of gluten free food. Had clearly made an effort to seek alternative solutions for people with intolerance/ allergies. He even provided an off menu sauce for one of the group. Nothing too much trouble. Very helpful and friendly staff. Food was excellent. This was second visit within a couple of months and was not disappointed.

Lovely staff on the day in a pleasing environment, pretty quick food delivery which was pre-ordered 3 weeks before hand. Portion sizes were generous. Quality of food was well below expectation for the party of 4 and did not conform to what was advertised, ie beef wellington was not and for £55 per person a glass of wine or a drink voucher would have gone some way towards a compromise. A Christmas cracker was supplied. Am sorry to say would never recommend or return to this establishment which is a shame because we live local.

Lovely Sunday carvery, good choice of veg and amazing Yorkshire puddings and potatoes we were a family table of 7 with two dogs. Not a problem though we ate on the bar area that had character. Loved it we will definitely go back!

In order to get away from chips I either had to order the stir fry or the sausage and mash. I chose the latter which was OK but, like many other versions I have tried, the onion gravy did not really taste of onion. One of my friends had a beer that he said tasted odd but the barman did not seem interested. It is a pub with pub type meals but I would have liked a wider choice of vegetables.

A very welcoming landlord, good food from a wide menu including meat, fish and vegetarian options. Also a children's menu. Real ale that was kept well.

Called in for a light bite. My hubby and I had ciabbata rolls. As I don't eat meat I had one choice of cheese and onion. The roll was very dry, with some cooked onion and a piece of cheese about half the size of a kraft cheese slice and even thinner. I was gobsmacked. It was served with colelsaw (soggy, not fresh) and salad leaves, uneatable. It was daylight robbery. My hubby had bacon and cheese (must have been other half of slice). However, we had a side order of chips and they were scrummy, the only nice bit of the lunch. We are fairly local, but will not be going back.

After eating here twice very successfully in the past and totally recommended it,sadly I have to say it's gone badly down hill,I'll never visit again, I travelled 60 miles out of my way to meet an ignorant landlord and either his wife or daughter, who let us take a menu and I read out the special board to my partner infront of this odd couple /family to be told know food was available I was then insulted by old fella and young lady or wife so left totally avoid this venue it's gone shockingly bad in last 2 years

Just passing through to Holsworthy and decided to stop for a quick bite.It was quiet but that was better for us as obviously the food wait would be less. The landlord ( Im presuming ) was very friendly.Good menu to choose from and really good prices but we just ordered ham ,egg, chips and a vegetarian Tagliatelle .Really nice ,hot and fresh. Definitely go back again if nearby.

I was in here the other day and had a lunch. The area was a bit cold when not sitting near the fire but not unbearable. When ordering our food at the bar, this was as painful as pulling teeth. The lady behind the bar couldn't seem to understand anything to do with our order and it took a hell of a lot of explanation. Because we were in as two families we ordered separately which was a mistake seeing as our meals came out at separate time which isn't the best for one kid watching another eat. Always trying to end on a high though, when we got our food it was nice and very filling.

We only visited this pub a couple months ago and loved it.. we were back in the area visiting family for Christmas and we're excited to call back into the bickford arms. Oh how I wish we had not bothered!!! The atmosphere was non existent, the staff were extremely miserable. We didn't bother having food.. but whilst haveing a drink heard another table complain about their horrible meal. I'm not sure how this place has drastically changed in less than two months but I won't be returning ever again.. cold empty and rather effortless experience.

Well what can I say!!!We have visited this pub several times over the last 12 months after moving to bude and found this hidden gem when we were down here house hunting and stayed here but something has gone wrong as we went for a meal a few nights ago and the standards have dropped. The food was bland, with a lack of seasoning also the chips were lukewarm and undercooked we should have complained but we waited forever for it to come out so just wanted to eat and goThe 2 girls working were more interested in chatting to themselves than giving us service and we were completely ignored by the old guy behind the bar who was drinking and chatting to a few locals A family who were also sat beside us said there had been staff changes and if this is true I think they have made a huge mistakeThis is not the same pub we loved to visit and it's safe to say we will not be returning or recommending Peter

We were staying locally for a few days and came here to eat following the glowing recommendations by previous guests.Unfortunately, it seems they have a new chef and the food was terrible, so much so that we had to send back one dish (tagliatelle that came out in one large, dry block) and then had to wait 20 mins for the replacement order (a salad). On the other meal, the chips were under-cooked.The service from the bar person was friendly and she did offer a free drink due to the poor food - this, along with them allowing dogs in, is why I give one star.

On arrival we were greated by very friendly staff. Straight away we could sence a very nice atmosphere. We had a three night stay with a full English every morning all cooked to order and very fresh... we ate dinner every evening and the food was amazing. Each night there was something new and exciting on the brilliant specials board. We will never stay anywhere else again when visiting this area. I belive some of the reviews on this pub are extremely harsh as I have never stayed anywhere so clean and friendly. We look forward to our next visit. Thanks to the staff at the Bickford Arms. :)

Whilst the hotel was comfortable and evening staff and food lovely the morning was a different matter. Despite being the only people in the dining room for breakfast we did not get anything to eat. We waited from 8am till 8.45 but no food appeared despite being asked if we wanted a full English that was included in the cost. There was no milk for the tea and we did not see any staff from the time we ordered until we left hungry to get to a family christening. When we said we were leaving the staff member was rude stating she was cooking everything fresh. It has never taken me 40 mins to fry a sausage.

So I thought I would give this place a second chance. I have no idea why!! The food was awful bland and just atrocious I know toddlers that can cook better than this. The atmosphere was worse than a funeral to be honest felt like I was being punished. It was unhygienic and felt like I was being swamped by dust! I will not be coming back and neither will anyone with sense.

We visited earlier on this year and enjoyed a delicious Sunday evening meal! It's great to find pubs that do Sunday evening meals now a days locally. With that memory in mind, we visited on a Sunday Afternoon for a Carvery. The Carvery was very disappointing, the veg was bland and non descript, the meal was borderline Cold and the meat was really disappointing. We eat out a lot and regularly have carverys and both agreed we wouldn't return or rave about this particular one! We arrived just as the Carvery opened so it definitely wasn't due to the time. The staff are pleasant and the bar is well stocked, would return, and previous meals have been nice! Maybe an off day..

We ate here a few months ago and it was ok not really inspiring, we re-visited last week and were very impressed, there was menu with plenty of choice and also a set menu for £20 for 3 courses, we ate of this and it was brilliant, lovely dishes, presented very nicely and the service was much improved also.

A large spoons with lots of seating. There's the normal great Wetherspoons menu with something for everyone. The food came quickly and was well prepared.

Absolutely fantastic, just had a full English, I'm at the xmas fayre and they did us a take out box, ingrediants were top quality and tasted local such as bread, nacon and sausages. Don't find many cafes these days with nice food, most of it is generic bookers rubbish. This was awesome, we both really enjoyed it, thank you xox

Last Thursday, I ordered a Black Forest hot chocolate and specifically requested it be made extra hot with a foil lid to keep it warm. However, by the time I reached my car, removed the foil, and went to sip my drink, it was lukewarm. Despite the staff assuring me it was extra hot, it wasn't. Perhaps the staff should focus more on meeting customer expectations rather than chatting about non-work-related topics."
