I drove for 7 hours to get there after making a phone booking the week before to find the pub closed with no-one answering the phone (even though they were in with a light on and windows open), with no apologies or explanation. Rubbish. Don't bother.

We booked for a meal the previous day and spoke to a pleasant young man who told us no problem, can book you in for 3pm on Sunday 280424. Having travelled 53 miles to get there (we were staying locally) the place was completely shut up!! A large sign outside stated we are open! We phoned from outside and could hear it ringing inside. What a way to run a business, a phonecall to say they were closed would at least let us have time to go somewhere else. What a farce. It's ashame as from what we read and seen from the outside it looked a nice venue.

Booked a table for 4 people and a baby for a roast after hearing about this place on instagram. The table was booked at midday and we arrived 5 minutes before excited for our Sunday lunch. The lights were off and nobody was home! We stuck it out in the car park for 20 minutes or so and tried to call twice before finally giving up. We even gave our number when making the booking, I’ll wait for the phone call apology. What was supposed to be a lovely experience turned into a long and wasted journey as we couldn’t book in anywhere locally at such short notice. Reading through some reviews I can see that this is not the first time this has happened. Utterly disappointing.

Really disappointed!! I had booked a table this evening to celebrate my Sister birthday to be met in the car park by the ? Owner to say we are closed tonight! as we have friends here for drinks and not getting food or our drinks order till tomorrow! I would warn anyone that if you book here you are not guareteed a table I would hate anyone else to have a wasted, journey and trying to find somewhere else to eat at such short notice!!

This is the third time we have eaten here and we have come to the conclusion that this chef is an absolute genius. The food served is done with style and is so full of flavour it is difficult to comprehend. I hope and pray that the Ben Jonson is endorsed by all and that the chef is recognised for the obvious hard work and talent he puts into his craft.

We are staying nearby for our wedding anniversary and were lucky enough to stop in for some food on Friday and ended up going back on Saturday and Sunday! I have never said amazing when asked about food, but this is what I could only verbalise and ended up saying it every time. The atmosphere is friendly and welcoming! If we lived closer, we would be in every week. Thank you for making our anniversary so special.

If you’ve been wondering whether to go or not since this place reopened, just go! We went for Sunday lunch. They’re limiting the choice to roasts and a special on a Sunday which I think is fair enough. Our party had lamb shank, beef and pork belly. We all agreed that the meat was beautifully cooked and very tender. The service is pleasant and unfussy. The space is very welcoming and clean. We had a great time and will definitely go back.

Booked a table for two, 2 weeks in advance for Sunday 10th December at 12.15. Arrived at 12.10 to find all doors locked and the place was in darkness. Stayed for 30 minutes (ringing every 5 minutes) with another couple who had also booked before giving up as, even if they had opened, we would have had a very long wait for food etc. I tried ringing all afternoon and evening to get an explanation with no success. As we had to leave a contact number when booking, I would have appreciated a call from the manager apologising for not being open.

I was in the same 5 person party that included Daphne Martin and when I turned up @ 20:15 with my wife, the other three in our party were sitting in the bar area at a table for 4 even though we had a reservation for 5. We stayed c20 minutes during which time: 1) nobody came to take a drinks order 2) nobody came to tell us how long we would have to wait for a table. 3) nobody bothered to give us a menu My daughter who had made the booking by phone was told when she arrived that they had no record of the booking and they were busy - after that there was absolutely zero contact from any staff member to anybody in our party. At c20:35 we all left as it was totally pointless staying where we weren’t welcome! The point is if when my daughter had arrived they had just apologised saying that they couldn’t honour the reservation due to a mixup, we would have gone elsewhere but considered going back another day. However after being ignored so badly, I wouldn’t go back under any circumstances!

After booking by telephone in the afternoon, we arrived at the arranged time and were told there was no record of the booking. We were told they were very busy. Given a corner table for 4, even though there were 5 of us and left. No drinks order taken, no menus given. Appalling service. We left after this debacle and went to another restaurant where we were welcomed. Our bill for drinks and food came to over £160. I think the Ben Johnson lost out. I will never go there again.

My friend and I always look for a pub near to Bicester as it is equidistant from where we both lived and having been to the Trigger Pond and the Lion a number of times we were looking for somewhere different. We chose the Ben Jonson and we both liked it. I arrived a bit early and the main part of the pub was busy with all tables filled and although there is a TV above the fire, the volume was down and to be honest I didn't notice it until we left. (I have read a previous review complaining) I sat at a table ( we had booked) and the barman that served me was very chatty and welcoming, he explained about some menu changes, and advised of the specials. It is a limited menu, with 5 odd starters, 3 mains and 2 Specials and 5 deserts. To be honest I quite like that as it means that you are not struggling to make a choice. I had the Cajun chicken burger and my friend had the fish & chips. I really enjoyed my burger and the fish looked great was a good sized portion. We shared a desert, I liked the Ice cream ball coated in pistachio. Food was good, the service was good and we think we have now found a pub we will be returning to for our regular 8 weekly meet ups. No fuss food, reasonable prices, would recommend.

As we’re not from the area we also found the staff v pleasant and welcoming. Would recommend!

As a local villager it is great to see the Ben Johnson open again but sadly so far is not up to the standard it was . It has such great potential as far as location and decor is concerned but sadly I felt it lacked atmosphere . The lighting is bright in the bar area and the TV with sport giving the impression that it wants to attract sports fans rather than those that are looking for a nice cosy atmosphere for a quiet drink and a chat . The food this evening was certainly acceptable and the service was ok but there was certainly no warmth or friendliness . We have now been in a couple of times and have yet to see the manager smile so not great for first impressions or making you feel welcome .

Having visited several times since lockdown, I continue to be drawn back by the warm welcome and tangible sense of atmosphere at the Ben Jonson - whether summery garden vibes or cosy autumnal comforts: tricky to deliver whilst maintaining Covid safety measures. The staff at The Ben have this honed to a fine art, where you’ll find all the conviviality and service of the pre-Covid world, whilst effectively maintaining customer and staff safety. Following an extensive refurb, the Ben offers a calming, warm, modern Cotswold aesthetic setting in which to sample the seasonal menu. Dishes are often locally sourced, generous, and constructed with attention to detail. On my last visit the log burner and open fire were lit, where I sat with friends enjoying the cosiness of autumn with liqueur coffees in the wingback chair snug. I cannot recommend this pub highly enough: you’d be mad not to pay them a visit.

We visited for Sunday lunch, and I wish now I'd taken a photograph of our plates to give you a more immediate and accurate impression. I'd picked this establishment primarily for its location close to the A34 in order to break up a journey from the South Coast up to Derbyshire at the end of a week's holiday, safe in the knowledge that a good meal was assured based on the very favourable reviews on this site. Sadly I got it wrong...It's certainly a very attractive thatched property and nicely fitted out in a modern style, no doubt to appeal to all the trendy and affluent folks living in the environs of Oxford, but our main interest was in the food, having had an excellent Sunday lunch on our arrival on the Isle of Wight the week before. There was no reference to Sunday lunch on the menus we were given but on enquiry were advised they had lamb and pork. My wife would normally have chosen beef, which surprisingly they didn't have (it was 1.15, so I don't think they'd run out), so we settled for two lamb. This took ages to come, and when it did it looked dreadful. We were presented with a standard-sized plate deep with veg., with several very thin slices of (pre-sliced and reheated?) lamb on top and the whole drizzed with the darkest and strongest gravy imaginable (indeed beforehand I couldn't have imagined it!). It looked most unappetising but we were left to our own devices and because by the time it arrived we were hungry we pressed on.The meat needed the fat trimming off (as is often the case) but this was hard to do given that it wasn't lying flat on the plate but rather laid on top of soft vegetables with no room to spare alongside. Detailing the elements individually:- the roast potatoes had absorbed a lot of fat and were rather overdone, but to be fair that's exactly how I like them, so a good start;- the roast parsnips (if you like parsnips) were excellent;- the cabbage had great potential and it looked as though all the veins had been neatly removed, only for someone to then toss them all back in, the upshop being that there were a high proportion of loose stalks;- the pureed carrot and swede was a bit watery, but nearly right; - the fine beans were a bit overcooked but in any event ruined [for me] by being doused in the so-called gravy;- the gravy was hard to gather-up and taste in isolation and I wouldn't rule out it having a good quality base, but if so it was far too reduced for its own good and needed significant dilution.No-one could complain about the quantity and as mentioned some elements were good, but as I said to the lad who asked [belatedly] if we'd enjoyed out meal the fundamental problem in my view was the presentation. If it had been served as many pubs do with (say) just the meat and roast elements on one's own plate and the vegetables in a shared serving dish (together with a better and/or much diluted gravy) then we may well have had a different impression, but as it was it looked a mess. It was at this point of giving what I hoped was helpful feedback that I enquired as to the cost and was told £18. This was more than we'd anticipated and precisely double what our previous [admittedly cheap but better] Sunday lunch had cost us on the IoW, but as noted this is an affluent part of Oxfordshire. When the bill came however I was horrified to see that we'd been charged 12% or so on top for service, which not only added insult to injury but is something I've never previously come across for a pub lunch (so I asked for it to be taken off, which it was, even though the service itself was okay).Clearly I am out of synch with most other reviewers and I hesitated before marking it down the extra notch from Average to Poor, but that's my opinion relative to our experience and typically four or five star reviews of Sunday lunch elsewhere. It will be interesting for others to see if managment take any of these points on board and alter the pile-it-high manner of presentation, but given the [perceived] scowl from the women in charge when we left I somewhat doubt it!

Smarter-than-the-average pub food: on the adventurous side and well done. Smarter...etc...decor too. It does the village pub thing with elan and éclat. Young staff are delighted to do their thing: service was attentive and prompt. The beer was suitably beery, the piped music was probably enjoyed by those 30 years younger than me, and loads of folk were enjoying the garden. Have a peek in the village church while you're there. Be soon, I said...

Stopped off for lunch after reading the rave reviews. We sat outside in the beer garden, which has a small wooden play area. All very civilised. We were not disappointed. The burger with stilton and bacon, not cheap at £17, was very nice indeed. It was accompanied by pomme frites (proper tasty hand cut chips) not fries! The brownie dessert with a couple of strawberries and cream was very tasty. Will definitely return.

I have been here twice now. Once with two friends and once with my mother - both times for a drink and a bite to eat. We were consistently blown away by the entire experience. You can tell that a lot of time and thought has gone into every single detail, from decor, to the menu, to the freshness and quality of the food, polite staff and great vibe. You definitely get what you pay for and we will definitely be coming back here very soon.Thank you Kayleigh and team! X

Needed to find somewhere halfway between Northampton and Beaconsfield and thought we would try this pub. What a superb experience. The food was fantastic, great atmosphere and super friendly and helpful staff. Now just got to find another reason to drive the 40 mins to go there again.

I say this without any exaggeration, this is one of the loveliest pubs I’ve ever been too. From the ambience, decor, music, staff and food everything was just divine. The prawn linguine and beef burger were superb. Cherry on the cake was the back garden with its playground set - perfect to distract the kids while you enjoy your grapefruit & elderflower gin cocktail in pretty surroundings.

Myself, My Husband and our 13 year daughter visited here today, we actually dont live very far from the pub but had never visited, well shame on us because this place is absolutely AMAZING, from the welcome we received on arrival, impeccable service and absolutely outstanding food, I honestly can not recommend this place enough. Myself and daughter had the burger with chips and salad and my word it was five star, my Husband chose the chefs special of chicken supreme and said it was the best he had tasted (and hes not easily pleased) The decor is absolutely beautiful, lovely big garden and plenty of parking. So glad we discovered this place and will 100% make this our go to in the future:-)

First time at The Ben Jonson and what a fantastic pub. From the very start the staff were friendly, smiles all round. Hand sanitizer at the front door and very spacious so felt safe. We chose to sit inside (modern tasteful decor) but checked out the garden which was huge. Plenty of seating and cover if it was hot or wet. The food was high quality, well presented and plentiful. Great choice too. I have garlic allergies and the staff were very accommodating. We must have been there for a good couple of hours and had starters, mains, desserts, drinks and coffees, for 3 people at £85, we thought this was great value. Would definitely recommend and will be back.

Turned up after being turned away from a couple of places and found the most hospitable and accommodating staff we could have asked for. Gave the dogs treats, got us a table immediately and the kids were on the frame at the back in minutes. All COVID-19 measures were absolutely observed by the whole place. We had the roast pork and chicken burgers and the food was fantastic especially our epic roasts. I don’t know enough superlatives to give any more praise on the place. We were blown away! Well done guys!!

What a difference a year makes (we stop every year for lunch on the way to The New Forest). The new owners have really turned this place around. Great atmosphere, very welcoming, even for two excited Spaniels. Can highly recommend the salads and the real ale.

Another fabulous evening meal in the Lodge at the Muddy Duck. Lovely cheerful staff, prompt service and great food served hot as it should be. This is still the best pub for miles around and well worth a visit. The only negative is (still) the absence of a lovely welcoming fire. The room is begging for it.

We had a lovely meal last week, sitting outside. The food was superb, and the service was efficient and friendly. I can recommend the home made nachos. Probably the best I’ve ever had! And a good choice of vegetarian dishes too. The place has a lovely atmosphere whether you’re going for a meal or just to enjoy a drink.
