The Bellachroy Restaurant in Argyll & Bute

We arrived on a late ferry from Oban and drove through the dark on single lane roads to get to Dervaig. Lucky for us we had programmed the location in our GPS because signal on the island is spotty at best. We arrived exhausted and hungry and the staff at the Bellachroy took excellent care of us, even letting us use their landline to contact our BnB. The food was excellent, the ambiance was super friendly. Our waitress was the best, and we laughed so much with her and the customers in the next table.

We were staying at a bed and breakfast in Dervaig and hadn't booked anywhere for dinner. We went and asked for availability and luckily managed to secure a table for slightly later in the evening. The menu is not massive but has a varied choice to suit everyone's taste. We had the fish and chips and the venison burger accompanied by some thirst quenching Jarl ale. Then we had a real treat - the banoffee dessert which was incredible. The staff were really friendly and the atmosphere great, loved it!!

The fact that this was the oldest pub on Mull appealed to me. I arrived at about 6:30 on a Friday evening and it was clearly busy, the carpark was full but I found a space along the road. I was on my own, with my dog, and the back bar area was pretty packed when I got in but the guy behind the bar pointed out a seat and I soon got chatting with the group nearby. I ordered half of a Fyne ale and the Dervaig duo of venison from the specials board. It sounded so good I didn't even look at the main menu! The food arrived and was beautiful. The venison was perfectly cooked both ways, and the accompaniment was perfect, including the little green bean croquettes, and the jug of red currant and port reduction. And then I managed to find space for the sticky toffee pudding, too, which was also lovely. All in all a fantastic meal, I'm just sorry I didn't go until my last night on Mull! Plus the staff were lovely and there were some friendly locals as well as chatting with other people who were staying nearby.

I had the butternut squash roulade & salad. There were other vegetarian options on the menu, always great to have a choice. The food was presented beautifully & was tasty. The roulade was well constructed with a generous filling. The salad had goats cheese in just the right quantity to keep in healthy & tasty. Really enjoyed the meal.

Stunning location with a 'middle of nowhere feel' yet being relatively close to Tobermory. The staff is very friendly and helpful and the food really good. Culinairy high standard and very tasty. We've eaten here a couple of evenings in a row and each evening the menu (choice of 3 starters, about 8 mains, 1 or 2 special mains and 3 desserts) slightly changed. So there would be something new to choose every evening. Really loved it each and every time.

Wow- we cannot fault our dining experience at the Bellachroy Hotel. Very friendly, welcoming staff, a beautiful hotel in a stunning setting, with amazing food 😎 Will definitely be returning here next year 💯

We were welcomed at 7:45 pm! Which was such a relief, earlier in the day we had experienced a flat tyre, waited 3 hours to have it repaired, missed our ferry to Mull, drove a 2 hour detour to a different ferry and drove on single track road to finally arrive at our cottage (near Dervaig). We had planned to pick up a dinner in Oban to prepare ourselves but changes out of our control didn’t allow for that. The kitchen prepared us a wonderful meal which we devoured, we were so grateful! The staff were helpful & friendly. After our meal we asked to purchase some milk for our morning coffee and we were gifted some!! A memorable experience.

Fantastic burger and chips had in the restaurant! Lovely spot to sit outside prior to the meal with a couple pints as well to settle in for the weekend. Very friendly staff and the music in the bar was great as well. Cant wait to come back!

Lovely evening meal here, great food and good customer service. Had 3 courses, lovely scallops to start, chicken for main and sticky toffee pudding to finish. Would recommend!

A very friendly pub/restaurant with a great selection of food and drinks available most evenings. The menu included many gluten free options including gluten free fish and chips which was great for me. My husband enjoyed the mussels which were served with cider and pancetta.

We'd visited the Ballachroy last year whilst passing through Dervaig, and had loved the food, the ales, and the ambience. Lovely landlord at that time, and excellent customer service. So we actually chose to stay in Dervaig this year - only to find that the pub had changed hands, and not for the better! The choice of meals for dinner was limited, and not particularly exciting, but we chose the haddock & chips, and a vegetarian pasta dish. The batter on the fish was so hard my partner could barely get his knife through it, and the pasta dish was the most flavourless vegetarian meal I've ever been served in my life! We also ordered some drinks, but the ales were so chilled, they were not at all enjoyable (way too cold for a real ale). Staff didn't seem to understand the problem when we mentioned it to them! This was going to be our "local" for our week's holiday, but we never went back after that first night, and ended up driving to Tobermory instead - such a disappointment.

Ordered the mussels because...island, fresh, Scotland. Yeah, 100% delicious. Cooked with pancetta and leeks, served with chips. Washed down with a pint. Perfect dinner.

This was very close to the cottage we were renting. We had a drink here a few days earlier and after seeing th menu decided to book a table. The meal was excellent and very good value. Would recommend a meal here if you are in the area.

Good beer and pleasant staff did little to make up for awful food. We ate in the bar area as we had a dog with us. Out of 4, only 1 enjoyed their meal. The pork and chorizo burger was the worst burger I have ever had. It certainly wasn't worth the long drive to get there.

What a find! We were looking for a hotel on Mull to stay and explore the Island and discovered the The Bellachory in the right place. We had the best holiday we can remember , our room was lovely, the food excellent. Hannah & Tom could not have made us more welcome, we felt part of the community from the first day . If you want a holiday in a beautiful & peaceful setting with perfect hosts look no further , you have found it.

Great inn and restaurant! We stayed two nights while traveling Isle of Mull. Hannah and Tom were great hosts, dinner and breakfast were delicious! They even made us bacon and egg sandwiches when we had to leave early to catch the ferry! We had a very enjoyable stay here, highly recommend!

The food and service is excellent. I particularly liked the Risotto dish and Falafel burger. The puddings are lovely too.

The Bellachroy is a fantastic place to eat and drink. The restaurant offers great food and a good range of options for vegetarians, the spaghetti alla romana balls are delicious! You can expect a warm welcome in the locals bar, if you fancy a few drinks. They have a weekly pub quiz and it’s a great place to meet people and chat about all things Mull! Highly recommend.

Stayed here for 3 nights in September, hotel and bar are dog friendly, our room was well decorated and spotless. The beds were very comfortable and the breakfast was very good. The bar staff and owners were friendly and gave advise on the local area. We ate our evening meal on two nights and it was very tasty.

We went twice for food in the restaurant during our weeks stay on Mull. We really enjoyed both meals. The owners and staff are all very nice and efficient. It was a pleasure to eat and drink there. Highly recommended!

The Bellachroy is our local when we stay here in Dervaig and we’ve seen it change hands many times over the years. Pleased to say, the current owners have a really good thing going. The bear pit is a really cosy spot for a few pints after a day of exploring and their take away menu is spot on - a limited menu but all very tasty and excellent value for money. Last night we ordered the fish and chips, as well as the macaroni cheese with garlic bread - under £25 for both and huge portions! Couldn’t recommend enough as a drinking spot and as a local take away - something which is very limited on the island!

Really lovely put in the centre of the village. Great to drop in for a pint after a full day wildlife watching. Our meal was excellent, tasty, speedy service and good value

We went expecting good pub food. The prices are normal pub food prices. But everything we ate was fantastic - especailly the burger and chips. And the deserts. Just everything really, would thoroughly recommend

What started off to be a promising meal soon turned sour. Starters were lovely, I had the prawn marie rose and my partner had the chicken liver pate. However for main course I ordered the battered haddock and my partner ordered the Thai red curry. The batter on the haddock was rock hard and the chicken in the curry had poor cuts of chicken and few of them at that. We did not finish our main courses. I declined dessert but my partner was still hungry and opted for the mango cheesecake which he said was okay. Good selection of wine. Being locals to the area we will not be rushing back.

Had a good meal here, burger was nice and just the ticket. Staff were friendly on a cold evening and managed to squeeze us in. Free wifi was useful as not much signal in the area.

Lovely welcoming staff who did their absolutely best to accommodate our every need - and to top it off, the best pie I’ve ever had (venison with black pudding) all at a reasonable price. I had the broccoli soup to start as well and it was delicious. If you’re passing by, definitely stop off!

This was a dinner of different quality:The hits: The smoked mackerel cheesecake was a genius and well put together starter. Oat cake base with a gentle pate but flavoursome and just stunningThe deserts we had were brilliant - the chocolate with ginger was smooth with a little heat and very well put together and the mango cheesecake was clean and fresh. Really well put togetherThe miss: the main course we had was disappointing - both chose the beef pie with local beef. It was served like a stew with a bit of puff pastry on top. The beef wasn’t tender and a bit fatty - very poor. Skimpy on the veg - after the starter this was a massive let down

We enjoyed a delicious dinner at the Bellachroy! The staff were really friendly and the service was fast, the wine and beer cold and the food outstanding! We had the veggie burger (v. good!), the beef burger (the home made chips with both were delicious) and a sticky toffee pudding each for dessert (definitely a must have). We will defintiely be visiting again when we return to Mull!

We decided to waterside but we're I formed because of civic we would be served in take away cartons ..when the guidance it was in small brown recyclable s , on opening the good was well presented and all home cookec. We all opted for the ballache burger which was delicious.. Highly recommend visiting

I was on Mull last week for work and on two occassions ordered take away dinners for my team. The staff at the Bellachroy were extremely helpful and altered times for collection and added meals last minute for me. Great accomodating service, Thank you so much we loved the hot food after busy, rainy. long working days.

We called ahead to book a table to be advised it was first come first served and no reservations were being taken.We drove there and went inside, where only one table in the whole place was occupied. We asked for a table for 3 to be told rather rudely that there wasn’t one. I must have looked confused as the lady told me we could sit outside and come back in to order. We found a menu on the wall which was very limited and nothing like the website so we voted with our feet Im afraid.

We went here for dinner all 4 meals were lovely my lobster was exceptionally tasty the desserts were fabulous, we will definitely be back if we return to Mull the staffs were really professional while still being really welcoming and friendly

The setting is lovely and the staff are doing their best to welcome, but steer clear of the food! It's microwave heated and bland, would recommend finding elsewhere to eat. Sparkling water is also flat. Such a shame!

The food was excellent, we went for two early evening meals and the service was first class! We sat outside and enjoyed the view and had two really great meals.

I found Bellachory a lovely friendly place with excellent service and the rooms are very well equipped. The area is also amazing. It is well worth staying.

We have recently enjoyed two delicious evening take-away meals from the Bellachroy - such a great solution to continue to provide meals despite the current restrictions. Very tasty and generous portions and well priced too. Thoroughly recommended.

We normally have a Sunday lunch in the Bellachroy when we visit and this year was no exception. My husband is a coeliac and has a very sensitive response to gluten (a breadcrumb can send his temperature rocketing to the point of hospitalisation) so eating out can be a nightmare. No problem here, the gravy is gluten free, there was a gluten free pudding option, they have gluten free beer and they have a special gluten free fryer.This is one (if not the) best place to eat on Mull and whether you have a coeliac in your party or not I can’t recommend the food & service high enough. As always I would recommend when booking you notify them of allergens but you really can’t go wrong with the Bellachroy. Our picture is of our empty plates and gluten free beer glasses - I think that says it all!

Lovely inn situated in Dervaig, staff were really helpful and polite and provided excellent service, would definitely return and recommend to anyone whether it be couples or a family. The food in the restaurant was really nice and all made fresh, can’t fault it at all. Hope to be back!

A Friend took us out for a Thank You meal to this Isle's Oldest Dinery. I chose the Macaroni & Cheese which was very nice indeed. For dessert I had Chocolate-Orange Posset which was absolutely gorgeous & recommend anybody to try it.

We have visited mull a number of time but never made to The Bellachroy, we are glad we did this time. The service was excellent and the food was delicious. The children’s portions were perfect and my daughter was delighted to offered more than the usual fried something with chips. Desserts were amazing... lemon posset was amazing. Stayed in cottage nearby in June and ate at the Inn about 4 nights as it was excellent food. Nice staff too and nice friendly service. Will definitely visit again if on Mull again.

My husband and I stayed here for two nights while visiting mull. All staff were very friendly and accommodating. Restaurant seemed to always be busy so you definitely need to book a table! Food was very tasty and the seafood was very fresh, coming from just a mile up the road! You had to preorder breakfast which I thought was great as it was fresh and just what you asked for. Would definitely recommend!

we arrived to an empty dining room, no reservation, and were told here were no tables but could eat in the bar. 4 staff behind the bar in the empty dining room and 1 in the busy bar. eventually got served after waiting an age while the 4 in the dining room stood and chatted while the person in the bar was rushed off his feet.disappointed with the lack of local and sea food on a very standard menu.ee chise haddock and a burger. the fish was nice, as was the burger, however the chips were few and far between, and being the cheapest thing on the plate, felt cheated . average 13 pounds feel that it is overpriced.upon leaving, the dining was still almost empty.

La nourriture était très bonne et copieuse, quoique le service ait été un peu lent (C'est peut-être normal, car il ne faut pas être pressé sur Mull). L'ambiance est chaleureuse, le restaurant étant dans un bâtiment historique dans un petit village avec un beau cachet. Il est toutefois un peu ardu de revenir à son hébergement si on ne demeure pas sur place, en empruntant à la noirceur les petites routes (single track) étroites et sinueuses.

What an amazing find this restaurant is. Tucked away in Dervaig is the tastiest, freshest food you can imagine. Booking is essential ir you will sadly not get the chance to experience Cullen Skink and fresh fish at it's best. Staff are friendly, food is incredible, prices are good. What more could you ask for?

It's always good to be at the start of someone's journey and to see how they progress. Eighteen months ago Tom and Hannah found themselves at the helm of the Bellachroy Hotel, the oldest inn on Mull, despite never having pulled a pint before in their lives. They were just weeks in for our first visit and it wasn't quite a case of looking at the fear in their eyes, but they were learning on the hoof as the previous landlord didn't allow them a joint settling in period.

Great pint of Jarl from Fyne brewery. Excellent lamb main and mackerel starter. Went to thursday night quiz which was fun.

We stopped off to have lunch in the dog friendly bar area. Our hostess was very friendly and helped us to pick something suitable for our vegetarian diets. Fresh water was provided for our pup too! I opted for the macaroni cheese which was perfectly done and very comforting. A shame it was our last night on the island, or we would have been back for quiz night!

So delighted we chose to support local and eat local last night. The restaurant was full so you definitely need to book! For starters we had the scallops which were delicious and cooked to perfection. I had the lobster for mains and my husband had the beef stew. The beef just melted in your mouth and was rich and well seasoned. The lobster fresh, tasty and also cooked perfectly. It’s not often I can manage a dessert but had to try the brownie. Homemade soft and very chocolate, great with the ice cream. My husband had the Eton Mess which again you could see was homemade. So pleased for the new owners keeping this Inn alive. You must try it.

The Bellachroy strikes the perfect balance between welcoming tourists and feeling like an authentic local pub. The food was delicious and felt very much home made - with portion sizes to help you cope with the occasionally challenging local weather! The bar staff are friendly and service was quick.

It is a great place to enjoy food. We stayed at the hotel and ate in for two dinners: excellent Cullen skink, the scallops on black pudding were superb, the Eton mess with berries (meringue with whipped cream and raspberries) simply divine!

Visited here for the second time this year and had yet another fantastic meal. In fact it was so good we went for 2 nights in a row. After a disappointing visit to another seafood establishment I was delighted to find they had lobster on the specials menu. Fantastic food and a wonderful warm welcome. Was nice to be able to eat more than just bar food while we had the dogs with us. Will most definitely be back if we return to Mull

I had half a lobster which was cooked to perfection, cheese board and a very tasty lemon dessert. Would come again!

I don’t write many reviews as I find most places quite ordinary but this was spectacular. My wife and I eat here whilst we were on a visit to the far side of Mull. Absolutely delicious. Main course was lobster which we were told was caught locally which I have no reason to doubt. It was cheaper than a lobster I had 30 years ago and was a real treat. Other delights were the starter and the service. The starter was scallops and black pudding which was the best course I have had for many years. I even sought out Ian the chef to ask for the recipe which he seemed glad to share with me. I shall try to recreate that back home. Another mention has to go to the manager who could not be more friendly or helpful. I think he was called Tim, maybe Tom but you may recognise him as he seemed to have a Manchester area dialect. Only pity is that this place is such a long way from home.

Et oh surprise 1/2 homard à 20 euros . On croirait rêver. Retour le lendemain après réservation par nos soins. Le menu était plus classique du fish and chips au mouton . Bon dessert simple .

Having booked well in advance we had a table for 2 squeezed next to the radiator. It was so hot I had to move my seat round the table to stop me scalding my arm. We asked to move, and there were empty tables, but the manager refused and said he'd turn the heating off. It hadn't cooled much by the time my meal arrived and I had to go outside to cool down. I couldn't finish my meal. Neither waitress nor manager showed any sympathy and when I asked for the bill got the impression I was just an annoyance to them. A Saturday evening ruined! We were out in the street in 45 mins.

The food was good .I had halibut it was very tasty my partner had chicken which was well cooked . It was very busy and they were turning people away from the restaurant. The staff were really nice very friendly. All in all in was a nice meal .the only negative points the portions are quite small but I would recommend the restaurant .

Friendly staff await you when you visit this restaurant. Funny to boot. A proper Mull welcome...

This is a review of 2 halves, as for the food alone, it would have been 5*. The pub clearly has a great chef and we really loved what we ate.

We have eaten at the Bellachroy Hotel 4 or 5 times now over the last 2 years and have really enjoyed the food and atmosphere every time. The service is very good and the hotel is really nice. We will call in again on our next visit to Dervaig!.

They were very friendly here and good but not special food to get that fifth star.. They have a restaurant which is effectively the lounge bar; that needs booking much of the year. They serve the same food in the regular bar or outside without booking. We ate outside there a couple of evenings as it was walking distance to our B&B.; Lamb shanks and lobster were probably the best we had, perfectly good venison stew and fish and chips.

Had very good fish and chips and a decent welcome. Had to book as others have said, only small dining area, so books up. Only disappointment was that we had amazing seafood/shellfish here on our last visit (2013). Hoped for similar this time, but nothing similar in menu now.

Great food in this restaurant, where you definitely have to book in advance.........always a good sign. Everything we chose during our two night stay here was well-prepared and presented. The supreme of chicken dish was to-die-for!

Well done to Hannah, Tom and staff this lovely village hotel is back to being a great place to eat, drink and sleep. We ate here on both the nights that we were staying here recently and thoroughly enjoyed the food. A limited menu but everything homemade and delicious exactly what it should be like. Keep up the good work.

We all enjoyed a great meal here one evening. The bar was quite busy, but we felt very welcome 💁🏼😊 The restaurant staff were very friendly and suggested dishes. Smoked trout starter was excellent.

We stayed at the Bellachroy Hotel and the in house restaurant was absolutely outstanding. The food was delicious. Over the course of our stay we tried the fish and chips, gnocchi, and the specials lamb curry. All were fantastic value for money but more importantly delicious. The staff were extremely attentive, friendly and helpful. We looked forward to coming back from a day exploring to a place we knew would provide us with a perfect balance of atmosphere and good food. The bar area in the next room makes for a perfect place for a relaxing drink post meal with a mix of friendly people.

The oldest inn on the island with a charming pub. I had the haddock and it was cooked perfectly. The Cranachan dessert was to die for! Staff were delightful and the atmosphere was cozy.

Steak pie and chips - no side of salad or any other veg served with this £15 menu special. Pie was slightly overcooked and a bit dry with a simple pastry lid which had been cooked separately and was a bit singed. It could have been lovely with a bit more care. Sorry but won't be back

Wir waren im letzten Jahr schon zum Essen hier und es war phantastisch... wir haben uns sehr gefreut auch in diesem Urlaub wieder exzellent dort zu essen... heute war es dann endlich soweit und wir können garnicht verstehen was passiert ist? Ein anderer Koch? Das Essen war schlechter als in jeder Fish und Chips Bude ever... Absolut nicht zum empfehlen,wir haben lange nicht mehr so schlecht gegessen...

Being the only pub in Dervaig, we had hopes that the Bellachroy would be a nice place to eat and drink within walking distance of our rental cottage, but we were disappointed. It's quaint, but the food was ho-hum. I had the mushroom risotto and my husband had the fish cakes…both quite tasteless. My risotto was served in a large bowl—no greens, no sides, no bread—so it was basically a huge pile of mushroom and green onion-flavored porridge-like stuff. At the prices, we were unwilling to give it a second chance. The ale was good.

Staying elsewhere locally so popped in early for some dinner. Place was empty but because we didn't have a reservation there was quite a fuss made over this despite only one other couple in the restaurant! We only popped in for a meal, and despite being very crowded in the restaurant, they were very accommodating, the food was lovely too, we chose the beef bourginon and it was delicious.

Came here for lunch. The menu is small but tasty. Beer is crystal clear and well looked after Fyne brewery. They look after us and our 2 year old lovely.
