The Bell Hanger in Monmouthshire

No front of house. Appalling table service, took 4 staff to serve a table of 2. Had to ask for table to be cleared. No bacon on bbq chicken melt. Steak VERY overcooked. Food came before drinks even though drinks ordered 15 mins before food. Ignorant and rude staff, in particular one member. AVOID AT ALL COSTS. Disaster as far as restaurants are concerned. I would recommend the Indian restaurant around the corner.

How difficult is it to cook and take food 10 yards without it getting cold VERY if you go to the bell hanger!!!! somebody really needs to shake Wetherspoons up.

A very decent spoons in my opinion good food nice breakfast and fast service but it was a bit quiet for a Friday I think

Had a lovely meal,but unfortunately it was spoilt as the air smelt of urine ,this was down to a man who obviously had problems. I felt sorry for him but everyone in the restaurant wasn't happy because of the smell.

Called in here for a lunch, what a mistake. Ordered a burger which has to be the worst burger I've had to try and eat, which I didn't. The chips were just frozen, heated and tasteless. Walk down to the castle and water front, there are a number of pubs serving food.

Visited on way to Bristol. Selected two 11 inch spicy meat feast pizzas. They arrived very quickly & were delicious. Loaded with toppings. Best we have had at a spoons & we have had these pizzas at many locations. Only let down was the dirty table outside which did not appear to have been cleaned for ages.

As part of a weekend break with fiancee we decided to take breakfast at this witherspoon. It was unexpectedly poor, with 3 breakfast items not available, some items were cold and the sausages were the worst taste I have ever experienced, as if deep fried in old burnt oil. My complaint to staff was met with what is a seemingly now acceptable response of 'sorry about that sir. Well thats ok then!

Large building plenty of space good social distancing...no complaints food and drinks were great. Staff was friendly and helpful!!

I have visited this Wetherspoon establishment once or twice, mainly because it is a convenient place to stop on a journey home from Wales to Somerset, and also very near the old Severn crossing. My welcome was pleasant, better than the average in the chain. There was a good range of beers, including some from Wales. My Sausage and Mash (from the Welsh menu) was very tasty, and the beer (Rugby-themed) was well kept. A further visit is called for, as there are lots of places in that part of the borders worth visiting.

As most Wetherspoon pubs it is what you see and what you get, excellent cheap ale & cheap food Tim Martin what ever people might think of him my god he’s got it right COME ON ALL YOU BIG BREWERY CHAINS START COMPETING!!!!!

We took menu to counter where two staff members ignored us whilst one wiped the floor with a mop. No acknowledgement of our presence was made at all for the while that we stood at counter, but I heard everything including " I have peed myself" . Even if this was what she was mopping off the floor I did not want either of them serving food to us, if one ever got round to taking our order, so we left and ate in a cafe up the road.Does Wetherspoons give any customer service training to its staff?

Regular visitor to Wetherspoons in Chepstow.. had experiences before but none like my last. Ordered food off the app, drinks came first from a polite staff member, the food then came. My plate was dumped in front of me... my friends plate was dropped in front of them, with enough force for some of the food to leave the plate and the cutlery was dropped into the middle of the table. No thank you, no enjoy your meal, she just walked off. All of the other staff were cheery and polite, but this girl I think called Amy, or certainly began with A was incredibly miserable that let the entire team down.

Went to Wetherspoons for lunch before my train and ordered a large mix grill and a pint of fosters when my food arrived some of it looked ok and the rest when I started to eat the meat it was like road kill as if someone went out on the road picked it up and stuck it on the grill then served it.. let’s just say I won’t be eating meat again at this place..

We popped in for lunch but the place was so busy we ended up having drinks only.Service seemed a bit on the slow side due to lack of staff at the bar....Wetherspoons can be a victim of their own success.Quite nice with a large outside area and a 2 minutes walk to the beautiful castle area.Visited 18th January 2020.

Dropped in after a walk around Chepstow. Very good choice of dishes of good quality available at very reasonable prices.

A Wetherpoons is a Wetherspoons so, if you don't mind queueing at a bar to place your food order, the food will come quickly and match the menu description. I must admit I could not fault my Welsh Cawl for £4.95 and made the most of my bottomless coffee. You would be hard pushed to get similar value for money anywhere and have change from £7.

I had chicken and spare ribs, chicken was like rubber and I could not eat it. It was dry, hard and tough to eat

Just the perfect pub, got served by Tommy such a friendly and helpful staff member. Ordered corn and the cob and it was cooked perfectly, I will be coming back

Incredibly rude staff member, looked like kitchen staff with glasses and bright red rosy cheeks.. didn’t seem to want to be there let alone give any service. All other staff were helpful and polite but this young chap is most definitely in the wrong industry as his attitude towards us was disgusting and if I see him in there again I will not be using this Wetherspoons.

Firstly, I ordered via the app. Food came and drinks were nowhere to be seen, to be told a 30 min wait on drinks. Drinks arrived. I order a pint of coke and a pint of cranberry, both came, the glasses so full of ice, we asked for ice to be removed and drinks were returned half full due to the ice allowing such a saving on thier juice! If I wanted a half or quarter pint of either, I'd have ordered that. On this 'one occasion' when the team leader came to speak to us about this, they filled the glass. The app states nowhere that the glasses come.filled with ice via the app as this team leader stated. The team leader had no people skills as he just wanted to put his point across, not listen and talk over me repeatedly. One of the burgers arrived with, I kid you not, about 7 chips.

Nice big pub with plenty of tables and quite nicely decorated too, in the middle of town and next door to a reasonably priced car park.

Nice staff, good food, car park is very close. We often go to this restaurant, like it very much, highly recommended.

Yet again very disappointed in the food. We went with friends on Sunday there was 4 of us not all meals came out at once. Our meals was cold and eventually when the others came these was cold also. These was sent back to be reheated and no offer of a fresh meal. When it came back it was warm not hot.This seems to happen a lot of the time when we go in the food is Always cold and many others find this. But for some reason they don't complain

Called in on Saturday for breakfast.... they were busy as they had the rugby on..... our breakfast was ok although a little under cooked and they forgot the extra plate and then the extra fork which we never did receive! The poor table next to us their eggs were almost raw and when they asked for new ones were brought out ones with beans on..., it looked like a left over egg! The complained and were refunded .,,, have had plenty of day time and eve meals here tho with no problems! You get what u pay for!!

I absolutely love coming into weatherspoons in Chepstow such an amazing environment and food the only disappointing thing is a blond waitress and bar staff who was unbelievably rude and disrespectful compared to everyone else.

This strikes me as an above average Wetherspoon branch. The food was ordered using the App and the hot drinks beakers were brought straight away. The pizza and all day brunch were delivered in pretty quick time by a polite and friendly waitress.

What a great place. Big spacious bar with plenty of atmosphere. Mix of ages and lots of interaction.

Yet another visit and although a very busy day at Wetherspoons, the meals and service was good with pleasant staff. There was a selection of low alcohol beers as the manager promised and I enjoyed the Adnams Ghost ship which is 0.5%.This is ideal as I was driving but can have more than one 'beer'. We all always have the Abbots as the 1st beer anyway which is always a good pint. Busy but not left hanging around for the meals and my rump steak was as ordered.

Been going to the bell hanger for a few years and it was a good, cheap place to eat out, but recently it's going down hill. Food cold, Tables dirty ( not busy very quite when we popped in ) staff are really friendly.

Brilliant place for breakfast . We ordered our food from the Wetherspoons app and were impressed to have our drinks quickly delivered. It’s a standard Wetherspoons choice but the food came out quickly and was cooked really well. There is a good range of options from vegan to veggie and gluten free. It’s nice to see a good range of alcohol free and sugar free drinks too.

Called in here while staying in Chepstow. Usual spoons , great curry and a cold pint. Lovely outdoor spaces

My family visited this Wetherspoons for an evening meal. We were staying in Chepstow for the night and because our local Wetherspoons The Belle and Lion is so good we thought we would be safe to eat at the Chepstow one.

Visited the bell hanger Chepstow. Chepstow castle are having bands there most weekends through August. However it seems that somebody has not informed the management of the bellhanger. Whereby only 5 staff were on duty serving. The first pint I waited 12 minutes and the second pint I waited for 15 minutes. I complained to a female bar staff who was very rude and aggressive. No wonder witherspoons are struggling.

We eat here during our visit to Chepstow a big mistake the quality of the full English breakfast was a big let down just poor quality, low standard bacon, sausage under cooked eggs, the worst one I have had anywhere in the UK, The tea was terrible come on Weatherspoons we are a tea nation never to be great again if this the standard we serve up, whilst we where there other unsatisfied cliants sent their breakfast back. Yes definitely one to take off our list

We went to Chepstow and stopped at The Bell Hanger for lunch. Food was delivered quickly by friendly staff and food was great. We often go to Wetherspoons and most are great quality, and so is this one.Definitely would come again if we ever did come to Chepstow again.

Only £10 for a breakfast for 2 with coffee. Decent pancakes with bacon, and coffee refills make this somewhere to go back to.

We were in Chepstow for the day just browsing the town, when we decided to have lunch at The Bell Hanger (we usually go for Wetherspoons wherever we are). There were four of us. My friend had the sirloin steak, one of my sisters had the 12 oz rump steak, and my other sister and I had the chicken melt. It was all very good, and the chips were just right, in fact the best we've had in a long time. The chicken was tender, the steaks medium. This pub is huge - it goes from front to back straight through to the other street. Toilets were OK but are a walk away and on a lower level if you're at the "wrong" end of the pub. One point, the carpets everywhere are very "trodden in" with years of feet marching on them - could do with a deep clean or replacing. Otherwise we had a great lunch thanks to lovely food plus attentive and efficient staff.

I often going in with a young lady with Diwn Syndrome. Staff are very nice and always helpful...food not expensive and setting is nice

On a wet day I called in for lunch. It's a big pub, albeit with low ceilings, bit it is nicely decorated and centrally located. I opted for an all day breakfast, which was quickly prepared and tasted good.

We had a late lunch at The Bell Hanger as we had only a short time to eat before an event and know Wetherspoons normally serve fairly quickly and food is reasonable. Ended up wishing we had done to the chip shop. Staff were really friendly and efficient however the food was poor. My partner had the smallest overcooked fish with half decent chips. My hummus and roasted veg wrap hardly contained any hummus and the veg was very greasy. It was also filled out with a lot of lettuce. Perhaps the pub was so busy attention to detail and quality went out of the window.

Popped in here for a drink this week, friendly staff, huge place with plenty of seating and a well decked out beer garden. Usual great selection of drinks all at cheap prices. Another good Wetherspoons pub.

I have visited this place with friends on average four times a year over the last five years or so. It never fails to please. This Sunday I had an 8-oz sirloin steak with two eggs and chips and with a beer for a very reasonable price as always. The steak was cooked to my satisfaction and the service was fast. Although low alcohol beer (Adnams Ghost Ship) was on the drinks list it was not stocked which is a shame as that one tastes like the real beer and is ideal for the driver who wants a beer with his/her meal. Overall this is well worth a visit as indeed we will be doing in another couple of weeks.

Always busy, need to review how you get served at bar as people tend to jump in and get served first. This happens quite often.

This pub is in a great location. It, like many Weatherspoons is clean and tidy with a good spectrum of cliental.

I am a regular customer at the Bell Hanger. Staff are lovely and mostly it is good value for money. Is it me or does this look small for scrambled eggs. The menu says 3 eggs and I'm not convinced....?

A busy afternoon as everyone seemed to have the same idea and call here before racing and the Madness concert. Staff coping as well as they could and serving cold beer and reasonable food. Steak a bit tough and grissle but fair prices.

We found this while exploring Chepstow one evening while my husband was visiting the area on the work trip. The food was great, came quickly, despite it being busy. We enjoyed that they serve Welsh based dishes, as it gave us the chance to try some local foods. The staff was courteous and efficient.

This is a good Wetherspoons pub. It is always packed but you can usually find a table. The food is quick and of reasonable quality so ideal for a quick bite. Drinks are very reasonably priced especially if you want shorts and mixers as doubles are only a £1 more. There is plenty of bar space and you get served fairly quickly. It always has a nice atmosphere.

I have had a break from the Bell Hanger for just over 6 months, as I had a big operation last year, and have started to get back into a routine as part of my recovery.

During a visit to this establishment, my friend and i were challenged by a member of staff because we appeared under the age of 16. When I was unable to produce ID to prove that i was in fact 16 we were asked to leave. I fully understand why there are policies put in place to ensure the safety of customers however, my friend and I had previously eaten a number of times without the need to provided. Furthermore, the need to be over the age of 16 to be served is not applicable in a number of other chain restaurants so why is it here?

Travelling with friends, we visited this establishment to get a quick lunch. The restaurant was clean, staff pleasant and our food arrived quickly. As it happens, we ate in another Wetherspoons restaurant the day before and in comparison to that one, here we received much bigger portions. Overall, a great experience!

I’m a regular visitor of this establishment as I have a lot of free lessons during my school day. On this particular visit, the “manager” who has seen me eat here many times before asked me for ID. I’m clearly over 16 years of age and as I don’t carry my passport round with me I didn’t have any. They then told us to leave even though we weren’t causing a disturbance and the lady who asked us for ID was in fact very rude and degrading towards me and my friends. We understand rules are rules and we weren’t trying to order any alcoholic drink so the problem wasn’t even a problem. We then followed the rules she set out for us and got a family member to drop down one of the parties passport, she then changed what she had said and explained to us that we all needed passports, essentially contradicting herself. After about an hour of waiting, we then got the said family member to come in and order for us, bearing in mind we interrupted her work day. I’m absolutely disgusted with the customer service at this branch and I wish to have a better experience on my next visit which would involve no rude staff members and someone who is willing to help their customers instead of penalising them, many thanks.

We are not big Wetherspoons fans, but not too much choice in Chepstow. Overall the pub is quite pleasant, the food was acceptable. Glyn the barman spoit our visit... I'm sure he is of an acceptable standard as a barman... He would benefit from some customer care lessons... He was very impatient and rude (and made it obvious to other customers) while my wife was having a problem with the payment machine. A very rude man. If I had a pub he would not be working for me...

My partner and I both had mixed grill. This included a free drink. My glass of rose was lovely. Very tasty main, superb value for money. The Duty Manager Glen was very friendly and polite, working hard, doing a great job, ensuring we had a nice afternoon.

Just had an absolutely rubbish family meal at the bell hanger in Chepstow. Five deep at bar to get served and 2 bar staff working at 6 at night..tables left uncleared and no time for courtesy how is your meal. ( microwaved solid nan bread and poppadoms ). Staff in there working very hard but profits over staffing is a big failing.

When you order a vegan breakfast you do not expect it to come out with an Egg! Sent back. Manager collected my plate and was very nice and spotted the immediate issue when I asked him what was wrong with the picture on my plate! Breakfast came back minus egg. Good. But also minus the side portion of avocado that was originally ordered so I had to ask for this too. So a double wrong order really. A little more care and attention Weatherspoon’s. Please do not serve Vegans Eggs with their breakfasts! Like real basic stuff in the kitchen department! Thank you.

This is a very big and very busy Weatherspoons on a Saturday night. It was very noisy with lots of singing but Wales has just won the rugby so to be expected and the atmosphere was friendly

I regularly visit the bell hanger for food, on this occasion I had a disappointing meal. The food was cold & the garlic bread was lacking cheese. However apon complaining to Duty manager Anne Marie the situation was quickly & efficiently dealt with she went above and beyond my expectations to resolve the problems. The resulting meal was fabulous & I will be returning.

We popped into The Bell Hanger for lunch today. Although there were a number of empty tables, we failed to find one with the dishes and cutlery from a previous customer cleared away. My husband's pizza was okay. My chicken burger was the was the worst I've tasted in a Wetherspoons. The chicken breast was lukewarm, dried out and the outside so tough and difficult to cut through with an ordinary knife. The lettuce in the burger looked like it had been hanging around for days. If there had been a waiter or waitress around we would have complained, but we didn't see one for the whole time we were eating our meal. The dirty dishes from the previous customer were still on our table when we left.

Called at The Bell Hanger for a meal today , From taking our order to serving our meals the staff were friendly and welcoming , the food was well cooked and nicely presented , Thanking you all for a pleasant time .

The food here is inexpensive but nothing special.Average pub grub.Good service and a relaxed atmosphere.The Bellhanger is a popular pub here in Chepstow.It seems to always be busy at all times of the day.The menu is varied and affordable as are the drinks.Its a big spacious pub with nice decor and a central location.Not far from Chepstow castle.

WELL what can I say it was horrendous to try and get to the bar 4 Staff Working, food was Okay ish nothing to write home about. Beer was best part.

My wife and I had walked into Chepstow and ran into this place while antique shopping. We didn't at first realize it was a chain.

Met a friend in Chepstow and we were looking for a spot of lunch. Looked inviting and realised too late that this pub is one of the "Weatherspoons". Lamb stew was half decent although a bit luke warm and a bit of a mean portion size. The place was also pretty busy and waiters were not keeping up with clearing vacated tables and the place was a bit filthy. But the thing that REALLY hacked me off the most was the pro-Brexit propaganda that had been distributed on every table. We tore ours up. I'm sorry but I don't want to be force-fed the chain-owner's ideology when I come for lunch, so on that basis I sure won't be coming again.

no taste to the turkey,mashed potato had a crust on it where it was kept warm in the oven.the carrots and parsnips were over cooked (roasted) and only two of each,the pigs in blankets the same over cooked, and half the plate was peas,hardly any gravy at all.What a waste of money !!

Visited the Bell Hanger Chepstow today and ordered a Prawn and Avocado Wrap with chips from the Christmas Menu. After about five minutes from ordering an Assistant Manager came to say they had run out of the Wraps and could I choose something else. I asked why I was not told the item was out of stock when I ordered and paid for the order - he could not give a reason! I ordered the Brie and Cranberry Panini instead. When our meal arrived I couldn’t believe the filling - where’s the Brie???? Come on Wetherspoons sort yourselves out with the run up to Christmas - don’t advertise food on your Christmas Menu if you can’t fulfill the order.

I'm here about twice a week and I'd say the chance of your dinner being cold, your plate being wet or your table being dirty or plates not being collected for absolutely ages is about 50/50. The staff are decent though and the pub is generally nice.

7 people for lunch. Very busy but lovely food came out on time. Desert was fab too. Service was excellent. Great value for money.

I want to convey how bad my food at this restaurant I chose the large mix grill and my wife had a salad. My mix grill was really poor. I had to ask the waitress to take the plate of food back as it was all cold but the jacket potato seemed slightly frozen in the middle. one of the onion rings was burnt, the others were undercooked and soggy. The meat pieces were of poor quality especially the tiny bit of steak that was total gristle. all the meat was overcooked. I eat in Wetherspoons fairly often and have enjoyed meals at this pub chain but this meal was absolutely the worst I have ever had. on a positive note, the service was good as we ordered from the table. Our drinks arrived just as I had finished paying on the Wetherspoons app. Someone really messed up here poor show.

Hearty delicious food and great prices for drinks! There's plenty of room for big groups and families, but we found a cozy table for the two of us. The bartender was exceptionally friendly and helpful. Building has a fun history.

As far as spoons food go I can't complain, but i've got to say yesterday morning is the third or fourth time i've visited on a weekend for breakfast and witnessed what I can only assume is the manager (female, dark ponytail) verbally chastising her staff whilst they're front of house. There clearly wasn't enough staff on for remembrance day in a town that has a parade (and i'm assuming management deals with the rota so good job)...

First visit and great coffee 😁😁😁 won’t be the last either you know what you are getting when you go here xxx

Having eaten and drank there on many occasions with family and friends, it's fair to say that the food is better than most 'spoons'.

Assistant manager rude to say the least- after an incident not my fault was told I wouldnt be served when she only had half the story- - a formal complaint coming your way my friend— your beer is crap and your food is barely edible

Astounding service quality food. Breakfasts were amazing good value and a vegetarian option as well. Our server Amy was attentive and friendly.

We visited this pub today 18/10/2018 for a curry, well the food was great but what made the day better was the service, our meal was brought to the table within minutes of ordering the meal. The staff there was amazing especially Ann Marie, she could not do enough for us and on several occasion asked how we were and if the food was ok. We use Witherspoons quite often in different towns and must say this is the best we have been in where the staff are so good and well mannered. We done Ann Marie and the other staff.

Came here quite often during my stay near Chepstow. Nice atmosphere here with good food at reasonable prices. Staff are very friendly and efficient. Look out for their daily specials that include a drink with your meal.

Staying in hotel next door which was not serving food. Just as well as this was a much better place.

The Bell Hanger is a really great example of the Wetherspoon brand. The pub itself is very smart, the service and food excellent. Will definitely visit again when in Chepstow. Well done to the team at The Bell Hanger were just brilliant. Thank you.

First trip back to the Bell Hanger today; my family and I used to visit every month or so but it was getting worse and worse; in August last year we said enough's enough...

Good meeting venue for family and friendd pub grub. Drinks are cheap. This a good meeting venue for family and friends. My only complaint is the tables and chairs have seen better days some are broken but still in use. Also the carpet is really dirty looking even though the lighting is poor.

Me and my other half decided to pop into chepstow on our way home for a bite to eat sunday 16th, was rather busy when we arrived and throughout the visit the atomosphere was great! Bar staff very friendly and made time to chat with us and make us feel welcome. Outstanding service from waitresses cleaning and taking out food and management team went above and beyond to ensure we enjoyed our visit! (Short blonde haired lady.) Food was piping hot and didnt take as long as we thought given how busy they was even apologised for the wait on food which came out in 12 minutes. Would definitely return over and over with that service!

Went for lunch midweek. It was not overly busy and service was very quick and friendly. A very nice Wetherspoons pub. It was very spacious and comfortable. The food arrived quickly and was well up to the usual standard. It was the best part of our day.visit to Chepstow.

Visited with family early on a Monday evening. It was very busy. Our table was filthy. The menus were covered in a greasy film. Trying to place an order at the bar was tense - so many people! We did get our drinks order and after chatting about food we made our choices and I headed to the bar to order. Standing in the line (actually the line of people trying to be noticed and served as none of the bar staff seemed to have any understanding of who had been waiting the longest) I was approached by a man who had obviously been taking full advantage of the cheap Monday drinks, and verbally abused for standing still! Decided that I would not place food order and we all left to seek fish and chips. We walked down stairs to go out via back entrance and the bannisters were filthy, along with the carpets. I know this is supposed to be cheap and cheerful restaurant, but I would love to accompany a hygiene inspector on their visit.

Stopped off here after unsucessfully trying to find anywhere open further West on BH Monday.

We went for drinks and dinner at the Bell Hanger, the staff were friendly and the table service was great. The food was as you would expect it to be for a Wetherspoons, it was not gourmet, but did the trick and filled a gap.

Didn’t know is was a Wetherspoons until we look at the menu. And a good Spoons it is too.

We come here as a group of friends on a regular basis and are never disappointed. The food is great value, as are the drinks! The staff are really friendly, especially Daz The Doorman who is a superstar!

Went out with the boyfriend. Staff were ok. Not super friendly or super helpful. Just average. Food came out fastt which was great. Had a burger and he had a burger too. Both tasty. Good amount of drinks on offer. Would come back again
