Had three nice meals last week but tonight was disappointing at best. Seemed like deep fried leftovers from Sunday. Put my fork into a pig in blanket and it shot across the room. Potatoes were like rocks and the cauliflower cheese was inedible, even after it was replaced. Did make a complaint at the bar just to get a “sorry ‘bout that!” We won't be calling again, sorry ‘bout that!

Came here for a Sunday lunch after it had been taken over and it was easily one of the best we’ve had. We have since returned as a family, service is spot on, food is extremely good. Ambience is lovely and cosy too. On top of that, they catered extremely well for our Type 1 diabetic daughter, as parents were always grateful for this support. A great place that has really been turned around in a positive way.

Review edit as I cannot respond to the response - they did not explain anything to us. A simple ‘no we’re full’ was all that was communicated. I would not have left a review, had we had this conversation. Do not trust their website. It states ‘we welcome walk-ins and will try to accommodate you’ yet when we went in yesterday, to a half empty place may I add, the young boy straight away said they’re full, nothing left. He dismissed us very quickly and sent us on our way. Save yourself the hassle of going there and book before you go! They definitely do not accomodate walk ins!

The venue had a very smokey atmosphere which detracted from the special occasion we were celebrating. Ventilation was poor given the risk still posed by COVID. Service was very good and the food excellent.

We had my son’s wedding at The Bear on 20th September 2024. It was the perfect venue with an olde worldly feel. The Bear Hall (function room) was set up beautifully for the ceremony and then altered for the reception and evening . The staff were super efficient , very accommodating and helpful throughout the whole day and in the lead up to the wedding . The food was just right for the day and I know my son and daughter in law enjoyed the whole experience. The rooms and 2 cottages that were rented out were lovely too and the 3 digs who also attended the wedding made welcome too . I would highly recommend The Bear had a lovely venue for a wedding , but also as a pub to visit for a pint or meal too .

Banging snap as always, love this place. Rate friendly staff too. The only part that I wasn't impressed with was a couple allowing a dog to roam freely around the area that we were eating at as I hadn't been made aware that animals were free to roam around a food establishment. Had I have known this in advance I would have requested a table in a different room due to my allergies.

We have been all over Derbyshire on Sundays to have a roast dinner, today we can here as recommended by a friend. That was the worst roast beef dinner EVER! Undercooked, blood mixed into the gravy and when we was asked how was your meals we got offered a pudding! We still had to pay full price which was £80 absolutely disgusting service, my husband ate his just because he was hungry and couldn’t even chew it ! Definitely won’t be back

Went for a Christmas meet up with family at the dog friendly Bear Inn. The food was mixed, the mains were great and very generous, the deserts less so and a bit of a disappointment. The service was ok, they were all really friendly but at times it was difficult to get hold of anyone. The dining areas are spread across multiple rooms which makes it feel cosy. All said and done, I would happily come back to dine here again.

We had a fabulous meal this lunch time, a very varied and interesting menu ranging from pub grub to game, beautifully cooked and presented, and arrived at the table quite quickly. The interior of the Bear is delightfully old not in the least bit spoiled, there is a large amount of out door seating too. The service was prompt and efficient while being very friendly, apparently a family run establishment and it shows, a great deal of pride in their establishment.

Cracking little place, met up for dinner with the family to have a celebration dinner and stopped overnight. The staff were very friendly and helpful and we had a lovely table in the traditional dining room, nice and snug, our waitress was lovely and when one of the main courses ended up going to the wrong table, they sent a glass of wine as compensation for the wait. The food was lovely, just a small niggle because some of the food was not quite hot enough, but the waitress kindly replaced the brownie. Our room was nice, clean and comfortable, we stayed in Blossom cottage, the only downside was the sofa bed was broken, but the manager quickly sorted another room in the hotel for my brother and his wife, I am disabled so the hotel room was not suitable for me as there were too many stairs, thanks so much for being so considerate. We all had a good nights sleep as the beds were really comfortable, the bathroom was clean and had everything we needed. Breakfast was perfect, the poached eggs especially were spot on and the smoked salmon divine. All in all a lovely place to eat and stay, the only reason I didn’t give it five stars was the main courses did not all come together and a couple of things were not very hot, both of which were apologised for and sorted. Otherwise it was perfect, would definitely stay here again and fully recommend, definitely a hidden gem.

A group of our friends met for a meal. Drinks prices were great! Lovely beer. However, there was a long wait for the meal and service was a bit patchy generally. Unfortunately one person had to wait quite some time even after all others were served. One meal appeared without some of the veg it should have had. Food prices were very reasonable, and the service was pleasant and polite. It's a beautiful old building which dates back to the early 18th c. My own food was great, but others were not so happy. We feel the place still has some way to go to get back to its glory days. Could not really recommend it as things stand.

We were traveling from Houston, Texas and had such a pleasant stay here. We were very delighted with everything about the Bear Inn. The rooms were cozy with comfortable beds and the bathrooms had all new fixtures. The meals that we had here were delicious! The chefs here are top tier. My particular favorite dish was the steak pie. Every bite of it was savory and tender. Breakfasts were filling and satisfying. We stayed here for 3 nights and used it as our home base while visiting Chatsworth House and other sites in the area. It was the perfect place for doing this. After a full day of sight seeing, we would return to the Bear Inn to relax and have a couple of pints in the pub before having dinner. What really made our stay special were the friendly owners, staff and locals. They went above and beyond to make us feel comfortable and welcome. They pointed out local areas of interest for us to visit and explore. We had many conversations over our stay with the owners and various members of staff from the chefs to the bartenders. They were all friendly and sincere. We truly made some good friendships during our time here. We were actually reluctant to leave but our plans wouldn't allow us to stay longer. On our last day, one of the owner's gave us a private tour of the building, showing us all of the different suites and how they were decorated. We definitely recommend The Bear Inn and will be returning ourselves!

Basically we came to The Bear as we were staying local and based on trip advisor reviews. We were not disappointed. Very friendly staff, nothing too much trouble. The menu is comprehensive, with a good choice for vegetarians . We chose a variety of foods from the menu, from the pork loin on the special board to the portobello mushrooms with mixed beans, which was absolutely delicious. The portion sizes are very large, and come with a great selection of vegetables. For us we had broccoli, sugar snap peas and beans. Separate dishes of roast seasoned potatoes came with most of the mains. We ended up not having puddings as we were all too full. Definitely will return a d certainly worth the drive there. The only negative comment from most in the party was the over use of pepper.

I visited The Bear this afternoon with family, I live locally and we all had plated Sunday roasts. The plates was swimming in gravy (not my personal preference), the beef was fatty and very thinly cut, the roasties were not cooked properly and the cauliflower in the cauliflower cheese was very hard and under cooked. I'm not a fussy eater and it's rare for me to not enjoy a meal but this was noticeably poor. The staff were nice and friendly, no issues there and the puddings were fine. I did notice the room where we ate was also cold compared to the drinking section, although it wasn't significant. Reading other reviews i can see some of my comments are consistent. Such a shame for a pub that's got so much history and is in a great location. The current custodians are not living up to The Bears previous great reputation and risk undermining its legacy!

After a walk in shining cliff woods we had booked a table at the bear. We ordered 3 lamb dinners (£18 per head) also 3 drinks. The staff were friendly . When the meals arrived I was not impressed. The veg was OK, BUT the thin fatty lamb floating in my gravy looked more like a soup. It was the thinnest I have ever seen lamb cut .Not to mention the small portions. When asked if everything was OK, i said No, I'm not happy with the lamb. The waiter replied. "I shall tell chef. I ended up paying for the meals & leaving without any apology or explanation. A lovely small pub with great customer service and delicious food, a cosey atmosphere with that authentic rustic feeling. Their roast dinners are very nice, with chicken, beef and pork to choose from, all very nicely done to the level of cookedness you prefer (rare/medium/well-done etc). I'm often disappointed with most pub food (even places that do carvery/roast dinner), as it tends to be cache and carry tier quality with no love put into preparation, but that's not true here, very nice food and high quality, which justifies the higher prices. The location is in a nice and quiet part of the derbyshire countryside. Athough it's secluded, it has decent parking. It's a real pub with proper food, which is what I like about it, a rare find these days. It gives a more rustic, traditional, peaceful and quiet vibe that allows one to feel more relaxed and get a real feeling of ease, while feeling like a welcomed traveler or visitor in old times gone by. I've only been here for dinner so I'm not sure what the rooms at the Inn are like, so I won't give them a score, but by going how everything is managed, I can imagine them being good.

The Sunday lunch was awful - it reminded me of a school dinner. Firstly, the meals were stone cold but quickly exchanged when we confirmed, Roast potatoes - tasted like frozen. Beef - cheap cut, thinly sliced and fatty, Honey roast carrot - boiled carrots with no honey. Cauliflower cheese - undercooked cauliflower with lashings of melted cheese on top. Parsnip - boiled. 2 sprigs of tender stem broccoli - boiled. The Yorkshire pudding and mash (which was still cold even on the second run) was great! Service was also passable and forgettable. We noted that our (second) meal wasn’t great but no comment, not even an apology (and nothing reflected on the bill). Avoid.

We had a fantastic Sunday lunch at this lovely character-filled and nicely finished pub. The food itself was absolutely excellent with very generous portions. The vegetarian nut roast I had was excellent and the chicken which another of our party ordered was also perfectly cooked. These were all accompanied by very generous portions of fresh vegetables and a rich cauliflower cheese. This was followed up by some - again - very delicious desserts with a good selection for vegan and gluten-free diners. To top it off, the service was very quick and the staff friendly and attentive. We can easily say we’ll definitely return if we’re in the area again and I’ll definitely be recommending to others. Thank you!

2 night break at this family run inn. Check in was very easy and we we're shown to our room by the manager which was a very nice touch. The room we we're staying in was very well presented. Lovely decoration and period pieces of furniture. All usual room equipment. Only slight negative was the shower - it wasn't a very powerful one, but worked OK. Well kept and interesting selection of ales available. Food was excellent. The Big Bear breakfast is probably the best breakfast I have had in a hotel. Other breakfast options were also available. These too were great. If you intend to stay here, make sure you book if you wish to eat your evening meal here. It is very popular and it was easy to see why. Absolutely fantastic choice for a great meal! We visited at around 6pm yesterday after a nearby walk, we were shown to a lovely table for two (with room for a border terrier to stretch out in comfort) and drinks arrived promptly along with a menu and a 'specials' board. The choice of starters and main courses was varied and imaginative, but not too extensive. I was torn between three or four possible starters and mains, all were extremely tempting. In the end I opted for the glazed halloumi as a starter and the Bear burger (named after the venue!) with triple cooked chips as a main. The starters arrived and the border terrorist sat up and took notice... the halloumi was outstanding, crispy chunks (sesame coated) in a nicely gooey glaze which combined sweet and tangy perfectly, this dish was definitely the hallmark of a chef who knew what they were doing. The furry rambler was offered a little corner of halloumi and was equally impressed, and she can be very picky... by this time we'd already resolved to return. After an excellent starter I find there's always a fear that the main course will be an anticlimax, but we needn't have worried. The Bear burger exceeded expectations - the meat was rich and tender and full of flavour, and was perfectly complemented by the cheddar, chutney and garlic aioli. Everything about this burger was beautifully balanced, the flavours all came through without fighting with each other. The chips were 'proper', pub chips often disappoint but these were terrific, again it was obvious that the chef understands their art in terms of flavour combinations and techniques. The only distraction from the food was the snuffling and and paw tapping, which, in the end, had the desired effect - it would be churlish to deny a dog a few nuggets of burger and a couple of chips, especially when she kept her demands at a socially acceptable volume. Onto dessert, I chose the warm brownie served with ice cream and it was lovely, the middle was melting but not too dense and the outside suitably light and crisp. Chocolate is, of course, out of bounds for hounds, but ours enjoyed a lick of rich vanilla ice cream before settlling down in the car for a comfortable replete drive home. In all seriousness, this was a joy of a three course meal. The location is stunning, whether you eat inside or out, the menu offers innovative twists on familiar and well-loved favourites and the execution is superb, as good as anything you would find in the best 'gastro-pubs'. The people are lovely, welcoming and friendly and they made our day extra special. We will definitely be back, and we would definitely recommend the Bear Inn to anyoine who enjoys excellent food, a warm and welcoming ambience and an overall home-from-home dining experience. 10s across the board, from all three of us!

Stayed over last night in the Stag room. Lovely quiet room, bed was so comfy and the decor lovely. Had a meal in the evening, the food was delicious. Starters were musroom and lamb then mains were the salmon and bear burger. Breckfast was yummy. Whole experience was relaxing and service from the lads behind the bar was great. Very friendly, welcoming and if you want a little cheeky get away then highly recommended.

Booked online, not an issue. Mentioned in comments we would like a table away from children. Not because we don’t like them, just that having been there done that we just wanted a nice quiet Sunday lunch. Guess what ……… table was next to a table with a noisy toddler. So don’t bother asking. Ordered Roast Beef for both of our Sunday lunch. Have to say presentation was awful, gravy should be served in a jug separately as plate was swimming in it and tbh gravy is a personal thing to me. Having said that the roast was very tasty, although I would say the roasts and Yorkshire’s were frozen. Red Leicester on a cauliflower cheese is new to me. However, I did enjoy it and it was very tasty. After waiting an inordinate time for the sweet “pudding” menu we both ordered Bakewell tart, which was served COLD, with hot custard. WHY? It ruined what could have been a brilliant sweet, generous portion but why not mention it was cold?

Excellent! ! So pleased we chose the bear inn for our stop over stay and we will be back.!! Food lovely and fresh - we had mussels which were beautiful and a large portion. I then had salmon with the lobster bisque which was the best I’ve had and the potatoes were amazing ( I forgot to ask how they were done ) and again a big portion and well presented. All staff were very friendly and we even had a pint with the chef at the end of the night. Accommodation was very clean and decor was lovely. Overall a great experience and will deffo be back.

LOVELY!!! We stopped here for dinner as we were staying locally near by. Wow! The food was amazing! All freshly cooked and very tasty. The service was absolutely fantastic ..very friendly and welcoming. We had our little dog with us and they even cooked us a little chicken breast so he could have something to eat. A very pleasant meal with a cosy surround and fantastic service!! I believe it has just come under new management...but not a problem at all!! Really would recommend it! Thank you If we are in the area again we would definitely revisit. ❤️

The new managers are doing a great job of putting this place back on the map. Our room was lovely and clean and nicely decorated. Plenty of outdoor space for kids to enjoy as well as to sit in the peaceful countryside for a drink. We had burgers for tea which were excellent, breakfast was lovely and the staff were all great. Location is countryside but not far from amenities and for exploring places of interest. I'm definitely going back 😁

we visited here on sunday for a lovely roast, which is absolutely was, just a couple of comments, the gravy was definitely on the runny side, the group of us all like thick rich gravy which this wasn’t. That being said the mash potatoes and the cauliflower cheese was amazing 🤩 also we were disappointed to see salt and pepper in little paper packets, made it feel like a cafe which it definitely isn’t! one last thing, we all scored the roast a good 8.5 but please don’t bother with the puddings, big standard out of the freezer definitely not home made, and the cheese cake was definitely a freezer burnt tart type pudding x we did give feedback which they took onboard🥰

Finally got to this place, wasn't disappointed. Lovely old feel to the place, would love to visit in winter when they have all the fires going. Food delicious, we had starters of mushrooms, lamb and the halloumi, mains were salmon, burger, pie and chicken. They were all very good. Service was quick and friendly. Can't wait to go again.

We have been coming to the Mundy arms for years since moving to the Derby area and We are all gutted to hear it's closing, especially since its the best we've know it in all the years we've been coming. The current staff are head and shoulders the best they've ever been. Service is exceptional, genuine friendly staff who aren't putting on faces, they are happy to be there and that is something that any pub would kill to have. We wish them all the best in the future. The only disappointing things is that we found out the pub was closing via email and Facebook the Friday 12th before they shut on the Sunday 14th. This seems very short notice for all involved. Thank you for everything Mundy Arms!
