We called on a very hot evening and the pub was exceptionally quiet. The beer and gin were good the staff friendly and our dog was welcome in the bar. We ate off the fixed price menu which gave a reasonable choice. The food was served promptly, was beautifully presented and tasted as good as it looked.

Really good food at great value. We had Sunday dinner at the Bay Horse, there was a good range of choices with two roast meats, and we didn't have to choose we could have both! The portions were very generous and the meat beautifully tender. Veg came served separately and jugs of gravy. Puddings were traditional crumbles with lots of custard and for those who couldn't manage there was the most fabulous salted caramel ice cream. We were allowed a taste from the Monday-Saturday menu, the mushroom, black pudding, bacon and poached egg on toast, a meal in itself but so good. As I was driving I didn't have wine but those that did enjoyed the Shiraz and the Merlot. All in all a great tasting, great value meal in a traditional pub

Very pleasant week's stay in a characteristic, friendly village pub with a large car park. The bar area exists as a number of individual rooms, each with a different character. The staff are very helpful and eager to please, the rooms clean and comfortable, and the food is very good (it's a pub - don't expect cordon bleu) and well presented. Pleasant location between Carnforth and Kirkby Lonsdale. Recommended without reservation.

Owners nice. Room nice. Breakfast nice. Had pub grub 1st night. Waited three quarters of an hour for fish, oven chips mushy peas and a chicken dish. Nobody in the pub except someone else who weren't happy. If there would have been somewhere else to eat nearby I would have walked out because it is not acceptable. The chef ?????Came to the bar as if he had fed the five thousand.. I don't know how long Mark and Mel have had the place but the reviews totally confused me. My advice would be Mel take over the food and as a smoker , even I don't like to use an ashtray that doesn't appear to have been emptied since Christmas.Sorry guys !!!

We were recommended to eat here by the owners of the local Band B . We and our dogs were given a warm welcome by the landlord and his staff. We ate there on a "curry night". There was a huge leap yourself buffet. Numerous differnt curries were on offer including several vegetarian options - lots of side dishes too . The pub was packed with customers and had a very happy atmosphere. Would highly recommend !

We stayed here one night whilst on a diving weekend at Capernwray (approx 10min drive). The room was lovely, modern but with the country pub feel. We were so pleased to get in a nice hot shower! We ate in the pub and stayed for a few drinks. The food was delicious and presented beautifully. The new landlord came and sat with us for a little chat, he was really nice and must be great with the locals. We retreated quite early and passed out in our big comfy bed. The breakfast in the morning was also really nice, just what we needed to start our day of diving. We would definitely stay again and would recommend to fellow divers as we were offered help in getting our kit dry etc, and it met our needs for comfort and warmth! Thanks so much!

We visited the pub after I'd just moved into the village. It's a proper village pub, loads of character. We had a nice chat with the new owner and he seems to have good plans for the place. He's already refurbished a lot of things and has other things currently being sorted. Good Wi-Fi, TV, Pool table and darts in a nice place with a good atmosphere.

We booked here using Groupon vouchers thinking it was a different Bay Horse so not a great start. We arrived to an almost empty pub, told to choose a table & given the menus but not asked if we would like a drink. The table was sticky so not a good first impression. We read the menu which covered a wide range of prices & noticed people at another table had different menus, we went to the bar, ordered drinks & asked if we could choose anything on the menu with us using Groupon to be told 'oh, we don't have you down as being Groupon, it's a different menu' . We then had to reconsider from the limited, basic menu, decided what we wanted, returned to the bar to order to be told they had no steak so an alternative choice was made. Our starters arrived ok then the chef came to say my main, a beef burger wasn't available, they'd only had one & a lady on the other table had ordered it ! I asked if they could do a chicken burger, hurray, yes they could do that. By now we were laughing at the chaotic Fawlty Towers type of evening it had turned into. Time dragged on waiting for our mains, bearing in mind we were around 50 miles from home. The food was actually very nice, we then had our desserts & quickly left. Sorry but I wouldn't recommend here, especially if using Groupon, felt unwelcome.

The accommodation is lovely clean and spacious .The pub itself has character and charm.Small , yet big enough to satisfy.Sadly the food was unfortunately lacking.Everything appears to be done by one person , resulting in over done chips which were more crisp like than anything else. No fluffy homemade chips I'm afraid .Food served on small coloured plates is unattractive and portion sizes could of been better.Inexperienced bar staff trying to serve drinks in used glasses also needs to be attended to. Whilst everyone has to learn , some things are a definite no no .The breakfast was very nice , although the lack of any form of breakfast menu again needs attending to.All in all a fairly pleasant experience,. Would I stay here again ? Yes I would Would I dine here again ? Not sure , probably look at other alternatives.

Visited when once again on holiday in the area. The food was just as good and reasonably priced. It's not what one could describe as silver service - the tables/chairs are a hotch potch of shapes and sizes but all very cleanThe chef (possibly the owner or landlord) seems to be the only person cooking and serving food but makes a good job of both.A new bar tender was on duty but he seemed also to cope well under pressure. For a small, old building we were very pleased to see that there was a wheelchair accessible toilet.

The menu wasn't very substantial but we were a group of 5, from 9 to 93 in age and there was something that appealed to everyone. The roast dinner options were chicken and lamb and you could order smaller portions of these which was perfect for the 93 year old. There was a long wait for the food, I think someone should have come and let us know this would be the case. The food was hot and delicious, all homemade. The 93 year old is usually quite picky about food but ate everything up. The kids loved their steak and ale pie and their roast, hubbie was impressed with his curry (something that is usually disappointing in a pub). I had the cheese and onion pie which was lovely, it would have been nice to have more than one vegetable option with it though, or a bit of a salad. For pudding we had a combination of homemade lemon and lime cheesecake and homemade pineapple upside down puddings. The cheesecake was superb, definitely restaurant quality. My sons loved their puddings too. Excellent quality of food, just need to speed up with the service and the tables could do with a better wipe down.

We had dinner and bed and breakfast at the Bay Horse. The package was good value for money. Arkholme is in a scenic part of the country, beautiful countryside. The pub is 2-300 years old and so has charm. The proprietors have added to this with old photographs and so on. The food was tasty and well-prepared, arriving in a reasonable time. There are three vegetarian options on the menu, so some choice; the mains for meat and fish eaters were quite varied. I think most people could find something to eat. Nice puds. Also, the bar serves a range of light meals/sandwiches. I found the chairs in the bar/dining room less than comfortable, but the furniture fitted the spirit of the pub. Our room was larger than I expected - we were given a family room at no extra cost. Sufficiently furnished. Bed comfortable - we both slept well. Unfortunately we both had lots of trouble trying to adjust the shower to other than too hot or too cold. I told the manager next morning and he said a plumber was coming to sort it out. Would have been nice to have been told on arrival, we'd have appreciated it. Lots of options for cooked breakfasts, can't say how good they were as we didn't want sausages etc. The manager did say he could provide a vegetarian cooked breakfast if wanted. We just wanted coffee, toast and marmalade, all of which was plentiful. Again service very good.

My wife, Westie dog and I had three nights in this pub and enjoyed the long weekend break. Our room was large for a country pub and had everything required for our comfort. We ate lunch each day and found it to be satisfactory pub fare. Breakfasts were substantial and filling. The pub is largely run by Ian and his family and whilst this is not a criticism, it was apparent that whilst Ian had a wide experience in the hospitality trade, others had not.The Bay horse is set in the delightful "Thankful" village of Arkholme. The church is of interest as are many of the old residences dating back to 17th century and before. Our stay was based on a Groupon based offer and we considered it to be very good value for money.p

I have been sitting on the sideline deciding whether to leave a review of our stay at the Bay Horse as it was OK and it was in need of staff/manager owner training. Before we arrived we were told that the pub did not open until 5pm so we delayed our check in to coincide with opening time. The opening times do vary between 5pm and 6pm opening. We parked in the car park and proceeded to enter by the back entrance which went through the pool room to the bar. We were shown to our en suite room up poorly lit stairs. There was a good king size bed, bedside cabinets and nice shower. The water was hot BUT next door we were astonished by a guest shouting down the stairs that her shower was cold and she had been waiting for hot water for over 5 minutes!! The windows needed painting and the emulsion for the walls finished one inch in places on the ceiling and skirting board. The room was heated by one radiator. We asked what time evening meals were served and told it was from 6pm. We went downstairs and ordered from the menu on the table. BUT GROUPON menu is different and we were not told this. This caused confusion and I offered to pay the difference but was told it was OK. However my wife's 10oz gammon turned out to be a 5oz gammon so we DID pay the extra. My pie crust was solid, microwaved solid. Breakfast was cereal with a side plate and well cooked breakfast. HOWEVER next day the real manager took over as they had been away for the weekend. For the next two days there was no cereal put out for us!!!! There were no side plates. The mushrooms were not peeled and had the stalk on! The sausage was undercooked and the bacon was hard. The eggs were overcooked and small. The manager was pleasant enough as was his wife/partner but they really should have some training as regards how to run a B&B. Although the stay was OK Groupon customers should be aware that you get what you pay!! If you don't like dogs do not stay here. We were kept awake by two dogs for two nights and one dog for one night. I have run a B&B for a number of years and really wanted to give some solid advice which I sincerely hope is taken on board by my review.

We stayed as a couple Friday and Saturday night at the lovely Bay Horse Inn in the beautiful village of Arkholme. We had a quite large room with equally large bathroom, tea and coffee and comfortable bed. Our evening meals were delicious and along with a fairly decent Merlot, went down a treat. All very reasonably priced. Our host Ian and his wife were very accommodating and friendly and he certainly made a tasty breakfast. The surrounding area was very pretty with lots of little villages to explore. An area I would love to return to. I can't give 5 stars because I felt the rooms were a little tired and some soap in the bathroom would have been good, but overall for what we paid I would highly recommend and if we do return to the area I would certainly stay at The Bay Horse again.

The hosts are friendly and welcoming, the food was brilliant, if I lived in arkholme I would be in several times per week, the menu is all local sourced produce and you can tell you are dealing with quality food. Very reasonable it was too. The pub is cosy and has a real local feel with everyone talking to each other across the tables in a way you do not see anymore. We stayed for one night on a 'Buy a Gift' voucher, which included dinner. The room (room 3) was large and could have been lovely with just a little thought. For example - the towels were wafer thin, hard as cardboard and grey (they were originally white towels). The kettle was nowhere near a plug socket so we had to move things around the get a cuppa! No hand soap in the bathroom, no towel rail or toilet roll holder in the bathroom. TV really tiny and wasn't working on the Sunday morning (no signal). The WiFi was slow and intermittent, so we gave up! No comfortable seating, despite the room being large enough to accommodate a small sofa or couple of chairs. With only 3 rooms to maintain, these small details wouldn't cost much to rectify .... And would make such a difference.Dinner was OK ... Basic pub food. We were told the included 'dinner' was only a main course (priced at around £8 - £9), a supplement for steak, but they were sold out of steak anyway. We later (when we returned home) checked on the website and found out that we should have also had a glass of wine included in dinner, but we were charged for the wine.We were woken in the early hours of the morning by a piercing fire alarm .... Had to go out to investigate and told it was a false alarm! All in all, not the relaxing break we would have hoped for .... But with a relatively small amount of effort by the owners this review could have been so much better.

I can honestly say this was the worst meal I've ever had! We went out for a 'pub tea' for our wedding anniversary we didn't want anything special or al a carte so thought this place was ideal. The food was good pub food, desserts were very nice ( especially the sticky toffee pudding).Plenty of walks in the area with some lovely views. We took our dog with us, which is a bonus for him to be able to stay, don't think the bay horse owners are dog people though really as they never acknowledged him once which was a bit of a shame. Highly recommended and would return.

Recently had a two night stay here, the room was warm, nicely furnished and very clean. Beds were extremely comfortable and the en-suite shower room again was very clean. The bar area is very cosy, and as an old building it has retained lots of lovely original features. The staff were very pleasant and friendly as were the other guests and the locals drinking in the bar area. The food was very nice and the cooked breakfast in particular was lovely. There is ample parking, a nice beer garden and a bowling green if you're lucky enough to go on a sunny day! The village is very quiet and pretty and surrounded by beautiful countryside. Definitely recommended.

Stayed 2 nights with Groupon voucher. Very good value for money. In standard double room which was ok with large bathroom, great bonus. Best was the food, delicious and enormous portions. After seeing what other people had, we asked for half portions of chips & still had to leave some! Next night we had the light bite option and portions were still generous. Breakfast was also very good, full English was excellent, great start to day. The locals in the bar were very friendly, making the visit more enjoyable. Would definitely recommend.

Bought 2 nights for 3 via Groupon and tried to book via telephone but went to voice mail. I emailed the Inn requesting a Friday to Sunday night for 2 adults and one child which went unanswered on the 13th of June. I did receive a telephone call back from the owner who stated all weekends were booked for the duration of the deal. After consulting with my wife so we could co-ordinate with our jobs etc we settled on a Sunday the owner said was available. Arriving on the 3rd of July we checked in with the young chap at reception very friendly who called the owner. The owner was polite but somewhat distant and we got the feeling we were not welcome. After bringing our bags to the room we had the owner knock on the door a while later and notify my wife that we have a 2 night voucher but the inn is closed Monday so we have to check out at 10 am Monday morning. At dinner I asked the owner if there was an alternative and the answer was no and due to a death in the family ; who would be occupying the rooms Monday we had to leave. We were not offered any compensation for the lost day and breakfast or an apology. My email which went unanswered did have the 2 night deal clearly displayed. We were the only people at breakfast and again the lady who served us was polite but abrupt and we got the feeling we were not welcome again. This is sadly my first negative review of a hotel / inn as we do go with a open mind and don't expect much for the reduced rates but rather enjoy the surroundings. The dinner, breakfast and accommodation can't be faulted and I will happily recommend you stay for that alone but would not recommend the place to friends and family after our experience. After travelling 2+ hours from Staffordshire and leaving the next morning , which was very dissapointing not to mention costly. The village and all its brick houses etc are a pleasent view and 15 minutes away is Sizergh castle, a National Trust property well worth a view inside and on the beautiful grounds which we did after checking out so as not to spoil an already bad day. If you Google things to do in the postcode you'll have lots to keep you busy. Again,,a great inn but a poor experience for us but worth taking note of the fine print as this Inn has no sympathy no matter who is to blame. Our experience means we will not recommend this Inn to friends or family simply because of the unfriendly experience we received and I can assure you were not fuss pots but very humble. It's worth also mentioning we paid for a child's small pizza, £4.95 with £5 in coins and did not receive the 5p change. It would have gone into the charity box on the bar. Why we were not given our change i don't know. I was not going to make a fuss over 5p which was going into the charity box. Sadly we could have stayed a few miles away in a big establishment we've stayed at before in various locations for £69 any time of the week instead of the £94 we payed. We like to do Groupon and other deals once a month and support British business but hey ho, one dud in 13 years is not bad.

The meal here was really good and tasty and we asked for garlic mayo which was made for us, how good is that? I had prawn cocktail to start and hubby had chicken goujons which were very good. I then had steak and ale which was tasty and the meat was tender but pastry not so. hubby had lasagne which he enjoyed. would come again no problem.

Stayed here for 1 night dinner, bed & breakfast. Food was tasty, beds were comfy and the service was friendly so we had a lovely stay. The pub was quiet on the evening we stayed but I imagine many pubs are the same mid week, we used it as a base for walking near Ingleton which was not too far away. I would definitely return and would recommend to others who wished to stay in the area.

Stayed here on a Groupon deal fo £54 for 2 course dinner bed and breakfast. We had a lovely stay the staff were polite and helpful. The food was very enjoyable freshly cooked and vert tasty. Clean room with a lovely deck to sit on and read. Deck could do with a bit more furniture maybe a small rattan set as wooden bench was not ideal if a few guest staying. Overall a lovely village and Inn.

The evening food was really nice and they give good portion sizes. The breakfast was tasty in the morning and you could order whatever you like. Our little one wanted weetabix and the gentleman got some from his own daughters personal stash - very accommodating. We had a lovely weekend and would not hesitate to return!

Would of liked a Bath in our room but the shower was very hot ..Tea coffee making facilities. Complimentary Shampoo and shower gel and soap. The food is good and large portions . The men had th eLamb Rogan Josh this was a little bland meat was lovely but not like a curry more a stew. It was quiet on the friday night but saturday was really busy . The Breakfasts are good Ian asks what you would like and there are Cerial as well if you want it The log burner was a lovely addition to this pub. Ian and Joanne are lovely people and would chat to us when they had the time . The Pub is not near anywhere Kirby Lonsdale is about 6 miles away its a small town with not much there ..We did go to Bowness and Kendal while we were there. Would recommend .

We had dinner and B&B with a Groupon voucher. Very nice, freshly cooked food. Rooms spacious clean and big. Very friendly staff with snug dining area. Only a few niggles: Radiators in room were cold in the evening but there was an electric fire. No juice with breakfast provided. Only a small selection of cereals but no bowls put out. Our room could have done with some seating. However, the food was freshly cooked and pleasant. Overall a very pleasant stay for one night and the voucher made it exceptional value!

I bought a Groupon voucher some time in 2015 but never got to use it with various problems & ill health. I emailed Ian & told him the voucher was about to expire & if he knew of someone who really could do with a short break to give them the two days rather than the voucher be wasted. He replied saying he is prepared to let us go up there when it is convenient! How thoughtful! We went up on Saturday 23rd of January & walked into an old pub that looked quite small with a little bar. It's full of character, has lots of history, is in a tiny village on the road to Kirby Lonsdale which is just 5 miles down the road. We discovered two other rooms & a large kitchen where the delicious meals are made. A good menu & local foods that are delicious. Many of the people in the pub had just come back from a pheasant shoot, the place was very busy. We were shown to our room upstairs which is quite big & overlooked the road in front of the pub with a good size car park at the side. The room has a spacious bed, tea & coffee making facilities & some lovely biscuits which we thought was a nice touch! TV wardrobe & plenty of drawers. A small but adequate bathroom with both bath & shower. Nice soft towels & soap. We were given a set of keys which were for the room door & a side door which leads out onto the car park & a beer garden which we thought would be quite busy in the warmer months. Also there is a bowling green. After unpacking we went down in the pub & had a choice of coffee/tea alcohol soft drinks. We had a soft drink each which was cheaper than any place we've been before. We took a drive out to Kirby Lonsdale 5 miles along the road. It was busy, lots of pubs, coffee shops, craft shops, wine shops & even a sweet shop with all the old brand of sweets that we remembered from our childhood. We went into a bakery & through the back was a very busy tearoom with people enjoying coffee & scones, sandwiches, meals, which all looked very nice. We arrived back at the pub at tea time & chatted with Ian & his wife, a lovely young couple. Took us a while to decide what to order off the menu as we like most things. Cumberland ring with onion gravy, choice of potatoes & country veg, very tasty! The next morning we went down for 10am & were given the choice of anything we wanted for breakfast. The bacon eggs fried tomatoes beans toast followed by toast & marmalade were very tasty! We could have had anything, nothing was too much trouble! As we were both just getting over bronchitis & nasty colds we agreed we would like to go back to the Bay Horse again, during the summer months. For £95 for two it was well worth the drive up the M6 just past Lancaster. You can come off at Carnforth & make your way along the country lanes to the pub-which is right on the junction of Arkholme village cross roads, it's painted white! Theres a village hall across the junction on the right, also at the junction is the sign post for Kirby Lonsdale.

I stopped here on way back from Morecombe, I ordered the Sea bass meal which comes with new potatoes and veg. It was cooked fine, but there was only one very small piece of Sea bass, in fact the potatoes and veg dominated the plate! It was cooked well though. Beer was ok.Because of the small amount of fish, I wouldn't return here.

Five of us booked in for a double celebration and were not disappointed as a very special occasion unfolded. The atmosphere, standard of service and quality of the food were top-notch....full marks to Roy and his staff! The Crown has built up a deserved reputation for excellence and, importantly, consistency. Christmas lights twinkling merrily along Morecambe seafront provided an attractive backdrop as we made our course selections from a. wide-ranging and tempting menu. We all agreed that our respective choices were first class, helped down by a couple of bottles of an extremely drinkable red! All in all a great night and wonderful company.

I love this place especially your crispy cake slices. But your hot chocolate today was not good. Didn't complain as haven't got the time but far too much cream and marshmallows in hit chocolate so there felt like no hot chocolate to drink and what was there was not hot. Go easy on cream !
