Well this is the worst weather spoons I've been it the staff looked like something from Halloween manager so rude we left

We visited the Battesford Witham, (Wetherspoons and we were treated like criminals. We did make a mistake with our order and pointed it out as soon as it was brought to the table. We understand that policy meant they couldn’t change but then we found the food to be stone cold. We asked if it could be reheated or if possible changed to the correct order in view of it being cold. This is when a very confrontational, aggressive woman came over insinuating that we were making it up to change the order, before I could say we would just like it hot, she ‘told’ us that it would be replaced with exactly the same as originally order. As a Customer Care manager for a large multi national company I found we manner both insulting and very short sighted. Had she apologised for the cold food and asked if we would like the same or something different this would have been a very different review. Clearly no ability to see an opportunity for good comments

This is a nice looking restaurant with lots of history. Looks nice and clean and was looking forward to a nice breakfast, however the experience was ruined by the miserable lady serving at the bar. Try and raise a smile for your customers. It doesn't cost anything, or put someone serving who looks like they actually want to work. Then the food came out. All was cooked ok but everything was cold. The Sausages had a slight warmth about them but everything else was cold. Even the hash browns which are usually the temperature of the sun, seemed to have just come out the fridge. All in all, not a great start to the day.

Popped into Wetherspoons for lunch with my three children, the individual servicing us a Chris who advised me she was the manager was clearly not wearing a bra which I didn't expect in a family pub when someone is so well endowed on a cold day Put a bra on love it's a family pub

We visited for curry night tonight with friends, we visit quite often. Staff are normally very polite and nice, surprisingly we had a very poor experience due to the waitress who was clearly not interested her job, she was rude and ignorant when the order was incorrect, and actually turned her back on us and walked away. I understand that staff work hard and some days are stressful. But no excuse for bad manners

Food was terrible stone cold and inedible they agreed to do again and said it would b ten minutes, 2 minutes later the food came out one still stone cold the second with so much steam coming off you couldn’t touch or eat it without it scolding you! I went to the bar to complain and the First Lady was very polite and the alleged manager came over looking at me with her mouth open the whole time telling me it was freshly cooked! I said obvs that’s not the case as the steam was bellowing off one plate and the second one was stone cold again! I said obviously it wasn’t just cooked again from scratch in 4 minutes and like a petulant child she just kept saying, well it was! I just said can I have a refund plz so I can leave and she did eventually. Then her boss came over despite the last woman telling me she was the most senior person there saying I’m not welcome back for abusing the last woman! I didn’t I literally just said at the I end I just want to f-Ing leave and apparently that was abusing the staff despite the fact she was blatantly lying and calling me a liar! I told the actual manager what happened and she said I don’t care I’m supporting my staff! I said so it doesn’t matter what happened then and she said no, I said ok don’t worry ill leave and she kept having a go at me, I said I’m already going why are you still hurling abuse at me and she said, oh you just want to have the last word! Ironic! The food was stone cold and then microwaved and I did ask politely right up until the point where they wanted me to take a lie detector test! They clearly couldn’t cook the meals from scratch in 4 minutes and I even said I’ve seen the Wetherspoons documentary the food is cooked hours ago then left in a tray! They lied, bullied me then when I questioned it I got told I’m not welcome simply for saying I just want to f-ing leave and they used that like I was the dishonest party! They lied and treated me terribly and the food was inedible! Never been treated so badly in my life and as an extra has anyone ever known such a weak Werherspoons barring? I saw some bloke smash a glass over someone’s head in the same pub a couple years ago and no one said a word!! Shameful!

Ordered cod and chips on mobile app to be told out of cod? So I changed my order and my wife had the vegan pizza, the pizza was dry as any I have ever seen, no cheese and a scattering of some veg and a few mushrooms. My wife was up all night with an upset stomach. The only good point was the service, beside that a visit I would avoid in the future, which is a shame as I have been reviewing all wethersooons in Essex (8 so far) and rated them all with five stars.

On Saturday 16th September 2023 i took my family for lunch (there was 4 adults/2 children) my husbands lunch was much smaller than my grandsons childrens meal when i pointed this out to a member of staff she was very unhelpful and borderline rude then my sons lunch had a big hair in it (yuck) my son didnt feel hungry anymore the service was terrible the food may be cheap but thats because its tiny portions and inedible very very disappointing

The staff are shockingly poor. The 'manageress' is incredibly rude. I don't understand why someone who appears to dislike the general public, chose hospitality as a career.

Pub was only about a third full but there was not one clean table available,dirty plates and glasses everywhere . Tried to order a curry but was told that they’re ‘not cooking rice today’ So had a Burger and a mixed grill which were ok for the price . Won’t be going again,place was filthy

Don't get me wrong, they are what they are and generally i am happy in a wethys but this one is hard work. Dirty tables not cleaned, extremely slow service, wrong meal substitute despite advising of an allergy, a whole host of menu choices out of stock. It wasn't particularly busy so i can only assume it is not well managed.

It’s local to me so pop in now and again while passing. The beers are cheaper than 99% of anywhere else. We’ve never had a bad meal. It gets too busy for me on Friday and Saturday evening, but that’s fine with me. Breakfast is good value as well

We were to late for breakfast menu so we both order a bunch,one large and one small,asked if we could have add some toast as well.,to which I was told I could by the the girl behind the bar.Our food arrived with no toast I asked if was coming and was told that we shouldn’t have ordered it due to the time,it did come when we had finished but was burnt on one side and the other side had never seen the toaster,

5 of us just had a large breakfast. We were told it was a 30 minute wait for food. That didn’t bother us, we were happy to wait. When we had out food delivered, it was pure disappointment. All of our breakfasts were cold with the only thing lukewarm being the hash browns. All the food was cooked properly but had obviously just been left on the side. The toast was more like warmed up bread! Will never eat there again!

It was nearly 9pm and it was music to our ears when they said the kitchen was open until 11pm. Fish & chips plus ham, egg & chips were duly ordered and delivered a few minutes later. The building was used as a court house (hence the judge’s gavel on the pub sign) and has exposed beams and patterned brickwork giving it a real country pub feel. Staff were friendly and all very pleasant.

Good points. Friendly staff. Meal arrived quite quickly. I had simple ham egg and chips. It was not good! Eggs were cold, the ham was awful , even cheap supermarket ham looks more appetising than what was on my plate . Chips were warm they are what they are at Wetherspoons taste wise. Daughters meal was ok, you get what you pay for . Have been to a few Wetherspoons , this is by far worst for food . Won’t be returning.

Often pop in for breakfast and always impressed with friendly, efficient service, reasonably priced food and good selection of real ales. Excellent value for money - especially the unlimited coffee! - and love the pizzas.

Went here for breakfast today. Sadly the cooked breakfast was virtually cold, which spoilt it. Everything else was well up to standard, the covid precautions were good, the staff friendly and helpful, prices excellent, and the wait for the meal was only about 10 minutes....

The floor isn't sticky, there is plenty of room with different settings and you can find corners to tuck away in if you want to get away from the noise.

First breakfast visit for a while and it did not disappoint! Breakfast first class. Hot and freshly cooked, coffee and refills really good and Staff as always efficient and friendly. Yes a good visit again Try it!

Very reasonably priced food and drinks,now have a pizza oven, they are the best ever pizzas,better than Pizza Hut in my view, 11 inch pizza and a drink for around £7. Two of us can eat and drink for around £15. Breakfasts are my husbands must have, full English for around £5, extra sausage for 50p and so on,you must give this and other Witherspoon places a go,but don't expect table cloths, enjoy

Poor experience after not visiting the place for some years. I used to take my disabled father here regularly it used to be quite good.

I have visited this place several times, it’s just a weatherspoons... beautiful buildings and cheap food. A shame as it has a beautiful garden and as usual a beautiful building. I just wish it was a bit clean. Food takes forever to be served and wherever you touch your hands get stuck to surfaces as it’s just dirty.

Went with our daughter in law and her parents and ordered five meals. Although it was stated at the time of ordering that we wanted our starters before our main meals, all the food was brought out together. We told the waitress that we didn't want the mains yet as they would get cold. She reluctantly took them away. I had ham, egg and chips and the egg was cold, mentioned it to a waiter and he apologised and took the meal away to replace the egg with a warm one. C'est la vie. Our friend who had ordered a steak with jacket potato couldn't eat it as the steak was tough and the potato reheated, which gave it a funny tangy taste. A more senior member of staff came along and apologies profusely offering either a new meal or refund, she chose the refund as it would have taken too long to replace the meal. He said ok, went away but came back and said as we had had a bad experience he would refund all the meals which he did. It was very busy the evening we went and apparently a member of staff had called in sick so they were very short staffed. Although my husband and I have never been a fan of Wethersppons ( our friends love them ) we felt that we had been treated more than fairly over what was a disastrous outing and will possibly go back ( when it's not so busy ) and give it another try.

Popped in for breakfast with my son. We ordered from the table. Waited quite a while for food. Waiter brought food apologised for the wait but food was very cold. Spoke to someone else who got food replaced. They apologised too.Only the replacement was also only luke warm. We ate what we could without complaining again. I think the issue may have been the plates the food was served on were very cold. Hot plates for hot food might be a better idea!

I was in there last night for a meal with 3 friends. We ordered 2 steaks a veg meal and lasagne. The steaks were really tough and the chips were cold and the peas were cold. Thepub was packed and we couldn’t get hold of anyone to complain. Wasn’t happy

Drove 10 miles for a mid week steak on "steak night". Had run out of steaks by 7.30! - what a con. When it came to dessert only one on offer from the entire menu. Complete waste of time

Lovely old building, staff friendly, food cheap and reasonably ok, the thing that lets it down is the cleanliness of the place. The whole place needs a good clean, from the carpets to the toilets to the tables. Everything feels sticky and the table I was on had someone’s initials scratched on the surface. I’ve been in better clean Wetherspoons, it seems that because it’s an old building then why bother keeping it clean.

As far as Wetherspoons go this is one of the better ones. We used to go here a lot for breakfast on the weekend and occasionally in the evenings if meeting friends.

We had lunch here on a Wednesday. The paninis were good and arrived quickly even though it was busy. The food and service were as you'd expect from a Wetherspoons. We'd happily eat here again.

The Battesford Court, which is a Wetherspoons pub is a lovely old building and a lovely place to eat. I must admit that it is one of my favourites. If you like tasty food and don't mind a family atmosphere then this is the place to go.As with all Wetherspoons pubs the prices are very reasonable, the service is very good and the food is good honest fare. Don't miss the chance to visit this lovely old building. Well worth a visiit.

We decided to eat here before shopping. The Battesford Court is another Wetherspoon pub but probably the nicest venue I've visited to date. For a start it isn't a former cinema or department store.

Fabulpous building but just a shame that Wetherspoons have got hold of it. No doubt doing a good but boring job. However, if you cannot stomach supporting a man hell bent on wrecking the UK go ahead - any sane remainer will cross the road.

My Wife and I stopped of at this Pub on the way to Colchester. Usually the service is very good. However this time I asked for extra Cheese and paid more for our Nachos and as the photos show here there was very little cheese at all. We have eaten these here before without problem but I guess the chef couldn’t be bothered this time. Please sort it out Wetherspoons. We like coming here but expect to get what we pay for.

This was my mum's first visit to a wetherspoons. We stopped for breakfast, on our way home from the airport, she was just off a plane from Nz and was exhausted.... She was bowled over by the decor, quality and value she was met with.

Bust on down to Witham's 'Spoons' (The Battesforde) very early evening on a saturday, with my wife, mother-superior & 2 young kids (1 & 6 respectively). The place was absolutely rammed. And it was mostly diners, not (as often is the case in Wetherspoons venues) beer users, hitting the ground running, in preperation for a night at the local disco hall! On arrival, we literally could not get a table to seat us, the place was a beehive of activity and people were lapping up the affordable food like hungry, wanton puppies! What a sight! After speaking to one of the very affable young waiting staff (lovely teenage blonde lassie), she guided us expertly to a table where we could all be seated comfortably (including our baby in a high chair).

As are most WeAtherspoons,this is a no frills ,pub grub venue,but the Batsford has it,s own charm, Wood3n beams ,brickwork ,alcoves etc.,Make it a charming place to frequent.Prices as alwAys are cheaper than anywhere else in town,but food quality is good,and there is a wide range of beers to rival any establishment.Mondays give you even cheaper beer etc. so overall ,not the Ritz,but a jolly good place to eAt and drink.

A cold rainy Easter morning, but inside a warm friendly welcome. Full English breakfast was excellent,freshly cooked and piping hot.Hot toast and butter.and unlimited coffee Clean tables and friendly efficient staff ( as always ). Not disappointed at all.Prices really reasonable too.

Been to this pub a few times - live 8 miles away so not my local! But it’s Spoons, so cheap and cheerful. Been to lots of Spoons - most are cheap, but some are not cheerful! Here, though, the staff are very friendly, the atmosphere is relaxed and good, the building is interesting and very welcoming. Well worth a visit - one of the cheaper Spoons, but with a great atmosphere! Wide choice of real ales and real ciders - a priority for me!

Great Wetherspoons value and beer selection, even better is the service and they have some great wines as well.

We have been to this Wetherspoons many times. We particularly like the Steak nights. We’ve also been to many other Wetherspoons but The Battesford Court has always seemed to be the most consistent. The Steak has always been cooked as we order. The service has always been friendly and we’ve never had to wait long for our food. Of numerous visits I cannot recall a bad experience (touch wood). Wetherspoons is never going to be fine dining but this seems to be one of the better ones.

Excellent lamb shank today. Good service and good food at a reasonable price, not to mention the fine selection of drinks. This is my favourite Wetherspoons.

As usual a good place for lunch. Christmas menu on offer or “ steak day “ which offers great selection of steaks and other lunches. Food was hot and fresh, Staff pleasant and efficient and to follow ? Christmas pudding of course!!! Yes great lunch with friends.

Friendly staff and good food , I had the chicken bacon and avocado salad and my husband had the doom bar pie ,both well cooked and well presented .we will definitely be back .

Food is always good and great selection for kiddies too. Can't fault the service and Jo the manager is always really friendly and welcoming. Would recommend!

I was a little disappointed when I visited a few weeks ago (see earlier review) but I was reassured today.

It's a nice bar, with nice friendly staff and fair priced food and drink however. I've never felt so uncomfortable with a member of manadgement before she wasn't just throwing me filthy looks but members of her own team as well I was so uncomfortable. I understand working in a busy environment can be hard work and exhausting but making me feel that uncomfortable from her miserable atmosphere and rudeness to staff and me was outrageous. I wouldn't attended again unless she wasn't there.

This is one of the nicest Wetherspoons we've been to. Lovely staff and great range of beers and ciders. The food is the usual range but as always nicely cooked and well presented at a budget price. Recommended!

A great Weatherspoons pub. Met a crowd of people here on a Thursday evening, and although the pub was quite busy, we managed to get some tables and organise some food. Good weatherspoons food it was too, the beer and Doombar Ale pie was great, with a nice thick jug of gravy on the side, chips and peas. Others had fish and chips and similar fare. All came to the table in good time, and well cooked and well presented. The only downside was had to go find our own condiments. The overall evening was good the atmosphere in the pub was friendly, the food and drink very reasonably priced.

I understand that is a pub but standard of toilets .... ???! will not come back to this place! Staff should be brief by management that toilets does exists in that pub :(

The pub, a timber-framed building with a brick facade, was sympathetically refurbished some years ago. I visited late morning during the week. The atmosphere was relaxed and there was a reassuring absence of noisy drunks and boozing mums with their screeching brats, a negative feature one associates with some other Wetherspoon pubs. Service was fast and good (not always something that can be relied on at Wetherspoon pubs).I ordered a Doombar, a beer I usually enjoy, but it tasted stale and vinegary. This was especially disappointing as this pub has a well-deserved reputation for well-kept real ale, which it has lived up to on numerous previous visits. I hope this was an exception and not the start of a downward trend.

We Popped in for lunch with mother and found a table straight away. Ordered food and it arrived within 10 minutes, best bit was the real ales that were on offer. Lovely inside with beams everywhere. Overall a very nice place.

Popped into this Wetherspoon with my partner on a Friday evening to take part in the "Fish Friday Club" where you can order fish, chips and peas and a drink is included in the price - £5.90 (inc soft drink), or £6.90 (inc an alcoholic drink). We ordered 2 fish meals, one with soft drink and one with an alcoholic drink and a side order of 12 onion rings and bread and butter.It was quite a busy Friday evening, but we were left disappointed with our meals. The fish was served very hot (although it may have been left in the fryer too long, as it was was very crispy, but it still tasted OK. However the chips and onion rings were served cold, although the onion rings got a bit warmer if you picked one from the bottom of the dish! The chips were tasteless, cold and had started to congeal on the plate. The peas were also only "luke warm" and it wasn't a great meal.This was the first time we had eaten at this Wetherspoon's and it didn't match up to the standards of other Wetherspoon pubs we have used in the the past. Perhaps it was just "an off night" as the pub was busy, but I feel the chips and onion rings may have been under a heat lamp too long whilst the fish was being fried.We found the pub to be welcoming, with a nice layout inside and a lovely patio area with seating out the back to enjoy in the summer months. However, the food was a let down and I am reluctant to to go back.

I came here with a friend for a drink and lunch one weekend. There are plenty of tables tucked away around corners, so you can escape the crowds if you want! They had an excellent selection of beers available, both on tap and bottled. The menu is typical wetherspoons, so excellent value. I particularly like the meal and a drink deals- you get generous portions for a very decent price! There are two outside areas, which seemed very popular. I realised I had misread the table number after ordering so rushed back to the bar, and they easily amended this for me with no problem. The staff were all very friendly and the food was brought out quickly. I will definitely be visiting again!

I have been a regular , with my family, for a number of years now. We visit a number of times a week for drinks, lunch time snack or in the evening for a meal/drinks.The Manageress and her team do a great job. Never a complaint.I feel safe and comfortable taking my family there at any time.The range of drinks is terrific. I love Real ale and the Abbot ale is the best pint for many miles around.!

First we we told there was no vindaloo so we ordered chicken madras. We waited over an hour to be served our curry and we were served beef madras and we told 'we don't do chicken madras'. The curry was black and hard in places as if it had been microwaved too long. I did complain. We won't rush back!!!

Not the place for fine dining & one or two of the customers left a lot to be desired but the steak meal was better than expected & the service friendly & efficient.

We met our Son here for a Mother's Day breakfast and we were not disappointed. Although it was really packed, the Breakfast was great. Hot,fresh and enormous there is also free top up for coffee and service was friendly yet efficient. As always a good meal.

My wife and I visited today along with her aunt and her uncle who's 90th birthday it was.This was our first time at this location, although we use wetherspoons nationally.A large pub with lots of character, plenty of space and a good atmosphere.We ordered four meals and drinks, all were well prepared and presented and served together in about 15 minutes, piping hot and flavoursome.The ale was perfect, as is usual in any wetherspoons house.I was served by a delightful young lady who I found out was on her first day. She was personable, polite and pleasant and pulled a good pint, had obviously experienced good induction.We all thoroughly enjoyed our food and drinks and it was appreciated the way several of the staff made a point of wishing our old uncle a "happy birthday"A good pub in the wetherspoons tradition.

Stopped here for a Sunday dinner with the family. We all had different food and all enjoyed it. Steak and ale pie was really good, ribs were nice, steak cooked as ordered (rare). Nice Sauvignon wine and fife people are and drank for £45! Would go again and recommend.

Ok food for a budget meal. Staff could be more friendly and please sort out your post-mix and gas. Every other time i go I have to point out the lemonade is flat or needs a new post mix box attached as the syrup has ran out. Very very basic constant fault. Just check the gas and lift the boxes to check if they are empty!!

Mediocre beer range was mediocre in quality and often unavailable. It is comforting that the unusual denizens, lurking in the gloomy corners, appear to be more heavily monitored than Fort Knox. Either the place is being readied for a reality show or they are anticipating some kind of biblical level commotion. After hearing a very angry man forcefully suggesting that a steak special was, perhaps, less than acceptable, we decided not to eat.In all reality it would probably have been fine, but it is yet another place where nobody cares. The staff are bored or skiving actually serving, but you get a cheap drink eventually. So you don't really care either. And a little bit of you dies inside. I wasn't aware it was a Wetherspoons until well after: It rather proves my point. Cheap, not actually good, but ok. Because they're cheap.

Zijn hier op Zondagmiddag geweest. Bijna heen plaatsje te vinden. Waren met 7 personen. Merendeel bestelde een van de burgers op het menu. Deze stonden snel op tafel en waren ook nog lekker. En dat voor die prijs. Een aanrader.

For a wetherspoons this a great family pub no matter the occassion. Especially if you fancy a nice hearty breakfast, it's always cooked fresh, it's hot and is yummy. The staff are always polite and friendly.

Visited for lunch mid week. We just missed breakfast so had all day brunch sausages,eggs, beans chips. All hot and fresh. Scampi and chips was also freshly cooked. Staff efficient and room was warm and clean as usual.

Popped in just to use the toilets but were very pleasantly surprised by the decor, atmosphere, buzz and cosiness. We saw some lovely meals being delivered to other customers and decided to stop for lunch. We each had the chef's special fish and chips and latte. It was served up quickly and was delicious and well presented. My partner asked for a glass of water and this appeared almost immediately. In all a great experience and we shall return!
