The Barrels is a great wee pub on Bridge Street in Berwick, traditional style bar with a range of beers, lagers and spirits. A quirky interior with an eclectic range of paraphernalia on the walls and hanging from the ceiling. There is a cellar area with a second bar which hosts free live music and DJ sets and although small has a great atmosphere as it is quickly full. They also host a regular free film night where you can enjoy interesting films on the big screen and chat about the film afterwards over a pint.

Characterful place ruined by the staff. Four of us arrived with an 18 month old for a couple of drinks whilst we were visiting. Not sure if the barman was anti-out of towners, anti-children or was just having a bad day, but hospitable he wasn't, which is a bit of a pre-requisite for running a public house, where people should be made to feel welcome. We were made to feel quite the opposite. He whinged that we had brought a pram in, but said that he would "let us off" as he hadn't seen us come in. Then proceeded to tell us to keep our 18 month old sat down. A really nice group of older people came and sat next to us and were chatting with us. They were great craic and loved the little fella, but said that they had experienced the same on previous visits. Then a big group of young people came in and were struggling to fit in the space. The barman wasn't happy with them sitting on the arms of the couches, so told them to stand up. Seems to be a common theme. Needs a change in attitude and then the atmosphere will follow.

Cool pub in the centre of Berwick-upon-Tweed. I stumbled across the place on a cold, windy Monday evening in March. It was quite busy for a Monday evening, and the barman and regulars in there were immediately really friendly and made me feel very welcome. I propped up the bar and enjoyed some good beer and great chat. Monday is local music night on the sound system. Only the main bar was open when I visited, but downstairs there is a cellar space where they hold regular gigs (a real mix of stuff from all types of music to film nights). I'd definitely recommend visiting The Barrels if you're in town! Cheers

Being fortunate enough to travel for a living, I’ve made it my purpose to find great places to visit and explore whilst staying in the locality. Pubs, proper pubs, have a very special place in my heart. I was brought up in them and I love to find a good one - especially one run by a great, and entertaining beer keeper. Sorry if you’re thinking I meant Martin was this person I was eluding to, (just kidding Martin) a couple of nights I’ve had to stop, on my reccy of the toon, and I have to say, by far the most welcoming. Thank you and see you again soon. John.

The Barrels is a Berwick institution and a fabulous quirky, yet traditional pub with great beer, locals and atmosphere. It has 4 or 5 real ales on regular rotation and all the usual mainstream kegs of beer and cider. Nice crisps! Mad decor! The cellar bar downstairs is also a great venue for sweaty weekend gigs. If you’re in Berwick and like nice beer, consider it to be number 1 and 4 of the Bridge Street pub crawl with numbers 2 and 3 being The Curfew and Atelier 😀

I always used to visit this place several times during our annual pilgrimage to Berwick (the dentists chair at the bar always fascinated me). However, upon our last visit we found that the cask ales did not change during the week and the prices had gone through the roof (I have since heard it us under new ownership). The most expensive place for cask ales on Bridge Street by far and sadly the clientele had deteriorated - whilst not the fault of the staff, I disliked drinking a pint adjacent to a couple of locals (a guess from the accent) whose every other word began with 'f'. After this, approximately half way through our visit to Berwick-upon-Tweed we did not call back. I will stick to The Curfew and Atelier on Bridge Street.
