Stopped at this lovely pub today for lunch. We had the ploughman’s and ham, egg and chips. Both were really tasty, good size portions and excellent value for money. The lady serving us was very efficient, friendly and attentive. We will definitely return on a sunny day and make use of their lovely beer garden. Also, ‘Dogs welcome with well behaved owners’ according to the sign - love it 😊

After making a booking for a Sunday lunch I took my 84 year old father to the Barley mow for a Roast dinner.on arrival we were shown to a drinks table with two arm chairs in the corridor between the entrance and the dinning area.a walk way and a busy one. I called over a waitress and expressed that this wasn't an area to eat in, the table wasn't mire than a drinks table and on sitting in the arm chairs you couldn't get your legs under the table.it wasn't suitable and could we move please. She passed to another young waiter whom told us there was no other option but to sit outside.i was told they had patio heaters but ut was an overcast day and too cold for my elderly father to sit outside.we have has birthdays and Christmas dinners as a table of 14 here before and over 10 years we have eaten here as a family alot. This day we were treated poorly and overlooked. On our way out leaving to find somewhere else to eat my father spotted the manager and told him how poor their customer service had been.with no apology we left.im not sure what they were recenawarded for but ut wasn't their customer care.

We were staying in a hotel around 5 miles away, whilst in the hotel I googled pubs in the area for food and drink and we found the Barley Mow. So glad we did! Really lovely warm atmosphere. Great choice of food on the menu and plenty of seating available even though it was super busy (Friday evening) We chose to sit outside as the weather was wonderful. When ordering food the staff did pre warn us that there would be a 45 minute wait (we were prepared to wait) food arrived exactly 45 minutes later and it was great. Husband had the deep fried halloumi and I was gutted I didn’t order the same, it looked incredible and he continued to rub this in my face, still I was happy with my Fish N Chip. We would absolutely revisit if we are in the area again. Thank you.

This is a little gem of a pub - very close to the nearby holiday park, but still a 'best-kept' secret for those of us who live nearby. It is a fabulous, olde-worlde traditional pub with some very special ales on offer. They also have a huge dining area outside - lovely furniture, umbrellas, heating ... giving you the opportunity to go glamping pub-style, if you will! Anyway - where was I - oh yes, fabulous choice of ales. They have something behind that bar to suit every taste (including exceptional tea and coffee) ... but they also still have the fabulous kitchen elves. I won't say any more about the food - you have to try it. You will thank me for it. Then, when you pay the bill ... you will thank the people that run the place. Such quality, at such reasonable prices, coupled with such lovely people - just keep this to yourselves, don't tell anyone!

Table booked we pootled along the tow path arriving at just after 12, luckily we had booked the pub was very busy, bar staff generally attentive except for one who felt that sorting glasses out was more important than someone waiting at the bar trying to grab his attention, that said once served the staff were very pleasant. We ordered drinks were shown to our table and all went for the Turkey roast Sunday dinner, the meat with two big roasties and two new potatoes arrived quickly followed by the gravy and veg, additionally cranberry sauce was obtained, the meat was prepared I suggest it was nice not too dry which is a blessing with Turkey, veg and pots nor overcooked they were just right! Lumpy gravy just like the wife makes it with the standard large yorkie pud.No complaints we polished the meal off and plumped for a dessert, mint choc chip for one two roulade and an individual lemon meringue all very nice! The cost including four drinks £87 .I think our server was Libby who apart from stopping to grab a drink was non stop lovely and attentive.

We visited on August bank holiday Monday midday ish. Situated in a quiet area off road. We sat outside where there are plenty of tables to eat. Most of the eating area is covered with lights and heaters which is a nice touch but the area was let down as the paving slabs needed a good jet wash. You could clearly see months of beer/drink stains which made it look grubby. There are also additional tables on the grass area (very large great for kids to run about in parents sight) the benches on the grass needed some attention as they were very weather worn. It’s a shame some outside areas are neglected because this place has so much potential and would be competition to The Navigation as they are over priced.

Upon first impressions pleasant pub with good beer and reasonable prices. However my wife's pie lacked a decent portion of vegetables and the pie portion was also quite small. I choose a filled baguette but the baguette itself was toasted it seemed. Hard exterior and interior filled with overcooked bacon probably from hours before. The chips were the best thing hot and freshly cooked. We are looking for another decent place to eat at on a regular basis but the Barley Mow is not such a place. No excuse for miserly portions.

Err, no, we don't wish to have a sugared drink both being diabetic. He wasn't very happy as we cancelled the order and had a drink with diet coke. My husband later told him how much sugar an ordinary small Schweppes tonic had and he was rather taken back. In this day and age with obesity at an all time high, it's a shame they aren't supporting the cut back on sugar campaign.

The menu looked quite interesting. We ordered and sat outside. When the food came I needed another drink to go with it and was stood at the bar waiting for ages to get one as there is no table service for ordering food. In terms of my meal though it was fine because when I went outside after fifteen minutes my food was still nuclear hot as it had clearly been nuked in the microwave. If the food was priced correctly I would probably return but nearly 12 pounds for this good and no service was a rip off. I can get exceptional service and fresh , better quality food at the Bell in Beauchampton for the same price. If you lowered your prices to match the food standard and lack of table service you would actually make more profits on food during the week.

Visited The Barley Mow with friends recently after enjoying a lovely cruise on their canal boat. It is a lovely pub with a lot of potential, unfortunately, the staff of just 1 or maybe 2 men taking food orders and serving drinks is not enough. They are not particularly very friendly either, and definitely don't make you feel really welcome. Putting aside the staff, the garden is lovely, and the food was very good. There was one problem though, half way through enjoying my Shepard's pie, I thought I had discovered a small bone in my mouth, until upon closer inspection I found that it was a piece of metal just over a cm in length. I called the elder of the 2 men to show him what I had just been chewing on, he took it from me and asked if I would like another meal. I would have liked an apology, but I did not get one. I said I did not want another meal, as everyone would have been long finished by the time that would have arrived. When it came to paying the bill, I was not offered any discount, I thought maybe my pudding might have been offered free as a gesture of good will, but sadly no. And still no sign of a 'Sorry'. Very disappointing, will not be going back there again.

Visited here for much-needed lunch-break after a shopping trip to Milton Keynes. Quite a surprisingly capacious place in pleasant surroundings close by the Grand Union Canal. Pretty quiet when we arrived so we were attended to promptly and had plenty of choice as to where to sit. The food we ordered came reasonably quickly and was very tasty; good 'home-made' pub food rather than the sort often found in chain pubs. We only had one issue which was that not long after we sat down, music was turned on and we realised that it would be hard to get away from a speaker. Given the limited clientele present and the fact that we were mostly from 'the grey brigade' it was too loud and unsuitable and seemed most unnecessary when most were there for conversation. To give staff their due, when my wife raised the matter they did switch it off and we were able to enjoy our meal and conversation in peace. By the time we left, the pub had filled up quite a bit and had a nice buzz of conversation proving that the music just isn't needed to make the place an attractive venue. There are very pleasant walks along the canal close by.

In the heart of Cosgrove, this pub is well-placed for the end of a country walk (with or without dogs)! We often meet friends here walk along the canal and back through the village to end with a drink and/or lunch back at the pub. Dogs are made welcome, with the staff often giving them a bit of fuss. The Owner always has a smile for you and is very accommodating, we even had to have dinner on the run once and they made sure we got our food and bill quickly! Look for the fun quotes on the wall, it sums this place up :)

On the 1st May we went to a great pub on the grand Union canal . Great food , lovely staff , and great atmosphere . It was very busy , and so one does except there will be a delay . That was OK by us as we hadn't booked , and got our food within a half hour of ordering . We were sat next to a table that had a family on it , which the children were very misbehaved, I blame the parents for this . It wasn't the fault of the pub . The adults also were very rude unto the staff , well the younger adults , whom I guess we're in charge of the children . But that's really going of on a tangent , this is a great find , yes it got and was busy , but that shows you how popular it is . Only wish we had a pub like this in my neck of the woods .

We went for a family meal here. The service was terrible. The food portions were small. When asked about a homemade dessert they said they had to look on box?!?! We were also over charged and ignored a lot of the time as the staff seemed more interested in people they knew. Would definitely not go back!!

For a pub the food portions tend to be a little mean, a few more chips wouldn't hurt or break the bank and the menu choices always look good but in reality and for the price you pay what you're served is generally underwhelming. Landlord could do with being friendlier (locals included) Nice location though.

This was a halfway meeting point for us and our 2 children to meet 2 family members for Sunday lunch.Nicely decorated pub with lots of space between tables and a nice atmosphere. Bonus that dogs are allowed.Customer service was average. Very grumpy barman, were only given 2 menus for 5 people and specials not mentioned. Our waitress was pretty quiet and subdued. Food was average for quality and price. £5 salad starter consisted of some very bitter walnuts, unwashed chemical-tasting leaves and pears straight from the tin, no dressing.Mains consisted of oven chips small portions of meat & veg.Deserts nothing special.Wouldn't bother going again.

This is a good pub to visit after a walk along the canal, or just to drive to. A warm and attractive and country pub interior with excellent home made food served cheerfully and without too much of a wait. Would definitely return!

Managed to tie up alongside the pub after hearing live music coming from the garden. What a top spot. The band played Pink Floyd all afternoon . The beer was excellent , the staff friendly and the pub has a cosy feel to it. We eventually ordered food . The fish pie was good and my steak and chips average - the chips were pale and my steak gristly. This won't stop me returning but why do so many kitchens fail to do good chips? It's not rocket science , although for some kitchens it seems to be . Do great chips and they will come.

I am really not sure about the 4 and 5 star ratings, arrived at 2:15 for Sunday lunch to be told all the "roast" dinners had gone (in fairness we did not book for lunch). Instead we had something from the regular lunch menu, which was OK, chips were a little cold and the gammon a little overdone. All pretty average stuff really, and not all that great VFM, at £27 for 2 x Gammon and chips and two alcoholic drinks.

A very lovely place to go for a great meal. Did want the lamb pudding however they had run out :(, but gunna get the low down on that as my rents went back there to have it :)

We chose to visit here based on previous reviews and we weren't disappointed. Food was good pub grub. The food was nice and hot when served. Good price. And wait time was perfect. Nice and clean. Was hoping to have beer in pub garden but the weather put a stop to that. But they did have a singer on which was a nice surprise. Would visit again if in area.

Having read previous reviews of this Pub, I was not disappointed at all. Excellent phone manner when reserving a table and happy to accommodate to my requirements, thanks Hillary. When driving over missed it, as you can't see it from the village road which is good once you get to the Pub as it's quiet and like "a stones throw away"from the canal.Once in the village it's the first turning on the right where the play ground is. Even though it has a T sign on the road ignore that and a little ways down its in the left.Nice size outside eating area, inside is spacious and plenty of seating. Although I would recommend booking just in case as it can get busy. Lots of good beers and guest ales and a plus for me as I was able to have Stowford Press.Food: the best whitebait I've had in ages which I shared with my boyfriend. The big selling point was the roast dinner. When I called to reserve my table I asked what the roasts were. Once Hillary said "a half roast chicken, " I was intrigued. We were not disappointed. Half a fresh Chicken, a large fluffy Yorkshire pudding, roasties and seasonal veg and gravy that actually looked and tasted like my mum's. I had the Pork, well cooked, actual crackling that crunched and you could bite and not worry about loosing any teeth in the process. All the food is cooked by Margo and Hillary which is why I think it tasted so good to coin Hillarys phrase "we're not chef's, we're cooks." That they are.☺Service: The bulk of the serving staff are young locals, but they all have an excellent team spirit down to the Manager's training. Quick, friendly and happy to help especially in getting extra "Gravy!"Atmosphere: Locals, outsiders and canal folk. The Pub does charity raising for local needs. Including this weekend which was for a defibrillator for the Pub. Which seems a weird item. But when you consider the local environment it actually makes sense. There was a raffle and they asked me to pick the number. Which was nice to be included as it was our first visit. We will definitely be returning.Keep up the good work and table 7 was perfect for us.☺

We`d just finished a Croughton circular walk, and needed "refreshment" afterwards. One of the locals said hello as we walked in. Staff were friendly, and there was Tribute, Wainwrights and Directors on tap. I went for the Directors, which was very good. The menu was on the wall, and was varied, lots of it homemade, and great value for money. Sadly, we`re quite a drive away, otherwise it would be become my local. Note to self: have a meal BEFORE going on Croughton circular walk.

We would like to thank you for kindly letting us order a meal after the kitchen had officially closed. It must have been a long and busy day, but you still accommodated us. It was very generous of you both! Our roast dinner was lovely. My headache went! We would like to wish you a very successful future together.

Luckily, we ordered our Sunday lunch a couple of days ago when the table was booked. It's a very popular pub for food so you need to plan ahead or you could be a little disappointed as they sell out very quickly. Food, as always, was very good staff very friendly, we will use again.

Been several times over the last 12 months. Probably one breakfast was a bit lacking otherwise really good and great value. Atmosphere is 3 stars. Sometime it’s full of great people, but sometimes you get a number of pretentious people who feel they need the room to hear their opinions.

Our first visit here and we were pleasantly surprised. A lovely atmosphere, real cosy country pub which is a rarity to find these days. We both thoroughly enjoyed the main course exactly what you would expect. What lacked ever so slightly was the service, the minute you asked someone over they were polite and friendly, and they got what you needed, but what we would have liked was a little more attention, in other words, why not pop over and see us first? Check in and see if we need anything before we call you? This is more a training issue, awareness of your customer and could be easily addressed. It was not busy, and even if it was is that an excuse? Tweek this and it would be spot on 5 stars. Will we go back, definitely.
