Excellent food in very generous portions. Friendly, helpful staff. Definitely worth a visit. Highly recommended 👌

We ordered a bitter shandy and a large glass of wine. Once we added a bag of crisps it was £18.50….. Even with increasing costs this seems a bit steep compared with other local riverside pubs.

Very dark and dingy looking. Cramped on a long table near the door which obviously keeps opening for people to come in, loads of space elsewhere, but was also reserved for a function. Food was ok, nothing spectacular that if you could see what you were eating.Torch needed too.

A lovely pub alongside the river with a lovely varied pub menu and very good prices.

Lovely atmosphere, and although fairly busy, you can usually just turn up and get a table without booking. We had jacket potato, one with bacon and Stilton and the other with luscious, tasty prawns in sauce.

Generous portions at a good price. Gluten free options and a good awareness of “may contain” problem. Locally sourced ingredients are featured as much as possible.

This by far a very respectable and family friendly pub. The service was amazing and the bar staff was very knowledgeable. A great pub to visit when on a day trip to the Isle of Wight Newport

The Bargemans Rest is our go-to pub for food when on a cycle trip to the IOW. The food and service has always been excellent and good value. Highly recommend.

Really nice dishes with good variety, the menu is versatile consists of vegetarian as well as vegan options are available. Value for money. I tried fish pie, steak etc

Great portions, a nice place to visit

Fabulous pub. Great, friendly staff who order a taxi for you if necessary. fabulous night out with friends this is an old school pub where they keep the beer well and pour a good pint. Decor in the pub is excellent and whilst it was busy both nights we visited, the lighting and the way the tables were arranged meant you are not really aware of others around you. We had a really good couple of nights there and it's just a shame it's not on the mainland where we live !! Thanks

Although Karl Marx and I share common links in that many of our life experiences were shaped in the slums (Karl) and suburbs (me) of the fine cotton manufacturing city of Manchester,many of his teachings are deeply flawed philosophically. He redeems himself in his description of the Isle of Wight as “This island is a little paradise” I agree ☝️. And this huge but homely Newport boozer epitomises that description. Welcoming staff on the harbour edge and even early on a weekday a friendly buzz of families ,work colleagues and tentative tinder hook ups. I had left my older wife at home as she has housemaids knee after scrubbing the patio. Such absence can make me sad but today I could totally forget her. I will bring her one day God willing Food smelled lovely but I had already had egg sandwich in the car .

The food was extremely tough , people were smoking inside whilst staff did nothing about it (we had to move tables 😡) , And the place looked dirty ....

For Pub grub, it was ok. Service was good. There were 25 of us, and we were all served hot food

Friday night family meal. Great atmosphere with the live music and the lamb shank off the specials menu was brilliant. Very generous portion in general but highlight for me was the amount of gravy - usually I have to ask for extra in restaurants so I was very happy. The gravy alone made the meal worthy of a 5 star review in of itself!

A very unique, quirky little pub. It's decor was very uniquely maritime, different and had history which we liked. We just had drinks and a Sunday which were all nice and staff were accommodating.

Fabulous looking interior, great food as always, lovely staff, but... and the reason i am writing this review, the music was absolutley awful, the fact there is speakers by most tables there was no escaping it... I went to the bar asked if they can change the music, gave some advise like Indie folk or something, but they told me they have no control over the music and cannot change it, ONLY the owner can who was not there. This is bizarre that their is not choices, they were playing something most odd maybe mexican, i dont know but i heard other people also commenting negatively, to be honest it kind of ruined our experience. Come on OWNER sort this out, there needs to be a wider choice for the staff to control, whatever was playing was literally pitiful and awful and ruined the entire atmosphere. Please listen to your customers and staff, they are who matter.

Our first visit to the Bargeman's Rest last night when staying overnight in the town to mark my husband's birthday. What a super pub, right on the river and full of character. The menu was extensive with plenty of choice for all tastes. We chose the Beef Lasagne and Chicken Caesar respectively and both were lovely, nice large portions and good value. Good selection of wines - the Chilean Sauvignon was excellent. Unfortunately, our hope of a quiet evening meal was somewhat marred by a group of narcissists (almost certainly locals) sitting in our area, who thought it appropriate to have a zoom call with one of their friends using their phone on loud speak which we had to endure for at least 10-15 minutes. Such was the raucous racket coming from said group, the pub could not have been unaware of it and that it might be disturbing their other customers. I feel compelled to mention this in my review of the pub as they they are responsible for the conduct of people on their premises.

Warm welcome. Clean. Good food and big portions. Lots to chose from and special boards too. Nice atmosphere. Attentive waitress.

Excellent pub with some amazing food, the servers were happy and always had a smile, will visit again on our next trip :)

If i could give 100 stars i would! Going out for any sort of meal can be a stressful occasion for Arthur, especially on days where he just isnt feeling up for it. I will never get used to the staring, whispers, eye rolls and headshakes from some when Arthur is having a meltdown. We went back to @thebargemansrest for dinner tonight having booked a table this afternoon and having been yesterday evening for dinner. This note from the manager was a lovely message for Arthur plus for me as Arthur’s mum. Its an unbelievable message of sen acceptance from them and they have customers for life with us. Thank you to Steve - you made my day and the usual unease of going out for dinner disappeared. Unsurprisingly Arthur ate all his dinner and had a lovely time, as did we all.

Excellent location. Good selection of Real Ales including Ringwood 49er. Great atmosphere with friendly and polite staff. The food was excellent and well presented. Overall good value for the money. Lovely pub to relax and enjoy in.

Can never fault Bargemans. Always very consistent. Portion sizes always a plus! It’s great able to book a table now as is often very busy.

A great place to go! Convenient parking right outside and then comfy chairs and fantastic seasonal decorations created a good atmosphere. Me and a large group went for lunch to celebrate a birthday and after ordering food arrived promptly and to a great standard. Food was all hot and well cooked and my Farmhouse Burger was honestly one of the best burgers I have ever eaten. I also ordered a sundae but as both main and desert helpings were large I could not finish the sundae despite it being very tasty. Servers were also friendly leading to a brilliant eating experience. Thanks to all involved at the pub for making a perfect birthday lunch. We will definitely be returning!

Hadn't been here for a few years, but our works do for Christmas was held here (21 people) and honestly the food was faultless, not a single one of us had a complaint. EVERYTHING was brought out in a timely manner and there were multiple requests for different foods. I believe 3 to 4 people asked for steaks, and all were cooked exactly as requested. Because the food was so good for Christmas we decided to have a family meal here (8 people) and again not a single complaint to be had, all food was again brought out in a timely manner and it was all cooked to perfection. 100% recommend. A lovely atmospheric pub overlooking the Marina in Newport. Friendly staff. Decorated nicely for Christmas. Lots of space inside and out with view of the water. Large and interesting menu with a specials board and a tapas board. We went for a lunch and then a dinner new years eve. Good choice both times. Easy to get to from centre of Newport and there is some parking out front. Well worth a try if visiting the IOW.

I'm convinced that whoever works in the kitchens at the Bargemans has a problem with vegetarians. For the second time in two months I was was given a meal that was nothing like what was described on the menu. "Spicy bean burgers smothered in tomato sauce and melted mozzarella" was actually two bean burgers with a spoonful of tomato sauce which had soaked into the bun and a little bit of half melted mozzarella underneath. I had less chips than everyone else as well. It looked like a kids meal. All for £16! It was apalling. A complete rip off and very disappointing. Especially as the rest of our group had amazing meals that were presented beautifully. I won't be eating there again.

Not what it was ordered a gammon steak,, chips peas. The meal was swimming in oil. Not impressed

The bargemans was always a place to go for a great pub meal with epic portions. The last 2 times I've been I've ended up with a sicky tummy the day after. Then the final visit I tried a carbonara and it was like a mushroom and white wine pasta- definitely nothing carbonara about it. For the price, you can get much better elsewhere. We've made it a rule now to visit for drinks on doggy walks, but we won't eat here again until the food improves. Staff are wonderful though and it's a great spot for drinks in the summertime next to the river.

I ordered the Texan Bean Chilli from the vegetarian section of the main menu. I was given the Texan Chilli from the meat section of the main menu. I brought this to the attention of the staff member called Steve. He insisted it was my fault and that I had ordered it wrong, despite specifying that I am vegetarian when I ordered it. I have been vegetarian for over 30 years. I understand that people make mistakes but it is disgraceful to pass the blame back onto the customer when the staff get it wrong. I was eventually refunded but lost my appetite, so I left hungry and angry. I will never eat there again.

Visited today, good quality food with generous portions. Between us we had a fish pie, southern fried Burger, Vegan Burger and jacket potato. Hot and satisfying.

We visited for our daughters birthday. Everyone had a nice meal but mine was not great. I had the falafel baguette with chips. The chips were lovely but the baguette was so bland. Five falafel on some beetroot and onion and a thin layer of houmous on the top underside of the baguette that had soaked into the bread. Not worth the 10+ quid it cost at all. Next time maybe serve the houmous in a pot.

Food always good, my only gripe is the tables by the food ordering station, you can't sit properly because of leg room between chair and table.

We have loved the Bargeman's Rest for over 20 years. So much, that we often visit multiple times whilst on the Isle of Wight. The prices can be a little high, but the quality of food is excellent, there's a meal for everyone to choose from, and the staff are welcoming and helpful. The inside is really different to other restaurants and worth visiting. The Famhouse Burger and Garlic Butterfly Chicken are our favourites!

Arrived on a wet Monday afternoon. The interior feels so welcoming. Food was amazing, the best fish and chips I've eaten . Will definitely be returning. Would highly recommend it to anyone visiting the area or any locals who haven't yet been

My daughter's Burger was excellent, unfortunately my potato wedges with cheese and bacon was very stodgy, I had expected the cheese to be like a cheese sauce, hence only a 3 star rating

Very popular local pub full of locals and (clearly) regulars. We (3) visited on a Sunday lunchtime but didn't need a full roast dinner, so just ordered the special firecracker chicken noodles (delicious!), ploughman's lunch (huge portion!) and Cheese sandwich (fab and served with the most delicious chips). Truly excellent, but booking is a must. We used the App they have to order and it worked well. Highly recommended.

The food was lovely, the staff were lovely and overall it was a great experience. I have been there a few times and all of those times have been perfect. My whole family loves to go there

the bargeman's rest is a beautiful example of a proper pub. staff are always pleasant and you are able to talk to them at ease, and the food is always amazing and made with great attention to detail and care. one of my favourite places to come for a classic meal. absolutely delightful.

Sunday roast was really good. Awesome selection of non-alcoholic beers!

We had a nice lunch here. Wheelchair and dog friendly. Staff were friendly and helpful. A choice of outside dining with a riverside view, or indoors with loads of interesting nautical memorabilia to look at. Hopefully we'll be back soon!

We came here for lunch and what a really good find, tucked away down by the river Medina in Newport. Good choice of meals and drinks. Polite staff and prompt service. meals arrived correct and hot and were lovely, will definitely visit here again next time we are on the island. ow one more thing they are dog friendly as our Akita, Bella can testify to.

This is a lovely pub - great location and a good choice of beers. Above all there is excellent customer service - I accidentally lost my wallet there on a recent visit. Not only did they find and look after my wallet for me, but they even swiftly posted it back to me on the mainland, keeping me updated throughout, which goes above and beyond. I'll definitely be in for a pint on my next visit to Newport.

I love it because it has a family area and a quieter area, although depending on occupancy everything may mix together but it is a good idea. The food is very delicious and in good quantity, sometimes the appetizer is more of a main course! The site is magnificent with views of the Medina River. It has a blackboard with the daily specials, I highly recommend looking at it before seeing the menu. The only drawback is that it doesn't have much parking so you will have to go to the paid parking lot about 100 meters away. The staff is very kind and friendly. We love going there for dinner

Pre booked the table, as it was the Classic car show weekend and wanted to make sure we got a table, rang up and not a problem booking, I know dogs are allowed but I wanted to make sure they knew we were bringing a dog. Arrived and was shown to our table very quickly by a nice gentleman. Good variety on the menu, we placed our order and the food came very quickly. It was hot and nice. We did not go for a pudding as all we could see on offer was an ice cream menu. If there were other puddings on offer we did not see a menu or specials board. Other than that a wonderful lunch with our dog and we will be back when we are back in Newport.

Ate at the Bargeman's Rest with a large group of friends. Table booked for 7.30. We arrived before then. Ordered our starters and mains. Lovely food and super generous portions. When it came to ordering dessert however we were told that the kitchen had closed and nothing was available. It wasn't late by any means. This was very annoying, and I feel it's pretty unprofessional to not at least come and tell your diners that if they wanted anything else then it needed to be ordered as the kitchen was closing. Having spent a lot of money and been seated at 7.30 you'd expect to be able to enjoy a 3 course meal......or be told if you couldn't. A great pity as it spoilt an evening which was otherwise enjoyable.

A great lunch at this quayside pub. I recommend the homemade chicken/bacon pie. The sausage and mash was very good too. Really friendly and thoughtfully run. Most interesting decoration with all things nautical. Would definitely go again.

The portions are not for amateurs, and more importantly it tastes great. Their selection at the bar is decent and the staff is nice and helpful. The atmosphere is great and the nautical theme gives the pub a nice touch.

Went there on weekday to celebrate a birthday , lovely place, and nice food. Only negative point was it was very dimly lit, and being away from the windows it was hard to read the menus, one of our party even used their torch from their phone to read it ( Specsavers has nothing to do with it) overall would recommend 👍

Been to this pub for lunch half dozen or more time over the past two decades when on the island and never disappointed by food. The staff are always so friendly, attentive and accommodating which seems to be a rare skill these days. Totally recommend that you try the watering hole.

Visited most recently in a large family group for a birthday meal. The party included children teenagers and OAPS. Food was served hot and tasty and in generous portions, service was also good. My only complaint is that we were obliged to sit in the family room and it was very dark in there (and also quite cold), could do with some lighting for tables away from the windows. Otherwise great all round, we return time and again to the Bargemans for many years now as we are confident we'll have a good meal at a reasonable price.

Called in for an evening meal over the weekend, was expecting microwave pub grub, but couldn't have been further from the truth, the chicken and mushroom pie appeared to be home made and was fantastic.
