We booked. The Balcony restaurant view was over the shopping mall, ugly. Muzak inside was loud and vile. Food was disgraceful. Tiny bits of stale brown rolls from deep in the fridge, not as advertised. Scones baked yesterday, mean and dry. Tiny dishes of cream and jam. Cakes in 3/4 inch pieces, one brownie bit, one almond bit, one macaroon. No lactose free milk. No soy milk. One breakfast tea type or 5 herbal infusions. A mean stale unsatisfying tea. Service slow. This tiny, stale, nasty tea cost £25 a head. Value about £4 a head. Disgusted. This was a big family outing that was distressing in its failure. Do not go there.

Couldn't understand why the place was so quiet on a Saturday lunchtime. Now I do. The staff very disinterested took far too long to serve us I was just getting up to leave when they finally took our order. Food tasty but very overpriced. Drinks expensive too. Have no issue paying a premium for a premium experience. We went for a treat and came away so disappointed. Won't be rushing back. Passed by Fizz in Grand Central which was buzzing. We visited as part of Birmingham Cocktail Weekend, where each participating venue provides wristband holders with a signature cocktail for a set price. Less than half way into the weekend the venue had run out of the signature drink, and were instead offered a G&T using cheap Beefeater gin - not even a premium brand. Incredibly disappointing and lacking any imagination.

I visited with mom after visiting the back to back houses. She needed a comfortable seat and a cold drink. We were going back home on the train to from Moore Street. This place was convenient. We picked two lovely comfy chairs and we were given a drinks menu. The drinks on this were only alcoholic drinks so mom asked what soft drinks or mocktails they did. We sat back and enjoyed our drinks and the fabulous surroundings. We noticed some people were having afternoon tea. I asked if they needed to be booked they said we did not so we decided to indulge. When it come the cake stand was the shape of a tea pot really different. The small tea pot was a let down just about 1cup in it and we were not asked if we wanted a refill.Still the food cakes and scones were lovely. We finished off with a glass of wine. The staff were very good when you got there attention. they could do with a few more staff I think. I will visit again although it was quite expensive. Again the bill was presented with a service charge to my annoyance. But again I paid it as the service was good.

Located on the 4th floor of Selfridges, The Balcony is a cosy and secluded restaurant/bar that overlooks the Bullring Shopping centre. The décor is what I like to call minimalistic luxe with a dash of chic. I had a couple of Pornstar Martinis. Now, I'm not an extremely picky person but when it comes to my Pornstar, I like it fruity with alcoholic undertones. Many places go overboard with the alcohol or water it down to the extent where I might as well be drinking squash. The bartender here had it on point. It was undeniably satisfying and to make things even better it had a drizzle of vanilla pods on top. Service was swift and the staff were very friendly with good banter. Overall, The Balcony is a nice place to go when you want relax and unwind after a stressful day and I will most definitely come back when I am next in Birmingham. 10/10

Booked here for an afternoon tea with friends for a special occasion. I'll start with a positive, which is the staff. They are lovely. For £22 each we had some limp sandwiches, a scone each ( they were the best part of the whole thing, still warm), a chocolate fondant thing, battenburg slice, a lemon thingy and a macaron. I love macarons, this was the wrong texture. Yellow, but I couldn't tell you what flavour it was. Lemon? Vanilla? Butterscotch? No idea. Tea and coffee should have been included and topped up, but it isn't. We had champagne, this was good champagne and so,it should be. Service was added on without warning, so £30 each. Way, way too expensive for what it was. Will not return

This is a very mixed review. I took my best friend here for her 22nd birthday. Prior to this I spoke to a lovely man called Robert who was very helpful, as my friend is allergic to nuts, he was very accommodating. The man who served us today was lovely, couldn't have asked for a more friendly, happy, lovely person and we would have left a tip but he'd left before we did. Service and the place was wonderful. The food was lovely. My only complaint is that on all the reviews I have seen on here, instagram and Facebook they got 2 scones each and it cost £28 which the man who I was emailing also told me it was £28, however it was £30pp (which he told me before he brought the food over to me) so it cost me more than I was expecting, when I went to pay it cost £66 so unsure where that extra £6 came from as I can not find the receipt now. But adding to all this we actually got 1 scone each well 1 plain and 1 sultana, so we had to half both. So less food but more money?? I also think the hat box that they had before (the orange box) looks a lot nicer for Selfridges, don't get be wrong the teapot is lovely but I do prefer the hat box presentation. I would return just not sure I'd return for an afternoon tea due to what you get for your money. The place is beautiful though and the member of staff was so so lovely, I wish we could have got his name so he would get praised for his service as I know we were difficult customers due to my friends nut allergy.

Decided to take my mum for an afternoon tea with some Selfridges vouchers I had. The Balcony is a nice area and not too noisy in the busy Bullring. My only negatives are that it was very warm where we were and some of the decor is slightly tired but still a relaxing area to sit. The food was delicious- tasty finger sandwiches, warm freshly cooked scones and lots of sweet treats. I had seen some complaints about not enough sandwiches but we found them just enough. The staff were really attentive although it wasn't very busy on a Tuesday afternoon. Although they don't do unlimited tea, the tea is topped up with fresh hot water. Will definitely go back.

One look in the Balcony and you might be forgiven for thinking 'nice place for a drink, but food I am not sure'. Looks can be deceiving ... The Balcony has a seasonal well thought out menu with plenty of choice. There are some classics like their own version of fish and chips and some unusual salad combo's which i can fully recommend trying. Recently, they have really upped the level on their suppliers so when you order the Artisan Charcuterie board it really has English cured ham and not some cheap copy. On the last occasion i ordered their pea and ham terrine followed by Salmon fishcakes with tartar sauce. The terrine was coarse, full of flavour and well seasoned. The puree was the perfect combination especially considering their were peas in the actual terrine. Nice idea. The fish cakes were surprisingly light, a lovely salmon flavour but not overpowering. They were lovely and crisp on the outside. Upon enquiring I was informed that they were finished under the grill not in a deep fat fryer. This is a much better idea than having to digest all that heavy oil in a normal restaurant. It has to be mentioned that the service is above average and they have obviously been very well trained in how the dishes are prepared. They were also very competent when asked about wine pairings for the dishes i chose. In conclusion, if you want to go to the Balcony for a glass of champagne as many people do, why not? Nice location. However, if you want to eat well thought out, well sourced and well prepared meals .... you won't be disappointed ........

To be fair the manager did take them away & replace scones & cakes nice.. but we did feel like we're being a pain asking for finger sandwich was too much hassle for the chef! I believe the French lady who always acknowledges and at times serves us maybe the manager/supervisor - she runs a tight ship with a happy team. There is a waiter called Jayden who is extremely engaging and always wears a smile. Whenever we shop in Birmingham city centre we always choose the balcony to eat and drink as the food is also consistently good along with the great service. We look forward to our next visit Pauline and Gary

Located on the 4th floor of Selfridges, with balcony views over the Bullring - this stylish bar and restaurant is a solid 'pitstop' choice for a cocktail, glass of champagne or lunch.A small queue on arrival without eye contact or a welcome didn't give off great first impressions. There were more than enough staff and management, in my opinion. After being seated, orders were taken in good time and everything subsequently was served in equally good time. For anyone who knows me, they know that I have no objection to the price of eating and drinking out, and generally having a 'sociable' time. However, I do feel that the price of fizz and cocktails do not necessarily reflect the trend in the city centre, nor the quality of up and coming cocktail bars that are taking Birmingham by storm. The food was very good - not excellent, but well-presented and very enjoyable. The service, for the venue and prices, needs to be improved in areas. In addition to what I mentioned about the arrival, the waiting staff we encountered we're not warm or overly refined. My one glass of champagne as slightly spilt on the tray, above my purchases, and no apology was made, the glass was not topped up and the dripping glass was simply left for me to 'enjoy'.Some areas to work upon to ensure that this isn't simply a glossy venue to be seen at. Happy to give it another go next time I'm in the area.

We were shown to a table on the balcony overlooking the shopping mall, and a delicious selection of finger sandwiches, scones, cakes and pastries was innovativly served from a hatbox. We were served by Ituna who provided excellent customer service, enhancing our experience, and making our birthday treat extra special. We were also surprised by a birthday cake platter with piped birthday greeting. A memorable occasion to treasure.

We had a lovely table overlooking the Bull Ring. The tea come in a box, with layers for each of the items. There were only two sandwiches and a roll each, which I thought was a bit stingy. Two lovely scones each and a selection of cakes and pastries. Service good, although I did need to ask for some more hot water to top up the tea pot. We left full but not stuffed, which was good. When you are expected to pay £10.50 for a glass of prosecco you assume you are paying, partly, for the service. While I wouldn't not recommend this place as the foo was lovely, so were the drinks and atmosphere, the service was not so. When my beer arrived the glass was hot with water in the bottom (assuming out the dishwasher with dishwasher juice in it) and when our food arrived we asked for mayonnaise with the chips and this, without acknowledgement, was dug out from a grubby apron and thrown onto the table. I say thrown as it hit the table slid across and hit my glass. When plates were put down knives and forks were pushed aside, no mention of is everything okay. Perhaps I'm being picky however when eating in somewhere like Selfridges, where you pay a premium to be there, you expect exceptional service. Even if the service was average I'd have rated this 4/5 however as it was poor a 3 it all I am able to award. Couldn't fault the food however, this was delicious.

Three friends lunched in this restaurant after a visit to the Christmas Market. We'd been a bit disappointed with the market which seems to have reduced in size and suffers from having a messy construction project that divides it in half. We were soon relaxed in The Balcony in Selfridges. The service was friendly and attentive if a little disorganised (e.g. being asked the same questions by three servers) but the food we chose was delicious and well presented. Most of all we really liked the table layout which allowed the guests in this busy place to have animated conversations without intruding upon each other. We left well relaxed. Will definitely make a return visit to experience again this welcoming and relaxing atmosphere.

My wife and I decided to sit there for a light lunch during our shopping at Selfridges, seduced by the really beautiful design and style of the place. My wife was on her 9th post surgery day. We were met by a stone-faced lady who, after a quick up and down eye scan of both me and my wife, she asked if we were there for drinks or to dine. I know this is a typical question you get right at the entrance, but perhaps the manner with which it is directed to innocent people, should change a little bit? What if I get hungry while I'm there? Will you change tables for me mid-drink? Well, I answered, perhaps we will have a light lunch. She scanned us again, did not approve, and she directed us to a high chair little table, in a virtually empty restaurant, full of comfortable arms chairs and wider tables. At this moment I became very concerned if my wife could handle the high chair, so I asked if there is anything else available. She remained silent and stared right at me. I think a safe bet would be "NO". I looked at my wife, wondering whether is was just me that was finding all this process terribly rude but she signaled me "I'm fine". None of us wanted to share the personal information about my wife's post surgery condition to that person, so we obediently followed. The drinks were good, and I can't say if they were excellent or just decent, because the awful service's bad taste in our mouths lingered long enough to not be able to appreciate much in there. Seriously, and this goes to all the managers of hotels and restaurants: don't you care if your employees are rude to your customers, hence compromising you and your business? Don't you want your customers to ever return to your establishment, in which you have invested time and energy and lots and lots of money? And especially now, that customers can actually go on line (within seconds even, through their phones!) and leave a scorching review of your establishment? This is truly beyond my understanding. We will of course never visit this restaurant again, and it's a real pity because we liked both the ambiance and whatever was served to us.

Came here with my wife for a champagne break whilst we was shopping and before we knew it, it was 2 bottles and 3 hours later. The view overlooking the balcony is fantastic. Excellent service from our waitress olita, who suggested great champagne with some nibbles, even on a mayhem day with a dodgy signal on the card machine,. Will definitely be re visiting!

Stopped here for a drink whilst shopping with the wife. It's located on the fourth floor of selfridges and has good views overlooking the shopping centre. It's a nice location to get away from the shops but wouldn't say it's the most amazing bar, there are certainly many better in Birmingham. We only had drinks so can't comment on the food but saw some of the food being served and it looked pretty good.

I can't speak for the food, as we only have drinks here whilst shopping in Birmingham. The drinks are delightful, and certainly recommended if you just want that little break from shopping. The interior is very cosy, with great views over the Bullring if you're lucky enough to get a table next to the balcony edge. The only downside here is the discretionary service charge which is added to the bill, so just watch out. Apart from that, definitely recommended.

First time at The Balcony Bar & Brasserie and enjoyed the whole experience. The ambiance, the food and in particular the standard of service we received were top notch. The lady from Liverpool who looked after us was totally charming and could teach many other restaurants a thing or two about customer service. We ended up staying for much longer than we had planned. Well done guys, you've got it right!

Firstly - absolutely stunning food. I had the Salmon, granary bread and scrambled egg brunch and it was first class. I did enjoy my experience though when I was showed to my table and asked to order - everything was whisked away before I had a chance to order any drink bar water. It was fine as I didn't hugely want anything else - though I might have had a cup of tea! It did feel like I was a little rushed as I was eating on my own(even though it wasn't busy). However - the above sounds much more snarky than I want it too - I did love my food & I would definitely visit again - I think at the end of half term - any waitress is beginning to want everyone to go home so she can rock back and forth in the corner - kudos to you guys - you work in a busy popular place & on the whole are fab!

Not the first time here but similar service as always. Bored looking staff who aren't very attentive. Poor cocktails lacking any flair or excitement. Drinks took a long time to arrive. Martini was just vodka in a glass. Glass of coke took more than 15 minutes during quiet time.

Afternoon tea is worth every penny in my opinion. Great service, too!Only negatives were; Not enough room on table for the afternoon Tea. Slightly cramped!Only 1 portion of jam and cream for 4 scones, so not enough. However, they did provide more when requested (for free), so that makes up for that! The refills on the drinks are superb as they have so much options and you can change as many times as you want! The atmosphere is very chilled and happy, so go and enjoy!

This place is within Selfridges and overlooks the shopping mall - definitely upmarket and a proper restaurant vs a café. Great décor, comfortable seating - lovely bar area. Feel of quiet sophistication. My mom and I both had steak and chips - was the best steak I had had for years and the chips were good too. Service attentive and discreet.Overall a great place to take my mom for a special lunch.

For my birthday my granddaughter purchased an afternoon tea for two, it arrived in what could only be discribed as a hat box, but on opening up the box it had three divisions that had an assortment of sandwiches fruit and plain scones clotted cream and jam along with an assortment of savoury fancies and profiteroles all of which was most mouth watering accompanied by endless pot of tea each. My wife mentioned we had been given the afternoon tea and they came with a plate with a small cake decorated with seasonal fresh fruit and 'happy birthday ' in chocolate writing, nice touch and much appreciated. The ambience of the Balcony is very inviting the waiting staff are all very pleasant and nothing is to much trouble. At the end we could not eat all the food so they put the remaining cakes and sandwiches in plastic containers of which was very welcome later. I fully recommend a visit it is not cheap in anyway but well worth the cost for the experience.

Came here on my daughters recommendation. After a short queue we were shown to our table and menus were brought promptly. Our choices were excellently cooked and served by the most obliging and polite Charlotte who was a wonderful. Offering complimentary teas and coffees because there were bones in my fish. Deserts were also to die for. Cannot wait for an excuse to return. Wanted Charlotte to take a tipbut she insisted that all tips had to be shared, such a shame that they can't have reward for excellent service

We visited for champagne afternoon tea and were seated at a very nice table on the balcony itself. Champagne arrived in nice modern flutes, and was described as "the cheapest" when asked by the server. Still tasty. Tea arrived in what looked like a hatbox? The smoked salmon sandwich was too lemony, as was the cheese and creme frech. The pastries were good, although not quite to our taste. Scones were good, and a nice touch to be smaller than normal. The jam could have had more substance, as you could pour it out of the pot. More liquid than jam. On receiving the bill, a 10% discretionary service charge had already been added which I had to ask to remove. If I want totip for service I will, don't tell me how much upfront.

I went to the Balcony earlier today with my Husband for a spot of lunch before going shopping, overall the service was excellent our waitress, Liz, was very polite and extremely attentive. This was our first time back in a few years and we was pleasantly surprised with the atmosphere was very relaxing and décor of the place is completely different to where we tend to go to eat. The food was well presented and the fish cakes is mouth watering would recommend them. Definitely will becoming again very soon.Thank you to all your staff for making our experience

Food is superb, must try is their pro secco on tap and breakfast.... From southern fried chicken & waffles with maple syrup to a full English breakfast. Both were delicious. We went for a sneaky champagne during out recent birthdays and anniversary, as soon as Alice (the manager) found out she made the experience extra special for us. All staff are friendly, helpful and always pleasurable to be around. Today we were served by Charlotte who was very helpful with suggestions as we couldn't decide with so much to choose from. Always well worth a visit!!

Visited The Balcony recently for afternoon tea with my mum. Overall it was very good but I've only given a rating of 4 rather than 5 as there were some things that could have been better. The food was good on the whole but the sandwiches were quite cold, like they were straight out of the fridge and there wasn't much filling in them (unlike the picture on the website which shows well filled rolls on picnic benches - perhaps this needs updating?). The scones were nice but they were quite small and there wasn't really enough jam. The cakes and macaroons were lovely. In terms of the presentation it was different to traditional afternoon tea as it came in a box which opened out and had different layers/sections. I liked this as its a bit different. The service was generally good but was a bit scarce. It was hard to get the attention of a waiter/waitress to ask for a top up of tea. Towards the end we were asked if there was anything else we wanted but by this point we'd already been there over an hour and we were ready to leave. So it would have been nice if someone had asked us this earlier on/offered to top up the tea without us having to ask. Maybe my expectations are too high after having recently been for afternoon tea at Claridges? I just think that for the price (£35 for 2) it could have been a bit better.

I cannot praise the whole experience highly enough. The food was excellent and the service was friendly and welcoming. I would definitely recommend visiting the Balcony for afternoon tea. My friend was pregnant and is also vegetarian. The waitress took extra care to check that the sandwich fillings were suitable for my friend. The presentation was clever and creative and not just the bog standard afternoon tea you might get elsewhere. This by far the most refined afternoon tea that I've eaten. So much so that I've booked to take my mom for her birthday.

We went to pub for a Sunday lunch this was a real disappointment We ordered roast beef dinner and a pork belly we ordered extra mash As it didn’t come with mashed potatoes. I ordered portion of stuffing to go With the pork as it did not come with stuffing. Ordered a small Pepsi and a tonic Water the bill came to £56 bit pricey for pub but wanted to try any way . Staff were nice enough I did ask for my pork belly to be crispy but I think they put it in deep fryer not good Beef was overdone so we did leave most of the dinner very disappointed won’t return shame as We often go out for Sunday lunch . I usually have a pudding and coffee but just felt this place is over Priced and not great .
