The Bach in Dundee City

Gorgeous place and amazing food! Ordered a coffee, biscofff milkshake, eggs on toast and beans on toast. Ate everything all while talking about just how good it was! I highly recommend this rustic stylish restaurant, it is a hidden gem! 😁

Went in for lunch, place was busy. We had burgers and desserts. Food served in baskets on paper which fell apart. All portions were very small for the price paid, especially with the bao buns. Disappointed with the cheap mayonnaise and ketchup. I had the Apple donuts for dessert which was very tasty. Chocolate brownie could have been warmed before being served.

Really good coffee, perhaps the best in Dundee. Great range on the menu. All the Kiwi classics and other NZ pieces to buy in the shop. Will definitely be back as soon as I'm back in Dundee.

Disappointing. Had the full breakfast: mostly okay but the bacon were a few pathetic overcooked strips. Pretty poor for 10 quid. But worse was being told twice we had to vacate the table (you’re only allowed 90 minutes apparently). Considering I had arranged to meet a friend I only see a few times a year this was pretty galling. The place is doing a roaring trade it seems; do you really need to harass people out?

The truffle fries were tasty but the burger was way, way overcooked and tough to eat. However, the staff is nice and the atmosphere is as well.

Huge cafe with lots of options. Not a wide choice of vegan things, but what they did have was nice. Not the cheapest, and things like toast are an additional cost on breakfasts. Staff attentive and friendly. They also allow dogs, and have some NZ treats for sale.

Had the best veggie breakfast here. My husband had the full breakfast v filling. We loved it so much we went back the 2nd day. Had the Benni’s & hash browns and Harrissa eggs. Service excellent & staff extremely friendly. Will definitely be back!

Awesome place! Not in any way pretentious, just a cool place to get some food and / or some drinks. We went for brunch, the service was spot on, the food and drinks were amazing! Superb chxiken and waffles and the unicorn milkshake was fantastic too.

Friendly staff and tasty food. Got quite busy at lunch time on the Thursday we went, so think we were lucky we arrived early to get a table. My suggestion would be to book a table to avoid disappointment.

Food is great & always tasty, staff are really great, lovely quirky place. I always recommend it! Dog friendly too! My only small grumble is depending on where you get sat at a table you might leave smelling of the kitchen, I’ve had this a few times myself & have been smelling of food all day, just a wee heads up :)

Was here this morning with my family. I was so impressed with entire experience. Setting, staff and food were all spot on. Bit of an alternative menu, but they have clearly put a lot of work in have and nailed it. Please try the daddy o bagel 🥯, so good

Nice food let down by sloppy service. My wife’s food arrived 15 minutes later than everyone else’s. We received an apology but kind of spoiled lunch. We had to ask for cutlery.

A real taste of New Zealand and feels very wholesome and welcoming. Thanks to Wendy and Steven for a good Kiwi welcome, mirrored by their staff. I'll get a Montieths next time I come!

Managers need to relax on the instructions. Staff are a bit too attentive. Constant check ups whilst trying to relax but good place overall

Lovely little place to get a coffee

The hot chocolate was decent in most qualities, consistency and richness were adequate, nothing particularly impressive or of poor quality, and the temperature was warm enough, overall chocolatiness was good, 5/10

Decent food Good service Nice environment

After being swiftly seated we were summarily ignored for over half an hour with no one taking our order. When ordering we were told they had run out of tofu, the only reason we had chosen The Bach as we needed and wanted vegetarian options.. Once we finally ordered drinks arrived ten minutes later (a pot of tea and a tin of orangeade - the orangeade was not what we ordered but we were so thirsty by this point and it had taken so long for them to serve us we just drank it).. and then the hour long wait started for our lunch. Drinks finished and we were still waiting. A member of staff eventually came up to apologise and we waited another fifteen minutes. The veg burger was luke warm, the chips were roasting hot and the poached eggs on toast were literally that - two plain eggs - not runny in the middle but cold and firm, with plain dry toast. No salad. No butter or marg options.. nothing. It was quite honestly a pathetic excuse of a meal and to be charged as much as we were is an affront to even the most mild mannered of people. They couldn’t even bring themselves to ask us how our meal was when we went to pay. I think they were afraid of the answer in all honesty. I had absolutely no idea how they get such good reviews. I would NEVER go to The Bach or recommend it based on our experience. I rarely do absolutes but this is one time I am certain.

Visited for the first time on Saturday 6 January for breakfast. We both had the Son of Bach with a slice of toast each and a tea. Not the cheapest as with a tip added it came to around £40 but it was worth it. portions were huge and very tasty. Service was fine, no complaints there. Absolutely cracking tunes on the playlist.

Bach serves a really interesting niche in Dundee and it’s great to have it here. It’s a large place that feels very cutting edge. Admittedly, it’s a bit of an odd-duck in terms of product. It is somewhat New Zealand themed, welcomes large groups and has a a fun, unique menu. While I heartily recommend it, it’s not as simple as saying ‘you have to try their Kimchi fries’ or ‘their specialist filter coffee makes it worth a visit’: it’s more a combination of the food, staff, ambience and location that make this a five star location. If you’re in Dundee, especially with a larger table or want something more than muffins and sandwiches with your coffee, visit Bach.

Been here several times for lunch and coffees visiting my daughter at university. Great place for all. Central. Good coffee and fresh homemade food. Affordable and tasty.

Was really looking forward to going. My food was very average. The staff were nice but they did come over far too many times to ask if things were okay and just lingered. It was awkward then out of the blue we were told, when our coffees (post brunch) hadn't even arrives that we'd have to vacant our table in 10mins. My coffee didn't taste right, like the milk was off but they insisted it was fine and that it was down to individual tastes! It was busy and the feel of the place was positive. Toliets, like most places these days werent great. I won't be back.

Visited here for breakfast with the wife. Food was nice, service was fast and efficient, really enjoyed the homemade beans and the milkshake. Will definitely be back soon.

We were met with "we will need the table back at ##" and that set the tone for the visit. Damn but this place is overpriced.

The food here is generally pretty good, I have been numerous times and usually pretty happy with the quality and speed that the food is produced. Staff are okay, pleasant enough but nothing standout in terms of customer service. That being said... it must be the only place I have ever gone to where you cannot order a glass of water! They only let you fill-up the tiniest glass from one of the refill stations around the restaurant and will not let you have a bigger glass. As someone who only really drinks water, this is a huge put off for me going back in future. I thought I maybe had a picky server but this has happened 3 different times now. Would easily have been a 4/5 stars if this was fixed.

Food was good but service appalling - waited an hour after our plates were cleared before being asked if we’d like desert or coffee. Waitress - we were clearly an inconvenience to her and it was made apparent repeatedly

A friendly place for a lunchtime bite! Service was very good, the atmosphere good and the the prices reasonable. Coffee was very good indeed and the Roti an excellent light meal.

A lovely modern establishment with good vibes and ambience and very spacious! Service was very good. The coffee was good. I ordered the buttermilk fried chicken on a waffle. The amount of butter on the plate was staggering, all I could taste was butter and there was a big lump of unmelted butter on top, I couldn’t finish it. My friends meals looked and tasted great. I would return, but not order the chicken waffle again.

So service was excellent, they are also dog friendly and were keen to share where there was a dog water bowl. The food was good, although I found the portion size too much and it was too salty (perhaps that’s a Scottish preference tho?). Coffee was anodyne but breakfast tea was excellent.

Clean, spacious, affordable prices, good coffee

Great place to eat. Had a classic breakfast and enjoyed it. The only downside - had to wait for the waiter to pay the bill almost forever. At the end I went to the registry myself. Apart from that everything was fine, I was here twice and going to come back for sure.

Came here looking for any place that would accept dogs and found possibly the best place that I have ever had breakfast! The food is of exceptional quality and with a wonderful variety of high quality options for breakfast or lunch. Plenty of space (even with a dog) and good service from friendly staff.

Waited while people stared at us, as soon as another guest came in they seated them straight away leaving us stood there. As an autistic person I find it very hard to be in new places and this made it incredibly uncomfortable for me. I would suggest seating your guests no matter what they look like. Will not be coming here again of fear of being ignored again. Do better.

I have a bad experience with them and for sure i will never try them again , I have asked the waitress to wrap my left overs So I can take it with me ,later when i went to cashier she said I thought you said take it a way like away from the table with no apology or sorry . I guess her name was rosy .

We came here for lunch on our way to visit the V&A and had a really great experience. The food was delicious & the service was very helpful & responsive. Lovely place & highly recommend.

We love taking our dog Daphne to Bach. The food is great, the staff are great and it's very reasonably priced.

Very disappointing visit today. As you can see food was very good but they would not serve coffees at the end of the meal because our time was up and they needed the table. 90 minutes were allocated and we were still well within our booked limit. The waiter went to the manager to explain this but was told he could not serve coffees. This seems to be an issue since on a previous visit a similar issue come up but this time we were later because our main course was delivered to the table late for which they apologised. Despite this being their fault we were still asked to leave without further service. Pity since we meet there as a family throughout the year. No we wont be bach again.

First time here and enjoyed the experience. Café has a nice vibe to it ,the staff all seemed friendly. Liked the fact that it was dog friendly and bowls provided for the pouch. Menu was posh and geared up to the hip young university crowds. The portions and price was what we expected for the market they are looking to attract. Drinks range was good and I enjoyed the cha tea and the katsu curry with the fries and chicken

Such a lovely spot on the edge of Dundee City center! Lots of seats, so many food and drink options and really warm and friendly atmosphere.

Lovely spacious environment and efficient service. Ordered smashed avocado with poached egg, tasty enough but only one thin slice of toast and for £9 would have expected more. Nice enough coffee but left still feeling hungry! :((

Oh my word - this place is amazing - and the portion sizes are bang on. Chilli beef on toast is my fave brunch item, along with a lightly roasted drip pour. They've modified the menu a little and have added (or I've just noticed) banh mi. The dirty cheese burger looked small but was really filling, and the portion of fries could have easily fed four. Just been in October 2023 and noticed they have chicken and waffles - crispiness works well with the buttery sweetness. Also, a wasp flew into our milkshake and it was replaced no question asked - did I mention the milkshakes are great too?!

Amazing food. Such a good selection! Also lots of interesting drink options. We came for brunch and had the tiramisu French toast and the full breakfast. So tasty! They have a kids menu and high chairs, and are dog friendly. Lots of seating but you can and should pre-book online if coming at peak times.

Good burgers, lovely selection of beers and friendly staff.

The food stated with an offensive attempt at shakshuka with raw unseasoned tinned tomatoes topped with underdone eggs, wet white and all. The “warm salad” consisted of lazily chopped, undercooked butternut squash plopped on an upsettingly small portion of wilted spinach. The few other components of this alleged salad were made up of a total of three cherry tomatoes and chunks of pickled beetroot that were mummified beyond recognition. The hummus was the best part and even that was lumpy. Sad attempt at what could’ve been some very nice food had anyone in the kitchen actually known how to cook. They also have the audacity to have an automatic tip when customers are made to serve themselves their own tepid water from a communal dispenser. One of the toilets was blocked and the bathrooms were clearly not regularly looked after - especially unacceptable for how early on in the day we attended. A real miracle this place is still in business.

The decor of this place may be simple, but don't let that fool you: this place does some of the best coffee and brunches that you will find in Dundee or anywhere nearby for that matter. And everything they do has a New Zealand style twist, which really adds something different! Their staff are very friendly and willing to help, and their space is used for everything from yoga classes to simply coffee with your friends. Their prices are also very reasonable considering the quality of the food served. Well recommended. Update 2021: they have stopped doing good coffee choices, sadly, for which I've removed a star. Updated 2023: still no sign of the return of the good coffee, despite it being promised repeatedly during COVID. We still hold out hope for the return of the best coffee in Dundee, but for now it's only filter brewed 😬 When they bring back v60 and siphon coffee, I will bring back my stars and I'll visit a lot more often.

Expensive. Well presented and well cooked. Flavoursome. Black pudding and baked beans were awesome. So so toast and bacon. Very dark flavours; tasty but didn’t quite work for me. Friend has scrambled eggs (she liked) and an espresso (too sour and she detested it).

Love the NZ theme. The staff are wonderfully welcoming and helpful. I had the Turkish eggs (which were delicious) & the blackfish tacos (which were tasty but quite spicy).

From its beginnings in Exchange court in Dundee I’ve wanted to like it. Food has always been good. Now they don’t do any cakes or tray bakes for coffee mid morning or afternoons. The coffee whether it is espresso based or filter is consistently poor. No taster or quality control and the staff have unfortunately been left to just do the job and not pay attention to quality of drinks. The water dispensers are starting to taint the drinking water. Metallic and chlorinated.

Been to Bach a few times, but its gone downhill. Small portions for expensive prices (£9 for a tiny baguette). They’ve removed certain menu items that used to be really nice and others are just not nice (the Banana tostadas are just sickly sugar on top of corn tortillas), it also looked a mess on the plate. Coffee was tiny as well. Bit hit and miss. Additionally the service was very slow. The food did taste okay, just not the quality/price I’ve come to expect from the previous 2 visits. Probably won’t be back after that experience.

Dog friendly! I very nearly just walked past until I saw a couple enter with their dog. I'm glad to have popped in. Good atmosphere, friendly staff, dog friendly and tasty french toast with bacon and syrup.

Went there on a Tuesday and waited about 10 mins for a window upper seat. Worth the wait. Though you will need to remember to wifi passcode from the menu, I missed it and didn't get to use the WiFi. Came here for the window seat and a corner to write. Peaceful corner:

Nice cafe in Dundee, just across or East of the McManus Art Gallery and Museum. Motto is Kiwi or Aussie style, but they do not overplay it here. You get nice burger or fries here. Service was excellent, fast, friendly and always there when you wanted something. I was there with my daughter and her flatmates. Audience is young, atmosphere very nice. I can strongly recommend the French toast with bacon or the tiramisu from French toast. Expect no cake, it‘s more hot snacks and dishes you can order here. We will come back.

Great place for coffee and the breakfast menu is extensive. Plenty of seating (place is enormous). Friendly, fast and efficient staff. Place is owned by a Kiwi so lots of Kiwi themed posters and merchandise. Great place to stock up on your Tim Tams and Whittaker’s Chocolate!

Lovely place and been a favourite in the past. But today service was not great. Drinks came after our food arrived. Burger (£11.50) was not worth the price. If it had come with a choice of side/fries (£3.50 extra) it might have been. £15 for...

I couldn’t fault a thing. The food was excellent and the service was friendly and quick. Everything was very fresh and tasted fab. If you are in Dundee and need a bite to eat then if you make this your choice you won’t be disappointed!

Just what Dundee needs, staff, atmosphere and decor is absolutely spot on. Not over fussy but comfortable, relaxing and enjoyable. My only gripe is that my chicken bao buns came in the tiniest of enamel dishes, couldn't get my fork and knife in to enjoy the deliciousness.

We turned up soaked from pouring rain waited on table and they gave us table nearest the door when there was plenty seats upstairs which was cosy the food arrived I had vegan breakfast I didn't like 2 things in the breakfast and asked for something in place of it and got rudely told no there is no substitute the breakfast turned with weird beans hard tiny black pudding deep fried hash browns 1 peice of haggis 1 tattie scone and some mushrooms I knocked back the halloumi and tomato and even had to pay extra £1 for 1 peice of toast £13.50 ouch very not worth it my wife got beetroot burger which looked nice too be fair but was only look warm and had to go back to re heat we also got a bowl of small potato risole like things which were nice and spicy but not worth £7 ...2 cans of karma cola total bill £35 I actually thought it was very expensive and I always tip everywhere I go but on this occasion the service was poor and the total bill was wrong I never argued it but certainly won't be back in my opinion the place is nice but the food is pretty average for the price
