Having visited this cafe a few times over the past year or so, and been happy with the food and service, I found today's visit very disappointing. Even allowing for the fact that the place was busy, there was no welcome, tables were not being cleared quickly and after around ten minutes waiting for service and seeing a couple who had just arrived being attended to, I was left with the distinct impression that my custom was not welcome. In the end, I walked out and found an alternative artesan bread shop on the market place which did a delicious, freshly-made sandwich and cafe latte at a reasonable price. I think today's wasted effort at Birds in Ashbourne will be my last.

We popped in here for some gingerbread to revive some old memories. It is not the place it used to be 40 years ago! I recall them selling mainly gingerbread in boxes or smaller packets. The gingerbread tastes the same but now there are only a couple of small shelves with gingerbread pixies for the children or small packs of round biscuits. Otherwise it mainly sells the normal bakery fare. Presumably there isn't the market for excellent gingerbread nowadays...

5 family members visited the cafe this week 2 of the 4 coffees came incorrectly firstly 3 sausage baps with stuffing and apple sauce were ordered 1 white 2 brown- simple one would have thought - but no. 2 white 1 brown delivered The lady did offer to change it but it didn’t go down well in the kitchen with a ‘ well that’s what they asked for ‘ so we could all hear Very unprofessional Roll changed ( no butter this time though) Never mind. None of us got the stuffing or apple sauce promised anyway ( at least no one felt left out) 🙄 Quite disappointing really It used to be a really lovely tea room.

This place used to be excellent but has really, really gone down hill. Food is still okay but we didn’t even receive half our order today. We barely received an apology from the staff who hadn’t even realised, baring in mind they had about 3 tables, until told when we asked to pay. Sad to say we won’t be going anymore.

I could write a long and tedious review on this place but I’ll Bullet point as it’s not worth my time Or effort - rude staff - run down surroundings - dirty toilets - expensive menu - EXPENSIVE DRINKS! (85p for a carton of milkshake to take away £1.55 to drink in!! …. They’re 3 for £1 in Morrisons) - food was mediocre at best - advertise a roast in a roll (told It’s only Saturdays…… it doesn’t state this anywhere) Worst of all …. NO GINGERBREAD

The Ginger Bread shop is exactly what you expect of a traditional english bakery / cake shop. Since COVID you obviously can’t sit inside as you where able to previously which is understandable. I can’t wait to be able to visit and sit in again. We are still more than happy to collect the fresh cream cakes and eat them in Ashbourne Park with a coffee from their also! We know things are gonna be different in this COVID world, but no need for rudeness. 1st visit (& last) we don’t know “their” procedures! Yet their COVID police, sorry I mean front of house should explain and not take it for granted that you know “their” way! Then be rude and sarcastic! We left ! You can blame COVID for a lot of things. But rudeness isn’t one of them. Seems they’re living off their past reputation , They should look at the “Bakewell Pudding” shop in Bakewell... that’s truly how to survive on past reputation! (& they’re polite too!)

So disappointing! I had been to the shop as a child so I had fond memories of going along to buy a gingerbread man here. Bringing back my family years later sadly it was not the experience I’d hoped for. Considering it still had the same shop front I can’t believe it sold cheap looking gingerbread men, packaged up in cellophane, with tasteless edible paper icing on. It tasted more like shortbread. So sad. My daughter was so disappointed as gingerbread is her favourite treat. Thankfully we are staying in Bakewell so we were able to pick up a much tastier one from the Bakewell tart shop there!

Having been attracted by the appetising appearance of the cakes & bread in the window display, we ventured inside and bought a some rolls. The clean, friendly, traditional establishment was not short of customers of all ages or staff, who were clearly happy in their work. In fact, all staff we met greeted us with a smile & freely engaged in friendly chit-chat, helping to make us welcome. Thanks to that, we vowed to go back after a further walk round the town for our mid-morning drink. The welcome remained as warm upon our return. We ordered a black coffee, a hot chocolate and a tea cake to share. Service was prompt and polite. Having enjoyed our scrumptious tea cake, we purchased a pack for ourselves and one to give to the in-laws. We also bought two pasties - a Cornish and a cheese & onion type, which we decided would go nicely for our evening meal.We (my mrs & I) agreed that like the rest of the shop & seating area, the loos were kept spotless. We will visit again when we return to the nice traditional market town that is Ashbourne. In short, The Ashbourne Gingerbread Shop comes highly recommended.

4 of us had a couple of hours to kill in Ashbourne. After popping into a few shops for early Christmas presents we managed to find 2 tables of 2 free in the birds cafe. After a few minutes the waitress asked if we were together and would we prefer our tables pushed together - we said yes and this was done for us - no problem. ( excellent customer service). Our order was promptly taken, all of us deciding on the same 'light bite' sausage, egg, chips and beans with coffee, latte, and tea. We were soon served and the portions were brilliant. Hot cooked food and hot coffees ( rare nowadays). For around the £4 mark the value was excellent as was the service all of us thoroughly enjoyed it. ( but 'lite bite' doesn't do it justice). When visiting Ashbourne for the first time for many years, we walked into the toiwn centre to buy some famous Ashbourne gingerbread. Imagine our feelings when we found the Ashbourne Gingerbread Shop, but with NO GINGERBREAD. It's a lovely old buiding, and is a regular cafe run by Bird's, an East Midlands chain of bakery shops. But why on earth don't they bake and stock traditional Ashbourne gingerbread? In the end, we did find another outlet which sold the traditional gingerbread - the Cheddar Gorge cheese shop and delicatessen. So go there instead!

We visited today for brunch. We were greeted by two older women workers stood in the centre of the cafe chatting. They saw us and decided their conversation was more important and carried on. Unsure where we were supposed to sit or be seated we headed over towards them only for them to turn their backs upon seeing us coming and continue their conversation in the wide open kitchen doorway instead. We sat down anyway at a vacant table, after around ten mins we had our food and drink order taken. (There were only two of us waiting to order and around 4/5 of them working/chatting). When the food arrived I decided to find a member of staff to request some sauce. They had all congregated within the kitchen doorway again chatting so stood there myself and said excuse me. Only to be glanced at and ignored for them to carry on speaking between themselves. Slightly bemused I waited until a member of staff came from the cafe and asked if I was ok waiting by the kitchen door. Requested some sauce to her. It never came. It wasn’t very busy. Really poor service from these older ladies, was more like a WI meeting for them than a public cafe.

I have visited this establishment on several occasions since the new year. Unfortunately and much to my surprise the cooked food in the cafe continues to be poor. On every occasion the fried eggs where over cooked, burnt sausage, cold food served to the table, cold plates with hot food dumped on them and worse my wife and I never seemed to get our meals at the same time. When raising the problems with staff we was offered no apology, only excuses for the cold plates, reason given was that the kitchen did not have the facilities to heat up customers plates prior to serving food, We gave them enough chances but because of ongoing problems will be taking our customers elsewhere fromm now on

We visited for a snack on Saturday lunch time. My parents have lunch here sometimes when they visit the town but this was the first visit for me. We received a very genuine and warm welcome from our lovely friendly waitress and couldn't have asked for better service throughout. There is a good choice on the menu and there's also a specials board - I have to say the jacket potatoes looked really tempting! We had a range of light snacks from tea cakes through to a ham sandwich but a big thumbs up goes to the doorstep toast. Food was served promptly despite it being busy with a good turnover of customers. It's only fairly small inside and with space being somewhat at a premium the tables are a bit squashed together and the decor is a bit dated. However don't let that deter you as the warm welcome and tasty food are well worth it. Don't forget to pick up a Bird's pork pie from the shop part on your way out - delicious!!

As a family member of the original Spencer's who owned this Gingerbread Shop, I was excited to take my son there back in 2012, when I returned on a holiday from NZ. I was really disappointed too. Not so much the food, but the attitude of the staff. I asked for a "fluffy" for my 2 year old (which is a common thing in NZ where children are welcomed in cafes). They didn't know what one was, so I explained it - basically a small cup with warm milk and lots of froth (from making a cappuccino which they sell). It's easy, and having worked in a cafe myself I know how easy it is. They wouldn't do it and it was a big effort for them to offer him a milkshake. When I suggested that perhaps they could do such things in future they simply said I would have to take it to the management myself. I haven't been back on any visits since, and don't plan to. I went to another cafe on another day on the same trip, and they were happy to make a fluffy. The Ashbourne Gingerbread Shop was originally a family home, ran by a family. They need to remember this and bring back some of the family values.

Alas the Old Gingerbread Shop falls well short of expectations - mainly due to poor service and over-stretched staff. The place itself was crowded, with some poor table management - a table for four occupied by one person, whilst four people crowded around a table for two; several tables for four only occupied by two people, with two parties larger than this leaving unserved. Our order was taken fairly promptly, and our first coffees arrived equally quickly. Thereafter things went downhill. Just how long does it take to prepare beans on toast and a toasted sandwich? Certainly not the 20+ minutes that we waited - by which time our coffees had largely been consumed, and what was ;left had gone cold!We decided on two more coffees - but getting a waitress's attention was almost impossible - after 15 minutes I went and interrupted the till queue. Our coffees did come quite quickly after that, but this should not have been necessary. Only two waitresses appeared to be serving, although another did appear when things had started to quiet down slightly. Where was she when she was badly needed?! Sheer bad management! We've called in several times, but on today's showing won't be rushing back - there are a number of rival establishments to explore.

Me and my partner ate here during a quick stop in Ashbourne. Cute little old fashioned tea room with plenty to choose from on the menu. I had a topped Derbyshire oatcake, it was lovely but unfortunately was absolutely covered in cheap cheddar cheese which spoilt it. Same goes for the cheap bready sausages my partner had. Overall was okay, good value for money and service was polite and fast but I don’t think I would return in a hurry.

We enjoyed a simple lunch here as we were passing through Ashbourne and this bakery was handily located close to the town centre car parks. Service was welcoming and prompt whilst the food and drinks represnted excellent value. Would definitely return if in these parts again.

As breakfasts go this is probably the worst we've had, cheap sausages, deep fried mushrooms and fried oatcake which was like a large crisp. Think the staff need to pay more attention to customers rather than having a gossip amongst them selves to which is why they probably got the order wrong in the beginning. Been here a few times and has gradually got worst, hence that was the last. Sorry but you need to rethink.

The food is always good and the staff are friendly and helpfulI can't fault this little cafe/bakery shop. What you get is a small traditional bakery building that has been taken over by a big local bakery company (Birds) but, don't let this put you off as the food in both the cafe part and the shop itself is good quality and they are always busy.

Look up this shop (Bakery) as my friends daughter loves gingerbread.Expected to find a wealth of all things gingerbread! Instead found a cafe with a tiny bakery bit attached! The cafe looked & smelt like a greasy-spoon serving deep fat chips & greasy fried eggs. It was busy so there must be a need for that kind of food!Very disappointing as with it's history it could (& should) be a goldmine for all things gingerbread!

I've eaten a cooked breakfast here a couple of times, and it has always been very tasty and freshly cooked. It's always really busy to eat in as well, so that should show the quality.Definitely recommended if you fancy somewhere to eat, it's a lovely cosy little place, and the breakfasts include a pot of tea too.Don't forget a cream cake on your way out!

When I worked of a Saturday (early) morning as the "boy" in the bakery, on the ovens, we supplied bread, cakes and biscuits fresh made to the shop. Now, the ovens are gone and the shop belongs to Birds. The little "tea shop" has taken over as the main attraction and as a venue for coffee of a morning with perhaps a toasted teacake or similar, you'll be joining a lot of locals as they rest from shopping. It's uncomplicated and provides a pleasant street-view rest as you watch the rest of Ashbourne go by.

A delightful bakery and cafe with a long history & tradition. They really made use if the space by putting in side seats that allowed you to see across the shop. The cafe was extremley clean and service was excellent. Whilst we only stopped for coffee and cakes there was a good choice on the menu for both a light lunch and something a little more substantial. The portions looked a good size and it seemed really good value for money.

Loved this place ... it was supposed to be for a quick coffee but it has many marvellous ideas especially at this time of year regarding decorations, gifts for all the family, plants and homeware. Do visit if you have the chance ... ps great coffee and cakes too !

Had a lovely hot roast pork sandwich, it was obviously all homemade and the stuffing was one of the best I’ve tasted , been a few times on my visits to bakewell with my wife and couldn’t recommend it more highly

Disappointing food. Fish and chips looked OK but the batter was undercooked and three of us ate the fish and left the batter. They offered a replacement which we refused and accepted a discount and free coffee. A nice place, not busy on Monday, market day. I am not surprised if this quality of food is regularly served.
