If you are looking for an old school drinking pub with character, you couldn't pick better! Doesn't serve food to save confusion.

Great local bar on the southside. Had come up from Leith for the day and had never visited the establishment. Quiet initially but quickly fills up. There is a cellar bar underneath for live music or private functions.

First time visit recently to see a jazz trio in the cellar bar Loved the place, cosy, intimate atmosphere, great selection of beers at reasonable prices and good service. Will definitely be back.

The most unfriendly and cliquy pub I have been in. I’ve marked service as one star but the girl that served us was excellent however overall it really wasn’t the most comfortable place to visit as a first time customer.

Booked out the cellar for a birthday party. Prices were reasonable, staff were stellar, and the whole place was very accommodating to any and all needs me and my guests had.

Hand pulled Scottish beers always on tap and decent keg range too. A nice corner of Marchmont with great staff. 👍

Never had anything to eat .....but Le Beat Club Night(early evening 6pm) is a must with a great mixed crowd and choice of drinks. Ohh and Casey our "dispenser of drinks " was entertaining 😆

Was in the bar Friday 2nd Feb in the evening.. terrible service at the bar . If you are paying a high price for a pint u expect a full pint . Staff training needed I think.

Someone local took us here after we'd been playing at Marchmont St. Giles for Lucia. Lovely pub but not at all local for me😉

What can I say about here apart from stunning, its really hard to find a bar in the heart of Edinburgh that makes you think this is a proper old school pub. The staff are incredibly friendly and the manager fiona had us in stitches just a couple of drinks here and we felt like we had knew her for ever. We can't wait to go back here again ❤️ definitely our new fav bar, x

Cosy cellar bar, great venue for a flamenco gig. Tha bar upstairs looked like a friendly local but didn't stay on for another drink.

Saw the flamenco dancers. The venue was cozy but they successfully performed wonderfully. The atmosphere was great. Excellent bartenders.

This is a great wee local, good beers, friendly staff and regularly has live music in the cellar bar.

Lovely pub, excellent choice of taps and really nice staff. There are comfy tables and chairs set up outside with a canopy overhead if the weather turns. Atmosphere always really excellent and cosy, the occasional very well-behaved dog, generally a really nice place to get a pint from.

I used to drink here in the mid 80's when the Brown family was always at the bar. Peter Brown and his family were also so nice to me and took time to help me navigate my emigration to Scotland.

This is a lovely pub with great music at weekends. Good wifi and clean toilets. Sadly I don’t like to use ‘plastic’ so I spent my money elsewhere. Cash is legal tender and must be accepted.

Not a good experience. They refuse to take cash....it's legal tender and should be accepted everywhere....plus by not taking cash you are costing yourselves more money by the percentage the machine supplier takes from you....clearly not very good management ..

Disgusting place. It’s so dirty here! The barmaid was literally picking her nose and eating it, then serving drinks! We were repulsed by her and her scabby cold sore. The main thing for me at any bar or restaurant is cleanliness and politeness. This place has neither. AVOID. Wish I could have given zero stars. They also refuse cash! Actual Scottish notes and English notes!! Maybe it’s because it gives the bar maid cold sores?

Great pub very friendly staff and good atmosphere

Went to the Cellar Bar this afternoon to hear Charlie Wood’s “Memphis” show and it was brilliant. What a musical life he’s lead in Beale Street, Memphis. A great story teller, pianist and singer. The bar woman was excellent also. A lovely and smallish speakeasy type venue. After we went upstairs to their pub. Great service and relaxed atmosphere. Great selection of gins, I’d recommend the Scottish Raasay (near Isle of Skye). Haven’t been in the evening so not sure what it’s like. As a fairly local I’ll be back for their music nights downstairs.

I visited the Argyle on Sunday afternoon, they had a live music session, which was excellent. Country or Blue grass music, really great atmosphere. Very friendly bar staff!

First time in this pub,loved the olde decor ,staff were nice and it was a descent pint. Still not taking cash and the ladies toilets bit disappointing.

Nice Bar and very Friendly Staff

We Visited the argyle hoping for a few drinks on a Friday night. We often stay in Marchmont and have visited this pub before. We entered the door and not sure of the current seating policy following Covid relaxation. We waited for guidance from the staff. Two female bar attendants were at the bar. They both looked at us and then turned their backs and ignored us. I approached the bar to ask what we were to do. One was pulling a pint. The other was doing nothing. Both looked at me again and gave me the stink eye. . I started to speak. The one doing nothing turned her back and engaged the other In conversation. I waited for a few mintutes. Still no service or acknowledgement from the now rude bar staff. So we went to the pub over the road and spent our money over their. The bar staff at the Argyle and Cellar need to have a bit of customer facing training. If these two rude females are working another night together I recommend that you immediately go to the Earl of Marchmont over the road. Staff their will at least serve you a drink. !!!!! The crisps are delicious too 😊😊😊😊. Would have given a zero score if that were possible.

I was showing my brother around Edinburgh, and wanted to give him an example of warm and welcoming Edinburgh hospitality. I thought this pub would be the place to give him a really good impression of what this city has to offer. It looked like a great place from the outside and I was hoping for a fun and cosy place to enjoy a quick drink with a good atmosphere. How wrong I was. Sadly, this establishment has taken enforcing compliance with Covid regulations to a ridiculous new level. I wasn’t prepared for what happened next. As we came through the doors, the lady at the bar barked ‘mask!’ at us, like a primary school teacher scolding naughty toddlers. Immediately rattled by this, we reached into our pockets and put our masks on as we approached the bar. Because of the aggression of the tone, we were suddenly a bit on edge but we complied with the command. But it wasn’t enough for the lady at the bar! She told us with great moral indignation that because we had forgotten to put our masks on upon entry, she wouldn’t serve us (even though we put them on straightaway after she barked at us)! It wasn’t enough to appease her, and we were refused service! She seemed genuinely outraged that we had made this innocent mistake. Even though we went along with her orders the moment she shouted them at us (and she really was rude), she still threw us out! I understand that this is a difficult time for us all, and that we all need to do our bit to help the fight against covid, but this really was crazy. It was a genuinely awful experience. Instead of a warm welcome, we got cold, arrogant, self-righteous officiousness. Instead of an enjoyable evening, we were treated like either criminals or disobedient children. It left a terrible taste in our mouth, was an unbelievable failure of service. I took my brother to another place to restore his faith that Edinburgh was a welcoming city, but this place left both of us with a horrible impression. They really let the side down. I thought we were all in this together? I gave this place two stars because in fairness the atmosphere and the decor looked quite nice. It’s just a pity we didn’t get to enjoy them. And maybe it’s just one bad employee creating this hostility, not the entire establishment. I will definitely never come here again, and won’t ever recommend it to others. We had an awful experience at this place.

Great bar, great selection of beers, largely Scottish ones. Can be busy, need to get in early to get a seat sometimes.

I have visited this pub on a number of occasions and have always been impressed by the excellent service and the friendly staff. The customers like the establishment and the local area are upmarket but not unfriendly.

Lovely, friendly bar for the residents and students of Marchmont. The only thing that lets it down is that it is always freezing cold inside. If only it had an open fire!

Great pub and love the quiz night

We booked the cellar bar downstairs out for a private event on Friday. The staff were so accommodating and welcoming even though there were a fair few of us there. It is a lovely place and we were looked after well. Can reccomend highly!

Went for a Fringe show. The had a good selection of beers, and live music.

A great little pub in Marchmont with regular tradition music sessions by musicians who really know what they’re doing. Slow in the afternoon but picks up around 4:30. Nice German beers on tap.

Lovely setting and great space but just missed something. No audio or TV screens, if they do I didn't hear or see any of it.

I'm a regular visitor to this great pub. It's a busy place with a mixed crowd and a good friendly atmosphere. Bar staff are very great too. Good range of ales, lagers, wine, whiskies, gins etc including non alcoholic beers. Regular good quality music events downstairs ranging from soul nights to live jazz, country, blue grass etc.
