Good pub to eat for the national dish Hagges.

Food was solid, had a burger, onion rings and a scotch egg. Drank a beer while waiting for my food. As my food was delivered, by beer was empty, didn't have water. I tried to request a second beer, but the bartender dropped off our food so quickly and avoided eye contact that even when I requested it, they just didn't hear me. My server walked by an additional 3 times, beer clearly empty, and I got 3/4 of the way though my meal, 10 minutes later and finally I went up to the bar and asked, "Could I get another beer please?" and she stared daggers at me, no verbal reply, just a nod. Hostess was on her phone at the bar. Waitress was elsewhere. We were finished for 20 minutes before we finally had to hunt someone down for a small box and the bill. I don't know if this establishment just pays their servers poorly, but I waited tables for 3 years and the service here was just negligent. Our waitress was friendly, but the bartender didn't seem to want to acknowledge us. Worst service I have had in years.

I'm very happy with the place, had the vegan fish and chips, and that is really what I was looking for. My dad, Omni, had the steak pie and he liked it, I would add gravy to the carrots and peas as they tasted like boiled frozen veggies out of a microwaveable bag. The waiter with the glasses gave a great service, but I guess her finished at 9 and left. We are just tourists, but i would gladly come back. The black ale also was very nice

Tavern restaurant located in the middle of the Royale Mile. Very welcoming, international food with very attentive and pleasant service. The fish and chips are very good accompanied with salad and of course potatoes. Highly recommended

Ideally located and not too pricy. I took a Cullen skink and a cranachan (it is very rich). Nice atmosphere, friendly staff.

Nice traditional pub feel, tables were squashed in together however and not enough staff for amount of people waiting. Food was lovely and we enjoyed our meal.

Amazing lunch! Fish chips and mushy peas was fantastic really enjoyed the mushy peas!! Mac and cheese with garlic bread was very really tasty. All served in a nice atmosphere, perfect place for a pint and lunch break

Loved this place as a traditional Scottish dining experience. The Innis & Gunn lager with the haggis tower was absolutely delicious and I couldn’t have been more pleased with how yummy the haggis was. Also highly recommend the Cranachan dessert to finish off the full experience. Friendly service and lovely atmosphere.

Slightly larger than some of the other places we visited but it still had a really nice cosy feel because of how busy it was. Quickly seen to and asked if we wanted food or just drinks and sat in a small little nook near to the door. The food looked good, although we did not have any

Overall the food was disappointing. My wife and I had the Scotch egg, instead of the egg shown on their web page, an egg with a soft, runny center surrounded by a savory pork mince we received a cold, hardboiled egg wrapped in a tasteless mince. My wife had the soup of the day, broccoli cheddar which was very good. I had the steak and ale pie. The filling was tasty but it was not a pie. It was served on a puff pastry croissant-like bun that had been cut in half and the steak and ale filling ladled onto it and the upper half half of the bun placed over it. The bottom half just melted away and there was none of that satisfying pastry a real pie would possess. Overall the food was very disappointing.

In the afternoon after a walk, relax together in this bar, from alcohol-free cocktail or tea, to pils and beer, pub food and whisky. Casual atmosphere. Very doable, cozy.

We had lunch there, it was good, the place is nice, wide choice of Scottish dishes and affordable prices. Negative point: When paying when we ask to pay separately (which is totally our right) the waitress blows and seems annoyed.

I went during the afternoon of Storm Éowyn, as this pub was a little empty at the time, but still had a nice quiet atmosphere. I ordered a Hot Chocolate and the Haggis Tower. The Hot Chocolate might quite possibly be the best Hot Chocolate I have ever had! The Haggis Tower was also hot and tasty. The haggis itself was well cooked and well seasoned. Perhaps the presentation of it could be improved, but could not fault the taste. My server was sweet and helpful.

Small pub and restaurant along the Royal Mile. The environment is very welcoming and the staff are attentive and courteous. The food is very good, the two times I have been to this place I have always eaten and appreciated the classic "fish and chips". Good choice of whisky.

Great authentic pub with super delicious food! The pub is comfortably furnished and you could have a warm meal at lunchtime. The service was very friendly and quick. There was a good selection, including vegetarian dishes. The food was really very good and at fair prices. Definitely recommended! :)

Simple dishes but overall quite good, reasonable price.

I’m sure the food is good, but I only had a beer in a very relaxing atmosphere after walking up to Arthur’s Seat which is just what I needed.

We had the Sunday Roast and a couple of hand pumped cask ales 🍺. There is always a whisky or two to be had here and will probably be a bit cheaper than the tourist traps and whisky flights outside on the Royal Mile. Situated on the Royal Mile. Friendly staff and a good atmosphere. Definately recommend

Disgusting rip off prices will never go there again. I dont mind paying a little extra for the ambience of a place but when exactly the same drinks are almost £7.00 cheaper at a bar not 100 yards from here there is something very wrong. In a World where so.many pubs are closing due to lack of customers this place is exactly the reason why so many people choose to drink at home!!!

Spectacular site at the beginning of the Royal Mile. The attention is impeccable. There is a separate sector for those of us who were just going to have dinner. The rest of the place is just a pub. The food is delicious and abundant. It was our place throughout our stay in Edinburgh

El personal era muy servicial y eficiente y el ambiente tranquilo significaba que uno podía disfrutar de su comida sin prisa. Como visitante de Edimburgo quedé muy impresionado con este pub y sin duda volvería en mi próxima visita a la ciudad.

I really enjoyed this place! Great pub vibes with seating for drinks or for dining. Friendly staff. Still get a lot of the ultra tourist crowd but also seemed like there was some locals there as well which is a good sign. Wife has celiacs so we went for dinner and drinks. Staff was knowledgeable, no separate fryer so couldn’t have the chips. Gluten free buns available (my wife says the gf bun was really tasty as well!). Kinda limited options for celiac but what they did have was great!

the best fish and chips. very tasty and good portions. restaurant has warm and cozy vibes. every menu looks great. we had fish and chips, the other one is halumi and orange salad which was super good. fish and chips come with small salad and this also very good combination.

¡Adorable! El número 1 fue nuestra primera comida en Escocia después de bajar del tren Caledonian Sleeper de Londres. Dejamos nuestro equipaje en el hotel caminamos por Calton Hill antes de caminar por la milla real y nos topamos con este lugar. Después de tener apetito, comí pescado con papas fritas con una sidra de pulgadas. El camarero dijo en su camino al trabajo que nos vio caminar en la carretera hacia la colina y nos preguntó de dónde éramos y lo que estábamos haciendo en Edimburgo, dándonos algunas recomendaciones! Los tres terminamos nuestra comida partiendo un pudín de toffee pegajoso que estaba delicioso. ¡Después de ir a The Chocolotorium por el camino desearía haber probado el Cranachan también!

Avoid the place the food was terrible I ordered fish and chips they looked like straight out of a supermarket frozen and charged £4 for a glass of orange and then charged 10 present service charge they say best fish and chips in the royal mile I hope not AVOID AT ALL COSTS

Would not recommend this place, the food was poor and far to overpriced for the value, we originally wanted to go Worlds end across the street but it was booked out so we went to No1 which wasn’t busy and now I can understand why. I would not recommend this place

Where to start, Must try cullen skink, very well dosed. Huge portion of nicely prepared nachos, with 3 dippings (it was a suggestion from table next to us, and it was worth it). Haggis tower creamy and full of flawors, definitely a go to option here! All of that more than enough for 2 people.

We were here as football fans. We received great advice and great service, good food and good drinks... We had a lot of fun. Absolute recommendation: Haggis and cask ale.

Cozy pub. Weak G&Ts. We weren’t even sure there was any gin in them at first. We let them know we wanted to order food, then waited 30 minutes and no one ever came over, even though there were only four tables occupied in the whole place. Finished our drinks and left. Lots of other options in the area. Do yourself a favor, and go somewhere else.

Food was average. There were more chips than fish. Haggis was tasty! Ale pie steak was average. Toilet was dirty. Service charge is mandatory So, not great, not terrible

Small place with drinks and food. We weren’t sure if we could seat ourselves or not and waited a long time for someone to acknowledge us. Once seated we waited a long time for menus. We ordered and food came out quick. Food was delicious, hot and fresh.

The first night of our Edinburgh honeymoon, we planned our meals more spontaneously; we literally saw this place ahead of us on the street, quickly made sure it wasn't a dump online, then walked in with no real expectation of what we'd get. Fortunately, we got exactly what you'd want from a pub; good food and good service. I ordered a haggis tower (my first ever), and I was in love from the first bite. The minced peak of the tower was rich and savory, and the whiskey cream sauce complimented the mashed potatoes well. The sticky toffee pudding we had after was likewise delicious, so velvety and dark that you could mistake it for melting fudge. The atmosphere in the evening was cozy and welcoming, with the restaurant lit by dim yellow bulbs that evoked the warmth of candlelight. Very welcoming after coming in from a miserable cold rainy night. The service was kind and relatively quick with our order, especially considering how densely packed the pub was by the time we were settled in and eating. I'd happily recommend No.1 High Street, but you might want to arrive early for supper!

We were eager to give the Huggies a shot after seeing the fantastic prices on the menu outside the bar, which convinced us to check out this restaurant. The interior has a lovely atmosphere; it feels roomy, and the seating is quite comfy. Our food arrived quickly, and the staff was both polite and friendly. The dishes were absolutely delicious! We ordered both the vegetarian Huggies and the original ones. I highly recommend trying them!

Very very good food and atmosphere! I can highly recommend the „Steak and Ale Pie“. It comes in a pastry crust, very delicious! Don‘t forget to ask for their whisky selection!

Worst burger I have ever tried. Meat was overcooked and tasted like this bad meat mixed with antibiotic. Like this really bad cow smell.

Love this place for a pub vibe off the main tourist traps of the mile. Great food and atmosphere, sometimes even a band is playing traditional music as well.

Both the waiters( the blonde female and the tall slim male) were racist and discriminating. They took the order of the white family sitting next to me and said they can’t take my order because they stopped serving food. Zero for service and zero for respect

I'd give 0 stars if possible. The shortish waiter was very rude to us! I was impressed with the food during our first visit but the second really put us off. I'd recommend walking down the street or finding a different place in the area, as there are better options around and some are even more affordable with much more well trained staff. This place seems to have their regulars so they don't care about you...

We had a decent experience on our first visit. The haggis was good and we had no complaints with customer service. However, on our second visit, on entering the place, we felt as though we were invisible or just being ignored completely. We had to walk right through to get someone’s attention after which the waiter rudely said “we don’t have a table for 5”. He avoided eye contact and just carried on serving a table. We left feeling very uncomfortable. There also was a spare table that we know could have seated 5 people.

Service is atrocious and when we entered, the waiter just told us without looking at us that they dont have space in a very arrogant way. No customer service skills from the waiters because they were originally ignoring us. I wouldn't come back, despite a good experience yesterday in terms of the food. I rather pay more for better service.

My husband and I came upon this pub while searching for where to eat near our hotel we ate here twice! I had the Cullen Skink my husband had the steak and ale pie really tasty! The second time again as everywhere was busy the waitress Emma/Emily was very accommodating and friendly each time we came and bar staff friendly. We also got to enjoy some live folk music which we thoroughly enjoyed. Thankyou !!!

Great place to sit and rest for a drink or three. Also, excellent food when you return for dinner. The staff definitely cares and while busy keeping up during dinner, they still obviously care. We went twice just for drinks and once for dinner.

We went there twice in one day. Once for drinks in the afternoon and then we came back for dinner. Both times the service was excellent. The employees were super-busy but they were still friendly and helpful.

My partner and I stopped in this nice pub for dinner while visiting Edinburgh. Both pints were very nice and reasonably priced (£5.50 for the Tennent’s and £6.30 for the Guinness), but the same thing cannot be said for the food I had. My girlfriend went for a tasty soup of the day (leek and potato) whereas I went with a burger, because the waiter told me they ran out of another dish I wanted to get. The burger was ok, but the bread was completely wrong, it was not the brioche bun that was written on the menu. Nevertheless, the overall quality was good but I expected more since this was supposed to be one of the most popular pubs in Edinburgh.

Disappointing Experience Despite Decent food I visited No. 1 High Street tonight with my girlfriend, and while the food was decent, the service was a major letdown. From the start, there was confusion about whether to place our order at the bar or at our table. The bartender assured us he would take our order at the table, but then proceeded to ignore us despite our attempts to make eye contact. He stood idly at the service window and prioritized finding a seat for someone's pet while we waited. With the kitchen nearing closing time, we finally gave up and went to the bar to place our order ourselves. When our food finally arrived, we discovered a hair in one of the dishes. Instead of offering a proper apology, the manager came out and oddly remarked that the chef is bald, as if that excused the issue. She agreed to take the dish off the bill but didn't bother offering a refund since we had already paid, leaving us feeling completely dismissed. While the food at No. 1 High Street was good, the poor service and the manager’s unprofessional response ruined what could have been an enjoyable evening. I won’t be returning.

We recently visited here and were left thoroughly disappointed, not just by the food but by the service as well. To start, the food was fine, but nothing remarkable. The dishes we ordered arrived cold, including the scotch egg, which should have been at least warm. When we brought this up with our waitress, she seemed irritated, took the dish back, and still left it on the bill. Her attitude throughout the meal was short, dismissive, and quite frankly, rude. Anytime we asked a question, it felt like we were bothering her. However, what really left a bad taste in our mouths was the feeling that we were treated differently due to our race. The pub was predominantly white, and the waitress who served us was noticeably more pleasant with the white couple seated next to us (after our meal). She answered their questions, offered recommendations, and engaged with them in a way that was starkly different from how she treated us. We can't help but feel that our experience was tainted by more than just poor service. It’s disheartening, to say the least, and I would definitely recommend almost any other place on the Royal Mile

They serve their scotch eggs frozen/cold. I asked the waitress if I could get mine warmed up in the microwave because it was really really gross. My partner’s fries were lukewarm, but that wasn’t worth bringing up. Wouldn’t recommend to anyone.

Ce bar restaurant très vivant vous réconcilie avec la salade caesar. Un plat tout simple mais très bon ici. Le fish ans chips est excellent. La panure est légère est bonne. Il vous en coûtera autour 15 à 16 livres pour l'un comme l'autre. Les serveurs/serveuses sont souriant.s et agréables
