The Archway Fish and Chips in Eden

Found this place after our original venue were not doing food. Ill have to thank them next time I see them as this Fish shop is excellent. Nice and clean, Huge portions very reasonably priced and happy smiling staff - well worth a revisit.

Excellent chips and friendly service. The chips, curry sauce and onion rings were great. We visited during the busy Kirkby Stephen vintage vehicle event and intent to visit again.

I am new to Kirkby Stephen, and made it a priority to find which of its 4 fish and chip takeaways was the best. They are all good bar one, which isnt bad, but by far the number one choice when treating myself is Atchway. They reign the top for the great service, immaculate premises, but mostly, most importantly, their consistently really good fish and chips. Every time I go, I know I am in for a treat. Hand cut chips, great mushy peas and golden, crispy, delicate battered fresh fish, which is of bigger than average size, all which make for a meal which would satisfy the hardiest of eaters. Me? I can never finish it all, to the delight of my dog, who is probably their number one fan. If you are visiting this great,buzzing little market town, Archway Fisheries is a must, when finding yourself somewhere to guarantee a great meal which you will undoubtedly remember. Eat in or take out, it's an experience!!!!!

Ordered takeaway meal over the phone, which was excellent, as always when we eat there. Have eaten from Archway many times, both before Covid, when you could eat inside, and since, when only the takeaway service is available and have never yet had a bad meal or poor service. Keep up the good work!!

We had fish chips and peas. We both enjoyed them. Nice and fresh and really hot. Thank you. We will be back.

Just stopped for fish and chip lunch here, ate inside, everything was just perfect one of the best fish we have had in a long long time, perfectly cooked fish not over cooked as so many are lately. Lovely chips and mushy peas and a pot of tea for two in lovely white pottery . I must also add the place is spotlessly clean and a lovely friendly couple serving.

The wife and I called in for fish and chips on the way home from the lakes. We drove away from the high street to park and eat them. The chips were not to bad but the fish were absolutely disgusting so dry it was like trying to eat rubber. the wife reckoned they must have been left from dinner time and re-heated. I wanted to take them back but the wife did not want any bother so we just binned them and went on our way.

Truly the very worst fish and chips I’ve ever had in my life. We popped in a couple of weeks ago after having a COVID test- what fun! Anyway - I waited for a very long time to be able to have my order taken. The fish was NOT freshly cooked for me - it was already in the cabinet. When we got the items home (a matter of two minutes) and unwrapped them, the fish was dry - unsurprising as it had clearly been sitting in the heated cabinet for a substantial mount of time. The chips were cold and soggy. Just awful and the fish portions were very small and thin.

We had takeaway fish and chips last Saturday evening, and enjoyed them. The portion sizes were good, and the staff were helpful, and the service was prompt. There was no evidence of the sort of criticism recently made about this place. Average price for fish and chips about £6.60.

Fish was ok, but the chips were truly terrible: barely cooked (some actually raw inside) and swimming in grease. Family really looking forward to a chippy tea and so disappointed.

Called in yesterday teatime whilst driving past It was Dripping fat, fish had a strange taste. Batter and chips went in the bin across the road. On the pricey side as well

The chips were old, the batter on the fish was stale and the fish was so dry it was inedible, I left most of the food. Food this bad and this old should be illegal.

Never again will I be visiting,staff members rude,one in particular glaring at me. Asked for fish and chips small version, was given that with added large chips, payment excessively high, staff workers refused to believe they were in the right and I was completely wrong. No refund given for that.Dont visit unless you want to be glared at and have an uncomfortable atmosphere. Absolutely appalling.Would give 0 stars if I had the option.

The fish was not hot. I saw it in the display when I (an American tourist) walked in. A regular got a fresh piece, I was given the old piece from the display. Fried Batter was oily. Oil tasted old. Threw away the chips and stripped off the batter/crust. Fish itself was delightful.

Cooked fresh to order. Good service with a smile, good portion size and great taste. Couldn't ask for more, just perfect.

Tuve unas maravillosas palomitas de maíz Chicked y mi esposa tenía un bacalao rebozado encantador, ambos servidos con papas fritas tradicionales. ¡Dos bebidas redujeron la factura a menos de 15 años por todo! El personal era hablador y servicial, las mesas estaban limpias y tenían excelentes manteles 'mapa del mundo'. Esta fue nuestra primera visita pero no será la última. Si quieres una buena comida tradicional británica, bien cocinada a un precio razonable, no superarás a The Archway en Kirkby Steven.

We were staying 10 minutes away from here and it was worth the drive. Lovely fresh fish and chips and not unreasonably priced. If in the area again I would go back.

I got a takeaway fish and chips. it was really dreadful. fat running from the batter, which was flabby and dark coloured. not much fish just loads of very nasty batter. chips saved it as they were just about edible.

We ate here on day 6 of our coast to coast walk. We were lucky to find a table as they were very busy. Delicious food and the dog was welcome too!

Visited here when staying in the area on the back of a recommendation. Decent chips and got a spam fritter also. Priced okay too.

Had fish & chips takeaway this evening - had to wait for 10 minutes whilst it was freshly cooked & it was totally worth it. Fantastic food - can really recommend it.

had a nice 5 mile walk around the area and then called for fish and chips the place was clean and tidy the staff were friendly had a laugh and joke while our fish was cooked fresh for us we got take away we could not fault it at all and the next time we are up that way we will call in again,

We have been here a few times now and each time the food is just excellent, great home made chips and beautifully fresh fish. The staff are really pleasant and helpful. Couldn’t recommend it highly enough, a gem of a place.

There are three fish and chip shops in Kirkby Stephen - all have a restaurant attached.... but if you want the best then definitely go to The Archway. Adjacent are blue badge carparking spaces opposite Barclays Bank.

Always get a lovely welcome and and food is cooked quickly and the nicest of all 3 chippies in Kirkby Stephen. There is something for the kids too and also tables insider eat. Highly recommend

Yo estaba empapada después de un duro día andando en la ruta de la costa costa, así que estaba muy contento de llegar aquí. Llegué en el hábito de tener pescado y patatas fritas durante el costa a costa de ser abundante y barato cálido y disfruté de mi pescado y patatas fritas.

The restaurant offers takeaway or sit in and at a mid-week tea time was very busy at both counters. There are two steps at the entrance with a hand grip on one side. Level inside. Friendly staff, good service, good food.

Metimos en algo para comer en forma de Newcastle. Los cuatro de nosotros todos tenían comida diferente y estaba delicioso, probablemente el mejor "fish and chips" que he tenido en mucho tiempo. Sin duda lo recomendaría a hambre estomacal!

Llegamos a la tienda como estaba cerrando y estaban fregando el suelo. Dijeron que sólo tenían un par de cosas a la izquierda que fue salchichas y patatas fritas. Eso era lo que queríamos, así que todo estaba bien. Fueron muy amable y servicial y la comida era encantador.

Después de un paseo alrededor de Kirkby Stephen llamamos para un pescado cada la chica detrás del mostrador era simpático y hablador. El pescado estaba fresco para nosotros. El bateador era marrón y dorado muy ligero no gruesas y pesadas como un montón de tiendas de peces. El pescado era blanca y precario en general no puede quejarse en absoluto y cuando estamos en Kirkby Stephen nuevo y quieres pescar no se ve en ningún otro sitio gracias arcos volveremos gracias Andrew y Jacky

Four of us had very good fish and chips here last night. I was a wet evening so we ate in and were served by friendly and cheerful staff. The portions were generous and both the fish and the chips were well cooked and fresh. A nice place for a cheap decent meal.

18yrs now I have been to Kirkby Stephen with my family at easter and this was the first fish shop I found that had a spare table to get out of the weather and get a warm.John and staff where great then and fish and chips where cracking on that Saturday, and every year we have been and never had any problems always been clean plates all round and value for money too Last year was a wobble as John retired and sold the business on and the new owners had lost the green exterior decor and upgraded the interior and where still pefecting the art of a good chippy - so I only went once instead of the usual twice (Sat and Sun )This year I was wondering what to do.. top chippy , coast to coast or Brough chippywell the weather turned nasty and as I cut through the town from the cattle mart through the arch, the smell was great it was early, 11.30 ish but the smell got the better of me and I was in, fish lot for me , service was warm and friendly and as she delivered the portion on the counter they looked fab ! Oh it was heaven chips bang on and the fish (maybe a bit slimmer than normal) was coated in batter to perfection and tasted so nice , I was straight in and started chomping away - FANTASTIC Sunday weather was so bad we ate in and again greeted with a warm smile and prompt and efficient service by the team Clean Plates all round Brilliant chippy for us cant wait till next year Well done

Fantastic place to eat if you are driving passed.... Highly recommended on trip advisor already therefore when we were Driving up north from Chester to Newcastle this was a brilliant stop off, they have tables inside for you to eat your fish n chips with a lovely hot mug of tea ! We loved it such nice warm staff who welcomed us both when they were close to closing .... Thank you

My favourite chip shop in the whole world. They offer take away or eating in, although the eating area is a bit on the small side. There's a good variety of food on offer, the prices are good and the portions are generous. The staff are pleasant and are always happy to help

We have dined here previously, so, arriving late in Kirkby Stephen, we decided to eat here, as we had enjoyed the food in the past. However, we were very disappointed on this visit. The chips were not very tasty and the fish was not very good either. The batter was unbelievably greasy and we had to leave the batter. The pie was, to quote my grandson, "stodgy and not very pleasant". He left most of the pie and his chips. I do not know what was wrong on this occasion, but we did not rate this visit.

Called in yesterday at 1730 for fish and chips taken out. Clearly cooked for some time before fish batter was horrible and chips dried sticks!

Having been to Kirkby many times this is the best fish and chips in the village! Having not been for a few I was a bit worried but its the same owners and the food was good as normal. The prices are reasonable too!

Four of us turned up at 5.00 o'clock after a long days walking, so fish & chips all round. All thought it very good and certainly value for money. We 'sat in' and found the place to be clean, well kept and the staff friendly and chatty. We were tourists but most of the patrons seemed to be locals and were obviously well known to the chippy's staff.

Nobody outside Yorkshire knows how to cook fish in batter, it is always too thick, but it was freshly cooked and the chips were good

We had a 'sit in' fish and chip lunch on Easter Saturday - very good service, served by a young lady with a smile. I had the 'big fish and chips' which were huge while the wife had the smaller version which was, to us, normal size. They were served straight out of the fryer and were piping hot and good and tasty. Tea and bread and butter all for under £13 - what a bargain ! Yes the dining area was small but we found a couple who did not mind us sharing their table - very good of them but there again this is a friendly place and everyone was happy. Give The Archway a try if you are in Kirkby Stephen - you will not be disappointed.

This is a little gem of a fish shop. It is certainly the best fish and chips in Cumbria, friendly owners, made very welcome!

We popped in to this chippy whilst staying in the area. We opted to eat in and were glad we did. we had a selection of dishes between us and all were lovely.. the staff were lovely and very friendly and informative. We didn't realise when we arrived that the chippy was due to close for the night shortly after and we never would have known. The staff made us feel like we had all the time in the world which was truely lovely. I would highly recommend this chippy.

After a long day on the C2C I just fancied fish and chips. Expectations were low, so far from the sea! I needn't have worried. Freshly prepared, well cooked and very nicely presented F&C with great mushy peas. Staff were smily, friendly, attentive and efficient. Good product served by good people. Thank you.

We stumbled upon the archway one pleasant spring evening. We purchased a variety of sea and land based creatures, all covered in a delicious golden batter. Barry and Christine welcomed us into their establishment and their very helpful staff went to great lengths to handwrite receipts for each of our party of 3 so that we can satisfy the demands of our stringent expenses department.We were presented with our food in Cumbria's finest polystyrene receptacles. As the sun set beneath the east Cumbrian hills, there was a chill in the air on the streets of Kirkby Stephen and we exclaimed "oh gosh, it's thoroughly unsuitable for al fresco dining!" We went back cap in hand to Bazza and Chrissy requesting further details about their dine in experience, they offered us the opportunity to enjoy the comforts of their cosy restaurant without the need for a supplement to exchange our polystyrene for their finest bone china for diners. As we settled into our seats, we couldn't help but think we were in Barry and Christine's living room as Emmerdale played out it's dialogue on the screen in the background. However we didn't need television to experience a truly close knit community as several highly satisfied customers entered with springs in their step. We arrived at this restaurant after a long journey, and in need of sustenance. We didn't realise they were about to close after their lunch-time service, consequently we got served the last dregs of everything. We should have complained, really, but didn't. They have very cramped, extremely uncomfortable seating for a max of 10 people, it wasn't especially clean, and there was no toilet. My advice would be to check out alternatives in the vicinity, avoid going near closing time, and buy your food to carry out.
