This restaurant is a ‘hidden gem’ in North Devon. We were a group of 11 so had booked well in advance with menus pre-ordered. We weren’t disappointed. The food was all hot and just amazing. Carole is a fabulous chef and her assistant so helpful. This restaurant gets booked so booked up, but it’s worth the wait.

I booked this almost 3 months in advance, for our wedding anniversary - and i have to say, it was well worth the wait. The service was understated but very efficient and the food was sublime. We had a beautiful Chablis with our meal, very well priced. My husband had a ‘delicious’ seafood starter and i had a well seasoned prawn crumble, both arrived at the table fresh from the oven and the accompanying toast and bread were still warm. We both chose lamb cutlets for our main and they were fabulous. Tender and perfectly cooked (pink) and the accompanying vegetables were red hot, perfectly cooked and beautifully seasoned. I didn't have room for a dessert, but my husband pronounced his ‘absolutely lovely’ and i have no reason to doubt his opinion! We were both stunned when it came to paying the bill - it was so cheap! We paid more for fish and chips last week than for the fantastic main course and i know which id rather have! I am amazed that this restaurant is not further up the trip advisor rankings - it is seriously one on the best places i have eaten at in a long time and it wont be long before i go again…. If i had to make a complaint, i found the seats uncomfortable but its such a minor thing that in no way would it put me off going again I have tried to book this restaurant for a while now, but whenever the opportunity arose they were fully booked. I booked in March to go in May, and as I left i noticed a sign saying they are fully booked until August, so if you want to go be advised to book well in advance.

Took us a long time to get booked in to The Angel. But my was it worth it. Lovely cheese, leek and mushroom for the wife. A mussel, mushroom crumble in a cheese sauce as a starter. Mains was lamb chops, cooked to perfection, loads of roast potatoes and veg. Too much for one but ha ho!! My wife had fish stew which she said was gorgeous. For a pudding my wife had the ginger pudding with brandy and caramel sauce. I had no room!!!! Had to book now for next year that’s how popular this small family run restaurant is. Brilliant

Only open on Friday & Saturday this restaurant is a gem. Run by 2 ladies one the chef and one front of house. I can only say that we felt blessed to have found this restaurant. The welcome put us at ease and we ordered drinks. My starter of fish mousse was fantastic, both main courses were a delight and my wife enjoyed her desert, also of a really high standard. The Chablis at £25 was a real bargain. This is a wonderful restaurant and Ilfracombe is very lucky to have it. The value for money was amazing.

A first trip to the Angel given the closure of a number of Ilfracombe's best restaurants. Very good food provided at unbelievably low prices. Starters which usually cost close to £10 are nearer £5. Likewise our main consisted of two delicious sea bream (two each) for £12 each, whereas we would expect to pay about £20 plus each. An excellent bottle of Chablis was £25 whereas again we normally have to pay more than £40. At these prices and quality the Angel is not surprisingly fully booked for many weeks ahead. So if planning a trip to Ilfracombe book early. Only opens on a Friday and Saturday evening.

I booked this restaurant based on the reviews as we were coming on holiday to Ilfracombe and had no recommendations. It certainly lived up to its reputation for excellence in food, service and atmosphere. The interior is an eclectic mix of vintage decor as the shop used to be a butcher's shop many moons ago with some very interesting items around. The service was excellent with great consideration given to the Covid situation and to make the guests feel comfortable. The food was outstanding, with a small, varied menu, with fresh local produce and served on piping hot plates. Good wine list too.

This was our first meal out for six months. We chose The Angel because the food and the service are always superb, but also because we trusted Carol, the owner, in making sure that everything was in order in these difficult Covid times. We were right to. We felt 100% safe there. There were only five tables, well distanced, and The Angel is normally open now only on a Saturday night. The place was spotless and sanitised and all the protocols were observed. The starters were excellent - my prawn, mussel and mushroom gratin was brilliant - and I normally don't like mussels! Our mains were lamb and venison. Both of these were cooked perfectly. We know that The Angel is booked up for weeks now - but we'll definitely be back.

I was fortunate to get dinner here midweek when it is normally closed, due to a larger booking being made by someone else. I came with my daughter and first impressions were confusion. It doesn’t really look like a restaurant from outside and it’s a bit odd inside too - quirky you might say. However, that’s not a criticism at all, it’s nice eating somewhere different. Moving on to the food, it was fantastic. The halloumi and seafood gratin starters are both high quality and meals on their own. We had the duck and lamb mains and again, both were real quality - absolutely perfect. I skipped dessert but my daughter had the Eton mess which again was very good. The lady serving was friendly, happy and polite and overall it was just very very professional. I can’t recommend this place enough.

And the value for money! If this restaurant were in London, you'd be paying double the prices and still think it was a bargain. My husband and I like to try new places on the rare, child free nights out we get. A friend recommended The Angel a few months ago, and we've only just got around to eating here. I am so sorry it took us so long. The place is quirky and homely in equal measure; just a handful of tables so very intimate. The menu is simple and offers some usual classics; we opted for cheese souffle and grilled halloumi to start, followed by ribeye steak and rack of lamb for our mains. Everything, and I do mean everything, was cooked to absolute perfection. The service was impeccable, attentive without being intrusive, and it was lovely to see the chef hands on in the dining room. We had the restaurant recommended to us locally. The restaurant is run as a 'hobby' by the owners but don't let that worry you at all. Ilfracombe is just about closing down in October & we were the only ones eating in the restaurant that night which meant that the place did lack atmosphere. The menu is well balance with a good emphasis on seafood as you would expect. I can't fault the food. It was as good as anything I have eaten in a restaurant and was excellent value for money. It's difficult to guess what kind of client the owners are aiming for. I don't think it would be ideal for kids and younger couples might want to choose somewhere a little more modern or with a more mainstream feel. For us (in our 50's) it was just about right. The prawn and parmesan crumble or hot fish mousse is a great way to start your dining experience, perhaps followed by fall apart braised venison or pork tenderloin with faultless and thoughtful veg sides. As for dessert, there are joys there for you to discover yourself. There are more 'fashionable' places to eat in town, but genuinely this is an absolute gem. Yes, you have to book, but you will leave the restaurant with happy taste buds, a satisfied belly and a surprisingly small dent in your wallet. And as a footnote, Keith, front of house, is a charming fellow with a dry sense of humour that may not quite gel with people who expect hand wringing obsequiousness; I can hand on heart say I have only ever found him welcoming, courteous and very personable!

The welcome was very friendly and service good until we made a complaint about an over cooked steak, having ordered a medium rare and getting a medium to well done. The chef was quite rude saying the steak was still cooking as it was brought from the kitchen to the table. Been a waitress for over thirty years I know how a steak should be cooked. The steak was also tasteless, luckily we had a sauce over it. We were offered a replacement which we declined. On leaving the restaurant we where told to take our complaint up with the butcher !! I can safely say we will not be going back.

The Angel. Well deserved reviews. We only go there occassionly but we have a good time when we do go. Try it. Parking is available at Wilder Road car park over the road and the traffic lights have a pedestrian phase if you evoke it by pressing the button. It's well worth a visit.

Really lovely restaurant, but the food whilst nice quality was I thought pretty bland. I had for my main course salmon with lime & ginger cream sauce and it was fine - nice piece of salmon, plenty of cream sauce, but no hint of lime or ginger could I detect! Veg were in dishes to share, a nice selection and a decent amount too, plus very nice roast potatoes! Pudding - the best sticky toffee pudding we have ever had! It included some treacle and was just fab!

Forget Damien Hirst - think Keith and Carl Tomlinson! Don't understand how 31 Excellent, 1VG, 1 Good make the Angel only #11 in Ilfracombe - there can't be 10 better in Devon, let alone Ilfracombe! So here is another Excellent to try to elevate The Angel to the very top. This unpretentious, unheralded gem has been housed in a former butchers shop at the unfashionable end of Ilfracombe's High St. for 25 years, and operated by a husband and wife team, using entirely fresh ingredients and home-made recipes. The starters include home-made fish mousse and mussel and prawn gratin. Steaks, venison and fish dishes are all beautifully cooked and the desserts to die for. All at prices which are much lower than newer, more pretentious establishments. The Angel is not for those in a hurry - the individual preparation of dishes makes for a longer, but more enjoyable occasion. This review is submitted after 6-8 superb meals over a 10-year spell without a single blemish. Well done, Keith and Carol!

This was our second time at The Angel and it was fantastic. Food is amazing, service is brilliant and the atmosphere is warm and homely. The folk that run the place do this as a hobby but could teach others a thing or two on how to run a first class restaurant. Brillisnt

We use to think that this restaurant was a whole food place but went on recommendation about 2years ago. Since then a meal there is a must every time we visit Ilfracombe. It's a quirky place, formerly a butcher's shop, with lots of 'object' decrating shelves- perfect for I-Spy!But the food...it's Devine! Home cooked to order with vegetables that are a meal in themselves.Tonight we took my nieces and sister & it didn't disappoint. 12 out of 10!! Thank you!

We visit the Angel every year when our family go down to Devon and would never miss it.Great food (especially the cheese soufflé or the filet steak), great setting in an old converted butcher's shop, brilliant friendly service from the couple who run it, and a nice cosy atmosphere. They only serve 6 tables per night, so make sure you book in advance.

By far this is one of my favourite, if not my favourite restaurant. It's a true gem, a rare find in todays catering industry. It's run by a lovely couple, very welcoming and friendly. The building itself is fab. Its in an old Victorian butchers shop, filled with antiquities and interesting objects. The atmosphere is always great and although it is small, it creates the best dining experience, you really feel pampered. The food is always fantastic, cheese souffle, lamb cutlets, steak, whatever you choose it is guaranteed to be beautiful. Having lived in Ilfracombe for many years, I have tried pretty much every restaurant, but only a couple are truly fab and this is one of them. I can't recommend this place enough.

Don't be put off by the quirky interior, adapted from a butchers shop and the antiquated furniture; this restaurant is a little gem. You will be greeted and served by Keith in his welcoming manner, the meal having been prepared by his wife Carole. The food is constantly of a high quality. The Angel is really worth a visit. Younger generation diners may write a different review and give it a different assessment.

This is a gem and an out of season joy. From the moment you phone to book and realise Keith and Carol are probably opening solely for you, you know you are in for a treat. The atmosphere is reminiscent of a French village establishment right down to the hallway entrance. The jug of tap water arrives unheralded and the starters are varied and tasty - fish dishes in the main but the cheese soufflé must be tried. Venison steaks melt into deep sauce and the fish specials are generous, fresh and filling. Also fresh are the vegetables which accompany the mains. Very good choice of warm and cold desserts. Wine selection is limited but good - white comes cold and is given an ice jacket to keep it that way. A pleasant eating experience - thank you Keith and Carol for allowing us into your home. Try this if you are near and don't be too disappointed if they won't be opening because as explained in the menu notes, being doting grandparents sometimes takes precedence.

We've just been to the Angel after their New Year break. The food was great as usual, this time we had the lamb and the venison - really good as were the starters and the puddings. Can't praise it too highly. Keith is really welcoming and Carols food is to die for. also the prices are so reasonable.

My family visit this restaurant a few times a year, normally for a birthday, anniversary or other special occasion. As other reviewers have said, the menu does not change much from year to year: however, we're more than happy with that as we know what we can order each time we book. The food quality is excellent: Carol is a very accomplished chef, and Keith a very attentive front-of-house who is always available when needed but does not intrude otherwise. The restaurant is a little more expensive than most places in Ilfracombe, but the extra paid is more than made for with the quality of service, food and for the intimacy of the venue. The only downside is that they're always on holiday each year around the time of both my wife's and my birthday!

We went here with some friends after several recommendations, and were not disappointed. We got a very friendly reception on arrival, which continued throughout the meal. The food was excellent, with a wide selection available from the menu. I had the rack of lamb, which was perfectly cooked, and my partner had the duck, which he was still praising the next day! We will definitely be going back here again.
