While staying Kippford for a week we visited the pub a few times. It was good to call in for a beer after walking in the area. The food was lovely, the fish platter was lovely as was all the food we had. Good beer too. Enjoyed sitting out and looking over the estuary. Friendly, helpful staff.

Good location on the seafront with impressive views across the estuary. Sadly the hotel eating areas are shabby, with badly worn seating. The food, on our only visit, was of low quality and poor value - undercooked vegetables, tough meat and chewy puff pastry.

i have enjoyed my trips to kippford over the years and always been happy with the food at the Anchor. i have sat outside and watched the delivery of fresh fish, crab, prawns etc all cooked up that very evening. it was great but what's happened now? wevisited on thursday the 16th Aug and my wife and I both had fish pie. looked great and home made but it was cold in the centre. the young lady serving was very sorry. gave us a free drink and replaced the food within about 15 mins. again my dish was a little cold in the centre and my wife was ill that night although I was fine. reheated food! using a grill i think and it was simply not warmed through. 2 goes for the same result. tasted really good too. shame.

The "Extensive" menu looks like 3663's shopping list. Difficult to spot the real cooking amongst it but I presume there must be some as like other reviewers I became aware that regardless of the choice the "Chef" P's off at 8.30, remarkable what he can fling together in 5 minutes....3663 strikes again, or is it Brakes? Most disappointed to be told one busy lunchtime that the menu had been truncated to an A4 photocopy, and even more upset that having chosen from four mains on the list, three of which were fish based, that fish was "Off". So it was a baked tattie or nought! We chose nought!Went back though a few days later, hoping we had simply experienced a "Bad day" The vegetarian with us chose the mozarella and tomato salad. £6.95. Three slices of tomato and three slices of moza. (Some balsamic dribbled over) Showed it to the barman and asked if he would pay seven quid for this. He conceded the point. Five minutes later a plate arrived with six slices of tomato and six slices of moza! What is it about a "Chef" who thinks that vegetarians are the human equivalent of cows? Munch grass, and never complain?Locals rave about the anchor and I wonder if it is with rose tints, or has it changed hands and headed down the slipway?

For some reason the anchor no longer allows people to book a table, we were told that we would have to wait until a table became available for all 11 of us! The result was 11 of us on 3 separate tables after a very tense wait. Loads of people were vying for tables , those sat already dining or drinking only had to twitch to be pounced on by numerous people asking if they were leaving, embarrassing for all involved. After waiting 40 minutes I was told the food I had ordered was not available, 10 minutes later I was told my second voice was not available. Third time lucky! the meal in the end was ok, decent pub grub but worth the wait? I'm not sure. When I complained the managers comment was "you enjoyed it didn't you?". Appalling customer service. Where were the landlord and landlady whilst this chaos reigned? Sat at the bar drinking and talking with friends seemingly oblivious . The only reason this place is so busy is because they have such a monopoly . My advice: give it a swerve and try the Italian in Dalbeattie instead , brilliant food , brilliant customer service and brilliant value for money.

We arrived on holiday on Sunday evening and thought it would be a nice start to eat out at the anchor as we have done many times over 16 years, we arrived at 8.25pm and saw that food was only served until 8.30 so hurried through to the dining room to be told we could eat but they needed our order 'now' we asked for menus and as they were handed to us the urgently and rudely told us they needed our order now or we couldn't eat, we quickly looked for something we could each eat and ordered before finally sitting at our table, we then went to order drinks. 50 minutes later we were getting very hungry and still no food and not a lot coming out of the kitchen as we noticed a few other tables still waiting for food, we asked how much longer and were told 5 minutes, 10 minutes later 6 meals arrived, 2 of which were edible! My husbands med/rare steak was well done and 2 off the kids menu pizza were tomato sauce and cheese on some sort of microwaved grey bread, my rissoto was awful and believe be after nearly an hour later I would of eaten almost anything! We sent my husbands steak back an another 15 minutes later a med/rare steak came to us but by that point the amount of effort the chefs was prepared to put in was obvious, a tomato garnished his plate, just a full, uncooked tomato still with green stem intact! We eat out an awful lot and have never had such a complete bad meal, we spine to the manager who knew we had waited too long and knocked money off our bill, decent but not what we were after, after traveling with kids we would of rather paid full price and had a good meal, sadly we won't be going back, such a shame as it used to be great!

I would have rated The Anchor as the best place to eat in the Dumfries area until a couple of years ago, but I've been disappointed the last couple of times I've been. Today I wanted Haddock and Chips but they had run out of fish. I'd usually then go for chicken fajitas or something similar, but I found a lack of choices on the menu, so went for a Burger instead, which was nice to be fair. My wife went for Chicken Balmoral, chicken stuffed with Haggis in a whiskey sauce, but couldn't even cut through it and my sons pizza had also been overdone. Hopefully just an off day, but not good today.

Had a trip to the Anchor recently and was so disappointed. We only wanted a light snack, so ordered the combo starter for two! This was £10.00 and there wasnt enough food to feed a mouse! They had no chicken wings left and gave us chicken coujons instead and we counted 6 potato wedges on the plate. I know it was a starter but at the price there should have been plenty of food on the plate. I then thought i would order a sticky toffee pudding and ice cream..........big mistake!. It was tiny, dried out and over microwaved and cost approx £5.00. In all a bad experience and we know friends that have had the same happened to them. Time the management stepped up to the mark and brought this hotel back up to the level we have had in the past.

We ate here on a local's recommendation from several miles away. We had taken a holiday in Scotland at Southerness Bay due to our holiday in Spain being cancelled due to the Icelandic ash cloud. Despite feeling a bit down due to this the visit to the Anchor at Kippford made up somewhat as it is set in an estuary and the pub/inn overlooks this..a beautiful setting indeed! We had a dish called Balmoral chicken which is chicken wrapped in bacon stuffed with haggis and its yummy! Another night we had rib eye steak which is also scrumptious! We enjoyed the pub food so much we travelled back during a recent visit (May 2012) and ate the Balmoral chicken on one occasion and Chicken sizzler on another.. Food is perhaps the best i tasted in that area, the drinks were well kept and hence tasted good. Definitly worth a visit!

We've been going to the Anchor for many many years and its always good. Unfortunately, they have stopped taking bookings so there is usually a surge to get in early to get a decent table. Not an extensive menu but then most folk will order fish and chips or the beef and ale pie, both of which are very good and decent sized portions. Unfortunatley, they dont do hand cut chips, which would be so much better than the frozen ones they serve - they are always a bit oily and tasteless for me. On a good day, its lovely to sit outside with a drink and watch the world go by. They have a kids menu too and the fish is a decent sized portion. However, I wasnt impressed when they charged £3.50 for 2 scoops of kiddies ice cream - very naughty. Overall, its worth a visit and we keep going back but then there's not much selection within Kippford so they do have a captive market.

It was that last week of March when the sun was shining every day and we stopped for a drink outside the hotel. The view of the bay and watching the sun set was awesome. We took a look at the menu and decided to stay for dinner. So glad we did. Everyone ordered something different and each of us were happy with our meal. My husband had not had fish & chips until that night and was thoroughly happy. I had the stir fry. Not great but not terrible either. Our friends enjoyed their meals. Went back a few nights later and the boys had steaks. They said the sirloin was perfect and the rib eye was so-so. I had a chicken special that was fabulous. My girlfriend had the fish pie which was lovely. Service was excellent. If we ever go back to Kippford, we would still go by and have a meal at the Anchor Hotel.

Went with my husband & 2 children. Arrived a few minutes after 12 O'clock for lunch (sign outside stated that lunch is served 12-2.30p.m). Ordered 3 lots of spare ribs & 1 beef strogonoff (with half chips & half rice). Shortly after ordering, a 'sold out' sign was put on the specials menu regarding the ribs. A member of staff then took a tray with 3 portions of ribs into the next room and tried to give them to another table who told them they'd only ordered 1 portion. The member of staff then went back to the kitchen, I presume to check whose order it was, then on return, gave us the remaining 2 portions & said he'd get us a 3rd portion. Meantime he brought my beef strogonoff which could only be described as a childs portion - a slightly bigger than an ice cream scoop sized portion of rice and 6 thin strips of beef - when asked if this was a full adults portion, he checked with the kitchen &, bearing in mind this was just after 12 O'clock, said it was all they had left of the strogonoff! We were then also told that there weren't any other portions of ribs left and we would have to choose something else. To avoid any further time delay, we decided that the children could halve the 2nd portion of ribs between them (I have to admit they were a lot bigger than we'd expected anyway). Some friends who had happened to be lunching at The Anchor at the same time and had been sitting in the other room near the chap who got our 3rd portion of ribs told us that the waiter had told the gentleman he would need the ribs back & when the gentleman said he'd already started eating them, the waiter said he'd have to cut the rib he'd started eating off & he'd take the rest away (to give to us!!!). Thankfully our friends, realising what was happening, intervened otherwise there would've been a serious breach of basic food hygiene policy. On top of this, we waited almost 10mins, after getting our food, for cutlery and ended up asking for some before our food went cold. Obviously, even though they were busy, there wasn't nearly enough food for the specials menu if they were running out 15mins into service and there was a lack of communication between kitchen & serving staff, not to mention a questionable lack of food hygiene training of all staff. Needless to say, we didn't stay for a sweet.

My Wife and I spent a lovely morning walking around the picturesque village of Kippford and it's surrounding coastline . Having built up an appetite we decided to eat locally and retired to the Anchor Hotel. We made a good choice. A lovely homely atmosphere with snug corners to sit in and a roaring fire in the grate made this a truly charming place to be. The girl behind the bar was extremely friendly and helpful, directing us to the main menu, the specials board or the selection of light bites. We chose the main menu starting with the delicious fresh crab starter which was ample enough to share and we were happily supplied with two sets of cutlery to do this. I followed mine with haddock and chips accompanied by a pot of garden peas and a beautifully dressed salad. The haddock was very large and beautifully battered. The batter went from end to end, but wasn't too thick and there was no batter that didn't contain fish. The chips were thick and fluffy and by the end I could not manage the salad as I was too stuffed!! My Wife had the 'Anchor Burger' with bacon and cheese also with coleslaw, chips and a small pot of homemade tomato relish, all of which were wonderful. The burger was particularly good being made from top quality lean beef. My Wife also struggled to get to an empty plate with such a generous portion. After a breather I threw caution to the wind, as far as my waistline was concerned, and ordered the 'Anchor Rob Roy' a delicious ice cream, caramel, chocolate and shortbread sundae. Heaven on Earth. The ice cream was the creamy tasting flavour of childhood and the accompanying shortbread was very sweet and buttery-EXCELLENT. We accompanied the meal with 1x lemonade, 2x alchohol free lagers, 1x pint bitter shandy, 1x cup of coffee and some water. Total bill £36.40, so great value.

Having family living in Kippford for some 30 years, I have witnessed the various trials and tribulations of this pub over the years. Its current reputation locally seems to be on a relative high but from my recent experience, this is not down to its food, or service. During a recent visit, the prawns in the prawn cocktail had not been properly defrosted and the scampi was overcooked. The fish was mushy. Perhaps worst of all, the girl attending to our table started to clear the table, including the removal of the table mats, before we had finished eating. When not leaving a tip, she was clearly angry and asked what was wrong! This is a great pub in the true drinking sense but eat here (and it's not cheap) at your peril.

The Anchor is a nice pub for a drink, good atmosphere inside and in a lovely location for an al fresco drink if the weather is good. Unfortunately the food is over priced and average at best -the veggie food being particularly bad, relatively expensive, fodder. It is however better than it's only real competitor The Mariner down the road, which when I last visited a year ago, was verging on dreadful.

Dining is done in the lounge bar, one of the small rooms that make up the public bar or outside the front of the hotel. The food is traditional pub food, freshly cooked and plenty of it. The menu is compact with a daily specials board. If you are lucky you might arrive on a day when the owner has caught the seafood on the specials board. For beer drinkers there was two real ales on tap, one being locally brewed Criffel ale from Sulwath Brewery. Give it a try you won't be disappointed.

Don't entertain going here if you are a hungry vegetarian. There was a group of us and whilst one friend sat with a huge plate of lamb chops and veggies, chips etc. my wife had the misfortune of the vegetarian special. Same price of 12.95 and guess what it consisted of... a mushroom with goats cheese on top. Not even a large mushroom but a completely laughably tiny portion. laughable if it were not a meal at the end of long day. When questioned, the waitress simply confirmed that is what the dish consisted of and walked off! If they ever start serving truffles then run a mile or chuck your credit card in the nearby river! Most people thought that the food was ok but we would NEVER put any more money in their pockets for the simple brass-necked attitude. They have a bit of a captive audience and boy do they milk it.
