Excellent service with you ordering everything from your table which is very convenient. Good choice of food although children’s menu could be better and there were no pizzas which dissapointed our youngest grandchild. We all enjoyed what we ordered and look forward to calling again soon.

Lovely breakfast, well presented, kept me full all day. Staff lovely. Also, evening meal was delicious my husband had the chowder said it was lovely. Eldest grandson (age 9) had the ribs (off the main menu) did a good job nearly ate all of them. Perhaps, a smaller portion on children's menu. Have visited The Anchor a number of times always enjoyed, breakfast always been good but evening meals have come on ten fold. Until the next time.

Booked a nice table of five in plenty of time for our last night. We had chosen a nice table but moved to allow three old locals. To be honest didn't really mind that and understood why. However, the macaroni cheese was really greesy. He said its because we use real cheese! Really... What other is there. The fish pie, it was not. Should be called carrot and mash pie. Totally relieing on location. Service was actually good from the waitresses who were lovely but the young lad def not.

The anchor is a well known pub and restaurant in our area. We went with another couple, looked forward to it all day. We ordered the sea food platter which arrived with no lemon wedges; we asked for some lemon and some pepper, never arrived. Our mains arrived on cold plates, two fish dishes had cold veg and gammon steak with egg went cold very quickly. The chicken fajitas were lovely, apart from the cold wraps! Generally, lovely staff, but kacked a cohesive approach.

I had visited here a couple of years ago and was disappointed. New management means the place is transformed. Great energy, fantastic staff (really the best) and wonderful fresh food. Food and service is top notch.

We spent 3 nights in Kippford over New, spending plenty of time at The Anchor. We had a meal New Year’s Eve afternoon, went to the New Year’s eve party and had lunch New Year’s Day. We had a wonderful experience all round. Lovely food, lovely staff, great management team and a great atmosphere. The staff work so hard and the food was plentiful, hot and very tasty! We enjoyed our stay in Kippford so much that we’ve already booked for next New Year and are taking friends. We’ll certainly be booking the Anchor again for our meals and ringing up for tickets to the party again! Would also like to add that the DJ was fabulous!! We partied until the small hours!! 🤣 Thank you to The Anchor team!

I was hoping for so much more. Lovely spot and this place deserves a good manager who can manage the menu and drinks. There was no real ale in the pumps which suggests poor cellar management as barrels last a long enough time unopened. Some items were unavailable for food and what was there left an underwhelming choice and the food when it arrived wasn’t to the level I’d hoped although reading the previous reviews it should have come as no surprise. I didn’t raise my disappointment as other reviewers have expressed that the manager is something of a tyrant and I think I know who it was from how one person behind the bar was speaking to the employees. January isn’t great for the pub trade, I can only begin to imagine how much further disappointed I’d be in the peak season!

Went for a walk down at Kippford last week and thought it would be nice to get a coffee or tea from the Anchor as there was a sign out front saying the coffee shop was open. We were the only customers and there was no staff around so we tried to double check online if they were open or not. On the website it said they are “open all day everyday” but serve food from 12. We came at 11am so thought it would be fine to get a drink. We could hear music in the back so knew there was some staff there. We rang the bell twice, 5 minutes apart but still no staff came to assist us. Very disappointing.

After making our voyage from Woolton, Liverpool (Where John Lennon is from), we stumbled upon the quaint, quiet venue that is “The Anchor (Hotel) “Kippford””. Going to keep this short and sweet. We stumbled into the venue at 2pm on the dot, where we were greeted by a young lady (Graze?), she sat us right by the roaring fire (maybe too hot if you ask me LOL). Our baby boy Jack Russel (“Ringo”) was treated to a bowl of water and a hearty biscuit without him having to move a paw. My wife ate. I had food as well! Graze was very attentive and we were introduced to the South African guy Collin (maybe the owner?)). We very quickly became close with both the workers, ourselves and Ringo were quite upset we never got the WhatsApp details of the both of them, but “Let it Be” I guess LOL (The Beatles Reference). My food was good, but the waiters served. We LOVED the Halloween decorations, reminded us of our home in Woolton, Liverpool. Could definitely use a few more though, but we understand the current cost of living crisis. We were (including Ringo) under the impression that the hospitality industry is dying, but clearly the natural stars (Graze and Collin) are stopping this from occurring in Dumfries and Galloway, South West Scotland, The Anchor Hotel, Kippford, DG54LN. Last time we comed there was a lot of bush on the building, I miss it. Collin please contact me ASAP if you see this, you will always have a home with us here in Woolton, Liverpool. Graze always welcome :-}. Love, Shyanne, Derek and Ringo the rockstar (like the Beetle)

Too expensive for what it is. 9 quid for a whitebait starter which was a very small portion is not on, serving it with sweet chili sauce should have been a red flag. The "Extensive" menu looks like 3663's shopping list. Difficult to spot the real cooking amongst it but I presume there must be some as like other reviewers I became aware that regardless of the choice the "Chef" P's off at 8.30, remarkable what he can fling together in 5 minutes....3663 strikes again, or is it Brakes? Most disappointed to be told one busy lunchtime that the menu had been truncated to an A4 photocopy, and even more upset that having chosen from four mains on the list, three of which were fish based, that fish was "Off". So it was a baked tattie or nought! We chose nought!Went back though a few days later, hoping we had simply experienced a "Bad day" The vegetarian with us chose the mozarella and tomato salad. £6.95. Three slices of tomato and three slices of moza. (Some balsamic dribbled over) Showed it to the barman and asked if he would pay seven quid for this. He conceded the point. Five minutes later a plate arrived with six slices of tomato and six slices of moza! What is it about a "Chef" who thinks that vegetarians are the human equivalent of cows? Munch grass, and never complain?Locals rave about the anchor and I wonder if it is with rose tints, or has it changed hands and headed down the slipway?

For some reason the anchor no longer allows people to book a table, we were told that we would have to wait until a table became available for all 11 of us! The result was 11 of us on 3 separate tables after a very tense wait. Loads of people were vying for tables , those sat already dining or drinking only had to twitch to be pounced on by numerous people asking if they were leaving, embarrassing for all involved. After waiting 40 minutes I was told the food I had ordered was not available, 10 minutes later I was told my second voice was not available. Third time lucky! the meal in the end was ok, decent pub grub but worth the wait? I'm not sure. When I complained the managers comment was "you enjoyed it didn't you?". Appalling customer service. Where were the landlord and landlady whilst this chaos reigned? Sat at the bar drinking and talking with friends seemingly oblivious . The only reason this place is so busy is because they have such a monopoly . My advice: give it a swerve and try the Italian in Dalbeattie instead , brilliant food , brilliant customer service and brilliant value for money.

We arrived on holiday on Sunday evening and thought it would be a nice start to eat out at the anchor as we have done many times over 16 years, we arrived at 8.25pm and saw that food was only served until 8.30 so hurried through to the dining room to be told we could eat but they needed our order 'now' we asked for menus and as they were handed to us the urgently and rudely told us they needed our order now or we couldn't eat, we quickly looked for something we could each eat and ordered before finally sitting at our table, we then went to order drinks. 50 minutes later we were getting very hungry and still no food and not a lot coming out of the kitchen as we noticed a few other tables still waiting for food, we asked how much longer and were told 5 minutes, 10 minutes later 6 meals arrived, 2 of which were edible! My husbands med/rare steak was well done and 2 off the kids menu pizza were tomato sauce and cheese on some sort of microwaved grey bread, my rissoto was awful and believe be after nearly an hour later I would of eaten almost anything! We sent my husbands steak back an another 15 minutes later a med/rare steak came to us but by that point the amount of effort the chefs was prepared to put in was obvious, a tomato garnished his plate, just a full, uncooked tomato still with green stem intact! We eat out an awful lot and have never had such a complete bad meal, we spine to the manager who knew we had waited too long and knocked money off our bill, decent but not what we were after, after traveling with kids we would of rather paid full price and had a good meal, sadly we won't be going back, such a shame as it used to be great!

I would have rated The Anchor as the best place to eat in the Dumfries area until a couple of years ago, but I've been disappointed the last couple of times I've been. Today I wanted Haddock and Chips but they had run out of fish. I'd usually then go for chicken fajitas or something similar, but I found a lack of choices on the menu, so went for a Burger instead, which was nice to be fair. My wife went for Chicken Balmoral, chicken stuffed with Haggis in a whiskey sauce, but couldn't even cut through it and my sons pizza had also been overdone. Hopefully just an off day, but not good today.

Had a trip to the Anchor recently and was so disappointed. We only wanted a light snack, so ordered the combo starter for two! This was £10.00 and there wasnt enough food to feed a mouse! They had no chicken wings left and gave us chicken coujons instead and we counted 6 potato wedges on the plate. I know it was a starter but at the price there should have been plenty of food on the plate. I then thought i would order a sticky toffee pudding and ice cream..........big mistake!. It was tiny, dried out and over microwaved and cost approx £5.00. In all a bad experience and we know friends that have had the same happened to them. Time the management stepped up to the mark and brought this hotel back up to the level we have had in the past.

We ate here on a local's recommendation from several miles away. We had taken a holiday in Scotland at Southerness Bay due to our holiday in Spain being cancelled due to the Icelandic ash cloud. Despite feeling a bit down due to this the visit to the Anchor at Kippford made up somewhat as it is set in an estuary and the pub/inn overlooks this..a beautiful setting indeed! We had a dish called Balmoral chicken which is chicken wrapped in bacon stuffed with haggis and its yummy! Another night we had rib eye steak which is also scrumptious! We enjoyed the pub food so much we travelled back during a recent visit (May 2012) and ate the Balmoral chicken on one occasion and Chicken sizzler on another.. Food is perhaps the best i tasted in that area, the drinks were well kept and hence tasted good. Definitly worth a visit!

We've been going to the Anchor for many many years and its always good. Unfortunately, they have stopped taking bookings so there is usually a surge to get in early to get a decent table. Not an extensive menu but then most folk will order fish and chips or the beef and ale pie, both of which are very good and decent sized portions. Unfortunatley, they dont do hand cut chips, which would be so much better than the frozen ones they serve - they are always a bit oily and tasteless for me. On a good day, its lovely to sit outside with a drink and watch the world go by. They have a kids menu too and the fish is a decent sized portion. However, I wasnt impressed when they charged £3.50 for 2 scoops of kiddies ice cream - very naughty. Overall, its worth a visit and we keep going back but then there's not much selection within Kippford so they do have a captive market.

It was that last week of March when the sun was shining every day and we stopped for a drink outside the hotel. The view of the bay and watching the sun set was awesome. We took a look at the menu and decided to stay for dinner. So glad we did. Everyone ordered something different and each of us were happy with our meal. My husband had not had fish & chips until that night and was thoroughly happy. I had the stir fry. Not great but not terrible either. Our friends enjoyed their meals. Went back a few nights later and the boys had steaks. They said the sirloin was perfect and the rib eye was so-so. I had a chicken special that was fabulous. Went with my husband & 2 children. Arrived a few minutes after 12 O'clock for lunch (sign outside stated that lunch is served 12-2.30p.m). Ordered 3 lots of spare ribs & 1 beef strogonoff (with half chips & half rice). Shortly after ordering, a 'sold out' sign was put on the specials menu regarding the ribs. A member of staff then took a tray with 3 portions of ribs into the next room and tried to give them to another table who told them they'd only ordered 1 portion. The member of staff then went back to the kitchen, I presume to check whose order it was, then on return, gave us the remaining 2 portions & said he'd get us a 3rd portion. Meantime he brought my beef strogonoff which could only be described as a childs portion - a slightly bigger than an ice cream scoop sized portion of rice and 6 thin strips of beef - when asked if this was a full adults portion, he checked with the kitchen &, bearing in mind this was just after 12 O'clock, said it was all they had left of the strogonoff! We were then also told that there weren't any other portions of ribs left and we would have to choose something else. To avoid any further time delay, we decided that the children could halve the 2nd portion of ribs between them (I have to admit they were a lot bigger than we'd expected anyway). Some friends who had happened to be lunching at The Anchor at the same time and had been sitting in the other room near the chap who got our 3rd portion of ribs told us that the waiter had told the gentleman he would need the ribs back & when the gentleman said he'd already started eating them, the waiter said he'd have to cut the rib he'd started eating off & he'd take the rest away (to give to us!!!). Thankfully our friends, realising what was happening, intervened otherwise there would've been a serious breach of basic food hygiene policy. On top of this, we waited almost 10mins, after getting our food, for cutlery and ended up asking for some before our food went cold. Obviously, even though they were busy, there wasn't nearly enough food for the specials menu if they were running out 15mins into service and there was a lack of communication between kitchen & serving staff, not to mention a questionable lack of food hygiene training of all staff. Needless to say, we didn't stay for a sweet.

My Wife and I spent a lovely morning walking around the picturesque village of Kippford and it's surrounding coastline . Having built up an appetite we decided to eat locally and retired to the Anchor Hotel. We made a good choice. A lovely homely atmosphere with snug corners to sit in and a roaring fire in the grate made this a truly charming place to be. The girl behind the bar was extremely friendly and helpful, directing us to the main menu, the specials board or the selection of light bites. We chose the main menu starting with the delicious fresh crab starter which was ample enough to share and we were happily supplied with two sets of cutlery to do this. I followed mine with haddock and chips accompanied by a pot of garden peas and a beautifully dressed salad. The haddock was very large and beautifully battered. The batter went from end to end, but wasn't too thick and there was no batter that didn't contain fish. The chips were thick and fluffy and by the end I could not manage the salad as I was too stuffed!! My Wife had the 'Anchor Burger' with bacon and cheese also with coleslaw, chips and a small pot of homemade tomato relish, all of which were wonderful. The burger was particularly good being made from top quality lean beef. My Wife also struggled to get to an empty plate with such a generous portion. After a breather I threw caution to the wind, as far as my waistline was concerned, and ordered the 'Anchor Rob Roy' a delicious ice cream, caramel, chocolate and shortbread sundae. Heaven on Earth. The ice cream was the creamy tasting flavour of childhood and the accompanying shortbread was very sweet and buttery-EXCELLENT. We accompanied the meal with 1x lemonade, 2x alchohol free lagers, 1x pint bitter shandy, 1x cup of coffee and some water. Total bill £36.40, so great value.

The anchor is on the sea front and as such it is lovely to sit outside on a sunny day enjoying lunch and a glass of wine. Inside the log fire is cosy on cooler days but it can be quite cool if in the other parts of the hotel. Menu is good with excellent daily specials at reasonable prices.

We've dined at The Anchor several times over recent months and have never been disappointed. Service is good, staff friendly, food is nicely presented and ample portions too. The seafood platter I chose on the last occasion was excellent, indeed it's rather difficult to fault anything on the four occasions we've been of late, we're sure to be back.

There is a great circular walk round the coast from the beautiful sailing village of Kippford to the bay village of Rockliffe. We dalliedthere for a while enjoying the wee village and picturesque bay before returning over the Jubille walk, with its lovely woodlands and solway views, back to Kippford. This, 3 miles or so walk, took us a couple of hours as we consumed the scenery and worked up a healthy appetite. This was more than satisfied with a lovely lunch in the shoreside Kippford Hotel wheree we enjoyed good service, food and a well deserved local real ale. Just what the doctor ordered. If you are feeling less energetic just enjoy this lovely restaurant and chill in this pictureque, former ship building village. It really is picture postcard stuff. BUT, do try and get a seafront window table to top it all off.

Having family living in Kippford for some 30 years, I have witnessed the various trials and tribulations of this pub over the years. Its current reputation locally seems to be on a relative high but from my recent experience, this is not down to its food, or service. During a recent visit, the prawns in the prawn cocktail had not been properly defrosted and the scampi was overcooked. The fish was mushy. Perhaps worst of all, the girl attending to our table started to clear the table, including the removal of the table mats, before we had finished eating. When not leaving a tip, she was clearly angry and asked what was wrong! This is a great pub in the true drinking sense but eat here (and it's not cheap) at your peril.

Great location, friendly staff, homemade onion rings need I say more! The seafood platter was delicious too. Although we sat outside due to the sun actually being out despite chilly the snug bar looked great inside too. Just the place for a pint and decent pub grub

Had an excellent stay at the Anchor . Kippford is a beautiful village, especially in the sun. Had a great stay, staff were very friendly, helpful and attentive. There was a great buzz to the hotel and was very busy serving meals. Had dinner in the hotel which I would class as very good pub grub. The rooms had been refurbished since I last stayed there a few years ago, They were furnished to a good standard, clean and well appointed. The front rooms also had a cracking view over the Urr Estuary. The bar was well stocked with some good real ales and a small but well selected collection of malt whiskies. Will definately stay there again. Especially at the very reasonable price charged.

The Anchor is a nice pub for a drink, good atmosphere inside and in a lovely location for an al fresco drink if the weather is good. Unfortunately the food is over priced and average at best -the veggie food being particularly bad, relatively expensive, fodder. It is overall, fairly typical of establishments in tourist areas with little competition. It is however better than it's only real competitor The Mariner down the road, which when I last visited a year ago, was verging on dreadful.

We stayed in the beautiful village of Kippford in June 2011. This was our local for the ho liday, we ate here twice and stopped in for a drink on numerous occasions. It is a traditional pub. Dining is done in the lounge bar, one of the small rooms that make up the public bar or outside the front of the hotel. The food is traditional pub food, freshly cooked and plenty of it. The menu is compact with a daily specials board. If you are lucky you might arrive on a day when the owner has caught the seafood on the specials board. For beer drinkers there was two real ales on tap, one being locally brewed Criffel ale from Sulwath Brewery. Give it a try you won't be disappointed.

Don't entertain going here if you are a hungry vegetarian. There was a group of us and whilst one friend sat with a huge plate of lamb chops and veggies, chips etc. my wife had the misfortune of the vegetarian special. Same price of 12.95 and guess what it consisted of... a mushroom with goats cheese on top. Not even a large mushroom but a completely laughably tiny portion. laughable if it were not a meal at the end of long day. When questioned, the waitress simply confirmed that is what the dish consisted of and walked off! If they ever start serving truffles then run a mile or chuck your credit card in the nearby river! Most people thought that the food was ok but we would NEVER put any more money in their pockets for the simple brass-necked attitude. They have a bit of a captive audience and boy do they milk it. Pass on this venue.

My girlfriend and I have eaten here a few times now, the food in the past has been fine, but it was always more to do with the location than anything else, as it looks out over the bay and it's near to some of the 7 stanes mountain bike trails (Dalbeattie, Kirroughtree etc). Our most recent visit was quite surprising in that the food was above and beyond expectations. There is always a pleasent atmosphere, and visitors seem very welcome, I would strongly recommend the visit.

Food is standard pub grub but unfortunately the staff are young and very inexperienced. They don't seem to understand the varying degrees of cooking a steak and everything comes rare. If you ask them to take it away and give it another five minutes, they forget about you altogether. In the end I didn't get a main course at all but they still tried to charge me for it

Little choice for vegetarians, we had bacon on veg pasta, another time, chicken in a veg salad, and again ham in a veg salad. The main vege burger sells out fast.Meaty Lasagne was small and similar to a meaty pasta soup. The same size as a child portion at the previous place we went to.We go here loads of times hopeing that it improves but it doesnt. The anchor for a 'drinks and watching the world go by' venue is perfect.

Does what it says on the tin - decent pub food (with great specials) in a nice friendly atmosphere and with great beer - staff very friendly and great to be able to sit out in the sun and have a drink looking over the river and sea - highly recommended. Try to book ahead, as does seem to get very busy on a weekend evening. Kippford and nearby Rockcliffe are both beautiful - don't miss!

This was our first visit to the Anchor and we will definitely be back. The food was tasty and well cooked. The tempura prawns were crisp and sweet and the haggis bon bons were also in a crisp shell. The Highland Game pie was superb with lots of fresh vegetables. The pasta dish was also good. Service throughout was friendly. Next time we would prefer to be in the room with the open fire as the room we were in lacked a little atmosphere. All in all a successful evening.

Popped in for breakfast. 1 vegetarian and 1 Scottish. Plenty choices, great portions, tasty maple syrup pancakes and great service. Maybe a bit pricey at almost £20 but the food was good.

Went for Sunday lunch, it was ok. Plates for the carvery dangerously hot, A HAZARD. Meals were ok. Desserts were nice with a teaspoon of custard. The ice cream was sorbet which if we'd known we wouldn't have bothered with. Would probably go back if in area.
