The pub is nice, service is very good, the atmosphere great, and the food & drink menu impressive. Too bad the food (soufflé, salmon, desserts) is bland and unremarkable. Overpriced for what it is.

Just lovely. Lovely attentive service. Lovely food. Really lovely ambience. Absolutely worth the approx £45 I paid for a delicious main, a pudding and two glasses of wine. The more affordable wines are on tap at the bar, BTW, which I thought was quite cool. Perfect for an upmarket but informal meal out with friends.

When you leave what was once a great establishment with a feeling of being ripped off - then its time to let others know. The menu pricing vs portion size and ingredients are not justifiable.

Very disappointed about the visit to this pub. It looks good from the outside but the fact it was relatively empty when other pubs in the area were full (it was a Friday lunchtime) should have been a warning, but it didn't register. The food, although adequate, was very overpriced and the male serving staff sullen and non-engaging, although the lady who took our order was pleasant and helpful. We ordered several drinks, including a bottle of win, the cheapest on the list at £30, that wasn't the quality you'd expect from an £8 bottle from a supermarket. It came in a plain bottle rather than the original, which strongly hints at coming from a larger container. We should have asked to see the bottle but we didn't want to cause a fuss. The recommended wine was £72 a bottle. One of the male servers was spilling food on the floor as he brought it to the table and was dropping items into the table. The spillages were not cleaned up. When we asked for some toast to go with the terrines we'd ordered, none came included it took ten minutes to get a single small slice of cold toasted sourdough for two terrines. We ordered cheese for one of the desserts and it came with a compote that can only be described as cheap blackcurrant jam and five small oatcakes. The service and the food gave the impression that the bar was pinching every penny they could and that had a negative impact on the atmosphere and our enjoyment.

Stepping into this pub feels like being welcomed into a home where every dish is crafted with love and passion. The homemade food here is simply outstanding, but it’s the lamb shank that truly steals the show. Cooked to perfection, for 7 hours, each tender bite bursts with rich, hearty flavours that linger on the palate, creating a symphony of taste. The combination of succulent meat and expertly balanced seasonings makes this dish a must-try. Beyond the incredible food, the staff’s attentiveness elevates the entire dining experience. They greet you with warm smiles, anticipate your needs, and ensure you feel like the most important guest in the room. Whether you’re here for a casual meal or a special occasion, this pub offers not only fantastic homemade food but also a level of service that makes every visit memorable. An absolute gem that I can't recommend enough!

Very much a dining pub with an unusual and seasonal menu that changes daily. As others have commented, it is not inexpensive, but it is most definitely not pub grub (as one reviewer suggested) and you get what you pay for. It's best not to think of it as a pub really. Service is excellent, attentive without being overbearing. Would definitely go again but it's a bit more of an occasional place rather than a regular one because of the prices.

We had telephoned earlier in the day to enquire whether we could come for a post-theatre set of drinks and dessert. It was suggested that if we came along we would be welcomed without formal reservation. And, so it was. The server welcomed and seated us and took a drinks order (the whisky sour was well received) followed by our dessert choices, of which there were 2 cheese plates, alongside some ice cream. The food was very good, the service was excellent and it was pleasant being seated outside.

I have been to the Anchor & Hope many times over the last few years but not recently. It used to be fabulous both the food and service but sorry to say my last visit was truly awful. The food was ok but the service was the worst I have had for a long long while. We were served today for lunch, by a surly young woman who clearly hated her job. She walked away from us when we were mid sentence. Didn't bother to check back with us, take a drink order during our meal. We had to call out to another member of staff for drinks and the bill. She treated us with contempt and could not raise a smile or anything approaching friendly or accommodating service. So we left and decided to get coffee and dessert elsewhere. She chased us down the street yelling that we had not paid our bill, the most animated we had seen her during our whole encounter. I duly informed her that we had. She checked her device to see that was in fact the case and then turned her back and stomped off. No apology, no recognition of her mistake. What a shame to put all that effort into running what used to be a renowned great local business to have people like her ruining your reputation. We did have dialogue with other members of staff who were pleasant enough but she really spoiled the afternoon. Such a shame.

If you're looking for service with a smile, I'd try somewhere else. A misunderstanding by one of the bar staff around the opening time, meant I came face to face with quite honestly the rudest 'Manager' I've ever met. Abrasive, almost aggressive communication style and no sense of being polite or any ounce of customer service. He tried his best to ruin my sunny disposition. I'd avoid. I've eaten here before and the food is OK, but Waterloo has lots of lovely places and this is far from a warm environment.

First time here and it was absolutely rammed on a Wednesday night. Very loud and crowded. We were unfortunately sat at the worst table in the place. Waiting staff bumping into me everytime they squeezed between the bar and my table to get to other tables. Within ten minutes of sitting down we were asked at least 7 times if we were ready to order. I thought they were trying to turn the tables around (turns out they weren't) so this immediately rubbed me the wrong way. They continue to hover around the whole time. Its quite bizarre and un-nerving and the wrong side of attentive. Also letting in large groups of drunken men to stand at the bar inches from people trying to enjoy a meal just doesn't seem right either. I saw a couple nearby trying to have a romantic meal and there was little chance of that. The superior room next door near the kitchen looked much better though if you are going I'd ask to sit in there as I'm sure that's a much better experience. Food was very tasty although not hugely generous. Grouse lasagne is divine. How about a bit of bread with it or something rather than just a tiny salad? Luckily I was able to steal some of my friends chips.. Wine list is just bizarre with a £30 Beaujolais being sold for £125. Had a decent Cotes du rhone though. I think they need to decide whether they are 100% sitting and dining OR make some more room at the bar and have less tables. As it is its just too busy. Still they must be doing something right for it to be this packed.

Had a really, really super al fresco pre-cinema dinner here. Service was friendly, helpful and efficient. Food was excellent . I couldn’t fault my grilled Dover sole with lobster beurre blanc and creamed spinach- fish expertly cooked and the whole dish marrying perfectly. We’d preceded this with bread and olives and I have to say that the sourdough bread was superb. It was a quick dinner because we were attending a show and that was the reason for our declining starters and desserts, but I’ll make certain to return and address that issue. It’s a great place.

We'd heard good things about this pub but for a central London venue the menu seemed woefully old-fashioned. As a vegetarian, there were no main courses from which I could choose so I settled for two very ordinary starter salads - a beetroot salad and a pear salad with limp, tired leaves. The only protein I spotted was half an egg! My companions had slow cooked lamb that was poorly presented. The staff were disorganised and seemed constantly distracted. I felt better after I got home and had some protein... but as we spent £40 a head it was not exactly value for money.

Service was friendly and personal, without sacrificing any speed. All our food was truly excellent and justified any of the costs, and this was complemented by a fine wine selection. Furthermore the atmosphere felt at once casual and classy – high quality product in a relaxed setting. One downside was the deserts, which really didn't match how good the rest of the meal was – although the presentation of the chocolate mousse will live long in the memory. However the brightness of the person running the show (a lovely lady with red hair) meant that this did not effect our evening and this is certainly the best dining experience in that we have had in the area.

Many, many years ago this pub was at the vanguard of the gastro pub movement. There has been an intervening period of some 17 or 18 years since my last visit and this time it was a spontaneous stop for a quick lunch. Seated outside we felt sufficiently COVID protected and were able to relax to the max. We decided to opt for three small dishes and therefore made good headway into the starters. The food has a distinctive Italian feel and was delicious. Beetroot with capers and a mild creamy horseradish sauce was very good. The sardined grilled and topped with a lemony gremola was superb. There was also a wholesome and filling bean and pecorino dish (Macu). It was down with a beautiful bottle of Pinot Blanc from Alsace. Service was very good.

We knew that our booking was only for an hour and a half due to the tier 2 restrictions but we were very happy for that to be the case because restaurants like this need to survive this pandemic. We didn’t feel rushed and they timed everything to perfection. Every course was wonderful, we had the special starter of peppers with anchovies and capers, the tomatoes with mint and cream (my husband said it was the best starter he had ever had!) the lamb and the beef for main and a pear and almost tart to finish. The food (and the wine I might add) were first class and the atmosphere and service spot on. Highly recommended.

It's in a good location, about 5-10 minutes from Waterloo and the welcome was friendly and the place was buzzing. There was a slight mixup with the booking but easily sorted by helpful staff. We just had mains and enjoyed excellent lamb and beef and a really tasty chicken and foie gras pie. The side veg was good, the cabbage was quite well cooked and slathered in butter - very tasty! It was not cheap, but the quailty of the food meant it was perfectly reasonable and I'd be happy to go back again and recommend for others. Just bear in mind they don't do childrens options so maybe don't take younger children - the beef is rare which we adults thought was great but some younger of fussy kids may not go for.

We had an early booking which was good as the specials are limited and once gone they are gone. We had the lamb for two which was delicious followed by blood orange sorbet and stem ginger ice cream. Lovely pub.

Un vero ristorante inglese. Ottima cucina. Personale molto carino e disponibile.

Found us a table on a Saturday night although very full for 4 friends. Lovely service - staff friendly and helpful. Although full we could chat without shouting at each other. Nice meal. Really enjoyable evening. Would happily go back for casual meal with friends and family .

Overpriced and mediocre food. Combinations in meals didn't work together. Service was good though. I wouldn't recommend

As soon as we walked in the barman remembered us. We were a large party of writers who had come up to London for an event. The staff were more than helpful. The food is excellent. We are more than happy to return next year.

The food here is fresh always delicious I would call it Slow Food, as the priorities are fresh, seasonal food without pretension. The atmosphere is somewhat bohemian, very much a pub with a buzz. Service is very competent and friendly.

Great pub -great food- different and v well prepared with an open kitchen and on-the-ball serving staff who were personable. The double baked shuffle was a triumph and so was the pork. The unusual starter of smoked eel was superb. There is a daily special board. We ended with 1 scoop of ice-cream...homemade and to die for!!Not too noisy, close seating but it is a pub...no booking ...get there early or there is a wait!

After contacting the place to book a table we found that you arrive and they allocate tables on a first come basis. Thats fine as we arrived knowing that and were seated efficiently at 6pm before our 7;30pm Theatre show at The Old Vic. Service was excellent with a lovely waitress telling us about the food and the specials , seating us and advising on the wine. Sadly when the food came it was bland -really bland- and for what it was quite expensive. I have the black pudding which i hoped to be spicy and sell flavoured. Honestly with my eyes shut it could have been mash potato. The veggies were ok with average cabbage and lentils but again at £4 a go was poor.

In September we popped in here before a visit to the Old Vic for a drink and dessert because we had some time to kill. A member of staff (Josh) highly recommend the Baked poppy seed cheesecake with raspberry sauce which my husband opted for. I had a pie with fruit (might have been Greengage) with clotted cream.

The Anchor and Hope continues to serve exceptional food. My friend and I sat on a shared table for six which worked well. We started with globe artichokes - top quality and well prepared. Then skate served with plenty of spinach and a perfect sauce. A memorable dish. The waiter advised that we order a dish of potatoes to share which was a good call. The restaurant is quite noisy but sitting on the corner of the table helped. The staff are friendly - advice is always welcome from people who know the menu - and the food arrives quickly. We were lucky to arrive to a no queue situation on a Thursday evening but even when there is a queue the experience is worth the wait.

Not a roast as such but extremely delicious none the less. Well cooked, friendly service, some unusual combinations. The shared shoulder of lamb looked like the star option from our choices but no one was unhappy and clean plates all round.

Wandered in off the street for Sunday lunch, I requested a table but was offered a seat at the bar. I pushed as 60% of the tables were free and was eventually seated.

Great cocktails and a delicious chocolate mousse for dessert. We also didn't feel rushed to leave. Mains were very pricey and not big enough for the price, but the service was friendly.

a retro setting with a smelly car parked in premises each night to give retro look.food is same standard as car;who ever thought that a 60s fiat 500 was quality.talks the talk but forget anything other than a bottled beer;dont accept a glass unless you like petrol fumes
