Sat at the bar with my wife. Bartender offered us water, then did everything he could to utterly ignore us for 10 minutes, to include going to stand on the far side of the lounge. Even with our making eye contact with him. No one lifted a finger to help despite several staff members in the room. So sorry we forgot to wear our dinner jacket and ball gown to your bar. Don’t bother trying to get a drink here without gluing a Centurian Card to your forehead.

Fun bar with great decor. Though its called the American bar and has American decorations it still has that British feel. Excellent and friendly service. Indoor and outdoor seating. Extensive cocktail list. Great place to rest, chat and wet your whistle.

Decided to wait for a table outside, was told it would be about an hour. Was seated at an inside table and after about 10 minutes someone asked me for my drink order. Over the next hour was not asked once if I wanted another drink while the tables around me were repeatedly served. Only difference I could tell was I was drinking £15 cocktails by myself and not £30 whisky in a group. No one ever came by to update me on the wait for the outside table. Finally left.

An excellent venue with lovely food and excellent service throughout. The AB is a gem off the beaten track but once found provides a lovely distraction form the hustle and bustle around St. James's. The food is very good and reasonably priced. The service is excellent and we have always been well attended to even in busy times. Others may have had different experiences, looking at some reviews, but this is not ours and we frequent the place often. The ambiance is relaxed and somewhat sophisticated. If you haven't been here I thoroughly recommend it. And finally, we have all taken advantage of their cigar offerings and enjoyed some fine Havana's in their courtyard - indeed, look forward to the next one.

My recent visit to The American Bar at The Stafford London was an unforgettable experience, where the vibrant summer cocktails and exquisite all-day dining menu truly stole the show. Nestled in the heart of London, this iconic bar continues to impress with its blend of creativity and classic elegance. The summer cocktail menu is a masterclass in mixology. I had the pleasure of trying the Summer Solstice, a refreshing concoction of Hendrick’s Grand Cabaret Gin, Grand Marnier Cordon Rouge, peach, cherry and sage tea, orange blossom water, and soda. The blend was both aromatic and delightfully balanced. The Vortex was another standout, with Beluga Noble Vodka, St-Germain Elderflower Liqueur, raspberry, rhubarb, and champagne creating a sophisticated and effervescent delight. For something rich and tropical, the Bagasse, featuring Flor de Caña 12-Year-Old Rum, Two Drifters Spiced Pineapple Rum, Discarded Banana Peel Rum, mangosteen water, pineapple, and champagne, was simply divine. Lastly, the Coral Reef offered a refreshing twist with Snow Queen Organic Vodka, watermelon, Mancino Sakura Vermouth, hibiscus, mint, and yoghurt – a perfect sip for a warm summer day. The food was just as exceptional as the drinks. We started with the Oyster Rockefellers, which were perfectly cooked and bursting with flavour. For snacks, the crab doughnuts and crispy scampi were both delightful – the doughnuts were light and fluffy with a rich crab filling, while the scampi was crisp and tender. For the main course, the New York strip loin with onion rings was cooked to perfection, juicy and tender, and accompanied by the most satisfying onion rings. Finally, we indulged in desserts that were the perfect ending to a flawless meal: the New York style cheesecake was rich and creamy, and the crispy apple pie offered a perfect balance of tart and sweet. Overall, The American Bar at The Stafford London is a must-visit for anyone looking to indulge in expertly crafted cocktails and delicious food in an elegant setting. Whether you're a local or just visiting, this experience is not to be missed. I can't wait to return!

Wonderful bar, bad service. Bar manager was good to rectify.

Id only previously been to The Beaufort Bar but because I had my 15 year old son with me we had to go the The American Bar as it allows under 18’s. Wow it didn’t disappoint. The history pours from the walls. Rachel, our waitress was so friendly and welcoming and made us feel extra special as it was a birthday treat.

Very disappointing return visit, having frequented the American Bar on and off for the last 15 years. A good experience, starts with a welcome and the welcome we received was abysmal. The short waiter with highlighted hair was unfriendly, aloof and disinterested. I strongly urge management to retrain him as you are doing your customers and business a disservice with him in front of house. Once we were reluctantly seated, service was patchy. Having to wave visibly to get any attention and waiting for an unacceptable amount of time to receive drinks. The negronis we had were decent but the martinis were embarrassing; might as well have been water. Plus received with a twist when requested olives - A small issue but when you are charging top-end London prices, you should not be getting things like this wrong. The terrace area needs some maintenance. Brown dried liquid running down one of the walls. Shabby. Should be painted. I note that the last review mentions an obnoxious group smoking cigars. We encountered the same. A table nearby had four very scruffily dressed men who were smoking the most foul smelling cigars all evening - they were very friendly with the waiter aforementioned and seemed to be the only table that were getting his attention! Having settled the bill, we got up to leave and said waiter did his best to turn his back to us and not say goodbye. He really didn’t like us! We are a polite, professional group, so not sure what his problem was…c’est la vie! :) Not sure we’ll ever return. Shame as it was always a lovely hidden spot.

The first thing you notice when you step into the American Bar is the memorabilia. Photographs, many signed by notable figures, adorn the walls. Baseball caps and neckties hang from the ceiling. This is not a contrived decor. These authentic items inform guests of the bar's long and interesting history. This bar is particularly renowned for its cocktails and the choice is extensive. In addition to a list of their classic mixes, there is a seasonal menu. I visited on a warm, late summer day so the summer cocktail menu was a welcome sight. My choice, "A Day in Provence”, was fragrant, uplifting and refreshing and its flavours beautifully balanced. I’d visited the American Bar for a pre-lunch drink and with a leisurely meal ahead, I didn’t intend to linger. I thought the bar offered a cosy, inviting space so I'd be very happy to return, making it a destination in its own right. I can’t comment on the meals the bar serves - I ate in the ‘Game Bird’ restaurant - but details of the bar menu can be found on The Stafford Hotel’s website Cocktails are expensive - expect to pay £21 to £25 . In return for my expenditure, I enjoyed a drink conceived with an excellent palate and executed with skill and a comfortable space in which to enjoy it. A note about accessibility: The American Bar is situated on the ground floor of The Stafford Hotel (as are the ladies’ and gents’ toilets). There are three steps from street level into the hotel's main entrance on St James's Place. Wheelchair users can access the hotel via the rear entrance in Blue Ball Yard which is step-free.

The waiter was very rude. Didn’t expect such a dismal attitude from such a highly rated establishment.

Nearly fantastic, we had great service from all of the folks, drinks were great but you may say at a very premium price, the food was really good, exceptional. We really enjoyed. The biggest negative is that they permit cigar smoking in the outside area, yes its outside but the area is completely surrounded by 2 to 3 story building (hotel accommodation) as such the stinking smell of cigars lingers. We were seated at a great outside table enjoying great service and drinks when a person sat at next table and lite up a massive cigar, it absolutely stunk, it was foul. Here we are in 2024 and people are permitted to have these stinking things in a confined area. The hotel should seriously look at its policy to allow such a foul stinking habit in an area where normal people want to have a drink and dinner. after putting up with this foul stench for a few minutes, we asked to be moved inside, as did several other tables. we will return once they change the rules to keep these foul people away from a drinking and dining area.

I can honestly say that the Negroni Amphora was simply the best Negroni I’ve ever had! My husband’s martini was unique and delicious, too. A cozy spot - highly recommend!

A brilliant American Bar at the Stafford. Down an alleyway off Green Park. Left coming from tube. As it was the week we were celebrating the spies who helped us win the war. Specifically the amazing women. The one whose code name was Bronx. So I asked for a Bronx and was hugely impressed with the result. Far better than I managed on my own. Lovely staff. Will definitely keep going back. My brilliant son discovered this place.

It Is funny to go to the American bar here So we were suprised ať first. Bit finally it was a great experience And we had a good drinks.

The service and cocktails are superbe. The bar is located at the high class The Savoy hotel. The look is like a true American Bar. However, the cocktails are just too expensive. If you want to have some live piano music and do not take care of money, this is the place to be. They also serve food. The bar can get busy, so make sure to reserve a table.

We only had cocktails - no food. However the bar was wonderful, the service was very good, the cocktails were top notch and the cocktail waiters knew their business very well. Thoroughly recommended if you appreciate quality in an inviting environment.

Me and my brother very much enjoyed this place. The drinks were sooo good! And the bartenders were super friendly. One of them was telling us the story of the decorations that they have and just overall about the drink menu. We can for a few hours at night to enjoy some cocktails and it was a great place to finish the night.

It’s one of my fav places in London, tugged away, chilled and good vibes. Pleasant and unpretentious. Lovely cocktail menu, possible to customise to request.

5 stars in all aspects! Superb food with a very professional service. Superb wine list with fair prices. We were there for a business meeting and were recommended the place. This address has become one of our favorite in the Capital. I highly recommend the Rockefeller oysters and the Chicken Caesar Salad with a glass of Au Bon Climat Wild Boy Chardonnay.

We were trying to find somewhere to have a good cocktail, not too loud with a chilled atmosphere when we came across the American Bar. We found just what we were after, the staff were very friendly and accommodating, cocktails were good and they came with olives and smoked almonds. I recommend it for a night cap in the Center of town, as it stays open slightly later than most places around.

I only recently found out that there are a number of ‘American Bars’ attached to hotels in London, I had assumed it was only a Savoy thing. This particular American Bar was perfectly adequate but a little anonymous in my opinion and not necessarily worth a detour. There are better places to grab a cocktail in London. The cocktails themselves were fine but again, not amazing. If this bar was a state of the US it would be South Dakota.

Is it overpriced? Yes it is, because you’re in a hotel. Glassware is the only thing that’s beautiful in there. Service it’s inattentive and with planty of Italian ego in here with faces asking without the words why are you even here? I’m not willing to go back. OVERPRICED

The cocktail was straight up bad, overpriced, and the waiter was very condescending and borderline rude. Do not go if you are looking to have a good time.

I went to the American Bar with my son this evening. We arrived around 11:45pm and the waitress indicated that the bar was closing and we had 15 minutes to order. We sat down and she came over a few minutes later and pushed us for an order. The cocktail menu is extensive and there really was not any time to review it properly. She brought our drinks and then returned at 12:15 and said last orders and we quickly ordered another drink. It turned out that the bar closed at 1:00 but at 12:30 she was closing up around us and then turned off the music. We were misled from the beginning. In summation: the bar decoration is awesome; the drinks are okay and over priced; the service was terrible. It was clear that we were not really welcome and they could not wait to get rid of us. Will likely not return and would not recommend if you want to feel like a valued customer. Thebill was £94:00 for an hour and 4 mediocre drinks.

Interesting location. Reception was poor as the waiter did not speak much English. Service was slow & also affected by lack of English speech. The food was disappointing - eg the hamburger was tasteless and despite costing over £27 served without chips or salad garnish. We will not return!

The place was amazing for a drinks and specially for Cigars Smokers …but unfortunately in the End One of the stuff ( i think he’s italian with a highlighteed hair ) try to raise the bill up withhis own price of the drinks but we catch him in the End . So please be aware of that

We visit when we stay or not. Food first class, so is service. Can be a bit draughty in places.

Forget Dukes martini bar which is too expensive and run by a very rude and condescending maître d and come to the American Bar. The staff were friendly and welcoming, the service for our martini’s was quick and efficient and the martini’s were up there with the best. Definitely be going back and highly recommend this bar. Also you can sit inside or out - something you can’t do at the stuffy Dukes bar.

Great location - service excellent - very expensive - expected - however the quality of the food was terrible - fish and chips at £28.00 - just appalling my wife had the Cobb salad £25.00 - wish we had not bothered.

The cocktails were surprisingly innovative - a "standard" old fashioned was elevated with a trademark imprinted ice cube and creative presentation. The service was surprisingly subpar - with a pretentious and assuming attitude that bordered on uncivilized. Based on prior reviews, perhaps I visited on an "off day." But I truly thought an establishment associated with a five-star hotel would do better.

I attended with my pregnant wife for an after dinner drink and was rudely turned away by the person on the door, in spite of there being a a spare table for two in eye sight.

We were so looking forward to ending our 50th anniversary day out with cocktails in The American bar, however we had a really disappointing experience. We were happy to be seated at the bar but the waiters who were coming to collect drinks for other guests kept nudging into my back the entire time we sat at the bar. We would have stayed longer but the whole experience was ruined by this. Whilst we received apologies this wasn't the point . Either the bar is too small to seat guests, all 4 of us, or you should ensure your waiting staff are aware of the guests seated at bar. Mr Ramsey wouldn't accept this and I'm sure he wouldn't expect guests to. We were so disappointed.

Do not recommend. Cocktails are too sweet. Staff once given a negative feedback just don’t seem to care and acknowledge. I love whisky sour but here I got sugar syrup with chunk of ice

The “hostess” running the arrivals desk at The American Bar early this evening ( 6:30pm) was so rude and unwelcoming that we went elsewhere. Sadly we have encountered her before with the same experience. Never again. Had a lovely time at the neighbouring Dukes Bar which is where we will go in the future.

Lively spot hidden away in the mews of St. James area. Posh yet comfortably informal. American in the manner of days gone by, like The Jockey Club, or the 21. Corporate expense-account guys relaxing. Exquisite drinks. Fish & chips were amazing. Lovely staff.

Over the years we have stayed in the hosting hotel (The Stafford) many times - 3 in 2022. Each time the welcome in The American Bar has been warm, the service outstanding, and the drinks mixed to perfection by one of expert mixologists. Outside in a quiet courtyard there is a patio that has heaters and an awning for inclement weather. Inside there is an entry room with low tables, chairs and small couches and further on a room with the sit-at bar and more low table seating. In busy hours the inside seating is compact and one’s neighbor is close by. As an institution, the bar has a history dating back to WWII and before. Part of the history is a one of the many excellent house cocktails called a White Mouse, developed in recognition of a female WWII spy heroine who lived at The Stafford during the war and whose bust appears at the end of the bar. That drink could be a ‘must try’ for a first time visitor, or a regular. The range of cocktails is extensive, many developed under the watchful eyes of three head bar men over more than seventy years. Uniquely, each is presented in a piece of specialized glassware, perfect for the drink, and garnished with imagination, The bar also serves a range of snacks and light meals that we have always found to be ideally cooked and presented. Any negatives? Maybe two. Firstly, be sure to call ahead for a table reservation, almost mandatory for in door seating in busy hours. Secondly, well prepared cocktails and dedicated service come at a price, but the value is there.

Visited the American Bar, in August! Since then i am dreaming to go back there and order the same lobster cob! Absolutely yummy, lovely interior and awesome design!

I've been to The American Bar at The Savoy many times and it remains my favorite in the world. With that, The American Bar at The Stafford just entered my top-two list in London for their creativity, service, and charming atmosphere. On our visit to London , thought this American bar would be a nice place to have a couple of cocktails , after laying some followers for the Queen, at the floral tributes in the park. After following Google maps to this American bar, we must have arrived at the entrance to the Hotel linked to the American bar, I asked a staff member there if we were in the right place for the American bar, he said its through there and pointed the way,when we actual got to the bar, OMG !! we were greeted by a staff member there, that I can only describe he looked at us like we had just crawled out from the bottom of his shoe, I said is this the American bar ?? he said yes and we are fully booked, I said I didn't want a table,we only want a couple of cocktails at the bar, he said again, "we were fully booked, and the exist is there... I could see loads of empty tables and seats etc and empty tables and seats outside. I can only think that because we were dressed in T shirts etc,and not suits, he didn't want us in the place, ,he didn't mention any dress restrictions. and I didn't see any dress codes.

Excellent bar with decent cocktails and great service

We went to a hotel we know but to the outside area which we thought would be nice. We ordered lobster thermidor sub for 2 of us but when it arrived it was crayfish tails from a jar with tomato sauce on a minute bun for a mere £30.00 each! When I mentioned it to the staff they said yes we know you are not the first person to say that and we need to sort it out!! They did not remove any part of the food from our bill and we paid it because we know people involved. The lesson is if a food dish arrives that is not what is described on the menu send it back.! Finally is this what you would expect from a serious London hotel?? I don't think so

Impulsive lunch on a hot summer day was turned into an expensive negative experience. First we were seated in the "non smoke area" outside at our own wish. That turned to be the grey corner where cigar smoke arrived heavily from the more outside area. We asked to move to the more out and got a nice table. But cigar smoke was still all over - it seems to be the place where cigar smokers go to - but we did not know that and was not informed about that either when we pointed out the smell to the waiters. We ordered a Club sandwich with fries on the side, a ceasar salad without chicken - but got it with chicken -, a soda and a beer. Total cost GBP 70,31 - I reapeat GBP 70,31!!! I know we have higt inflation at the moment - but this is unfair high priced compared to what you get. So don't go here unless you don't care about the price, the service and cigar smoke!!

Glad to return again after the Summer Exhibition. Brilliant hot dog & few other bits & pieces between us. Should've tried one of the sundaes but too much. Service as usual excellent. Outside area an oasis in St James. Remains one of our favourite places.

We had food and drinks here for two people. The cocktails are great and presented very nicely, and there is a good wine list. We shared 3 dishes with two people and that was plenty for us, keeping in mind it is a bar menu. The food was lovely. We sat outside the whole evening, so cannot comment on the atmosphere outside. Would have give a higher ranking if there were not 2 glasses of wine on the bill that we did not consume. So we were almost overpaying £30 if we hadn’t paid attention. Please always check your bill when going here, as I have seen other reviews with similar experience. There was no excuse, and the staff member almost made us feel like we were wrong. Not a good attitude. Cannot say I would recommend.

Went to this delightful little bar yesterday by myself. Was greeted by what appeared an harassed waitress. She showed me my seated options in an abrupt annoyed manner. Once seated both waitresses ignored my attempts to order wine. The wine and food when I was eventually served was wonderful. When the male waiting staff took over they were so much more friendlier and attentive. I thought I should post this for any female solo visitors to inform them that they may not get such a great service from the female waiting staff.

The two stars are for the food and drinks both tasted pretty good (although the burger was overcooked) The price is high, but that's typically forgiven when service, food, and atmosphere are top notch. However, that's not the case here. The service here is the real shame, slow and forgetful. Afterwards we went to a local pub and gott better drinks at a 1/3 the cost. Don't waste you time (it'll take awhile) or money. They would be well served by actual visiting American Bars and seeing how the best don't let you sit waiting for anything. Travelers in London, you have been warned!

The cocktails were amazing and there was variety. Service was very good!

The drinks were fine, but nothing special, took 45 mins for a drink to come. Chased a few times but to my amusement was told “the bartenders are crying too” not worth the wait and my overpriced Amalfi spritz (21£) and tasted like a lemonade.

I went for the first time with a friend and promised an old-school bar experience; unfortunately not much of that was offered. New money looking for overpriced drinks in small quantities is what we found. The atmosphere was that of a badly renovated American sports club and the drinks were neither particularly inventive nor old-fashioned. Big ice cubes divert the attention from the short drink. The snacks were good (+1 star). If you’re looking for classic hotel bar, you’ll be better off at the American Bar in Paris.

CHECK YOUR INVOICE - All told, the restaurant stole 56 quid from me by adding wine that wasn' ordered and double charging for items. To add to that pain,the food was not stellar as would be expected for the prices charged. The cheeseburger (ordered med. rare) arrived well done. The roll was dry like the desert and just fell apart like a dirt clod crumbles to dust when squeezed. Ended up breaking the burger apart and just eating the dried out meat with the tomato. As the menu shows, the burger comes with fries. They were ok, but as can be seen on the invoice I was charged twice for them. A bottle of wine (Gavi di Gavi Tenuto) was also added to the invoice that was never ordered. The light was too dim to review the invoice and being such an upscale place, one wouldn't think they would pad the bill. Not a great experience. Just check your invoice.
