The staff were highly professional but at the same time friendly and very helpful. Food was excellent - recommend their burger. We will return!

It’s one of my fav places in London, tugged away, chilled and good vibes. Pleasant and unpretentious. Lovely cocktail menu, possible to customise to request.

5 stars in all aspects! Superb food with a very professional service. Superb wine list with fair prices. We were there for a business meeting and were recommended the place. This address has become one of our favorite in the Capital. I highly recommend the Rockefeller oysters and the Chicken Caesar Salad with a glass of Au Bon Climat Wild Boy Chardonnay.

We were trying to find somewhere to have a good cocktail, not too loud with a chilled atmosphere when we came across the American Bar. We found just what we were after, the staff were very friendly and accommodating, cocktails were good and they came with olives and smoked almonds. I recommend it for a night cap in the Center of town, as it stays open slightly later than most places around.

I only recently found out that there are a number of ‘American Bars’ attached to hotels in London, I had assumed it was only a Savoy thing. This particular American Bar was perfectly adequate but a little anonymous in my opinion and not necessarily worth a detour. There are better places to grab a cocktail in London. The cocktails themselves were fine but again, not amazing. If this bar was a state of the US it would be South Dakota.

Great hotel bar with friendly staff and a good bar menu. Courtyard tables if warm enough. Can book tables at certain times and this is recommended if possible.

Is it overpriced? Yes it is, because you’re in a hotel. Glassware is the only thing that’s beautiful in there. Service it’s inattentive and with planty of Italian ego in here with faces asking without the words why are you even here? I’m not willing to go back. OVERPRICED

Charged over £20 for a basic cocktail. The outdoor environment was fair but somehow there were so many flies.

The cocktail was straight up bad, overpriced, and the waiter was very condescending and borderline rude. Do not go if you are looking to have a good time.

I went to the American Bar with my son this evening. We arrived around 11:45pm and the waitress indicated that the bar was closing and we had 15 minutes to order. We sat down and she came over a few minutes later and pushed us for an order. The cocktail menu is extensive and there really was not any time to review it properly. She brought our drinks and then returned at 12:15 and said last orders and we quickly ordered another drink. It turned out that the bar closed at 1:00 but at 12:30 she was closing up around us and then turned off the music. We were misled from the beginning. In summation: the bar decoration is awesome; the drinks are okay and over priced; the service was terrible. It was clear that we were not really welcome and they could not wait to get rid of us. Will likely not return and would not recommend if you want to feel like a valued customer. Thebill was £94:00 for an hour and 4 mediocre drinks.

Interesting location. Reception was poor as the waiter did not speak much English. Service was slow & also affected by lack of English speech. The food was disappointing - eg the hamburger was tasteless and despite costing over £27 served without chips or salad garnish. We will not return!

The place was amazing for a drinks and specially for Cigars Smokers …but unfortunately in the End One of the stuff ( i think he’s italian with a highlighteed hair ) try to raise the bill up withhis own price of the drinks but we catch him in the End . So please be aware of that

We visit when we stay or not. Food first class, so is service. Can be a bit draughty in places.

Forget Dukes martini bar which is too expensive and run by a very rude and condescending maître d and come to the American Bar. The staff were friendly and welcoming, the service for our martini’s was quick and efficient and the martini’s were up there with the best. Definitely be going back and highly recommend this bar. Also you can sit inside or out - something you can’t do at the stuffy Dukes bar.

Lovely but be prepared to spend

Great location - service excellent - very expensive - expected - however the quality of the food was terrible - fish and chips at £28.00 - just appalling my wife had the Cobb salad £25.00 - wish we had not bothered.

The cocktails were surprisingly innovative - a "standard" old fashioned was elevated with a trademark imprinted ice cube and creative presentation. The service was surprisingly subpar - with a pretentious and assuming attitude that bordered on uncivilized. Based on prior reviews, perhaps I visited on an "off day." But I truly thought an establishment associated with a five-star hotel would do better.

I attended with my pregnant wife for an after dinner drink and was rudely turned away by the person on the door, in spite of there being a a spare table for two in eye sight.

We were so looking forward to ending our 50th anniversary day out with cocktails in The American bar, however we had a really disappointing experience. We were happy to be seated at the bar but the waiters who were coming to collect drinks for other guests kept nudging into my back the entire time we sat at the bar. We would have stayed longer but the whole experience was ruined by this. Whilst we received apologies this wasn't the point . Either the bar is too small to seat guests, all 4 of us, or you should ensure your waiting staff are aware of the guests seated at bar. Mr Ramsey wouldn't accept this and I'm sure he wouldn't expect guests to. We were so disappointed.

Do not recommend. Cocktails are too sweet. Staff once given a negative feedback just don’t seem to care and acknowledge. I love whisky sour but here I got sugar syrup with chunk of ice

The “hostess” running the arrivals desk at The American Bar early this evening ( 6:30pm) was so rude and unwelcoming that we went elsewhere. Sadly we have encountered her before with the same experience. Never again. Had a lovely time at the neighbouring Dukes Bar which is where we will go in the future.

These are the best cocktails in London. The bar has a very cosy and inviting atmosphere, and the service is phenomenal. I would give it 6 starts if I could.

First time for me here for an important business meeting. Very courteous manager seated us at the bar. interesting to see the staff work and create amazing cocktails. Great tasting of a classic cocktail but here served in a fabulous way.

Nice location and setting but the service is slow and not up to scratch. Several mistakes were made on drinks orders.

Lively spot hidden away in the mews of St. James area. Posh yet comfortably informal. American in the manner of days gone by, like The Jockey Club, or the 21. Corporate expense-account guys relaxing. Exquisite drinks. Fish & chips were amazing. Lovely staff.

Over the years we have stayed in the hosting hotel (The Stafford) many times - 3 in 2022. Each time the welcome in The American Bar has been warm, the service outstanding, and the drinks mixed to perfection by one of expert mixologists. Outside in a quiet courtyard there is a patio that has heaters and an awning for inclement weather. Inside there is an entry room with low tables, chairs and small couches and further on a room with the sit-at bar and more low table seating. In busy hours the inside seating is compact and one’s neighbor is close by. As an institution, the bar has a history dating back to WWII and before. Part of the history is a one of the many excellent house cocktails called a White Mouse, developed in recognition of a female WWII spy heroine who lived at The Stafford during the war and whose bust appears at the end of the bar. That drink could be a ‘must try’ for a first time visitor, or a regular. The range of cocktails is extensive, many developed under the watchful eyes of three head bar men over more than seventy years. Uniquely, each is presented in a piece of specialized glassware, perfect for the drink, and garnished with imagination, The bar also serves a range of snacks and light meals that we have always found to be ideally cooked and presented. Any negatives? Maybe two. Firstly, be sure to call ahead for a table reservation, almost mandatory for in door seating in busy hours. Secondly, well prepared cocktails and dedicated service come at a price, but the value is there.

Visited the American Bar, in August! Since then i am dreaming to go back there and order the same lobster cob! Absolutely yummy, lovely interior and awesome design!

I've been to The American Bar at The Savoy many times and it remains my favorite in the world. With that, The American Bar at The Stafford just entered my top-two list in London for their creativity, service, and charming atmosphere. I look forward to returning and recommend you check it out for yourself. :)

On our visit to London , thought this American bar would be a nice place to have a couple of cocktails , after laying some followers for the Queen, at the floral tributes in the park. After following Google maps to this American bar, we must have arrived at the entrance to the Hotel linked to the American bar, I asked a staff member there if we were in the right place for the American bar, he said its through there and pointed the way,when we actual got to the bar, OMG !! we were greeted by a staff member there, that I can only describe he looked at us like we had just crawled out from the bottom of his shoe, I said is this the American bar ?? he said yes and we are fully booked, I said I didn't want a table,we only want a couple of cocktails at the bar, he said again, "we were fully booked, and the exist is there... I could see loads of empty tables and seats etc and empty tables and seats outside. I can only think that because we were dressed in T shirts etc,and not suits, he didn't want us in the place, ,he didn't mention any dress restrictions. and I didn't see any dress codes.

Excellent bar with decent cocktails and great service

We went to a hotel we know but to the outside area which we thought would be nice. We ordered lobster thermidor sub for 2 of us but when it arrived it was crayfish tails from a jar with tomato sauce on a minute bun for a mere £30.00 each! When I mentioned it to the staff they said yes we know you are not the first person to say that and we need to sort it out!! They did not remove any part of the food from our bill and we paid it because we know people involved. The lesson is if a food dish arrives that is not what is described on the menu send it back.! Finally is this what you would expect from a serious London hotel?? I don't think so

Impulsive lunch on a hot summer day was turned into an expensive negative experience. First we were seated in the "non smoke area" outside at our own wish. That turned to be the grey corner where cigar smoke arrived heavily from the more outside area. We asked to move to the more out and got a nice table. But cigar smoke was still all over - it seems to be the place where cigar smokers go to - but we did not know that and was not informed about that either when we pointed out the smell to the waiters. We ordered a Club sandwich with fries on the side, a ceasar salad without chicken - but got it with chicken -, a soda and a beer. Total cost GBP 70,31 - I reapeat GBP 70,31!!! I know we have higt inflation at the moment - but this is unfair high priced compared to what you get. So don't go here unless you don't care about the price, the service and cigar smoke!!

Glad to return again after the Summer Exhibition. Brilliant hot dog & few other bits & pieces between us. Should've tried one of the sundaes but too much. Service as usual excellent. Outside area an oasis in St James. Remains one of our favourite places.

We had food and drinks here for two people. The cocktails are great and presented very nicely, and there is a good wine list. We shared 3 dishes with two people and that was plenty for us, keeping in mind it is a bar menu. The food was lovely. We sat outside the whole evening, so cannot comment on the atmosphere outside. Would have give a higher ranking if there were not 2 glasses of wine on the bill that we did not consume. So we were almost overpaying £30 if we hadn’t paid attention. Please always check your bill when going here, as I have seen other reviews with similar experience. There was no excuse, and the staff member almost made us feel like we were wrong. Not a good attitude. Cannot say I would recommend.

Went to this delightful little bar yesterday by myself. Was greeted by what appeared an harassed waitress. She showed me my seated options in an abrupt annoyed manner. Once seated both waitresses ignored my attempts to order wine. The wine and food when I was eventually served was wonderful. When the male waiting staff took over they were so much more friendlier and attentive. I thought I should post this for any female solo visitors to inform them that they may not get such a great service from the female waiting staff.

The two stars are for the food and drinks both tasted pretty good (although the burger was overcooked) The price is high, but that's typically forgiven when service, food, and atmosphere are top notch. However, that's not the case here. The service here is the real shame, slow and forgetful. Afterwards we went to a local pub and gott better drinks at a 1/3 the cost. Don't waste you time (it'll take awhile) or money. They would be well served by actual visiting American Bars and seeing how the best don't let you sit waiting for anything. Travelers in London, you have been warned!

The cocktails were amazing and there was variety. Service was very good!

The drinks were fine, but nothing special, took 45 mins for a drink to come. Chased a few times but to my amusement was told “the bartenders are crying too” not worth the wait and my overpriced Amalfi spritz (21£) and tasted like a lemonade.

I went for the first time with a friend and promised an old-school bar experience; unfortunately not much of that was offered. New money looking for overpriced drinks in small quantities is what we found. The atmosphere was that of a badly renovated American sports club and the drinks were neither particularly inventive nor old-fashioned. Big ice cubes divert the attention from the short drink. The snacks were good (+1 star). If you’re looking for classic hotel bar, you’ll be better off at the American Bar in Paris.

CHECK YOUR INVOICE - All told, the restaurant stole 56 quid from me by adding wine that wasn' ordered and double charging for items. To add to that pain,the food was not stellar as would be expected for the prices charged. The cheeseburger (ordered med. rare) arrived well done. The roll was dry like the desert and just fell apart like a dirt clod crumbles to dust when squeezed. Ended up breaking the burger apart and just eating the dried out meat with the tomato. As the menu shows, the burger comes with fries. They were ok, but as can be seen on the invoice I was charged twice for them. A bottle of wine (Gavi di Gavi Tenuto) was also added to the invoice that was never ordered. The light was too dim to review the invoice and being such an upscale place, one wouldn't think they would pad the bill. Not a great experience. Just check your invoice.

Served by two waiters, one good, one bad! The cocktail tastes just ok, but somewhat overpriced! The worst thing happened when I decided to check out, when I found there is one thing on our bill yet we didn’t order at all! It worth more than 40 pounds. Can’t believe they would make such a huge mistake, really unprofessional!

I was very disappointed with the American Bar, huge reputation. The quality of the food and drink was poor for such an establishment. The service jolly but erratic, to the point where one of the waiters set one of the canopy’s on fire by the outside heater. Things not available on the menu, really unprofessional. For me, this place looks fantastic externally but lacks quality.

A very excellant bar with stupendious drinks and excellant service. A bit of a hidden gem, and also (though I didn't sit there on this occasion) a decet outside area, too.

A very average bar in looks and experience with staff seemingly more interested in their own interactions than their customers'. Firstly the bill - 3 g&t and 6 small bottles of Peroni = £124. Now I don't mind paying that, and have many times in the past, but that's a price point where I expect a special atmosphere, seriously good service and top notch surroundings. This has none of those. The doormen at the hotel side were lovely, so that was a good start. Beyond that, the bar is very ordinary. We were near an electric door that kept opening automatically and as there is no porch area nor any attempt to cover the opening through perhaps a curtain, every time it opens you're greeted by an icy blast of cold air until some time later it decides to close again. The staff were more interested in chatting among themselves about whatever issues were going on around them without any appreciation that customers shouldn't be aware of this - take those conversations out of the bar area please - again, I wouldn't ordinarily care but at this price point my expectations are different (much higher!). We won't be returning. You'd be better off round the corner at the Ritz, Mr Fogg's or Claridge's (or in fact most of the other local establishments) where you'll find a significantly superior experience at roughly the same price point.

Great dining and drinks on the terrace

The class act of a bar for those in the know. This is for the St. James’s regular business executive; deals are struck over Negronis. In the summer make sure to sit in the courtyard (a former stable mews). This has been a long term Central London fixture and will never disappoint. Wearing a suit to go here is a good idea.

Had a late lunch on checking in to the hotel. Music loud and intrusive, food average and overpriced. Pet hate: prevailing scent of cheap synthetic air freshener, when Floris would be more appropriate in a hotel of these purported standards.
