The American Bar in Belfast

So good to be back and there’s been changes! A beer garden out the back doubling the space, a kitchen so that they now provide food from 4pm Thursday to Saturdays. Still able to bring our food in from Benny’s Cafe next door. Great pints. Really chatty staff as always and a regular Friday hub for the workers

Tried Phillip McCrilly's meals and sandwiches held here every Sunday during this Feb & I loved it so much I came down the following weekend & brought my parents who also loved it. Really delicious, innovative dishes, service with a smile & a warm pub atmosphere - what more could you want!

Visited with sports team chums to try Phil's Sunday takeover. The food was outstanding - with service to match, excellent all round. Really great range of Italian food on offer and was only sad I couldn't eat one of everything. Highly recommend.

Food here is usually great, but wasn't at all impressed on Sunday past. Seafood chowder with no fish and no service! Disappointing.

have been before to listen to a band who we follow.friendly bar staff in bar and also upstairs in the function room food not bad its not 5 star but good enough.plenty of craft beers if you are into them.overall nice afternoon will be back

Great pub, good atmosphere, never too loud but always something happening. Decent beer selection too. This is how a night in the pub should be.

Very friendly place. A bit run down, but it is supposed to be so alright. Bar staff great. Dog friendly, a big plus. No food was being served when I was there, but they suggested getting food from next door, which turned out to be delicious.

The American bar is a hidden gem. Situated in 'Sailor town' in on the edge of the city centre the American has a relaxed charm and easy going atmosphere missing in many other pubs.

Went to The American for a retirement doo for a colleague, arrived at 2pm with approx 40 people, had drinks and bar food ,everything was good until a member of the bar staff took umbrage with one of my colleagues and stated he no longer wished to serve him ,I asked if I could mediate and ascertain what the problem was and if my colleague was out of order I would request them to leave, I was given no reasonable explanation why my colleague was not being served and it then escalated to the group not being served, no harsh words were exchanged but I feel it could have been dealt with better and a good evening out could have been an occasion to remember

Don't expect bells and whistles here, but what you will get is a bar with real character. Food is good comfort food of excellent quality (if you don't mind paper plates & wooden cutlery)

Had a great evening watching Jet Black Tulips play upstairs. Great atmosphere, good prices, friendly staff. Good spaces both inside and out and great atmosphere. Nice wee venue and bar

Un pub authentique un peu en dehors du centre avec des gens du coin.

This place is so underrated, lovely staff and excellent beer garden. This is the most dog friendly place in belfast. There were two 8 week old puppies when i was there on Sunday and loads of other dogs, highly recommended 👌 Guiness is the cheapest in Belfast also

Great corner pub in the Clarendon Dock area. Always something interesting on tap and friendly bar staff. Comfortable sitting inside and there's a beer garden out the back. There's a kitchen but I haven't tried the food - next time! Update: have since tried the food, several times! Good, speedy and well-priced pub food and if dessert is your thing, the Basque Cheesecake is excellent.

If ur visiting Belfast come hear for the real atmosphere. Love the vibe in here!

Haven't had food so therefore didn't rate it properly (sorry in advance!) But the American Bar supported our local rock band venture by letting us use space and helped with anything we needed! 10/10 would highly recommend!

A bit out of the way in Sailortown, but, well worth visiting for it's Music Sessions. Great bar staff and Open Mic on Sunday evenings. Also great live Music Gigs in the upper room area on Saturday afternoons and sometimes during the week. Also has a lovely Beer Garden. 👌🎤🎸🎶

First visit on a Saturday afternoon for the music - had lunch downstairs in the bar - food was great- delicious piping hot and quick service. Definitely worth a visit.

Went for a comedy night with friends and it was a brilliant night. Food is really good and not overly priced.staff are friendly and all round a great place to be.everyone is so inviting. Will definitely be back

Decent food, reasonably priced beer, friendly staff. Music upstairs was good. Only reason it's not 5 star is the little stools upstairs are uncomfortable after about an hour, definitely have to get up and stretch

What a great little pub out of the town centre. Good ales and excellent homemade food.

The sister pub of the Sunflower, great for all the same reasons. A little out of the way from the city centre but the walk is only about 15 minutes from Writers Square beside the Ulster University campus. Some of the best pub food you will ever eat with a weekly rotating menu. Try the chees toasties, they're perfect. Great live music, great pub, great everything. Always a pleasure to drink here.

What a find , , , a dear Friend says, "I've been here before, let's try it, cos they serve craft ale" Friday night about 8pm, not too busy and they serve "tapas" til 10pm. On Saturday afternoon there's Blues band upstairs. Nice atmosphere, no bad stuff, mature clientele , , , what's not to like ? 😉

What a great place. Upstairs is a small intimate friendly space, ideal for listening to live bands playing righteous sounds. Last week featured the magnificent Villiers and the villains. The perfect venue for a perfect Saturday afternoon scoop or two. Highly recommended. Try the Guinness.

Great food and chat. Seek out this part of Belfast if you want real pubs and you'll not be disappointed. Obviously being shouted out as one of the best in the region by The Observer Food Monthly has gone to their heads!! Not. Still lovely people serving reasonably priced pints from global and local brewers alongside great food. Menu changes but you'll really want the Brisket Chilli or the Cheese Toastie which are constants.

One of the best bars in Belfast, the other being its sister bar The Sunflower. The food in the American is perfectly pitched, freshly cooked and filling. Great beer, great service, great food. The final string in the bow is the short walk from the train station and its proximity to the cycle pathway from the North shore.

We've been to the American Bar before and always enjoyed it. Because the weather has been so hot, the upstairs room where the entertainment is, was just too hot. Also we were sitting on stools which is not comfortable as we both has arthritis in our backs and need a seat with support. We will be back but next time be quicker up the stairs for a seat against the wall 👍

The last up on my little sunday crawl led me off the beaten track and down to the dock area to sample this watering hole. Even though coving is covered with football scarves from around the world it doesn’t really give off the “We are a solely a football boozer” and when you walk upstairs you see what else they have to offer. On my visit there were a bunch of young lads who hired the upstairs to play computer games but it also doubles up as a theatre space where @pintsized_productions_ni put on regular shows.

A real gem within Belfast, a little off the beaten track but you won't be disappointed. Live music at the weekends with food at the rear plus beer garden. Definitely value for money which is hard to find these days and the pints of Guinness are second to none.

We spent over a month travelling through Ireland and the UK and this was one of our favorite bars among many, many. Super friendly atmosphere, music, good food and a great local vibe. Excellent curried chicken pie. It is a little bit out of the way from the downtown hubbub but worth the effort. The quintessential Irish pub!!

Staff and regulars are always friendly and have the best selection of beer in the city. The addition of the best cheese toasty I've ever had! Massive thanks to Justin and his team next door :) this place is an absolute must!

Classic, traditional pub, solid range of beers and spirits. Great outdoor smoking area. Really good food. Surprisingly good! I haven't drank in this part of town since the Rotterdam and Pat's Bar closed. I'm definitely not leaving so long until my next visit.

We loved it here! We came for dinner (they have food from Thursday to Sunday, if I understand correctly) and some drinks. It would be even better, if the kitchen would give real plates and cutlery instead of single-use stuff. But the staff was super cute and they were fine using our lunchbox for the vegan antipasti :-) and there are more vegan options available!

A hidden gem! A bit off the beaten track, you aren't just going to stumble across this place, but it is worth making the effort to visit. Fantastic range of beer, food is excellent and perfect for sharing and both staff and clientele are fantastic.

Simply put.....the best place in town.

First visit to this bar in about 30yrs and would highly recommend it to all, food is amazing and to the prices, we even got to buy 2 loaves of sourdough Bread to take home which I finished off today. The bar has a beer garden which has plenty of room for this time of the year , we arrived at 3pm and had a selection of food, food I have not seen on a menu before, everything was delicious, then a while later we had another go at the rest of the menu , wow it was all excellent, a chef with a really great mind has this menu down to a tee, then before we left we had 2 desserts and the chocolate slice will blow your mind, I’d love his recipe , we left around 10pm and walked through the bar , where people were playing instruments in the corner, fabulous traditional bar with first class snack menu. I will definitely be back here for both alcohol and food , and the sourdough to take home 10/10

I go here regularly with my mates, the food is so good and at a decent price (only served thursday to sunday). The staff are friendly and the drink is good. Cant recommend it enough, has become our new local since moving in nearby.
