The Amble Inn in St Albans

We were looking for somewhere dog friendly to have a drink and something to eat after picking our son up from Luton called to check on bringing our puppy and booked a table. Was advised they were decorating at front and to use side entrance, there was a birthday party in the covered in area by side door but no issue. All staff were extremely helpful. The menus were on the table, I had the chilli/garlic prawns for the starter, and my son had the panner tikka. Main couse's classic cheeseburger, mexicana burger & lamb shish, my son also had a side of mac n cheese. My wife & son did comment on the way home there burgers were a bit overdone, overall found the whole evening very good.

Staff and owner is very friendly. Excellent customer service and ambience. Good place for fun and get together👍❤️🍺

Busy pub in Harpenden. Service was very slow, it took nearly an hour from ordering for our food to arrive. Despite the wait I did enjoy my meal and the staff were friendly but there weren't loads of people eating, so not really sure why the food took so long. The ceiling has twinkling lights which is very pretty and there is a covered/marquee area on the back of the pub for private parties etc. Smallish carpark right outside.

Absolutely perfect experience, Sarah catered for us with her usual friendly and professional way. Nothing was too much trouble, as usual, and despite being very busy the food came out quickly and piping hot. The cuts of meat were spectacular, we were amazed at the quality and especially quantity - cooked to perfection. Hand on my heart, this was one of the best roasts I have had and I encourage you to experience it for yourself. By the way, the amount we spent was grossly inflated by a boozy afternoon!

Amble Inn and their team is a great local choice for cosy cold days or great BBQ and beer garden on summer days, always our family favourite .

I had a 50th party at the Amble Inn, great venue and the team were fantastic. They went out of their to make it a really special, the food and service was amazing. Would recommend as a private party venue.

Ordered off uber eats. Always sceptical of pubs that do delivery. Ordered pork belly bites, nachos, halloumi and chicken wings. Absolutely blown away. Everything was fresh, hot, tasty, massive portions for the price, lots of extras like dips, and offering £5 off on uber eats. Could charge alot more for their food as its delicious and will certainly be back

The Amble Inn is a great place to come - For food, drinks, live events, and even Karaoke / Discos - The staff are so friendly and very welcoming. The food is so good, we had the chicken wings and the chicken burger and it was so lovely ! Great range of drinks, and a LOVELY Pinot Blush ! Always a winner in my eyes ! (ha ha) The outside space has been transformed ! It's such a great place to visit ! I would highly recommend for everyone ! 🙂

We had a lovely experience when booking last minute for a family birthday. The staff are so friendly and welcoming. We booked for 12 adults and a toddler , nothing was to much trouble. They gave us a table in the outside covered area which is heated, none of us were cold. It's great for familys with little ones. The roast was really good, beef cooked to perfection, those that had the Gammon said it was really nice. The roast potatoes were really tasty and the veg was fresh and nicely cooked. We had a lovely afternoon/ evening, thank you Amble Inn. 😊

A good option for families with children.

I went to The Amble Inn for a drink, while my granddaughter was at her 1 hour dance class nearby. I only had a drink. Being a Friday evening about 5pm, I found it was quite noisy from groups of guys chatting over their after work drinks. There are no soft furnishings, so it's quite echoy, in my opinion.

We have been to the Amble Inn a few times for food and to use the lovely bouncy castle - both have been great and it is very family friendly and reasonably priced. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend it on that basis alone! Another reason to support it is that this weekend my husband was crossing the road just outside the Amble Inn with my two young children when my son fell off his bike. Two of the bar staff at the Amble Inn saw this happen and rushed outside. They helped my husband to get both children out of the road and then cleaned my son’s grazed elbow and gave him a plaster, offered him a drink and made him feel better. We were so touched by their kindness and generosity and this is exactly the sort of caring, community-minded local business that we are happy to support. We would really encourage others to do the same!

A hidden gem. Lovely big garden, and so kid friendly as they have a bouncy castle out through summer. Staff go above and beyond to accommodate. Big bbq area too. Highly recommend

Amazing atmosphere, friendly and lovely staff, super tasty strawberry daiquiri, there is band playing on saturday evening and also doing karaoke nights, this is our favourite pub with my husband, thank you 🥰

For me the best pub in Harpenden! If you are looking for reasonable prices, excellent service and fantastic food this is the place to be. Kids will be delighted with the large garden kitted out with a bouncy castle. There's an outdoor bbq and bar to keep the legals happy. As aforementioned the staff are fantastic and go beyond to make you feel welcome. In short a great family friendly pub that you should give a go.

Nice friendly place with free parking, car park is not massive. Children are welcome with a free bouncy castle to occupie them. Food was delicious and good value

My partner, son and I went there for lunch on Wednesday 1st August 2023 and they had a bouncy castle in the garden that our son went on and loved it. We then went in for food and the server was so helpful sorting out what we wanted. We had a kids burger and chips for our son, then for my partner and I we had a portion of each of BBQ and peri peri chicken wings and a portion of halloumi fries for starters and then I had a beef burger, chips and a pint as that was the Wednesday deal and my partner had a southern fried chicken burger, chips and a pint (again the deal) for our mains. Although there was a bit of a wait for the food it was well worth it everything was cooked to perfection and so tender and the salad items were very fresh. The only issue we had was that the chicken burger was little peppery and that was probably just the coating and as they had the option of a grilled or southern fried breast we will try the grilled one next time

Great place, enjoyed a crisp, cold pint on a sunny day after a run from Luton. Worth noting that they don't serve food all days of the week, shame as was starving and the menu looked really good. I'll have to come back and try another time. Friendly employees reasonable pricing, what more could you want? 5 stars!

Best BBQ food in Hertfordshire. Friendly atmosphere, fantastic owners and great staff. Always made to feel welcome and a valued customer, I encourage everyone to try this pub when visiting Harpenden

I don't recognise this place from the positive reviews. We used to go a few years ago and found it a nice, relaxing place. However, our first visit for a while and we won't be going back. Several things missing from the menu, which we weren't told about until we had collected the full order; no allergy menu we could look at (in fact, first server didn't even understand what we meant by a dairy allergy); wanted to see ingredients list, but the kitchen staff couldn't confirm that the sauces / marinades in the bottles were the original ones for which the written ingredients refer. Some food didn't arrive, which we reminded the waitress about three times over about 45 mins, to be told that it was being cooked now and would be the next thing out. She delivered the exact same dishes to other tables (ordered later), while we still waited! Eventually, went to the kitchen ourselves to find out that they had no idea we were still waiting for food. BBQ food was ok; nothing special.

We had a great afternoon at The Amble yesterday - great food, drink and service and watching local kids perform in their band was a highlight, a real treat!

Great little pub with outside area for kids. They played on the bouncy castle and enjoyed the kids menu. Food was simple and good. Fried chicken burger and grilled chicken wings stood out. Will definitely go back again with the kids this summer.

Great pub in a good location, staff are super friendly. Food is lovely and bbq in summer months is a great addition. Bonus of an outside bar in summer. Event nights are great with live singers and karaoke nights. Overall a fantastic addition to the community and our favourite local pub!

Our lovely local pub with good food choices and drinks. Amazing beer garden with BBQ and bouncy castle on weekends, karaoke and live music events, good service. Always our choice for a meal or just a drink after a walk on Batford Springs Nature reserve.

Stopped here for a tea and coffee with family to quickly change into posh wedding clothes ( at another venue) best tea I've had that I didn't make myself. Staff were very friendly and helpful.

Whent today for a coffee was a nice feeling and friendly attitude, despite the fact that they did have huge repairs, and lots of staff around, for the outside area to be redone. In my opinion, very soon (after renovation) will be a lovely place to visit considering the park nearby, which is huge and lovely to have a walk around!

A family run pub, warm friendly atmosphere. Team are very attentive. Their roast dinners are delicious 😋. I often pop in for a coffee ☕ after walking my dog. I highly recommend this pub.

Outstanding high quality food, expertly cooked The Sunday roast Sirlion beef just melts in your mouth, the roast spuds light and fluffy inside with a crisp outer, even the gravy is divine. I've also had one of their hand made beef burger it was so big and absolutely packed with flavour. I would recommend coming here to eat, you won't be left wanting The staff are so friendly and accommodating a real pleasure

I have been wanting to visit for a long time but hadn’t got round to It but it was well worth the wait, I had the halloumi fritters followed by the salmon and it was all delicious. I can’t wait to return and try some other dishes. All staff were really welcoming and friendly. Great little find.

The new menu is fantastic, can’t wait to try everything. Visited last week and had the mushroom truffle risotto and the salmon poisson du jour - both were a sensation to the taste buds. Fantastic little family run Pub with huge garden and tasty outdoor BBQ. The Burgers are Amazing!!! Always has a great vibe and the special events held throughout the year are a must.

We received the bill which had a £9 discretionary tip added..we decided to instead give £5 after a VERY disappointing lunch. The waitress took much offence and actually questioned us on this, in such a rude, unprofessional and abrupt manner that took us massively by surprise. On reflection this was totally out of order, especially as we were polite and friendly, even during our not so great meal when I’m sure others not as easy going as us would’ve complained and left. We didn’t bother to disclose prior to that that actually the pork was dry, burger just about warm and dry the fries almost potatoless and the basil sugar that accompanied the lemon tart tasted like it was only used to use up gone off basil. We just got on and ate what was a very average meal, but we’re not picky, we were hungry and just glad to be on our first meal out since lockdown was lifted, sat in a lovely garden area. We were just trying to have a nice afternoon. Surely a large tip is not deserved if there are so many disappointments in a meal? Even then we still gave over half the discretionary tip, and really, upon the waitresses reaction (who I think is the manager), we should’ve withdrawn the whole thing. As polite, friendly customers, that never want to kick up a fuss as we’re quite understanding, we really didn’t deserve that reaction and upon reflection we should not have accepted the situation as easily as we did. After taking many friends and family here over the years, we’re so disappointed!

My wife and a visited recently and were very excited having read all the other reviews. We shared the pork rib starter which was lovely but then both thought the burgers were very disappointing. Over cooked and the “brioche” bun was nothing of the sort. Will probably go back to try some of the other dishes but won’t be holding my breath.

Absolutely love this place! The food is always fantastic and there is always a lovely atmosphere. We regularly take friends and parents as you can always be confident the food will be great and service will be perfect.

What a gem: the perfect combination of fantastic French bistro food, friendly neighbourhood pub and great outside space. We find ourselves returning again and again. Sometimes for an upmarket couples meal, sometimes for a bbq meal or roast lunch with all the family and sometimes for a few drinks with friends in the garden. Harpenden is very lucky to have this great bistro on its doorstep.

Mum, dad and two boys (13 and 11) have just had a very nice Saturday evening out at the Bistro. It was our first visit to to the Bistro and it did not disappoint. Sat outside (Covid restrictions) and totally enjoyed the food and wine. The quality of food, for the money you pay, is exceptional. The service is brilliant..

I went here on date night with my girlfriend. I had the blue cheese burger and chips from the BBQ and it was top notch. My girlfriend is a difficult vegan & she was more than catered for with aubergine rote off the a la carte, which she loved. Top service, top atmosphere... what more can you ask for. Thanks Bistro G.

Just as fab as before, great service as usual, burgers as good as ever, also had the loaded fries, my wife had the chicken burger, all so tasty, lovely setting too. If you’ve not been give this place a try, you won’t regret it.

This was the first place we wanted to book once we were able to, and we were lucky to get a table on Saturday night. Thankfully nothing has changed since we were there on the last night before lockdown happened. Really well organised, good service, especially as they were fully booked, but you didn't feel rushed or left without a drink, but the best bit is the food. They are running both a BBQ and A La Carte menu, which is ambitious, but we had a mix of the two with no problem at all. The hot spicy wings were amazing, proper spice, quite messy and satisfying! I had a burger for main and then Clarfouti to finish. There is a lot of competition in Harpenden but we eat at Bistro Gautier more than anywhere else, never had anything other than a great experience

We had a fabulous afternoon Sunday with our first visit back to Bistro Gautier since lockdown. Everything was perfect as usual ... sun, service, drinks and food. We decided on the bbq menu which was incredible. The team were attentive throughout and we cannot wait to go back next weekend.

Team BG are back with a bang! The pub garden is a fantastic space for this first phase of re-opening. The Sunday roast is now better than ever, I had a chicken roast served in a giant Yorkshire pudding was absolutely delicious - I’m hoping to make it every week!Ambience was great, and as always, the staff were incredible.

As the weather was so nice, we tried our luck getting a table in the garden. Liana was great and managed to fit us in. We sat on the patio and felt very safe - the tables are well spaced and the staff (it’s table service only) efficient and friendly. The BBQ food was delicious! This was our first meal out since lockdown eased and we’ll definitely come again. Thanks Liana and team for a great lunch :-)

Had a tremendous afternoon at Bistro Gautier, yesterday, lovely food, in a great atmosphere, so lovely to be out, in the beautiful beer garden, with great background music. We were well looked after by all the staff, really cannot praise enough!! See you again soon!

Great to see Bistro Gautier back in business. We’ve just had a fab lunch à deux in their garden. I resisted the roast chicken served in a large Yorkshire pud today (but I’ll be back for that!) and instead shared some chicken wings before tucking into a home-made burger straight off the BBQ. A lovely glass of rosé and the usual wonderful service and hospitality from Liana and the team, made the “return to dining out” a joy!

Popped in for a quick pint one evening whilst on a bike ride, had a pint but saw their "BBQ" offering (not sure there's an actual BBQ anywhere) and then came back 2 days later with the wife and kids for an early meal. We were seated in the patio part of outside, partly as the top garden was a bit noisy and 'friday evening' atmosphere for a family. However, it didn't matter as we weren't seated up there. The overall experience was really good. Although there weren't a lot of staff, there was always one when you needed one (led by Liana), and everyone working seemed happy - it looked like a good team. We all ate from the BBQ menu, and everyone was happy with their food. Perhaps a little bit pricey for what it was (£10 for a cheeseburger - but that doesn't include chips or anything apart from the cheeseburger), but the quality was good, the wait wasn't too long, and it was good to be out. We'd only been here once before, a few years back, and it hadn't inspired us to return. However, I think we will be back again within the near future as we all enjoyed it and the a la carte menu looked interesting as well.

Absolutely spot on as usual. I’ve been here for 3 years running & I’m proud to call it my local. Not only do they have a beautiful pale ale on tap but the garden competes as the best in harpenden! Off the beaten path and not slap right in the centre, but still with a comfy ambience. The staff are always a pleasure & the BBQ menu is to die for. Finally a blue cheese burger done right! I’ve finally got to the stage where I can walk in & they know my drink, what more can you ask for!

A BBQ menu to die for & staff always awaiting you with a smile, I’ve been here for years & I continue to return for both the fantastic service, the killer beer garden & the people. Easily one of the best parts of harpenden & whether you dig in to their indulgent BBQ menu or treat yourself with the A La Carte menu, you’re in for something special!
