The Alma Public House in Cambridge

It’s been about 5 yrs since we were at this pub, having moved. Not a patch on how we remember it. Please review your description of prawn cocktail, poor excuse. We had people flocking around us in the bar while we were trying to eat, and some nasty, out of place machine, established in place of what was a nice long bench with tables. Long lost the country charm in the garden, it appears that the whole place has been jammed full of tables and chairs. No thanks!

Nice pub. It became a regular when I was working in Cambridge this summer. It's a great place to watch sport (excellent atmosphere) but also on quieter nights you can play board games, cards, darts, and it's basically a classic pub. Nice staff and good beer with a nice selection of snacks but also cooked pub grub. What more could you want! Highly recommend it.

Bit thrown by the failure of the link from TA to the pub website but easily found through a search. This place is a trad pub, nothing prissy or over egged. Friendly staff, efficient service, affable, sometimes bustling punters, good pub food and all the necessary critical or significant sport on easily visible TVs. Not on our night but we were assured there is music regularly in varying forms and unless we misunderstood also some quizzing. Pleased to recommend as a place to relax and live a few hours.

Not a serious rugby pub. I rang ahead to see if they were showing the URC semi final and was told they were. Arrived, bought a drink only to be told they’re not showing it. Poor

Imagine serving this beer and refusing to give a repour even after I asked politely. Do you expect someone to pay for this? No where else in the country would someone be refused a repour for this. Secondly, the female staff at the bar is extremely unprofessional. It's normal to have your family patronise the place you're working ig but having your kid sit and crawl on the bar table and almost knocking over a customer's drink is ridiculous. Are customers also supposed to put up with that? There's nothing wrong if your kid was sitting down like everyone else but frankly to see a kid crawling up and down my table is insane. Please have some standards set up for this pub and train your staff how to pour a pint. If mistakes happen (cuz everyone can pour a bad pint) then customers should be entitled a repour. I asked twice was told it'll be done and then no one bothered. This is so poor . One of the worse pub experiences.

I don't go as often as I'd like. The quiz is great and Dave is a good host. The staff are good and make sure you don't wait long at the bar. The food is lovely. Pies excellent, fish and chips huge, and cheesy chips for snacking. Team Stormy Analytica.

Went to quiz....Broad range of questions, competitive, lively, played in excellent spirit..so much fun! 16 teams of smart people!! Great quiz master, staff and service. Can't wait to go again!!

Local pub with descent ales and beers. Servings are big. Popular with local neighbors. Prices are lower than in London. On the weekdays it's not crowdy.

Great place to spend an evening. Food was big and tasty! Service and beer both excellent.

This was the first pub my gf went too 30 years ago and we found it too be friendly and nice ...it was,nice for her to reminisce her past..and nice to see a local nice pub too be still there as a pub ..enjoy your visit

Very quiet for a midweek lunch, but just what was needed. The meal portions were very large and tasty. The Alma was great when I visited years ago and I’m glad to say still is 👏

Decepção! Depois de comprar no mercado de natal, em York, uma torta tradicional de mashroom que estava deliciosa, como também no Covered Market em Oxford, resolvi virar fã de pie. Procurei na internet e achei quatro recomendações. Como esse era o mais próximo, resolvi aproveitar. O recheio tava com pouco sabor, no qual se sentia um gosto de frango mal cozido, mashroom sem gosto e o molho ralo.

Went there to meet friends watch footy, had something to eat and a few beers. Atmosphere was friendly and lively without being to noisy and crazy. Food was reasonably priced good portions and very tasty. Not a massive menu but plenty for what we wanted.

Well priced, great staff, good for sports, quizzes and open mikes, staff are all friendly and spacious too. The only let down is we ordered the (decently portioned) gluten free chips for my coeliac friend, they were not gluten free as she was quite ill the next morning. I'm not sure if it was cross contamination or what but something to take into account. We will be back

I went on a Friday night with some friends and we had pies for dinner. I was happy about the food. The service is average. I would go back again.

We called in the Alma as we had walked in Cambridge quite a ways. The service, food and atmosphere was excellent. If there was a place anywhere in the world you would want to just drop in on, this is it. Especially if you are a rugby union fan. The gammon, egg and chips were amazing. Value for money in Cambridge, top of the list.

Food good and a wide choice of ales. Was in on a quiet afternoon so cant pass comments on the atmosphere, but gives impression of being a good night out.

Came here for US friend as he wanted steak pie and enjoyed it in pub atmosphere

staying in Cambridge and visited a few pubs. Found the Alma and the food was so good we went back the next night. Our pint of Staropramen was very refreshing. The staff made the place feel very relaxed while being professional and helpful 😊 Definitely be back when in Cambridge again.

Lovely pub. Used to drink there in the early 90s and pleased to say that the pub still has the character and staff to match.

Good pub with pretty standard pub food and selection of drinks. Only ever been for pub quiz on Thursdays which is a pretty top quality one.

Amazing place, amazing staff! After one year I can actually say that is probably the most amazing pub in Cambridge. Not expensive at all and the staff always remember what you like, you don't even have to ask them. The other is also really nice with the customers, always with a nice word for everyone.

We came to play darts however when we bought our beers and started the game( the place for playing was more than uncomfortable) came the waitress and told us that today is a game.and darts are not allowed to play... 😒

Came for the football on a Sunday afternoon, and made sure we had some of the pies we had heard so much about. They were not oversold, they were great!! Great little local boozer, would definitely recommend.

Local's sports bar with VERY GOOD pies and fresh beer on taps. This American felt British for a night! Enjoyed it very much.

A lad with a northen accent and a bad hair cut was very rude while I was in there. I over heard him slagging customers off while behind the bar which of course I find very unprofessional. Safe to say I will not be back I a hurry

Drinks were good and bar staff friendly. Food was passable. Venison burger was cheap, chips average. Curry is on par with Weatherspoons. Steak were average. Overall, all plates were left half eaten. Food is not value for money, good for drinks. Quiet atmopshere. Very unlikely to return unfortunately.

The wonders of Cask Marque and Google found this gem of a back street local. Small beer garden to side plus some in front. Good real ale pub. Had another new brewery ..Milton. pint of Spartan Very good.

Great atmosphere and friendly staff

Possibly the worst burger I have ever had in my life. For £13, I received a limp, well done beef patty in between thin dry ciabatta with a Tesco mixed leaf salad on the side, accompanied by cold raw chips. Utterly useless, borderline inedible, definitely one to avoid.

Visited here on a Sunday evening and it wasn't particularly busy. The food was very nice and a substantial meal. What let this place down was the service, the guy behind the bar was very rude and snapped at me when I went to buy a drink when he deemed me to be too quick to put my card to the card machine "have you not got any patience". He was also very rude to my friend when he asked if he could pay with cash. All in all it ruined what would have been a nice evening.

This pub has a great atmosphere about it. Staff are very friendly and helpful. Food was excellent and it is very reasonably priced. The staff made me feel very welcome upon my visit, I will most certainly be returning.10/10

We love coming to this pub for their pub quiz night! It is a very difficult pub quiz, but it's great fun with a group of friends. Be sure to get there at least an hour early to snag a table. They do serve dinner, so you can easily get dinner and then wait for the pub quiz.

Lovely staff, good student atmosphere and great for watching live sporting events. Only drawback was the taste of the food which seemed to be frozen, due to bland taste. Other than that, would recommend

Good place to watch the rugby. Stays open till 12 which is very convenient. Is a bit of an alcoholics pub when there is no sport on but very good atmosphere 90% of the time.

The fish and chips are generous and delicious! Great beer and cider selection. Excellent spot for rugby. Fills up quickly so get there early.

Best pub to watch cricket in Cambridge.

The Alma was a good place to choose for a family group needing an evening meal on a Monday in Cambridge. The menu was varied and was good value for money. We ordered 'bangers and mash', fish and chips, and broccoli and potato cheese bake. The menu also included burgers and curries, etc. The food was well presented and service was good, thanks to Dave and Simon. It was nice to relax in the pub afterwards and have the option of watching a match on the TV screen.

Their personal website, not Trip Advisor, suggests they have an open mic night every Sunday - this was not the case. We walked 30 minutes to get here to be told that there was no music and given a very gormless expression as if I was the person in the wrong. Before you turn up expecting music, call ahead and check so you don't waste your time.

Standard rugby pub with great atmosphere.

we had a reservation the manager refused to honour this then proceeded to be rude and disrespectful towards the whole group and shouted using profanity when no one was disrespectful towards him. leaving everyone very distressed

Seems to have become an EDL pub, with our friend trying to book a table two weeks in a row to be fobbed off on arrival both times with excuses like “sorry our phone has been diverting, no table booked here” despite being answered by the Alma. One of our favourite pubs turned into the worst in Cambridge. Just be honest... save us the trip across town.

Great Quiz, good food, great selection of ales and a good atmosphere. What is not to like?

I feel like the 2 stars is quite harsh because overall, we didn't mind visiting The Alma, the drinks were good, bar staff were very friendly and helpful, however this is where the good times stop. Whoever the quiz master is on a Thursday night, we have the feeling he might be the owner or manager but won't ever find out, is rude, unhelpful and a terrible host all round. The quiz was fun when we eventually were allowed to play after the quiz master basically tried to keep it to locals and his friends so that he didn't have to do too much work but I wouldn't recommended going here for the quiz as the prizes were also pretty poor unless you win the whole thing.

We stayed in a hotel around the corner and needed somewhere local to eat. We called the ALMA and they said they had free tables but as they dont take bookings and only do table service we needed to arrive early. We took their advice and went to the pub and were lucky enough to get a good table. The place was full at 5 pm on a Friday. The staff who provided table service were fantastic, really attentive and looking out for tables that needed service. they were all friendly and really looked after us. I had rump steak and it was very tender and tasty and reasonably priced. The beer was very good also.

Great afternoon watching the football with friends. Food good, beer excellent and all Covid precautions in place. Good experience, unfortunately wrong result ,😭😭

We really enjoyed watching the Scotland v Wales and Italy v England on 30th October at the Alma. Great food and attentive and friendly table service kept us refreshed throughout the afternoon in what was a vibrant atmosphere well managed in accordance with Covid-19 guidelines.

A really traditional pub. Managing Covid19 well. One of the few showing football which is why we went. Traditional pub grub for £10 typical for Cambridge and a good choice of beers. Tucked away in an unfashionable area, don't let that put you off if you want a traditional pub.

We went with my wife and my Son for dinner, my son and I ordered their "Gourmet Steak Burger" and my wife ordered a currey. The burgers cannot be farther away from Gourmet, they did not taste nice at all to say the least, and unfortunately both my son and I developed tommy ache which was severe in the case of my son. I usually don't write reviews and in particular I don't like writting bad ones, but maybe some good will come out of this.

As a removal company, we were in town for a night and wanted a bite to eat and to catch the rugby on tv. We asked google where the best place to watch rugby is in Cambridge and immediately The Alma was the recommendation. I phoned ahead as in these covid times, I wasn’t sure if we may need to book. No need. We arrived at the pub and sure enough two games were being screened. I can highly recommend the steak and Guinness pie as well as the burger. Excellent service from Justin at the bar and also a pleasure to watch the game with a very learned and pleasant Kiwi lady. Thank you to The Alma for reinforcing the notion that the rugby family looks after its own and is alive and well far and wide. A shame the Gloucester result wasn’t in our favour but good things come to those who wait. Thanks to the landlord (Dave, I think) for a wonderful experience.

We only came to use facilities and we ended up having lunch and drinks. Brilliant pub, delicious food and honest portions. Service couldn’t be more helpful. Strongly recommend.

I had a steak pie with side of mash and peas. Food was very heavy (pie was fine tasting; mash tasted like margarine or oil), and I only ate half. Still I felt sluggish and gross the rest of the day. Not sure about the rest of the menu, but I won’t likely return.
