The Alfred Herring in City of London, Westminster

Got eggs benedict at the Alfred herring at Palmers green and eggs were stone cold waited a while for them to come and didn't want to wait for replacement..shocking

Love this place we wish they were not selling as it has great staff and relaxing atmosphere and food is excellent. Alot better than the new crown southgate that should be closed down and sold. Please tim Martin don't sell the Alfred herring.

Well done to the new manager james and his team , we had a sneaky afternoon in the herring , few beers , fizz , Gins and cocktails. We all had food and was brilliant, really enjoyed everything. Your Butter Chicken burger yummy having it again . Keep up the great work Dan the man your a ledge I wonder how many steps you do a day running around serving us and chatted.

Good sized pub with friendly staff. Great value as with the majority of Wetherspoon pubs for both food and drink. Paid 2.10 for a pint of Stowford Press which can't be bad. I was there early in the day and it was quite popular then. Definitely worth a visit

Lunch with friend. Most of tables needed a good clean. Ordered our food and it arrived quickly. I have been here before and it was ok not as good as usual.

Food was disgustingly awful. My pizza was lukewarm and tasteless. My friend’s food was not served at the same time as mine. A surly, blonde female member of staff said that was because our food wasn’t on the same ticket. Never mind that we were friends sitting at the same table and wanted to eat our meals at the same time! Lack of choice now on the menu. Sausage and mash taken off among other old standbys. No effort made whatsoever to provide a decent meal, that wasn’t cold, tasteless slop. Obviously the draw is the cheaply priced beer and wine. The decor is tired and needs a facelift. Come on Wetherspoons, provide some decent food, and try to serve it hot, please.

An absolute disgrace to the pub industry. On Tuesday night they claim they are short of staff. I bet they will be short of customers soon. Just look at the state of the place. Pictures attached.

First time (25.09.20) there for breakfast with a friend of mine and I had scrambled eggs on toast bread drunk orange juice and she had English breakfast and she had a tea.

I wanted a quiet afternoon with a beer and catching up with friends. Well, it turned out to be a hell time. A large group of people started behaving like animals shouting and threatening one another and it became a horror. It was truly shocking. And what’s worst - the management did NOTHING! I saw people complaining to them and other members of staff asking for some peace in the place but instead of handling the situation they walked off with blank faces. Stay away from here if you can. You can get hurt an even the manager won’t notice that!!! Appalling.

Visited this pub for breakfast over six months ago. Ordered a hot breakfast , when it arrived , a number of items were cold so got a refund. Did not return for a long time. Go there today to give them the benefit of the doubt. Order my breakfast, politely remind them to ensure that the food is hot due to my last experience. Lady behind the bar said she would. Ordered porridge with blueberries and a cooked breakfast. First of all the look of the porridge was gruel like. It tasted like it had been chewed before. Then after the breakfast arrived. Had a hash brown, went to put a few beans with it. Tasted it and the beans were cold. Took it back to get my money back. Got an apology but reminded her that I did say to ask the Chef to ensure it was hot. Got my refund and wanted to speak to a manager about this. The manager came over after finishing putting his poster up. Explained the situation to him and he offered to replace the breakfast. Lets get this straight. You cant cook a breakfast six months ago. When reminded about food being hot you bring cold food. Do you really think that I am going to give you a third chance to cook me something. If you cant cook hot food then do not have it on the menu.

Although the atmosphere is nice, the food is getting worse and worse. This place used to have decent food considering the price. I ordered fish and chips - a classic. What I received? Swimming in grease something that had a shape of fish, battered (and battering was the meal). In simple words, it was inedible- dry and tasteless something that was supposed to be a cod. Let’s mention the chips. Fried in the morning and served in the evening. For oil lovers - you’ll love it. It all practically swims in it! Bon appetite.

A once-decent 'Spoons has quite quickly declined. It used to be a pleasure to eat here but I dunno if there's been a change in kitchen staff or a company-wide policy to make things less good but the last couple of times it has been quite awful. The Friday/Saturday clientele seems to have changed from being quite vibrant to just being the stereotypical 'spoons single old men taking up a 4-seat table. I dunno, maybe it just the effect of Brexit kicking in (you reap what you sow, Mr Martin). In summary, 6 months ago I would've given this place 4 stars, but now I'd give it 2. Oh well...

Lavazza the best coffee free refills on any tea or coffee all every day...nice English breakfast traditional with only 3.60

Appalling service, most staff must be being held hostage to get that attitude. Got fed up begging for a drink or meal. Bring back Ewa a real manager. No ice , no gas for beer pumps, no toilet paper in M or F . Table cleaning a long forgotten art so don’t lean on the wood work . Good luck!!!

Fewer TV screens than is usual in such pubs. Staff attentive but not especially friendly. Portobello Market Porter was incredibly good value (just under a pound) but a little sharp.

Very slow service because we were told of staff shortages. there were only three bar staff and the bar was closed fir about an hour at 7pm due to a shortage of clean glasses.

We had a gluten free mixed grill for lunch. The staff were friendly and helpful, but the initial offering had to be sent back as it contained non gluten free items. This was done without delay or fuss.

How do I start. Have been going to this pub since it opened. Before, my only criticism was the risk of screaming kids running around out of control but that's now typical of Wetherspoons pubs generally and due to other qualities could on most occasions be tolerated as they are family pubs these days.

Empty tables not cleared . Ordered food and had to repeat order 3 times and they still got it wrong . Staff on duty obviously would rather be elsewhere . Decor gets 2 stars

Doy las tres estrellas a los camareros, que son educados. Me he llevado dos estrellas en la revisión por el personal del bar que son maleducados y poco acogedora. My wife &I; visited this pub/restaurant this evening & got a very pleasant surprise, firstly we were greeted by there manager named Ardi like long lost friends, he was very chatty & made us feel most at home!

Pics below, taken between 8.30pm and 9pm on a Monday night, a bit different to the promotional pics. Staff disinterested. Sad. Hope this was a one-off. Beer still great, food normal good value.

Visited for pre-dinner drinks. Was pleased to see a great selection of beers etc to choose from. Wished I had more time to sample them before leaving Worth another visit for this purpose.

Value for money this place is very good. However you may find yourself waiting for a while at the bar trying to get served. The staff are friendly and the food is nice, but not amazing, you are getting what you pay for, which isn't completely a negative thing but there is room for improvement where the steaks aren't cooked to what you request (a rare steak coming well done for example) and some other food can taste slightly 'manufactured' or rushed and not put any real heart into it, but not bad or horrible at all, you may just feel lacking a little quality, however I will still return and eat and drink here. Overall it is priced well, staff are friendly, and if you're not a fussy person and want a nice pint and food at lunch you wont be disappointed.

I was very disappointed to learn at 11.45pm on this evening that I was not going to be served as staff were temporarily suspending service to see in the new year alone in their own space; this was not announced before hand. This information was shared in a very rude way and when the new year had passed I was refused service once more as when i had asked about service before Midnight the bar staff did not appreciate the challenge. I am an 81 year old customer who will review once more whether to spend my weekly trips in this establishment due to the rudeness towards myself and others who totalled 14. Letters to head office will follow.

As the heading says, it's great place to visit - providing you love Chavs who seem unable to control their screaming brats, and like to watch them eating like pigs, but otherwise, I'd find another pub. As a previous reviewer said, the staff don't seem to know how to deal with it and ask them to consider other customers.

He usado este pub y bajar durante bastante tiempo. El personal es amable y eficiente. Yo tenía un bistec de Aberdeen Angus allí recientemente y realmente estaba delicioso. Es un agradable pub que buscan y tienen muy buena selección de cervezas y otras bebidas. La comida está por debajo de la media, pero me gusta el nuevo partícipe mejorado bajos en calorías.

Yo uso este sitio para el desayuno y la comida centain everyweek es precocida y la izquierda bajo las lámparas, el tocino se hace camino antes de la orden es la tostada, luego izquierda underlamps. La tostada está fría porque la mayoría de las veces no es bajo la lámpara completamente el tocino es tan seca se puede ajustar. He hecho 3 - 4 quejas y enviarlo, pero cae en saco roto.

Buena elección de lotes menú de ofertas especiales. Zona de estar agradable buen ambiente sin duda vale la pena una visita.

Bueno para un Wetherspoons, pub la comida era barato, rápido, y lo que se espera. Niño muy amable y a los niños les encantó. Volveremos.

Popped in here on Saturday evening with 2 girl friends and really nice! Was quite busy so hard to find a seat but good in end! Staff who served us was very pleasant and enjoyed a few hours in here

Bad experience, I am a regular customer. Had a few bad experiences here before, but got resolved.But this time was the worst, so I think I will only come back here for drinks from now on.

Steak Club day being a Tuesday.!4oz Aberdeen Angus rump steak which was actually two 8oz steaks,mushrooms,big heap of peas,grilled tomatoes and lashings of salad (at my choice).Steak was tender and perfectly cooked,hot plate and,at long last, Colmans English mustard on hand.Great steaks need great mustard.All washed down with Bengali craft ale from Sixpoint,which I am now growing to appreciate.The cost for this excellent lunch ? £9.75 all up.You just cannot beat it !

......... BUT NOT AT YOUR BARReally finding the 'No Standing At The Bar' policy far too draconian now. This is a 'local' bar with local people. We are not in a central London/centre of a main town so think we need a different approach. Standing at the bar here used to be allowed - it is a large bar with plenty of room. The majority of 'the main stretch' of the bar was never used for standing anyway. Not sure if this is now a national policy for Weatherspoons, I'd be very interested to know. However, we frequent the pub far less than we did previously. Even tonight, after being asked to move away from the bar we were asked by three guys if they could have the table as they wanted food! We'd have happily given them our table but would then have had nowhere to finish our drinks. If there was a contest for 'my best local' you wouldn't win it now. Maybe this is the price of commercialism (i.e. do you only really want people to eat and drink rather than just have a drink), but I thought Tim Martin wasn't really going down that route - maybe I thought wrong.

Stopping off for lunch while in the area, this proved a good choice. On a Monday lunchtime it was fairly quiet with plenty of choice of places to sit and i was served straightaway.No complaints at all re my cheese and tomato toastie, chips and garlic bread. A nice coffee rounded off a pleasant lunch.As is common with wetherspoons, lots of local history information and old photographs on the walls which add interest.

I love this bar , great my local, People talk and its the heart of the community , a great little community corner and now , you can not stand at the bar . Bit crazy as pubs need local people. Great food and staff also brilliant manager . So give us the corner back.

The Alfred herring they are serving excellent foods . Price are reasonable , any body enjoy the foods , staff are really helpful .. I will come back again

Why is there a picture of a loo as the main image? Anyway we go here often. The best and widest ale selection for miles which are only approx £2.50 a pint (!) and cheap and filling freshly cooked food is available all day also. The Roasts are gone, but the menu is huge anyway so it doesnt matter and very reasonable particularly if you find a meal and drink combo. The wine is cheap by the bottle, or glass, with quality and prices to suit but always good value. Its well run, friendly, clean and great for food or drink or both. Superb overall and an asset to the area.

Every summer we have a mini break in Palmers Green N13 and the Alfred Herring is our stop for breakfast and dinners. The food is always fresh and very nice presented. Reasonable prices. It's a large pub so there is room for all. Quite a laid back area where you can sit outside and watch the world go by. There are plenty of eateries and coffee shops but we always end up in the "Kipper" that the Alfred Herring is locally known as

Five of us went to the Alfred Herring on Saturday night prior to going on for dinner. It is a Wetherspoons and very reasonably priced. We had a 17 year old with us who was stopped at the door by the security guys and said she would not be drinking. They said she could come in until 9:00 then would have to leave, which suited us as we had dinner reservations for 9:00 anyway. We got served straight away and had two wines, a pint of beer and two waters and it was only £10:40 - bargain !There was a nice atmosphere in this large pub and I would imagine a lot of the drinkers were locals.Would definitely go there again if we were in the area.Foxyfox10

Great pub running under franchise of wetherspoon with a great selections of food and beverages both alcoholic and non alcoholic, the breakfast menu and lunch menu are great with a variety of options available, very warm and welcoming pub with an ambient atmosphere where friends and family can enjoy a few drinks and a meal on the side. All types of people can visit this establishment wether you have children or not

Le BBQ ribs sono le più buone che ho mangiato in vita mia oltre alla colazione che sapevo già fosse ottima I prezzi sono molto buoni.Atmosfera calda e tipica dei pub Londinesi. Ci andrò ogni volta che tornerò a Londra.

Mistakes happen but for the money you can eat really well. It is good and highly recommended. The Polish manager Ewa is super nice and professional.

It's a very well managed, friendly Pub.Service is always good* and there's a great choice of well kept beers and drinks. The food is always hot and well presented. Simple things like eggs served how you ask with breakfast show the kitchen cares. The Herring does stand out from certain other pubs in the chain. Staff having a cheerful attitude and a bit of banter, tables are attended to promptly and a genuine interest in the customer all make for a good experience.The facilities are good and always well maintained. * The pub can get busy at peak time (17:00-19:00 visitors) when orders for food, family groups and thirsty workers all converge at the bar.That isn't a criticism, more a sign of the pubs popularity, and if you do have to wait it's never for more than a minute or three

This is a Wetherspoon pub and certainly the one with the best food I've been to so far. We happened to go there on "Fish Friday". The place was packed and we almost gave up trying to get a seat. I am glad we found a table and stayed. You order at the bar, tell them your table number and the food is served to you. Very tasty Fish & Chips which came with a pint of your choice. The big surprise- it came to only £ 6.75 per person. This has got to be one of the best deals in this pricey city. We had other meals there too. The food is very good quality and the pub is cosy and the staff friendly. It is now one of my favorite places in London.

We had a pub burger and a BQ half slab and to this a Heineken and a glass of Merlot.FF was served to both dishes and also a coleslaw salad.I do prefer a bit different type of BQ but the meals were OK and quite reasonable.They also had a curry evening which looked interesting. Seems to have a different set up of special offers every evening.I also liked the idea that you order and pay at the bar and bring your own drinks to your table and the food is brought to your table.We love the European net prices.This is something the Americans really should learn.For me as a customer I want to see the money I have to pay and all employers should pay it's staff correctly. Why do they not get and understand this?????

Just wanted to write a quick note to say what a lovely time we always have when we visit the Alfred Herring in Palmers Green - they have amazing wine, good food and lovely family atmosphere. This Saturday my husband and I stopped for a bottle of wine and also to book a table for our grandson's birthday party next weekend - we were pleasantly surprised with the professionalism and lovely attitude we received from Ms. Eva - the manager – she immediately came over and sat with us and within minutes our party was booked and nicely organised. We are very much looking forward to the party and it is with great pleasure that I recommend the establishment with their lovely manager.

I am sure most people will have eaten in a Weatherspoon pub before. I have eaten in a few and really enjoyed my experience at the Palmers Green pub. Prices are always very good wherever you go but service can be hit n miss. Pleased to say Palmers Green seem to have their priorities right when it comes to good customer service. If you want a cheap night out you can't go wrong here.

I visit this Pub pretty often, so I thought it was about time I reviewed it!Breakfast here is great! Being a vegetarian, I go for the the 'Vegetarian Breakfast". The portions are already pretty big so I don't see the point of upgrading to the large. Theres plenty of other vegetarian options e.g. pancakes with maple syrup YUM, breakfast wrap, MOMA porridge etc)Lunch and dinner is great too! Too many options to list but last time I went I got the 5 bean burrito. (Just thinking about it is making my mouth water)Its obviously not a Michelin star restaurant but for the money you pay, its well worth it!Service - Always with a smile (most of the time :/ ) really friendly staffCleanliness - Considering the high foot fall, the place is actually pretty clean and for a drinking establishment, the bathrooms are well kept!Location - Moments away from Palmers Green Station, the 329, W6 & N29 stop right outside and theres plenty of parking on the high street and down side roads

I always find that Wetherspoons are either a hit or a miss and the Palmers Green one is unfortunately is one to miss. The place needs a dam good clean, the seats and floor were sticky and the tables were covered in ground in dirt.The food was really poor, we went for Sunday lunch at around noon and the veg looked and tasted like it had been cooked the previous Sunday.This another Wetherspoons that I won't be visiting again.

i had a meal here which was a deli deal TunaBaguette,, it would have been nice if the kitchen staff had buttered the baguette,,, but didnt and was very dry! It was also overloaded with cucumber ( which i hate ) and wasnt listed on themenu as an ingredient! The girl who deliveered the food just plonked it down on the table and left,, no instructions as to where i might find condiments ect.. all in all, not a very good experience,, ive had a lot better service and quality a other WS sites.

The Alfred Herring is located a few minutes from Palmer Green station (this Wetherspoon pub is named after Alfred Herring VC of 143 Fox Lane, Palmers Green). The pub appears to have a lot of regulars and the seating areas are sometimes full. The toilets are clean and the cubicles very spacious. I had a Jacket potato with tuna maya and salad, it was very dry and no butter was included. No one came to check once the food was served, how it was.They had a small range of IPAs available.

Early evening on a Saturday is not usually the best time to visit a Wetherspoons, but this one was a pleasant oasis is an otherwise nondescript high street. It had a really good range of real ales, which, to judge from the Black Cat Reserve, are well-kept, and at keen prices. The place was clean, tidy, and comfortable with none of the offputting clientele described by other reviewers.

Popped into the Alfred Herring for a bite to eat and beer and to watch the football in a bit of peace and quiet. Whilst the food and beer were fine I had the misfortune to observe whoever was doing the quiz (not sure if a member of staff or a customer) haranguing the poor girl who I believe was in charge. He attempted to move tables which had reserved signs on and when asked not to my the girl in charge then proceeded to ask customer who were having their drinks to move so he could have their tables. This was promptly stopped once again by the girl in charge. The "quiz master" seemed rather put out having been stopped his little game of musical chairs. Not sure what's going in here but I think this blokes needs some questions asked if him. By the by, my food and beer were excellent. Shame the wifi here is a little patchy

I have visited the Alfred Herring many times in the past and it used to be a cheap and cheerful dining experience that provided a hearty meal in warm and welcoming surroundings. However the past couple of times I have found the Sunday lunch becoming a sorry excuse for the plate that used to be served here (I went back since my previous poor experience as I gave them the benefit of the doubt and thought the food quality deterioration might have been a blip). Unfortunately, the roast beef was fatty yet again and with only 2 small slices to choose from, not very appealing. The cost of the adult Sunday dinner is almost double the children's portion price yet the only difference was 2 stuffing balls and half a potato! This compounded by boisterous laddish, loud swearing and burping from the booth nearby where we were trying to enjoy a Sunday meal with our 2 children. What a shame that the managers don't try to ensure that the behaviour of some of their clients doesn't detract from other patrons' enjoyment and they are not even asked to tone it down a little.... won't be going back for a while in the hope that they improve things. Would have been better off paying the same money for a roast in a nice pub elsewhere with quality meat in a more civilised environment.

Had many meals in this Wetherspoons pub and have never been disappointed. We took two of our grandchildren for dinner on curry night and thought the portion size was excellant and extremely good value for money.

Business took me to Parsons Green and searched in vain for a half decent place for lunch.Thank goodness I happened on this excellent Wetherspoons.Meal deal lunch was exceptional value,which included a well kept pint of real ale,was well cooked and generous in size.Swift and pleasant service.Very well satisfied.

I love going to any Whetherspoon's for the cheap food and booze. The whole experience in general is excellent - food, service and atmosphere! Obviously it attracts a gaggle of drunken old men but they're harmless and no reflection on the chain's experience!The food was cheap, tasty and served quickly. All staff were polite and there was a nice friendly atmosphere about the place.I would recommend this place to anyone.

My family and I often visit The Alfred Herring on a Tuesday for their delicious and well cooked steaks. The service is lovely. The staff are helpful and polite. The atmosphere in the pub is always friendly and pleasant. Excellent! P.S Please do not be put off by the ghastly old men standing outside smoking. Ignore them and go in!

They offer simple but well-cooked food; they have really good daily deals for almost each day of the week and they offer a wide range of ale which makes this a favorite spot if you live around Palmer's Green. Their coffee is also surprisingly good and they offer free wi-fi so if you're looking for a quite place to study and enjoy some nice coffee and food during the week, this is a far better option than the local Starbucks up the street.A little note: if you are gonna order house wine; go with rose; it's better quality than their red.

Despite being a Wetherspoon afficionado and the pub being close by, this was my first ever visit. No two Wetherspoons are the same but, as previous reviewers have said, this is a spacious pub with views out on to the street. Went on a Tuesday and had an excellent mixed grill as part of their Steak night. Service was prompt, food was well cooked but could have done without the rather insincere "everything alright with the meal" mantra from the busy duty manager, who probably wouldn't have had time to deal with the complaints if voiced.

I use this Pub/restaurant as my local and i have to say as wetherspoons go this is one of the better ones the food is typical but well cooked which can be rare.the staff is always ready to help

Big spacious comfortable pub, disabled friendly with disabled toilet and helpful staff.[ Green Lanes central Palmers Green]. I was there at about 10:15am and ordered a big breakfast. This has two of everything and I found it difficult to finish! Add a cup of tea and just over £5.00 which was good value.I did ask for one or two items to be changed, but they forgot. Could easily make 4 stars.Also does bar meals, special offers and "steak" and a "curry" special days.
