Incredible drinks and incredible atmosphere. Perfect spot to hide from the rain or kill time. 10/10

We went in for food.the food was excellent

Not great service… we had to place our order at the bar after 10 minutes of waiting at our table…

Really disappointed. Four of us got taxis to the Advocate hoping for a nice night out specifically to watch the Tottenham game. They advertised online they would be playing this game and were one of the only venues in all of Edinburgh advertising it - so we booked a table. We came half an hour before kick off to get some drinks, the game was again advertised on their billboard inside, confirming they will be showing it. But they didn’t… We asked the blonde bartender twice prior to kick off about him changing the channel to the Tottenham game, he said “I’ll check with the manager” but they still didn’t do it and there was no communication from them afterwards about our request to change the channel. Another table next to us also asked too. So we sat waiting, until I asked a third time up to the bar one minute before kick off. They said they could only put one game on any of the screens and someone else had requested to watch a different game that wasn’t on the venue’s schedule. So they wouldn’t change it… Complete waste of time and money. They could’ve said they wouldn’t be playing the game they’d advertised at multiple points throughout the night when we asked. It might seem like a trivial complaint but the result is £45+ in taxis and several more £’s in drinks wasted. We instead had to rush for a taxi to watch the game back home, leaving our drinks, wasting more money, and missing most of the first half. Just ruined the start of our night and the last night in Edinburgh for our two friends visiting from America. And all because they couldn’t provide the service they advertised nor could they communicate effectively. In future, just be straight up, we wouldn’t have been anywhere near frustrated if you just said the first time we asked that you unfortunately wouldn’t be playing the game. That way we could’ve at least had time then to make other arrangements instead of missing most of game.

Stopped here with my 1 year old. Was a good spot to get away from the business of the royal mile. Managed to squeeze a push chair into the corner and have a bite to eat and a pint. Staff where super nice. Steak sandwich was great.

I have visited this pub a few times. Once when I was with my family and one time when I visited with my cousin and both times I have enjoyed it. Food was really nice and the menu had plenty of options to pick from. Staff have always been lovely and friendly. Looking forward to coming back sometime.

The food was delicious and priced right. I was able to get a small plate and a side instead of a large entree, and it was about 8.50 pounds. The hostess/server was so helpful and seated our party of five upon arrival. And the Swedish wild berries cider was perfect.

The hamburger and the huggies are delicious.

Josh and Emily were great hosts and were awesome to talk to and super helpful. Loved the staff and definitely would go back again.

Excellent food, fun atmosphere. My husband and I got 1 main and 2 small plates to share. We got the haggis fritters, the crispy smashed potatoes, and the steak and ale pie. We loved the haggis fritters and the steak and ale pie. The crispy potatoes were fine, but nothing to write home about. Definitely worth a visit!

Good bar, good service but really average food, basically average supermarket food. But if you want just a drink, good atmosphere

Recently had dinner and drinks here with some friends. Staff were really friendly and attentive. The meals were lovely, hot and tasty. I had the pie which was fantastic! Considering the location, overall the bill was not overall expensive which was a shock - as someone who lived in Edinburgh, I was fully expecting the bill to be over £100 but it wasn’t! Definitely worth a visit if you fancy some Scottish food and drinks. Google’s asking what parking is like too… it’s Edinburgh, just get a bus.

Had my first visit today to this lovely pub food was fantastic and staff were lovely and very friendly was a pleasure to visit this wonderful pub and will definitely be visiting again

Decent pub, staff re Food /drink were sound but poor service re advertising watching Football whilst I ate. Like i say, Staff I thought up to a point were great! Can’t question their service with Food/Drink. But I attended with my family, the Football was on which was the reason why I came to that pub. There was an area designated for the Football and the rest of the pub for the rugby which is fine. I was enjoying watching the game with my Beer. Then with 75 mins to go I was told by head barman game is going off as the rugby was coming on even though rest of the pub was showing the rugby and the rugby game wasn’t even starting for another 25 minutes. Pretty despicable behaviour and certainly won’t be back. Sh*te behaviour

The Advocate is a great spot for after-dinner drinks in Edinburgh. No frills, reasonably priced, and perfect for a casual hangout. Lively vibe with a good selection of drinks, ideal for a relaxed night out.

Have been several times for a pre show meal or lunch and a beer, good friendly service. No complaints . Updated review 12 Nov 22, 3pm. unfortunately after many a good dining experience in the establishment over the years and having recommend to many friends I have a small complaint. When ordering drinks at the bar and asking for a coffee for one member of our party was told with a very frosty response from the barman that he could not provide me with any coffee, something to do with the machine not being "wired ".Didn't know what he meant. But after I pointed to the sign that said "fresh coffee" he said "if I wanted a coffee then I should go to Starbucks ".if there was some sort of problem I'm sure he could have explained it better and been more polite. If someone can't put their own problems to one side and have a smile for customers they shouldn't be in a job that involves dealing with the public. Anyway I will still return and hope that I am lucky enough to get served by their usually friendly and polite staff.

Nice easy going pub and reasonably priced beer. Very friendly staff and good food especially the steak pie. A good selection of sport on the big screen and I will definitely recommend the place.

Such a wonderful pub in the heart of Edinburgh! Clean, cozy, great customer service and food, for an affordable price you can get food and drinks. I travel to Edinburgh every year and I want to come back every time.

The ambiance and drinks are good. Staff are friendly. But the food didn't taste fresh.

I was eating with my family on Christmas Day, it was the only place where we found an empty table, from that point of view, grateful, the food was regular, since being the day it was they did not have the normal menu and only had a Christmas menu quite limited in dishes, BUT WITHOUT A DOUBT, THE WORST OF ALL, THE SERVICE, two kids serving the tables who did not even know the dishes they served you and a tall thin man with a doll shirt that He was a real unfriendly freak who literally threw dishes on customers' tables. I don't understand how they can hire people and also pay them to ruin your business. I wouldn't go back simply for that. As for the rest, it's quite average, but acceptable. good beer, yes

Popped in for a quick drink and warm up and enjoyed the best pink gin&lemonade for a long time did not eat but those that were seemed to enjoy.

One of the cheapest pubs to eat in the center. The service was very good, although the food left a little to be desired since the meat was somewhat dry. We paid £35 in total for two dishes and two drinks.

Awesome pub, would definitely recommend stopping in if you’re in the area! We were immediately greeted by the gal behind the bar and poured two proper pints of Guinness. The atmosphere was lively, but not overly crowded, and the staff was friendly and more than accommodating. Thank you so much Emily and Josh for taking such great care of us, the fantastic service, and the lovely conversation!

Had a lovely few drinks in this warm and cozy pub. Emily at the bar was super helpful with drinks and food, and the 5 plates deal hit the spot! One of the best halloumi fries I’ve had.

Lovely cosy feel. Only had drinks after work's Christmas meal so can't comment on the food, although the staff looked busy serving. Would visit again when coming to Edinburgh next time.

Was ok, but no decent stout (just Guinness) and like a lot of chain pubs there were a lot of bottled/tap lagers but not much variety. Could do with some red ales, stouts, DIPAs etc. to improve the selection. Didn’t have food so can’t comment.

En principio agradecer que nos dieran de comer el día de Navidad, aunque su único mérito fue tener varias mesas vacías, tenían un menú navideño, pedimos tres platos y se confundieron en uno, la comida, para ser sincero, y ser comida Escocesa, no estuvo mal, muy cara pero aceptable, lo que clama al cielo es el servicio, dos chavales atendiendo las mesas que no conocían ni los platos que servían y un hombre alto y delgado, con una camisa de muñequitos, que era un cretino, maleducado, iba tirándo los platos por las mesas a los clientes como sí fuesen perros, no sé cómo tienen a personajes de semejante calado arruinando los negocios de otro, no volvería ni loco.

A very pleasant bar in the busiest area of the city centre. The staff were very friendly and helpful, the food was fine, and the beer well kept, and served, with a good selection of wines. Several big screens were showing sports and news.

Cool pub near High Street. Just like you would imagine in a Scottish pub. Live football, good beer and pub food like fish & chips, mac & cheese etc. Very nice service.

Bar staff where great, made you feel really welcome, with a nice cheerful smile, and the food was good. Will defo be back.

We visited this restaurant on our first night in Edinburgh after a long day of travel. The food arrived quickly, which was perfect since we were quite hungry. Every dish we ordered was delicious and exceeded our expectations. The atmosphere was inviting, making it a great start to our holiday. We will definitely return before the end of our trip! Highly recommend for anyone looking for a satisfying meal in Edinburgh.

It's been 5 years since I revisited here at the Advocate. The staff "Emily" kindly greeted us when we entered the pub and felt very welcome being here. The food was fantastic and the service was excellent! Definitely will come back again.

I had such a lovely experience going to the advocate! I was served by a women named Emily who poured an excellent pint and greeted me with a warm smile and a friendly chat! Would defiantly come again - thanks Emily!

Nice pub on Hunters Square, just off the Royal Mile at South Bridge. Great pub vibe. Friendly staff. Have only stopped for drinks, but they also serve food. Wander off the Royal Mile and stop here. Recommend.

Had Balmoral Chicken, which was on their special menu....I wouldn't bother as it's not Balmoral Chicken. You are lucky if you get a teaspoon of haggis sprinkled on top of the chicken not on the inside of the chicken fillet as it should be, and a very small portion of microwave potatoes on the side.

This place needs a new manager cos the one thats there now is so torn faced the food is also disgusting and very small portions

Disappointing, poor quality cold roast dinner, ordered some smashed roast potatoes instead, just whole roasted potatoes in skins, second disappointment! Serving staff were pleasant hence 2 stars.

Mojito ordered, served without alcohol…just sparkling water with mint leaves, not replaced after comment to the waitress.

Great place to stop by to eat, very reasonable prices with local dishes. We do not speak English and we were still able to order and they treated us wonderfully with great kindness.

Ordered steak, medium rear. It arrived well done. The chef said they can only make it well done due to allergens. The waiter should have said they can't make medium rare steaks when he asked me how I like it done. They said they would remove my beer from the menu as a discount but never did. I was not pleased 😕

Ordered a burnt ends burger on the 'Beer and Burger' menu, staff were really good and helpful. Burger comes with chips and onion rings. What turned up was a cheese burger with stewing steak on, no sign of burnt ends. Told staff there was no burnt ends and they brought us more stewing steak which was meant to be burnt ends. Chef has no idea what burnt ends are.

Das Advocate ist modern möbliert, hell und großzügig geschnitten und daher nicht mit den alten urigen Pubs zu vergleichen. Wir waren aber hungrig, der Durst quälte auch, so dass wir es versuchten. Enttäuscht wurden wir nicht. Nettes Team, das Chicken Balmoral war zwar kein kulinarisches Highlight, aber eine solide Hausmannskost. Da wir keine Real Ales Fans sind wurde uns das Tennants empfohlen...Goldrichtig! Gute Whisky Auswahl. Angemessene Preise.

If you’re visiting the city of your dream Edinburgh, i firmly suggest to NOT enter inside this pub. You’ll find an unprofessional lady, rude and she will judge you with a disgusting and annoyed look just because you’re not Scottish. Yeah, so sorry terrible experience. I give 2 stars just for the music.

Nice bar that is also open in the afternoon and you can eat well because it is very empty. Prices for beer and cider are similar to other pubs. £5.5 The food is a bit little.

Excellent pub with fantastic food, great service, all for a fair price! Been here a couple of times and always get great service. Really friendly and chatty staff who welcome you as if you're a friend, regardless if it's your first time or 50th time. The prices are fair, e.g. a very nice 175ml picpoul white wine for 6.70 or a double monkey 47 gin and light fever tree for 9.80. We went for the small plate sharing food, haddock goujons, halloumi, and haggis fritters, plus some chips and sweet potato fries. All the food was well cooked and very tasty. A stand out was the haggis, though, so flavourful and moreish. We wished we'd not bothered with the halloumi (not a complaint as such, but the halloumi we think would be nicer grilled rather than deep fried) and gone for 2 haggis as it was sooooo good! Overall, really enjoyed the experience and would highly recommend visiting!

Good pub , especially when it's £2 A pint of Tennants

Food was a huge let down! Don’t waste your money. Balmoral chicken was just a dry piece of chicken basically, meant to come with carrots & broccoli but instead came with dried-up peas. The mashed potato was like a glob of something, think smash but congealed into one solid lump. Horrible! The haggis fritters tasted very oily, I couldn’t eat them. Really disappointed and it put a downer on my trip, I feel like we just wasted £40!

Arranged to meet a few friends on Saturday 14/09/24. There was a promotion of £2 a pint. My friend ordered 3 pints of lager which were in the promotion. The barman or manager (not sure) poured 3 glasses with 2/3 of a pint in each, which would equate to about half a pint as it was a V shaped glass. After he paid for them, he asked for them to be topped up to a pint and the barman replied with “what do you expect for £2” in a rude manner. After asking for a pint, he said “it’s only £2”. After reluctantly topping it up, he stated he was legally allowed to give us 10% less in the glass, but there was a big difference between 10% and what was in the glass. Also the pint was complete flat. This is a shocking attitude for any bar person to have towards a customer therefore I have no intentions of ever stepping foot into this bar again and neither will my friends.

Stopped in for a quick drink and see the last parts of the Arsenal game. Definitely a sports bar situation with the place packed. Didn’t have anything to eat so not sure on the food. Beer and bar service was very good.

Waiter on the 14th September was very rude to my friends and I throughout the whole night. It made me very upset 😔. £2 pints were good tho. Free pints will need to be on offer if you would like me to come back !! 😡

Appalling service, staff sound like they don’t want to be there! Advised not to order on app as most things are not available! Only visited as have friends and family! Staff need training on what hospitality is actually about!!
