Loved this place! Great location with excellent views of Lake Windermere and the marina. Friendly, professional and attentive staff - a little wait while they were busy but we just look in the views and our delicious cocktails (pomegranate daquari and espresso martini) arrived in no time! Highly recommend!

It could and should be the place to go but this was our third Lakes hol this year and our first visit. Called in after a long walk and nobody greets you, they just carry on doing what they're doing. Ask if alright to just get some seats on the balcony, asked if we want food, said just drinks, told they'll get a menu. We knew what we wanted so I waited at the bar whilst my friends got the seats. Ordered the drinks, went to sit down and waited for the drinks. Drinks finally arrived and weren't as we'd ordered. Great view and we were perfectly happy. Settled up...£6.20 a pint and £2.65 for half a spring water.

. . Voy a volver. : -)

A Saturday, perhaps not the ideal day, to win over a potential client, but it fitted in with ‘us’ so we could meet someone here nice before catching some sport elsewhere. We arrived around noon. Just two members of staff covering the lounge area. Geoff (Manager, seemingly) and Tomas. Have to say, these two Gents were superb. So engaging and warm. Absolutely nothing was too much trouble, very attentive yet very aware of the liaison reason. So impressed by them, there was a party of Gin Loving ladies in & other important weekend guests, but Geoff & Tomas operated very slickly, with the smiles still evident. The Old England is a place I’ll be visiting more, I already do as a matter of course, but it left a good impression for my meeting. Well done team

Extremely pricey purely for its prime location. The views from the terrace in the sunshine are gorgeous. The service is slow and not very attentive. Given 4 stars just for a drink with the view.

We spotted this place as we arrived in Bowness by boat. It looked like a nice place and, indeed, in good weather this is a great spot for a drink and a snack. It offers lovely views over the lake. But it’s expensive - you pay London prices here - and the service is not quick. 3.5 stars: this place is better than average but it doesn’t really merit 4 stars.

We were treated to champagne afternoon tea as a birthday gift.We phoned in the week to book in for it and the member of staff said he would reserve some window seats for us. We did not need to book but glad we did.Indeed when we arrived we were greeted at the bar and given the choice of where to sit in the lounge or on the terrace but no record of our booking, however we did get shown to the large windowed area and some 'reserved' tables so a perfect spot in the end.Great views out over the lawn to the lake and beyond. Perfect.Champagne arrived promptly and my wife who doesnt eat meat asked the member of staff if she could have salmon instead of the meat sandwiches and it was no problem at all.The plated tier arrived soon after and as requested i got my assortment of sandwiches and she got her salmon and cream cheese. She was very happy.Amazing looking array of finger sandwiches fresh scones, clotted cream, jam and mini cakes. We dug in and all was very tasty and enjoyable. We picked our coffees/teas and these arrived in good time.We were able to bag and take away what we couldnt eat but given how much you pay for afternoon tea here i really think they could afford to offer some small cake boxes rather than brown paper bags. Small touch but would be inline with the quality they are trying to purvey here. Its all very relaxed here and there was no rush to finish and with that view who would want to. Staff all very professional and helpful and a great venue but it does all come at a premium !Worth doing but so many other venues here offer afternoon tea for less but perhaps not with the view..

We got off the steamer to have Cream Teas at the Old England - not quite warm enough for the terrace so we chose a sunny window in the lounge. I am gluten free and it appeared that the Old England had nothing to offer me? Our party had their Scones with cream and strawberry jam. I was truly surprised to find no gluten free offerings at all. I risked having half a plain scone. Our young waiter placed items on the table with great care which gave us a sense of occasion nonetheless!

We just had drinks on the terrace, during the afternoon of Saturday 8 April. The sun was shining and it was a nice little sun trap on the terrace. A nice cold drink overlooking the lake in the sunshine - not much more we could have asked for to relax on our first day in Bowness. The prices are a little high compared to normal, but in this quality of hotel and position, we didn't mind too much. We'd highly recommend a visit, especially on a nice day!

Yes, afternoon tea with scones, pastries and sandwiches is GBP24 and I bought it for my mum. The terrace is amazing and the staff nice. I am not sure why so many people are complaining about the price. On each table there are 2 menus and you can decide what to get and for what price. I suggest the finger type sandwiches, amazing and absolutely fairly priced. If you do not like the price on the menu, just go to any other café in Bowness.

Having been brought here by my parents as a child, fond memories surround the hotel so whilst on a two week break and staying in a private house, we chose to visit as non residents! What a mistake!! As we entered the bar, we were glared at by henchmen one behind the bar. On sitting and waiting to order 10 minutes later henchman two arrived after folding his napkins to take the order. A few grunts later we hoped the order was received. Indeed a few moments later henchmen one provided the drinks with the flare of a rampaging rhinoceros after a kill. Henchman two delivered our drinks with a crash of the bar snacks on the table ( I've seen better roadkill) put our drinks on the table and walked away, at no time was any attempt to enter any hospitality spill "thank you' ' can I get you anything else" was offered. We were not made to feel welcome at any point of the visit! Will not be bringing our party here at any time. With Storrs Hall & Belsfield Hotel a short distance away I would advise avoiding! Oh and a guest walked by saying the hotel had "run out of Baileys add that to the list" I guess a hotel guest is not happy with the service either.

After a walk around Bowness we decided to have a drink at this Terrace Lounge, the view was stunning and we decided to sit outside, big mistake there were a lot of wasps flying around which made it difficult to enjoy our drinks and the view, one of the waiters said he was afraid of them and did nothing, another waiter squashed one then walked off, but the sting came when we received our bill! We had two teas and a beer and the bill came to 15 pounds when we queried it, we were informed a cup of tea was 4 pounds 55 pence it was only 10 pence more for a pint of beer.

Whilst on a lake cruise we saw people on the terrace and decided to have an afternoon drink. I ordered a half a pint of lager and a small glass of white wine and was charged £10.70. The lager was nothing out of the ordinary and neither was the wine which was a cheap Australian reisling. The view over the lake was excellent but after paying that much the drinks were hard to swallow. We then went to a pub next door and paid a quarter of that and got twice as much.

Visiting from Australia, we stopped in here for a coffee on a day in the Lakes District to celebrate our 5th wedding anniversary. The location and view was great, with the decor grand and olde world-e, however that's where the pleasantries end. I couldn't have a cappuccino as the "machine" was broken (it would have only been a machine coffee rather than a barrister coffee anyway). The service was cold, and to top it off it cost £8.30 for two hot drinks. It definitely wasn't worth the price premium.

We had travelled to the Lakes to treat our Son and Daughter in Law (who currently live in Italy) to a genuine English Afternoon Tea. We had been devastated to find that our original destination in Coniston was unexpectedly closed (not mentioned anywhere on their website) so we drove around on the off chance we could find somewhere else of the same standard. Walking around Bowness we came across the Old England Hotel and are now thrilled we did so! Excellent Afternoon Tea, good service, great view and a real treat for our Family. thanks you SO much. I have a long association with this hotel both as a resident, a diner and casual drinker going back to when it was a THF hotel. On a day out last week myself and my wife took a boat trip from ambleside to bowness and decided to have a drink overlooking the lake, as we had done in the past, before our return boat. I ordered a white wine spritzer and a pint of lager. I was asked 3 times if I wanted the spritzer with lemonade or soda, the second time the waiter wrote down soda and still came back to check. The terrace had a few discarded beer mats and drink stirrers on the floor. The flat roof ajoining the terrace was a disgrace. It was littered with broken glass from bottles, beer mats, drink stirrers and some sort of white powder. On looking down to the grassed area betweenthe hotel and the lake there are 9 or 10 tables, half of these were stacked up with dirty crockery. When I am paying extortionate prices for drinks, £9.20 for a spritzer I expect clean surroundings to sit next to. The standards at this hotel certainly need addressing, I have had better service and cleaner surroundings at the other macdonalds group. I am not anti macdonalds as I own a macdonalds timeshare in scotland.

We went here for the afternoon tea and sat in a table in the window with the most beautiful view of Lake Windermere, what a way to spend an afternoon. The staff were friendly and helpful, with one of them recommending we have the cocktail with our afternoon tea instead of the champagne we usually have. And he was right! It was absolutely lovely. I tried to catch his eye and he told me he'd be with me in a minute. 5 minutes later he came out again, did nothing, served no one and went back in. Couples and groups at 3 other tables left without ordering. After 20 mins without even seeing a menu we left too. One of the 4 waiters standing around doing nothing at the bar did apologise to us on the way out. The first time I posted this the hotel rejected it saying it wasn't there. How dare they? Used to be a little bit different, a little bit higher quality in ingredients and in beer offerings. Now it’s just the same downgrade Peroni to Nastro etc. Save a few pence but turns the product into the same as everywhere else instead of that small cut above. Such a shame.
