Tendril - A (mostly) vegan kitchen in City of London, Westminster

Need i say this is the best vegan in London!! Such tasty food. The tofu coconut cheesecake is better than "real" cheesecake. I coukd eat it all day! The fennel fritters with garlic aioli are amazing. Everything is fantastically good. Bravo!

I was taken by my daughter and her partner, as a birthday treat. I’m vegan, they are flexitarians. The choice on the menu was great, the staff were very knowledgeable when questioned. They had a vinegar drink - a standout for me as I have ACV intrepid water every morning. I’ve included photos but they don’t do it justice. It was a great menu. We didn’t have a dessert because we were full from the main course, although the plate with Happy Birthday in Ganache and a few chocolate treats, was warmly received. Seriously worth a trip.

The lighting in the restaurant is poor and makes the place look dingey. The walls are bare and definitely not the best environment to take photos. The set menu was very good especially the aubergine and mushrooms. The beetroot was overcooked and disappointing. Most of the time we couldn’t see and appreciate what we were eating. The service was good although our waiter spoke fast and not clearly so half the time we didn’t know what he was saying.

Best bean dip of my life. The atmosphere, the vibe, the staff. Absolutely amazing. The bean dip brought me back home. It was sensational and almost emotional. You can definitely tell the cook puts a lot of love in the food. A little hiccup was that our order had a few mistakes but the place was very busy. Had a lovely dinner here last night. The food was delicious and reasonably priced. Only hiccup was there was a mix up with our roasted carrots, that were going to be served to us 25 mins after we had finished eating and had paid the bill however a waitress with long brown hair and glasses (I should of got her name) redeemed the situation by giving us complimentary banoffee pie which really showed excellent hospitality.

Excellent experience. Food was 5/5, service was 5/5 and atmosphere was 5/5. There was a delay with our second course so we highlighted this to our server who apologised, give us a 25% discount and an extra free dessert. Was overall a 5/5 experience.

on a miserable wet monday evening in January, we were absolutely taken aback by the busy vibe in a delightful veggie restaurant, hidden away in a street with a blocked entry near Oxford Circus. We were seated in a cosy rear section of the dining area, beyond a central bar. We chose the tasting menu & were not disappointed ( a la carte options were also available). Our favourite dishes were the celeriac skewers & the chipotle mushrooms. The service was extremely courteous & efficient, with just the right of pause between the 5 courses. Although we are not vegetarians , we will definitely return on our next visit to London.

It's an in place at the moment, with good reason but also with the liabilities that come with this, both re clientele and the need to be cool. The kitchen is all vegan now, though how either the planet or cows are actually saved by avoiding artisanal cheese from Graubünden is not immediately apparent. The pro-dog policy is rare in good restaurants in the UK, so this is nice. Tables are nicely spaced. For January, there is one set brunch menu for the weekend, no choice. That's nice, but also limiting. Anyway, this is the kind of ugly-honest dish preparation (no eye to the IG) which also doesn't do imitational meat but lives the veg. Bread, aperitiv, two appetizers and the starter were fantastic, and the latter indeed worth any accolade and stars in consistency and taste. Unfortunately, the cauliflower main with salad was merely fine, and the desert just okay - both successful in that the veganness didn't one make miss anything, but in a place like Tendril you want to be wowed, and these were just good, normal dishes. The problem with the seating was that we were hurried because our table was taken later too, and a hurried lunch is not ideal. It's fine and was with our consent, but as much as waiters are in a hurry, to serve the next plate while the previous one is still unfinished on the table is just never okay. That and the averageness of the last two courses (of five) would lead me to give the place four stars rather than five. Prices were quite civil, given how good this is. I think I will be back to try more, then a la carte and with the assurance to be allowed to finish my plates in peace.

I haven't left my home on NYE for about 15 years but I got an email from Tendril (which I've previously reviewed here) and thought, why not? As before, it was perfect. It's packed and they had 3 seatings that night, yet everything seemed to work well. The staff are relaxed but knowledgeable. The food was excellent. Especially the aubergine dish. On both my visits, the pudding has been my least favourite and this time I left it. Will be returning for lunch soon so I can pick and choose from the a la carte menu.

We went for dinner at Tendril and had the festive set menu for two. There is not a lot of signage so the premises are easy to miss when first walking past. Inside the atmosphere is very calm and cosy and you’d never think you were just a few steps away from the chaos of Regents Street. All the staff we encountered during our time there were lovely, knowledgeable and very helpful. The food itself was great. To start with we had an artichoke and cucumber amuse bouche, followed by three sharing dishes (aubergine, Kalamata olives and tahini; lentil parfait and pickled cauliflower stalk with aioli), served with sourdough bread. The portions were a great size to get a substantial taste without filling you up too much. For the next course I had roasted squash with a potato crumb, my husband had the non-vegan sesame feta with chilli honey, both of which were delicious. Next we had celeriac and harissa skewers which tasted really festive and fit the Christmas menu perfectly. Our final savoury course was a mushroom and smoked potato pie, served with a butterbean purée and chive emulsion, which was also very tasty. For dessert, we had sticky toffee pudding which was light and very flavourful. And because we were celebrating a special occasion, they brought us a portion of vegan tiramisu with a candle in which was a lovely touch. Overall a lovely menu with a great variety of vegan foods and flavours, wonderfully presented. The standout for me was the pickled cauliflower with aioli, it was a very clever and balanced dish which I could’ve eaten a lot more of because of the delicious combination of flavours. Personally I really don’t like the “A (mostly) vegan kitchen & bar” tagline that appears alongside the name everywhere - it cheapens the place a bit and feels like a statement of non-commitment to vegan cuisine. I also feel the place is undersold by calling it a ‘Kitchen & Bar’ rather than just being known as a restaurant. It feels far more classy than that label. I certainly wasn’t expecting the quality we ended up getting, based on that alone. ‘Tendril’ on its own would feel much more elegant in my opinion.

Mostly very good food here. There is no a la carte option at the weekend, so you are stuck with the set menu, which is not great value if compared with the a la carte, and also somewhat limits the number of dishes you can have to share. The Festive Menu was on offer. The first couple of courses were excellent, especially the sharing plates. However, the later "main" courses were a little lacking in originality and flavour. Wine options are a little limited at the reasonable end of the wine list, with the ever-popular "second from the top" white wine crossed off. The replacement, from Turkey, was interesting to try, but nothing special, especially for the price. However, the Jalapeno Margarita was definitely worth it! I'd certainly try it again, but probably on a night when you can have the a la carte in order to try a wider variety of dishes. It is a good, buzzy restaurant, and considering it is very close to both Christmas and Oxford Street, didn't feel too crowded. Service was good, and they provided a lovely "Happy Birthday" cake.

A perfect evening - Food is amazing- staff are amazing- atmosphere is great. We both choose the Festive Christmas Menu- excellent value for money- on every small plate- so tasty and every plate looked so tempting- and tasted even better. Special note - Victoria our server/hostess- was very friendly, informative- yet professional- thank you for making our evening Special!!! This is not the first time we have visited- and would recommend without hesitation - booking is necessary, although I believe they offer some tables to walk-ins. This is amazing, inventive and special food. What a treat! The festive set menu was a smorgasbord of delightful surprises. This six course menu was generous and lovingly prepared. There were too many delicious dishes and unique flavours to describe here, but I want to mention some of our particular highlights: The lentil parfait was finger-licking good. The crispy celeriac was a revelation. The festive crumble was scrumptious. The tendril margarita was a special treat. The restaurant is small, dark and very busy, but the food more than makes up for the somewhat oppressive and noisy atmosphere. I hope tendril thrives and can spread its wings, because food like this deserves to shine in a grander setting.

It was the first time at Tendril for all 4 of us and we agreed we’d definitely be back. The food was absolutely delicious - we had the Festive set dinner and everything was such good quality, with amazing taste and texture. Plus a good atmosphere and lovely waitress. We had a great evening.

Fantastic restaurant and we thank chefs and staff for a really enjoyable and interesting experience. I’d written a note with my booking with seating preference and dietary requirements and really appreciate the restaurant’s response, making us feel very comfortable and taking dietary requirements in their stride, it’s really nice to feel so welcome even with intolerances and allergies. The waiting staff were excellent - informative, relaxed and friendly, and the restaurant generally had a great atmosphere and feeling about it, with great interior decoration, colours and lighting. The dishes were clearly prepared with great care and love and generosity. Highlights were the white bean, crackers with the tasty Chinese sauce, and the two deserts banoffee pie and baked cheesecake. No criticisms at all other than we probably ordered a dish too many, as didn’t realise the aubergine would be a larger portion and very generous! Thanks too for having really interesting non alcoholic drink options on the menu. We look forward to returning.

I echo all the other negative reviews regarding the awful, rude and inconsiderate customer service I received. Unfortunately I had to cancel my booking due to illness. I was being considerate in calling 7 hours in advance to let the restaurant know and my focus was to reschedule. The rude member of staff who answered the phone claimed there was some medical hierarchy as to what is a suitable reason to cancel yet couldn’t clarify what this actually entailed and expected me to go into detail. Ridiculously unprofessional. The initial confirmation email it states a charge “may” apply yet no follow ups, notifications or calls to verify the booking and to confirm. While I totally agree a no show should warrant a charge, but to not be understanding of having to cancel due to illness is ridiculous and highlights the restaurants sole interest in money over customer experience. The fact I couldn't reschedule and not incur the £20pp charge is also ridiculous. Avoid this place, there are so many better options where restaurants value their customers not just the money in the till. I will never rebook. I suggest whoever answers the phone takes some lessons in customer service.

Really loved the tasting menu - the perfect vegan treat. Indulgent but not heavy! The staff were really lovely too. Only downside was there wasn't much of an 'atmosphere' but probably because we had such an early dinner booking.
