I'm not really one to add poor reviews but after eating here today I have to say something even if it prompts an overhaul of their kitchen. It was the worst meal I've eaten in a pub. Chips were cold, the peas, carrots, brocolli were frozen and heated up, and the cod, well, I'm pretty sure it was a frozen piece from Aldi and heated in the microwave. Best part of the meal was the Luscombe Ginger Beer.... which is always a winner. Poor form Tavistock Inn, you got to do much better.

We ate here on holiday and we have become a big fan of the pubs and this one too. It's quaint and cozy, the people are warm, relaxed and have a sense of mischief. The innkeeper has an eye on everything and provides excellent service inside. He immediately sees when glasses are empty and charmingly asks for more. Even the next day the innkeeper still has an idea of what was ordered the day before and asks when he comes in. Even when we were sitting outside it wasn't an issue. Dogs shouldn't have an issue with cats here (because they run freely inside and outside) and should otherwise be relaxed on a leash. Then some regular guests get a cookie and some nice cuddles. The quality of the food was outstanding, we have rarely all been as enthusiastic about the food as we were here, the food is freshly prepared and tastes great 😋 delicious. The kids also decided that we liked this restaurant best on our entire trip up until today. There was laughter and jokes and it was also possible to have a good chat with the locals. We would be happy to come back and pet the cats. My recommendation of the sticky toffee pudding was amazing and the breaded mushrooms with garlic were sought after by the children. Thank you very much for a few great evenings and the excellent food. Warm greetings from Germany.

What a fantastic place, when we walked in the first thing we noticed was the ceiling with the fairy lights and how quirky the pub is inside. We popped in for dinner whilst staying nearby for a business meeting. Slightly nervous given the mix of reviews, and despite being city types we were given a warm welcome by the owners and locals, we met some nice dogs and the pub cat took a liking to us too. There’s a huge menu of home cooked food and desserts. The steaks were delicious, there was a homely atmosphere and a mix of walkers, cyclists, motorcyclists and locals inside. No issues at all. We would definitely come back.

Centuries old pub in Dartmoor, small and full of character, ladies have facilities inside, the Gents is out at the front. Warm on a cold wet night with a lit fire. Food includes vegetarian and basic gluten free meals. Order at the small bar for well cooked, satisfying food. Get the down-to-earth landlord talking (not difficult :) and find a very open and interesting window on local life in the demanding environment of the moor. When we're all being served food and drink by robots in generic roadside boxes we'll remember these places. Recommended.

A beautiful public house, located in the village vetween Princetown and Ashburton. The lady behind the bar was chatty and very friendly. A good choice of beer and lager, and an extensive menu. A great, traditional Dartmoor pub with good company (a friendly cat!), wooden beams, a wood-burning stove, real ales and hearty food. I loved the twig decorations on the ceiling and all the antique curiosities - Sherlock Holmes memorabilia, horse brasses, pixie amulets and various witchy items. If you're looking for a soulless 'gastropub' in a historic building that has had a Premier-Inn-style makeover and its heart and soul ripped out, this rustic old tavern may not be for you!

We've been here before for drinks and one day thought we'd sample the food (I wish we hadn't). My partner ordered the ham, egg and chips which he actually said was nice and lovely ham. I on the other hand ordered the pie. Well this had obviously been reheated possibly more than once as it was very dry filling and pastry. I asked if I could possibly have some gravy and the woman in the kitchen came out and slammed it on the table. My partner commented on how nice the ham was and she totally ignored him. I would have accepted begrudgingly the pie been dry as I had asked for the gravy but her attitude has put us off going there again!

In response to review earlier where diner charged £15.00 for Yorkshire pudding and chips for a child...when we dine here, we and our children decide what we'd like, order for 2 adults, ask for additional plates and share. Have never been disappointed. Have no idea at all why a child was given free range to choose whatever it liked from menu, which, must have been a special request....???? for parent then to take to social media to complain about cost!! The Tavistock like other pubs are a business, need to cover costs to remain open and try so hard to pander to customers ever changing requests and wants. Our local pub here in Salisbury would charge more for a request of Yorkshire pudding and chips, as a special!!

Very disappointed. Had fond memories of this place from years back only for them all to be undone in a heartbeat. Back in the early 2000s I proposed to my wife up on Haytor and this was the first place we visited for a celebratory beer - fast forward to 2023, we thought we'd revisit the place with our children to reminisce. Straight away we were greeted by the miserable old boy (who was rather rude to the customer before us). My wife is gluten intolerant and asked what was available for her to eat. The miserable old man went out back to ask the cook, who said to her we were wasting his time. Offered up no viable options even though we were about to spend north of £100 in this dive. We placed our order, reluctantly. When I returned from the horrid toilet my wife was upset, saying she didn't feel confident in the food being gluten free. I cancelled the food and we just stayed for the drink. I would highly recommend avoiding this poor excuse of a pub. The Forest inn in Hexworthy is great for food and the staff are really accommodating - perhaps the miserable old boy at The Tavistock Inn could learn a thing or two from the guys at The Forest Inn.

Nigel and Sandra have owned this rustic, pretty, characterful pub, ideally located halfway between the A38 and open moor, for as long as I can remember, and one of their fathers had it before that, I think. So they know just how to run it, whatever some of the reviews seem to want, and nothing has really changed for decades - except that now there's a microwave so that food can be served more efficiently. Otherwise they won't be pandering to all this modern gastro-pub 'have a nice day now' over-friendly American mentality. The menu doesnt change much either - fish & chips, scampi, lasagne etc, nothing fancy; and it's relaxing because nobody wastes energy with small talk. This is authentic rural Dartmoor. We are left alone to sit quietly at the bar nursing our pint, or at the main table if we want, at the largest, main table, often reserved for us locals. From there its easy access for smokers to gather at the umbrella'd table outside the front door. Although its quite a small pub, there's usually space, as it doesnt get too busy. If you want lots of people and fancy food you'd probably best go somewhere posh like the recently renovated Dartmoor Inn at Merrivale which serves local organic steaks cooked in front of you, or the Three Crowns at Chagford, but they get booked up days in advance despite charging a fortune! The Rugglestone Inn down the road at Widecombe is under quite new management and is also always heaving, and the Church House Inn at Holne is getting overly busy as well. It was taken over by a family last year who've done it up in a traditional way, and who make a fuss over all their customers, no matter who you are. They're only open on Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. On Sundays they serve freshly cooked roast lunch all day, right til 6pm. Ive never heard that before. Quite mad!

After a walk to Wistman's Wood and beyond on Dartmoor, we returned via Poundsgate on the Princetown to Ashbuton Road - and stopped by for a well-earned beer at the 15th century Tavistock Inn. (TQ13 7NY) What a gem! We were welcomed by landlady, Mandy, and served a pint of Dartmoor Brewery's Jail Ale and Exeter Brewery's Organic Real Ale: both highly desirable brews. We observed there were two Thatcher's Ciders on tap and there was a wide ranging menu, to cater for all tastes. The pub is quite unique in that its many nooks and crannies look quite original and have not been spoilt by 'modernisations' down the ages. Apparently, it is one of England's oldest pubs, being built in 1413. For visitors to mid- and south-Dartmoor, a visit to The Tavistock Inn is a must!

There were peas and carrots and broccoli with the fish pie, and peas and chips with the chicken and ham. The chicken and ham pie portion was quite small, but OK for a lunch. The fish pie was a good size. There were a good s selection of beers for those not driving including real ale. Would we stop again? We booked a table in advance and advised that we had two, well behaved dogs. On arrival we were greeted by sullen looks and a small corner table. The fish pie was the worst I have eaten with grey-brown cubes of frozen fish, the Chips...

Very disappointing experience as this pub was recommended by the hosts of our accommodation. The lady behind the bar was curt and abrupt and had an expression which made me want to turn on my feel and leave. The food was overpriced and ‘average’ is...

Stopped off on our way for a walk. The pub was beautiful, but staff very unwelcoming. Seemed very friendly with locals they knew passing by, but cared not a wink for us patrons.

We stopped for lunch whilst walking on Dartmoor. Made to feel very welcome. The pub was busy. It was lovely being sat by the fire enjoying haddock and mozzarella fishcakes and pork tenderloin.

After a wet day on Dartmoor we were happy to get inside this warm and cosy pub. Dogs Welcome sign wasn’t wrong - our elderly and very tired Boxer girl was given the best seat in the house by the landlord - right in front...

I get frustrated when a pub seems to be popular simply because of its location and in spite of the service/attitude of the hosts. The Positive First: Steak & Kidney Pie was superb, Good old fashioned shortcrust pastry pie with plentiful and delicious filling, served...

Rude Landlord who was working behind the bar! His frosty welcome and rudeness was incredibly shocking! Other people on trip advisor seem to think the same. The meals are microwave food and there’s only two ales to choose from so very poor indeed! Better off...

Once you step inside you see a delightful pub, shame the positivity stops there. The woman behind the bar was not welcoming at all, the food wasn’t too bad. Literally no atmosphere in there either. We sat next to the log burning fire and as...

Heard good reviews about their Sunday lunch so gave it a try, it was well organised which sometimes carvery’s aren’t, they do 2 sessions we went at 12pm so it was all fresh and plenty there. The food was lovely and enough different vegetables for everyone, the meat was all very tender I had beef & turkey and my husband had turkey & pork. Great value for money too, could fault it. Although full we couldn’t resist afters which were also very tasty. Will definitely return.
