Tavern & Galley in North Tyneside

We had booked a table so when we arrived we waited at a point were lots of menus were on display but there was no signage to say wait here to be seated eventually after about ten minutes a young waiter asked are you alright, having told him we had a table booked he ignored all the tables with reserved signs on them and proceeded to clear a previously used table and prepare it for us, eventually we were seated and then ignored for another twenty minutes whilst waiter upon waiter wondered by like lost souls they had obviously been told under no circumstances to make eye contact otherwise someone might give you something to do. Eventually we went in search of a waiter and guided him back to our table after another long long long wait we got our food, then the dread decision, do we have pudding, if yes how would we ever get served, we decided to go for it, another hunt for a waiter and another long wait our order arrived, four ice creams and a treacle sponge covered in delicious vanilla custard, well eventually they arrived a small scoop and I mean small scoop of chocolate, vanilla and BUBBLEGUM ice cream at £7,50 a pop and a under clocked tasteless sponge with cold supermarket own brand custard, well I have to tell you they will never have our custom again if they are to make this place a going concern they need to replace the manager,

A disappointing mistake. Deciding spontaneously to go out for Sunday lunch means that the good o places are fully booked. This could be much better - it lacks any passion and some decent management. We had booked and were offered a badly located table in an odd shaped and remote part of the pub. We were allowed to choose any of the other unreserved tables - we just wondered why that table had been allocated when there were so many others. There were many members of staff - at one point 4 behind the bar - chatting to each other, drinking and on their mobiles - not much attention to people in the pub. The young members of staff just seemed to need a bit of guidance and nurturing. We had roast beef. It was OK - a little tough. The Yorkshires seemed to have been a on a hot plate for a while - so were just crispy. Some of the vegetables were a little hard - others overcooked - it was quite random. The greens were a challenge. No one seemed too bothered what the customer experience was - there was a lethargy consuming the whole place. And yet the beef was £19! In summary it was a mistake to try here - someone needs to take it in hand as there is potential for it to be a pleasant place to eat.

Third time we have had Sunday lunch and although tasty once again it was cold. Won't be returning

Food was ok, meal service was ok. But please be aware, if you don’t turn up with the exact number of people on a booking (you pay £5 deposit per head), they won’t refund the deposit - even if the bill is well in excess of the total deposit. In our case, a family couldn’t make it due to last minute kid illness (we let them know as soon as possible), however they still added an extra £20 to the bill despite the bill being £90. Then, you will spend 20 minutes arguing, as I did, only to be told “we will let you off this time, but don’t do it again” by a patronising manager. Don’t worry, we won’t as we won’t be returning 😂. No need to book anyway as it’s half empty. No wonder the place keeps going bust.

Large portions of delicious food, to much to finish for me, but really nice atmosphere , staff were very efficient and pleasant

Really disappointing, we ordered a Camembert which came with a solid/cold centre. We sent it back to the kitchen & it was given back to us after 5 mins after clearly being in the microwave ☹️

Having gone here yesterday, for the first time, sadly I have to say we will not be back. We took 2 of our grandchildren (15 & 11) for lunch. They both had the fish & chips. The fish portion was huge & the batter lovely & crisp. My husband had the halloumi wrap which was tasty, & I ordered the haddock Welsh rarebit with soft poached egg. It was quiet when we arrived & the food was brought to the table in good time. However, my dish was far from appealing. It consisted of 2 crumpets, some congealed rarebit mix, an extremely firm poached egg & a dry-looking piece of smoked haddock. Not even a lick of butter or oil on the fish. My husband returned it to the bar & the staff member came 5mins later, saying it would just be a couple of minutes. 15 minutes later there was still no sign of it, or the manager with any form of an apology. By this time the rest of the table had finished their meals so my husband requested a refund for mine, despite the fact he was told it was "just coming". The manager was called for this, who muttered "sorry about that" without even looking up from the till. What a shame that one poor dish & a badly handled complaint spoilt the visit. I suggest training is needed in both management & kitchen areas.

Always well cooked tasty and well presented food.

Repeatedly have Lovely meals... Always busy. Enjoy coming here as can bring our dog after his walk. Great atmosphere and friendly staff. Mixed Veg side plate needs further thoughts as it came with half of cabbage and a few strands of carrots!!! That is not mixed vegetables to me. Other than that the rest was ok.

Called in for a late lunch yesterday for the first time, I ordered hot beef sandwich with chips and yorkshire pudding, it wasn't warm and tasted most unpleasant, the chips had an awful taste the beef inside the sandwich was cold and the yorkshire pudding was just awful. I was offered an alternative but just wanted to leave at this point, I wasn't offered a refund, maybe I should have asked for one. I definitely won't return.

Amazing food, loads of beers on tap, friendly and welcoming staff. Visited on a Saturday lunch time and was starving as we had skipped breakfast! Looked at the menu and they do certain dishes in a small portion for a couple of quid cheaper. We opted for fish and chips, scampi and chips and a Margherita pizza. All of the food was nice and piping hot throughout the meal. We were asked a couple of times how our food was, which was nice. The pub is dog friendly and there were a fair few owners with their dogs in. We don't mind it. Only criticism is the drinks are a bit on the pricey side (paid £12.75) for two pints. I can't really blame the pub for this due to increases all round. Just hope this pub carries on in these difficult times because the food is amazing. Will be back!

Have been to this pub many times before and have never been told my dog can't sit on my knee....seemingly head office rules ! ! Dog friendly should be dog friendly..🥱😡

Excellent Sunday lunch, really good quality and generous portions. Only downside was service was slow and there were long waits for courses (we were there 2 hours and only had 2 courses).

Tried Sunday lunch. Paid nearly 40 pound for 2 cold lamb dinners. Little turnip. 1 piece of carrot. Couple bits of cabbage and 2 potatoes. When we told the waitress it was cold she took them away and returned a couple of minutes later with same plates straight out of the microwave . 40 quid for 2 microwave dinners. Disgusting. With drinks I asked for a glass of rioja. Wast told none. Asked for malbec . Same answer. Asked for a temprinillo. The guy spent 3 or 4 minutes looking in the white wine fridge before I told him it was red. A pino grigio for the wife. Again. None. Not good at all. Staff don't know basic wines and really poor overpriced microwave food.

Great local spot for freshly made scampi and hand cut chips. Perfect to eat in but also ideal to grab a quick takeaway and eat out with a stunning view over St. Mary's Lighthouse.

Hi. The main body of the pub is beautiful. Fresh, new and stylish. Smelt of wood fire and food. Lush. The women's toilets had a random plank of wood there, board on the floor and outside it unfinished and untidy, by the accessibility lift. I wanted the food to be fab, given the price. We don't eat out often. Was it the huge plates that made the portions seem small? My 6 Yr olds burger from the kids menu was overdone, so she rejected it. I ate it and it was overcooked. My 9 Yr old enjoyed the kids pasta. My hubs curry he enjoyed, smelt and looked lovely and super spicy hot. I had sausage and chips. I don't regret going, nice atmosphere 😊 but we'll try elsewhere next.

Any food venue which allows 4 dogs to ly about an stretch out all over the floor is no hygienic and does not suit Bobby anda!@

Attend the Wednesday night quiz. What I liked: the refurbished venue is great, nice fresh environment. Great selection of beers. The quiz was good with a great turn out. Free bowl of chips.

Didn't try the food but enjoyed a couple of drinks here with a friend and had an enjoyable experience. The drinks are reasonably priced and the service was prompt and provided by a friendly, welcoming staff. They're pet friendly too so a good place to pop in for a sit down if you walk your dog on the beach nearby

Second visit last night. First visit the service was excellent with staff really looking after our large group. Last night total opposite..... Needed to ask for menus, for someone to take our food order and to take payment.... Whilst there were 3 or 4 staff chatting at the bar. Food as good as it was the first time but this poor service made the whole experience disappointing and the group won't be rushing back.

very slow service limited vegetarian options on lunchtime specials , server reluctant to offer smaller portions - from childrens menu for 12yrs and under , could be more accommodating reasonable venue , light and airy but lacks atmosphere food arrived staggered for 2 persons not socially ideal when out for lunch , ice cream melting on arrival

Lovely decor since it's been done out. The food is excellent. Had lovely halloumi tacos. Really good puddings. Service is always fast and the people are lovely. Bowls and snacks for the dogs

So it would be 5* it not for one issue. We have been here numerous times for food and drinks, on sunday we asked for a pizza for my son who will only eat pizza. They do not serve pizza on a sunday and told us we could order one and bring it inside. Then returned and told us we could not bring in a pizza. Tho we had 9 people ready to eat and drink.

Had Afternoon tea today with a friend at T&G . This was excellent. It was fresh with a brilliant choice. Scones and cakes were fab . Best cakes I've ever had on an afternoon tea. The choice of sandwiches was very different from the norm very fresh though believe it or not there was actually too any of them enough to take home and share with my husband. Some of them might not be everyone's choice but they suited me. You also got two sausage rolls and a tasty Quiche Well worth £25 ,would definitely recommend. Will be back

Great pub. Excellent beer. Friendly atmosphere.

First time back since the refurbishment and what a venue. We have monkfish skewers and then steak pie both excellent. Prices are on the higher side, food was piping hot however service was a little slow for a Saturday afternoon we waited approx 45 mins for our meals. We will be back 👍👍

Very nicely done out, with a great selection of food including afternoon tea and a large variety of drinks. Has sufficient parking to the side and rear with another large carpark situated 2 minutes away right on the coast. This place has loads of wall mounted TVs so is great for sporting events

Everything was great, however I’ve deducted one star as the menu on the table seems quite vague. Burgers don’t mention whether they come with fries/onion rings etc when they did and there are no dessert menus on the tables.

Having just moved to the area, was keen to visit my new local. Fabulous place. Really nice decor, friendly staff and great food. Will definitely be becoming a regular.

We went to this pub-restaurant, it is located about 20 minutes walking along the coast, very pleasant walk, enjoying a very nice afternoon. The place is very spacious, next to a, less nice, garage. Inside it is nice and spacious. The service is good, but they don't come to the table, you have to place the order at the bar. It has a variety of liquors and beers, but only 3 or 4 types of cocktails. The food menu is varied, but unfortunately that day they don't have steak. Food well presented and large portions, good prices.

We only had a bottle of wine . We will return

Paid a deposit to book a table, when we arrived it was a reduced menu plus items also out of stock off the reduced menu, the manager agreed to process a refund but I never received it, now they are saying I can’t have a refund, why would a company do that, no one wants to resolve the issue just leaving it to the staff to pass messages on, I even went back in to check it was processed & again confirmed it was, do not believe a word this company says a terrible & disgusting way to run a business, I don’t live anywhere near to go back in either, worst company I have ever dealt with

Shocking tough roast beef cold roast potatoes and vegetables. Had beef replaced with chicken again cold roast potatoes and vegetables. What a disgrace for a beautiful restaurant in prime position on sea front.

Really good food, delicious and lots of choice. The staff were friendly, efficient and helpful. I only gave 4 stars for atmosphere because at times it was quite noisy as the rooms are big and a bit echoey. Will definitely be back though.

Just had 3 meals which were OK. When they had been delivered to the table, neither one of the 2 waitresses offered any salt, vinegar or sauces, I had to get up and ask for them myself. Neither did they return to ask if everything was OK with our meals, as is usually the case with all other restaurants we have visited. The 2 eggs on my gammon were overcooked and very crispy with solid yolks which was disappointing, although my 15 year old son polished them off. Once we'd finished and a waiter came over to clear the table, he also didn't ask us if everything was OK. Not a bad experience but the service could have been better.... runny eggs next time please!

Staff could do with some supervision and guidance from management. Sorry to leave this negative review but the people in our company were disappointed with the lack of organisation and attention customer service

Just popped in for a drink ...... intending to go in again for some food which looked really nice.

Ordered scampi and chips and fish and chips, Sent meals back because we ordered triple cooked chips , manger came over with meals and said they were triple cooked chips, they clearly were NOT ,They were frozen Chips !!! Utter Rubish for the Price!!

We went here yesterday 14th May 2024, the staff are amazing lovely place plenty of parking, great food and drink, the only reason I never gave it a 5 was I ordered tempura prawns with my steak but they were just 3 prawns in their own shell no tempura batter, plus one of the prawns still had the black vein in the back. Would go back though.

The food was nice .We were informed,there would be a 25min wait .The food came after 15mins. So pretty good.

Much better after the second refurbishment, the first refurbishment was like a shipyard canteen. A central bar with several inside seating areas and outside seating. Carpark to the side and wheelchair accessible.

Food was beautiful hot well presented staff was polite well mannered very helpful would recommend this establishment and very dog friendly 5+

First visit but won’t be our last. Visited first thing on a Sunday. Lovely decor, very cosy! Sat next to the fire which was delightful! Food delicious, bit on the pricier side but worth it. Staff all very welcoming and eager to serve. Very spacious, nice to see tables not crammed together.

Great food and excellent service. We were there for a 50th wedding anniversary and service was brilliant. Thanks to Reece for looking after us all night. Highly recommend

Tea was awful (one teabag in the pot). Beef stottie beef tasted of liver and was a strange texture, as if it had been steamed. Dirty toilets with poo marks in the bowl. The touch points on the toilet doors hadn’t been wiped and there was dirt on the tiles, under the driers. A disgrace for a newly opened venue.

It was a very enjoyable experience, The food was absolutely fantastic. Service was polite and quick, enjoyed every minute of my stay.

Very pleased to have this open again and doing well. Drinks are reasonably priced and the food is good. Just had a Sunday lunch with really excellent meat 👍 A small point - they really need to finish / tidy up the building work.

Exceptional quality and reasonable price for what is a chain pub. Staff super cheery if a little inexperienced, not that it made a difference to the great time had.

This used to be the best chippy in Whitley, it now doesn't exist! What a tragedy!

My son had his 30th birthday celebration at the Tavern and Galley recently. Jay was immensely professional and helpful: he set up an area of the pub to facilitate a private function, and was so attentive throughout — ensuring everything ran smoothly. I ordered pizzas and side orders for our guests, and the food was delicious; the staff serving our tables were very polite and helpful, too. Fantastic venue, great atmosphere, helpful staff, and delicious pizzas — would definitely recommend.

Had high expectations about my lunchtime visit and on first entry of this establishment I was not disappointed. The inside is well decorated and plush and very welcoming with separate areas throughout to eat more privately if you wish. I also loved the fact that dogs are welcomed with well behaved owners a touch always welcomed at a sea side venue. I ordered croque monsieur but was disappointed with the food when it arrived. The bread was hard to chew through, the ham although plentiful was one thick piece and very dry and the cheese was quite sparse turning what should have been a rather decadent ham and cheese sandwich into a hard to eat sandwich, I was pleased I asked for extra sauce as this did help. Would i return to this pub, most certainly i would but i would order something different next time, something that is their speciality maybe?

First time here. Used to visit a lot when Briardene. Was one of our friends birthday so thought we'd give it a try. Really nicely done, good atmosphere and staff friendly and helpful. Food was pretty good. Served quickly by very friendly staff. But what a shame about the price of drinks. 2 wine, 1 spritzer and 1 pt.....£36.55!! I needed oxygen. Blimey. I just don't know how those prices can be justified. I don't mind paying a little extra but that's just OTT. I won't be going back but only for that reason.

Roast beef was very fatty and tuff. Disappointing, won't be going back !

This is the first time I have been here since it was done out. Its been done to a really high standard which is a good indication of what to expect. We had lunch, the food was lovely and the staff were really nice. My friend and I had chose from the light bite/ starter menu and had the black pudding Scotch Egg and the 3 fish, both were really nice. The table next to us had the burger and fries which looked really nice. I'm definitely intend to go back on an evening

Generally a good offering. Drinks service and ordering was quick. Food service was a little slow. Food was good. But please sort out your small tables. Many have feet missing and are unsuitable for use. It would cost little to solve. Just do it.

Service & atmosphere was fine, food very poor standard, ordered Steak with egg & beans, a whole layer the waiter came back & said ‘No Beans’ so ordered 2 eggs, only to be told ‘No eggs’!!!!! Certainly won’t be making a return trip
