See reviews for New Inn, same ownership, Dirty rooms, terrible food. I would not stay here for free.

We booked a table for some food and all I can say is WOW!!!! Absolutely delicious. It was not very busy whilst we were in there but the staff were very friendly and welcoming. If you need a place to eat then this is definately the place to go 🙂

Quirky little village pub. Busy with locals watching the rugby. Friendly atmosphere and welcoming owner. Unfortunately wasn't serving meals the weekend we went, but will return to try the food 😁

A wonderful pub with a good local atmosphere lovely lady and great large portions of food Some may not like the style of the pub as it is a proper original pub not a modern one where u are served and forgotten brilliant place

Found this hidden gem whilst driving to Pwllheli. Very atmospheric circa.1530 pub. Portions are very very generous- all locally sourced produce, great real ale. I ordered the Tanat Mixed Grill - absolutely outstanding and HUGE!!! Friends had Ham, Egg and chips and cheese/onion sandwich - all HUGE portions and all locally sourced.

Went for Sunday lunch. Cosy historic atmosphere. Ordered 'vegetable au gratin' served with ciabatta. Informed that they were out of breadcrumbs (!) for the topping. Received a large plateful topped with cheesy potatoes. I put my fork in expecting a selection of vegetables only to pull out tagliatelle! Further investigation revealed that the main ingredient was pasta! A small handful of vegetables (some undercooked) were scattered around the edge of the plate. Two large pieces of ciabatta arrived along with a side of chips. Four portions of carbs and hardly any vegetables! Not what I expected or wanted and much was left uneaten. My four meat eating relatives all enjoyed their meals apart from the accompanying vegetables which had hardly been cooked and were almost raw. The portions were very large which resulted in some waste. Overall very disappointed.

Friendly staff, friendly customers, great food and reasonable prices. Cant fault the place. Its true that there is some need for internal decorating, however, this in no way detracts from the experience. We all know that pubs are having a hard time making ends meet, so lets give these people some credit!!! We will be going back, in fact we have, time and again. I had the mixed grill, never have I seen (or eaten) anything like it!!!

On first impressions the Tanat does seem a bit tired and dowdy but once you get settled in you realise it's pleasant and friendly and then comes the food. You need to be hungry as there is plenty of it and all the meals were excellent. If it's good food at reasonable prices you want then pay a visit.

Decor could do with a bit of work but the food is fantastic. Hubby had a burger and I had the pork with stilton sauce, we couldn't fault either.

Nice staff. Lovely hand cut chips, however the place felt grubby, ceiling peeling, toilet area horrible and all the table cloths were filthy. Not nice to sit on a table staring at the previous persons food that has been dropped all over the table. The whole place felt dirty and it wasn’t a pleasant experience. Would never go again.

Popped in for a Sunday roast, by accident on our way back from the waterfall. We were starving. Saw the sign for Sunday roast, so we stopped. So glad we did, this was the best roast beef dinner we have had for a very long while. One word FANTASTIC!!!

Nice staff, some interesting things on the menu, but its probably better if you don't deviate from the tried and tested pub favourites. Unfortunately I opted for the Swordfish with garlic prawns, I absolutely love swordfish and ate a lot of it when I lived in Cyprus, this particular piece was rock hard and I borrowed one of our parties steak knives to cut it. It was accompanied by the largest portion of tiny garlic shrimp you have ever seen, I was very disappointed - it was not what i was expecting. Another in our party had the fish and chips which he declared totally tasteless. The steak and the burger the others in our party had were fine apparently. I don't want to pan a nice little village pub/hotel but would suggest you stay away from the more adventurous options on the menu,

Excellent food, huge portions & very reasonably priced. The down side very poor service, totally ignored, no guidance on table availability or how to order. We weren't asked if our food was ok or if we wanted a sweet. If you want to pay by card then you have to go to the pub across the road. Tables were left dirty. Such a shame that the bar staff let the Chef down.

Great news, Pete the Chef is back in the Tanat. Tonight we both had the King Prawn & Mushroom risotto and it was excellent with a side of salad and ciabatta. This pub is now a must if you want quality food. Will be open next weekend, then after that Wednesday through to Sunday.

Sad news folks, the superb chef has left the Tanat and at the moment only open Friday and Saturday evening but no food. If food is required you will have to visit the new inn across the road.

New chef started producing excellent food. A good diverse menu to suit all. 2 real ales, both in good condition. The atmosphere in the bar is friendly and chatty. Recommended

Ate here following the arrival of a new chef and have to say the food was wonderful , all cooked fresh to order so don't expect a fast food type service but well worth the slightly longer than average wait for a pub meal. I had Swordfish Thai green curry, really tasty and beautifully presented. The chips are probably the best I've ever had.

We stayed here for two nights and had dinner here on the first night. The food was of good quality and we had plenty of it. The chips are particularly good. The bar is small and cosy and visitors and local people mix in an easy and congenial atmosphere.

Stopped for a drink and a meal here. The bar is quite small but very quaint old worldly. Like a proper pub should be. The meal was excellent. Good home made wholesome cooking. The chips are to die for. Proper hand cut not out of a freezer. And big portions. Well worth stopping off here in this beautiful valley.

Absolutely disgusting customer service. We were waiting for family to meet us before heading in as a group for drinks, we were greeted by the owner or chef (not sure which) asking what we were doing and instructing us to get out of her car park. We were planning to be paying customers. We went in to ask if she was ok with us coming in and she said she didn’t want us to come in as we hadn’t rang ahead.

The Old Black Lion was the perfect intimate dinner venue on a cold winter saturday evening. All three courses me and my partner had was scrumptious, the white bait starter was particularly note-worthy, large for whitebait, juicy and crispy. The mains was also very good value (you can't go wrong with the steak). The atmosphere was idyllic, is as cosy an old pub can get. If you want an escape from the centre of Hay that's still only walking distance, this is where you should have your dinner.

Greg’s are having a problem with their sliding doors and someone is going to get hurt, all for a little oil on the runners. Just watched one person walk away. They will lose customers.

Me and the partner popped over after visiting family! We had the starters a share meals. I MUST know how to make the nacho sharer! Incredible. The pint was also very much needed! Thank you 🙏 the staff were so helpful and patient for an indecisive gal like me! ❤️

Great stay, good location for motorbike rides from and back to the hotel. Just a shame the restaurant was closed till further notice, but it's not a huge issue as there are several other places to eat within walking distance.
