absolutely incredible experience every time i visit. staff remember my regular (not expected at all, but a lovely surprise). i visit roughly every month or two and have been coming here for 4 years and despite relocating in that time, staff have always been consistent in their fantastic service and the food quality has always been fantastic. they respect allergies which is amazing for an authentic east asian restaurant outside of london. worth every penny.

What a sensational place this is! Staying in Ipswich for a few days, and found this lovely restaurant by chance. Food - just so fresh and delicious. The sushi platter was plentiful and flavourful, and mango on the roll? What a subtle touch. Amazing sashimi quality, my daughter’s Tonkotsu ramen was so flavourful. Faultless, even at 8pm on a Sunday when I know they will have been tired. One of the best Japanese restaurants we’ve ever visited outside of Japan, clearly still respectful and traditional to Japanese dining culture. Service and just everyone working there capped though. You were just so lovely to us with our two children and I just want to say thanks for being so kind. Oh, and the decor is wonderful! Honestly I’d eat here every day if we lived here. World class.

Takayama has the best sushi in Ipswich! Too many to choose from and every one of them would not disappoint you. My husband is British and his first sushi was here! Since then we’ve been coming here whenever we crave for sushi because they’re top quality! Forgot to take pictures of the hot starters, we got yakitori and tori karaage.

Yet another lovely meal here. This time tried some sushi and maki. The kimchi was delightful, as usual. So glad they had GF soy sauce too, to dip the sushi in. The wine glass was dirty, but they were happy to change and it and apologetic.

Absolutely lovely restaurant with a nice authentic atmosphere and fantastic decor inside. Roomy with more tables on the 1st floor. Food was heavenly and beautifully presented. Really, really tasty. Service was exceptional, polite and friendly. If I could give more than 5 stars I would. Definitely worth a visit. We will be coming back soon. Also the Japanese whisky is one of the best ones I've tried.

Pork ribs are absolutely first class.

Having visited Japan last year and eaten the most amazing food, we were keen to see what Takayama was like. It's a very pleasant venue, with big tables and plenty of space. The food was excellent. My Ramen couldn't match the seriously good Ramen we had in Japan, but it'll cost you a lot more to fly there! The dumplings were very good. Price wise, it was reasonable. Around £100 for 3 people with a bottle of wine. Far more pricey than Japan, but, again, Ipswich is a lot closer to home and the yen is very weak against the pound.

The restaurant didn’t disappoint us with food and atmosphere... although a big minus for planning the tables! When I was booking a table I was informed that it was only for 2 hours... ok we accepted it although it would have been nicer to have unlimited time because it was my birthday. We were on time I asked about a nice table also when I was booking but I got information that popular tables were already taken...? Hmm... Our table was not bad either but it was surprising that one of the planned tables was empty all the time during our stay and longer! We are understan that everyone wants to have a nice time! But it was too much when we saw that there were a few free tables including the one that was very popular all the time empty. We were the ones who got the bill without having a chance to ask for more time or I don’t know to keep customer who what stay and pay more... We understand that we had a 2 hour time but when there were a few other empty tables also and the top floor was opened and people were let in... we got the bill and info they are people came to take our table…?!? It was very unpleasant specialy there was few empty tables….! You should plan tables better!

Went here for Valentine’s Day, and while the food was absolutely delicious—perfectly seasoned, fresh, and beautifully plated—it was the live singer that truly made the night unforgettable. The romantic, cozy atmosphere paired with soulful live music created the perfect setting for a special evening. The singer’s voice was mesmerizing, setting the mood just right without being overpowering. It added such a unique and intimate touch to the experience. Would definitely come back, not just for the amazing food but for the incredible vibe! Highly recommend for a date night! 💕✨

Pleasing experience but portion size is weird and unexpected. Decent flavor in general. Pros: 1. Good service. When I asked for tap water from a 5 meters distance, the male staff understood me and served nicely. 2. Good atmosphere, see other reviews, nice decor 3. Fair price - About 15 quid for Lunch Menu isn't the best price, but it's fair given the vibe. Cons/Question Mark 1. Bibimbap is too spicy and has 1.5 to 2 portion size than expected. 2. Tonkarsu curry rice - rice and curry portion size is too small, 0.3 to 0.5 portion size than expected. 3. Miso soup - too much miso was added and/or mix well, cannot finish the last sip as it was mido paste that remains. 4. Green tea - Served in a good teapot and 4.2 for a pot than for more than 1 portion is reasonable. But I was expected a portion for 2, it turns out to be a portion for 4.

Had a fantastic meal here. Four of us all enjoyed the whole experience. Food, service, atmosphere all first class. Thoroughly recommended.

Very impressed with the flavor of my food. The Korean dish was spot on and one of my favorites whenever I find it. The restaurant service was great. The interior was bright and beautiful. It felt very warm and open compared to restaurants in the area.

One of the best restaurants i’ve been to. Service was very polite and helpful, the restaurant was clean and tidy with a very nice layout. Everyone who worked there went above and beyond to make the experience pleasant for all customers regardless of party size. Food was served in large portions and not too expensive - a surprise to me! Overall no complaints at all. I had the Beef Teriyaki and my girlfiend had the chicken ramen. Both were nicely laid out and very flavoursome. I will definitely be coming again.

Just received an order containing Mango Bubble Tea and Miso Glazed Ribs. The Tea was missing the bubbles/lychee jelly bits and Ribs contained only 2 full sized ribs (for £8.50), plus had a human hair baked into the glaze! Have ordered several times previously without issues, but tonight’s order fell well below par. To top it off, they didn’t even include the complementary mixed fruit like they’ve always done. Very disappointed.

I haven't had the pleasure of dining at Takayama but I contacted them to organise a dinner event. In the end we decided to go for a bigger venue but we have been incredibly impressed by the care and professionalism shown by Takayama in dealing with our enquiry. We would definitely contact them again to organise a smaller event.

The restaurant has a sophisticated interior design that creates a fantastic atmosphere. The service is high standard and the food is to die for 😊. The cute robotic cat made me smile every time I saw it and added to the lovely feelings of joy. We will certainly visit again 💝

We went at a quiet time so atmosphere was lacking. The waitress and another couldn’t give much advice on what to have so we guessed. Quantity was good. Fish lacked flavour but was very tender. Chicken noodles and Teriaki beef were great. Robot waiter was gimmicky which didn’t even serve us. Overall I’d say a nice change from the norm but better food and experiences about!

The separate gluten free menu was great, perfect place for a group!

Easily one of the best Japanese restaurants in the UK. For what you pay you get amazing quality food that's incredibly tasty haven been to Japan I can say this is my favourite place to visit to get food anywhere close to what I experienced there. I've lost count now of how many times I've come.

The most gorgeous sushi - I even loved the raw tuna and raw salmon sushi (when I don’t at other restaurants). Beautifully prepared and 4 sushi dishes to share between 2 stuffed us both! Even got to witness the kitty robot waitress in action 😻

Japanese restaurant in Ipswich, which is something of a surprise. This is a good standard of restaurant in what is otherwise a good desert town. The service was charming, corona protections well organised, food is good quality Korean-Japanese blend (you could certainly eat a complete Japanese meal here, if you didn’t feel Like mixing cuisines). California rolls were well made, very tasty kimchi, beef yakitori and chicken dishes were good. I can’t comment on sushi or sashimi. I plan to return.

Hadn't been to a Japenese restaurant for a while so was interested to see what this was like. Nice feel to the restaurant but wasn't over impressed with the food or the service. there were 5 of us and it was quite expensive for the quality and standard of the food we had

We have been here a few times, what a fantastic place! We are absolutely loving the food, it's so delicious. It's a family run restaurant, warm and welcoming not a machine maker like other multi places. I'm vegetarian but my husband loves fish and meet and we are both find lovely options that suits our need. I can highly recommend this place💯

Me and my partner come here frequently for our date nights, its one of our favourite locations. The staff are super friendly, often going above and beyond and the food is always amazing. I would highly recommend the bubble tea (especially Strawberry Kiss and the Gingerbread milk tea) I haven't caught the name of the young lady who makes the bubble teas but a little shout out to her for being amazingly sweet and making delicious bubble teas!

For something really special try the dragon roll, spicy and cool!

When we first found this place, we were very keen to go. Went once for lunch and had a lovely time. Twice then I arranged to mee friends there for lunch only to find they were closed and had changed their opening hours. Never know now if the hours I find on the net are real or not, so not been since. Shame, as the meal we had was lovely and I’d love to go again, if only I could be sure it would be open.

Literally obsessed with our visit. The food was amazing. The place is done up so nicely and the service was really good. It was soooo busy and I'm not surprised why! The whole experience was fantastic and I will definitely be back ASAP!

Our first time eating from Takayama after hearing good things. Ordered takeaway through Uber Eats. Oh my GOODNESS this is some next level food. Firstly the presentation in the box is just absolutely gorgeous and completely unlike anything I’ve ever seen from a takeaway before. Not a single drop of anything had spilt despite having bubble tea and various sauces. The bubble tea is absolutely beautiful, with mine having little stars in it and even the straws being beautiful. The flavour is gorgeous. I had the Tako Karaage (fried octopus) which was beautifully cooked, flavour again was insane and it wasn’t too chewy which can be a real problem with octopus. I had the beef teriyaki and I have never tasted steak cooked so well, let alone the fact it was through a takeaway! The portion was huge, with the rice being served separately which meant it didn’t get soggy in the sauce. We also got some free fruit which was a really lovely touch. We will definitely be visiting the restaurant itself soon! My terrible photos really don’t do it justice.

The food is superb. I had the squid starter followed by beef bibimbap and finishing with mango mochi. Service was excellent and I loved the decor. I would recommend.

This place is absolutely amazing, it was my second time coming here and it was even better than the first! The food was really enjoyable and the staff were attentive and were able to tell us what the dishes were from the photos we had previously taken. The bubble tea menu had lots of different choices and the experience overall was very enjoyable.

Everything is delicious except the ramen, but a bit expensive.

First time here. We were initially going to be sat at the table of two by the door which we weren’t happy with as it wasn’t very intimate, the waitress happily found a better table for us upstairs which was perfect for our date! The menu has so many choices!! We’re massive foodies so we initially chose, 2 starters, 1 sushi roll, 1 main and 1 side: calamari (No.9 on the menu), deep fried octopus (No. 19), Sliced Beef Sushi (No. 58), Bulgogi Bibimbap (No 92) and Kimchi, which surprisingly wasn’t quite enough for us so we also ordered the chicken gyoza (No. 6). The food tasted homemade, really good quality and seemed freshly made apart from the kimchi, which tasted like it had been left open in the fridge and that’s what it tasted of which was a shame and that particular roll of sushi seemed rather small compared to the ones we saw on other tables? Highly recommended the deep fried octopus (No. 19), the Chicken Gyoza (No.6) the they were sooo flavourful and yummy! 🤤 It was really busy and vibey in there, but to add to the atmosphere I would have preferred the lights to be dimmed slightly, as it was 8:30pm on a Friday night after all! We’ll definitely be back again to try the rest of the menu!

Affordable, friendly restaurant with carefully-cooked food paired with lovely wine. Our waiter and the lady manager made time for us and ensured our experience was good. Still learning about Japanese food, I hope to return soon.

Anytime I want to go out for dinner I always end up here as no other place can compare - absolutely incredible sushi and excellent selection of other mains. Could not recommend more!

Amazing Japanese food and service! First visit to Takayama and was very impressed . Beautiful restaurant, attentive, friendly and knowledgeable staff. Tables are spacious and well set out . Excellent food, so yummy ! Extensive menu to cater for everyone. Personally I can highly recommend the vegan/vegetarian menu - vegetable tempura roll/tofu terikai and agedashi tofu/yasai katsu curry were all excellent. Family enjoyed the chicken katsu curry/ramen dishes. Bubble tea delicious ! Can't wait to come again soon.

To describe this restaurant in one sentence: style over substance and service with a misleading menu that is overpriced for what you get. Firstly, our waiter sat us right next to the toilets and next too a large group pf rowdy people when we had PREBOOKED. Secondly, this was not a traditional Japanese food but rather westernised Japanese food with assorted Korean dishes. So labelling this restaurant as a "Japanese restaurant" is very misleading, as well the entire menu. I ordered "Chicken Deopbap" and it was described on the menu as "Fried Chicken with vegetables and rice". Oh so it must Korean or Japanese fried chicken and rice with steamed vegetables? WRONG. What is actually was was PAN fried chicken, with courgette, bell peppers and British mushrooms, in a sweet and spicy sauce. Not only this, when my food turned up I politely asked my waiter, "is this definitely what I ordered?", he goes and get a menu and shoves in my face saying "Yeah you ordered the Deopbap right?" and points to it on said shoved menu, and I reply with "yes but I though it had fried chicken?" And as soon as I said the word "yes" he just shrugs me off and strides away, how rude! Luckily the food was still ok in the end even if it was not what I expected, but I wouldn't order it again, especially knowing it was soggy courgette in.

Nice place, food was lovely. There is plenty of selection, lots of seafood from octopus to cod. Little bit pricey, but the service was good.

Cannot fault the food - the flavours, the quality and portion sizes. Service could have been a bit more attentive, but it by no means spoilt the enjoyment of our visit. Just a shame we didn't get to see "Metal Mickey" (the robot waiter) in action, I feel slightly cheated! That said, will definitely again.

I'm not sure if I just came here on a bad night or what, avoid the pork katsu if this is the daily standard. The pork was literally ham thin and had no taste.

I was really excited to be going for my first Japanese meal. Unfortunately i came away feeling disappointed. The mains were brought to our table before we d received all our starters. The food was a little lacklustre and didn t pack as much flavour as hoped. Overall i m afraid I couldn t say I d recommend.

First time I have eaten there and it won't be the last. Friendly staff and a good choice on the menus - spoilt for choice! Food was well presented and tasted very nice - the fish elements were fresh and tasty and the spicy elements were well balanced. Staff were keen and attentive without being overbearing and offered advice / answered our questions very well. All in all, a pleasing dining experience and I look forward to going again.

Fantastic Japanese restaurant in the heart of Ipswich - certainly up there with one of the best that I have been to in the UK! Impressed by everything that we ordered - prawn tempura, cucumber, tuna, and salmon rolls, chicken katsu curry, salmon teriyaki, duck teriyaki, and even the bubble tea. Fast and friendly service, excellent value for money, and a lovely atmosphere, all of which makes this a great place to go as a group with family and friends.

We were a large party of 9 on a busy night so service was very irregular. Some of us were done with our entire dinner before others got their first dish. When the food did arrive though, it was delicious!

My first visit with female friends. Lovely environment, food was excellent as was the service. I was pleasantly surprised when the bill arrived too!
