Very disappointed. The parathas (made by Shana) and chapatis are bought ones from a supermarket. The rice is not basmati. Again, I syspect it is packet rice. There was no difference between the mushroom and vegetable rice. The tarka dhal was flavoured water, I couldn't see any lentils in it. The worst Indian meal I've had.

The breads are extortionately priced, they are out of a packet bought from the supermarket. The curries are obviously frozen and very expensive for what it actually is. The menu is incredibly limited with next to no vegetarian options. The food is also very runny and watered down and the rice isn't basmati. I am VERY DISAPPOINTED!

Was looking for a curry house whilst in Dartmouth. Would not have found this little place had we not have Googled to find somewhere. Entrance was at the beginning of a dodgy alleyway with scaffolding all around. You went up some a stairway into a small foyer with a counter. Looks to be primarily a takeaway, but did have a smallish room for diners that can hold around 50 people. My husband & I arrived at about 7:30pm on a Saturday night. Initially we were the only ones there except a well behaved child occupying a table in the corner which looked to be his regular evening spot. We just had soft drinks as it didn't serve alcohol, though you are welcome to nip to the local Co-op and buy alcohol to consume on the premises, which is what the chap on another table did (the only other occupant whilst we were there). I had onion bajhi which was delicious and a good sized portion, Husband had shish kebab which was a lot spicier than he was expecting but enjoyed it. For mains I had vegetable Korma which was very tasty and a large portion and I'd rate it 10/10, husband had chicken bhuna which he says he'd rate as 6/10. We shared a portion of rice (smallish portion) and a garlic Nan. Nans were on the menu. Got the impression they weren't really able to do them and whilst will almost definitely go back again this week whilst we are staying local I probably wouldn't opt for a Nan again. Definitely should have been busier than they were for a Saturday night but suited us. The decor was not upmarket and if decor is important to you then stay away but if value for money and friendly staff is more important than the surroundings then pop along. I'm looking forward to returning for vegetable korma again this week (not Wednesday as that's the only day they close)

After visiting the web site and seeing the restaurant were once again open for dining and just not takeaways, I arrived for dinner when recently in Dartmouth. The building was clad in scaffolding and undergoing work. The restaurant was not open for business as it should have been. I checked the web site the day before travelling down and no mention they were closed. So, do not be fooled by what their web sites claims. This restaurant is closed until further notice.

I was quite concerned visiting this place having read previous reviews. As I arrived, it was clear they no longer accept dine in customers and therefore operate a take away only service. It wasn't the warmest of welcomes and the reception area would really benefit from being redecorated. Both my Wife and I found the food really tasty. We had no complaints. Whilst it may not have been an outstanding meal, we've had much much worse at many other places around the world. So I would consider coming back for take away again.

We ordered a lamb biryani, chicken tikka pasanda, paratha and popadums and it was all perfect. Highly recommended and already planning when we can try another section of the menu before we leave. A definite 5-star experience. Thank you!

Indian takeaway food varies so much - not just the tastes but the quality too. When you’re visiting a faraway town like Dartmouth as a tourist the trick is to ensure you don’t make a poor choice. Decent is good enough, excellent is a bonus. The Taj Mahal is decent, albeit not an outstanding restaurant for Indian cuisine. Placing the telephone order was simple enough. A pleasant man took the details and everything was present and correct when we opened the bag later. The food was hot when we drove and arrived back to our apartment at Dart Marina. Both the pilau and plain boiled rice was fine, not sticky. We had chicken jalfrezi, chicken tikka balti and a vegetarian dish, chilli madras (I think). Some poppadum, plain naan and a selection of dips (these need to be ordered at a small extra cost). The side dish was Bombay potato. Chicken pieces were nicely sliced, properly cooked and not chewy. There were plenty of green chillies and sliced peppers. It’s good to see that the colours were natural and not the fluorescent shades that some Indian restaurants supply. Well done! The sauces on the main dishes are a little on the runny side and the taste is quite harsh rather than rich, deep or sophisticated. That’s a shame. The dips were really not great and I wouldn’t suggest you bother with them - weak, runny and a bit bland. The price was quite cheap when one considers this is Dartmouth where everything is inflated for the tourists’ wallets. Even by comparison to our home town Indian restaurant, the Taj Mahal in Dartmouth is quite cheap - about 20% less for the equivalent dishes. But in life, as a general rule, you get what you pay for and this holds true here. The Taj Mahal serves decent food - clean, piping hot and satisfactory. It didn’t come close to exceeding our expectations but neither was it disappointing. Just a bit on the bland side (the dishes were spicy but a touch harsh, relying a little too much on the punch of chillies rather than the underlying result of marinading in a sauce for any length of time). If you crave an Indian meal while in Dartmouth then this will suffice and tick the box. If I could give 3.5 stars then I would. It’s better than what feels like a three-star outlet but my four stars does feel a little too generous. As ever with Dartmouth, your experience may feel very different if the town is heaving with hungry tourists. We visited in early-January. Arianne

Our first visit whilst on a delightful week in Dartmouth. If you are a fan of really well cooked Indian food, this is the place. They hold the secret (rarely discovered) of making utterly delicious curry WITHOUT using a gallon of ghee. I was delighted to find that the leftovers (always added to one carton for breakfast (yes, I so am that much of a spice junkie)) weren't sitting in a puddle of oil. So... Healthier than most, upper decile deliciousness, spectacular value for money.

Definately not a murgh makhni what butter chicken is meant to be. Desiccated coconut and sugar, and yellow food colouring, with some red coloured chicken in it. Honestly You are better off getting a microwave meal across the road from coop. And for some reason the chef loves his red food colouring: the keema naan was electric red, my mate looked like he was wearing lipstick, and was all over our hands. We had a good time as lovely company, but wow, did we have to wait for our meals...so very long ! Some of the staff quite abrupt and rude , I would say. We asked for glasses for the sparkling water, several times ! Once meal arrived..food was ok. The starters (soup was lovely) rest, average, that I had anyway. Asking for coffee, the staff looked at each other as though we were bothering them. Well, had they not taken so long to serve the meal , we wouldn't still be there . I didn't check the time, but it must have been between 9.30 - 10.00pm

Live here, been coming for ten years +. Our recent visit there were different staff, the one waited looked completely deranged wandering around talking to himself and doing nothing else. The food ordered was very different to how the same dishes looked last time, and the final bill was 25% higher. Won't be going again. Come back Mo, please.

Very small restaurant, might be best to book. Noisy when full due to small eating area. Staff friendly and efficient. Food good and reasonably priced.
