Tai Tung Chinese Restaurant in Croydon

Goon downhill the service is rubbish and the food is terrible, it’s sad because it was at one time exemplary, we are very disappointed and the APNR cameras are disgusting, why? Will never come back to this place.

Be aware the car park charges! £100 parking fine!!! Waiting an hour for table of 6, have lunch around 90mins then shopping at the supermarket for 30mins. The restaurant should let customers know car park fine will be issued if park at open air car park more than 2 hours, just to say 4 hours free parking at the upper level car park is unclear. Customer always eat then shop (if buying frozen items) it’s not convenient for customer to park at the open air carpark to do their shopping then move their car to indoor upper level car park at the back because I want to eat at the restaurant. Is totally unfair! Is this how you treat your loyal customers.

Not sure if i went to the same place as some of the other bad reviewers!!!! Went for lunch today Great food and loads of it.....Took the excess home as there was loads. Lovely helpful staff.....explained everything to us and helped us order. Lots of choice! Would recommend and will go again soon

Super rude staff. My 3yo was using the pen they give for order to draw on the paper napkin. We get if they dont want kids to use their pen - they could have just told us. The rude lady waiter just snatched it from my dd and told me off this is not for her, its for you to order’ This made my daughter cry there. And when we spoke to the manager and told him that we would like us to be told you rules and that we do not expect our daughter to be treated like this, he offered if we want we could leave. We just left, never to come back to such a rude place. The food might be good - for all we care. But will never step into a place where people do mot have basic human value and maturity to behave with a kid! A big fat NO to this place. There are much better dimsum places around - will go there anytime. Not this place!

Terrible dim sum! I was there with my wife & 2 adult children. Our 3 steamed tofu skin rolls were dark brown—a sure sign that they were leftovers from the previous day. I asked them to take the dish away and give us fresh rolls. The dish came back with 2 fresh rolls—good BUT 1 dark leftover roll—OUTRAGEOUS! I didn't have the energy to return it again. My family just ate the food, paid up, and vowed never to return. The restaurant is busy because hundreds of local immigrants have recently arrived from Hong Kong through the British government's BNO scheme. These folk really miss their dim sum and put up with the crap Tai Tung serves up because they have no other choice—poor souls. But the place being packed with Chinese DOES NOT reflect the quality of the food. So don’t be fooled! Furthermore, we had queued for a table and the service was slow. As a result, my car was parked for more than 2 hours in the Wing Yip carpark, the carpark management company UKPS (who are modern highwaymen) charged me £100! Beware of this SCAM!!!

Absolutely appalling experience due to the manager Leong. We arrived after lunch at around 2.30pm there were many tables and we had my mother in a wheelchair so we’re looking for a bit of space. We were told we couldn’t have the window table as we were only 3 people and the table was for 6 however there were many other large tables and the restaurant wasn’t busy. We had driven an hour to get to the restaurant and because i questioned Leong he told me to go and stand outside and wait for a table. His attitude was rude and disrespectful and so we left. We’ve been going for many years and will no longer go there because of his rudeness.

Absolutely Poor service. Very rude! No politeness at all. They just dump on the table and left. Do not waste your time and money in there.

Unfortunately due to the incredibly arrogant and condescending attitude and rudeness of the staff, I will not be returning to this restaurant. The atmosphere was overall unwelcoming and the waiting staff abrupt in their manners. Towards the end of our meal, a waitress charged over and started clearing the table while we were clearly still eating, without asking for permission first. When I challenged her on this, she responded that this was their practice. She only stopped after I explicitly asked her to, with no apologies. This is clearly an ingrained culture at this establishment, as when I fed this back to the manager he was dismissive and failed to engage. I am unsurprised to see other similar reviews here, as I have had poor experiences at this restaurant previously too. I think this visit will be my last.

Very Sad the Dim Sum experience has gone down alot. Everything we had today was so disappointing. We will not going back. The quality of the food has decreased and does not taste very nice.

It was the first time I have been to this restaurant and I felt compelled to leave a review so that others will not make the mistake of going there. The service is rude to the customer and all waiters avoid eye contact and do not like to serve. I have no idea how this business survives when the service is so bad. The food is nothing special either…The decor snd surroundings are also falling apart but I must stress that the absolute worst thing is definatéy the rude people that work there..

We had a very bad experience yesterday. I took my family there for dinner and they treated us like we offended them. Was rude, unhelpful and I nearly wanted to walk out. They pretty much treated us like unwanted customers. I’m a little surprised as we are semi regulars. I always used to give a tip on top of their service charge. But I don’t think I’ll be going there again for a while. Quite disappointed. And advice for the management, I know you are busy and have a lot of customers, but it doesn’t give you the right to treat your customers in such horrible manner.

My friends and I visited the restaurant for dinner, which turned to be an incredibly bad idea. The quality of food was well below average and the staff exhibited poor manners when it comes to addressing simple inquiries about their food and their lack of customer service is simply disgraceful. Hence why, for the first time, we made the decision not to pay the service charge, as it was undeserved. Shockingly, they directly insisted on its payment mentioning that it contributes to their salary and rather than seeking for a contractive feedback or understanding our concerns, the waiter rudely slammed the bill on the table and aggressively crossed out the service charge amount. In addition, she then suggested to only order takeaway in future....... but rest assured, there won't be a next time. As we were leaving, they escorted us out using offensive language, raised their voices, and displayed disrespectful facial expressions. Frankly, I'm perplexed as to how they continue to operate their business in this manner allowing waiters to have such careless behaviours. Never again!!!

Arrived there before 9pm got told I could not get à table or take away when the restaurant shots at 22pm. The staff were really rude and did not accomodate us within their opening times. We travelled from far to get there so if they are closing early they should publish this on their website.

We Was seated very fast, very nicely decorated upon entry, I have visited this restaurant twice with my Cantonese boyfriend and his family driving an hour to eat here. Well presented food that tastes very nice, a lot of variety on the menu, enjoyed nice tea here and got to try chicken feet. Would definitely recommend

The greeting waiter and ordering waitress were not very polite, bordering on rude. Food was served promptly at 7pm Saturday, day after Good Friday. Food rating is as follows: Cantonese duck 4/5, Char Sui (Roast Pork) 0/5, Sui Yuk (crispy roast pork) 2/5 very fatty, salty baked chicken 2/5, mixed meat hot pot 4/5, brisket beef hot pot 3/5, crispy seafood noodle 4/5, Beef hot plate 4/5, salted king prawns 4/5, Beef black bean & green pepper 4/5. Upstairs can accommodate larger parties. As there were 15 of us travelling from different parts on south England and we needed disabled access plus car park, we defaulted to this restaurant, otherwise we would probably have been better off going elsewhere. I personally would not return.

Been going to this resturant for years. Food was mostly of a reasonable quality and standard for dim sum dishes. Tried a few times for dinner but always disappointing so we only go for dim sum . The services had always been indifferent and closed to rude as there is the only authentic dim sum resturant in Croydon area. So there is no incentive for the owners to improve both quality of food and service. Since it reopen after covid it was obvious to us and confirmed by one of the waiters that kitchen staff has changed and the dim sum dishes are now of very poor quality The noodle dishes are tasteless and watery. Prices has also greatly inflated relative to inflation. Sad to see this resturant we had been going since it opened had gone downhill so much.

We are foodies and when we moved away from the Tai Tung area we used to travel the 50 miles round trip for its wonderful Chinese food for a treat - as it was only comparable to Hong Kong restaurants or some in Soho - but never again ..... We were surprised to read the negative comments before we went for a celebratory meal with friends last night but remembered such good food in the past that we made the journey anyway . How the place has changed ( we hadn't been for about a year ) . The food was the worst Chinese food we have ever had ! We had 9 dishes and they were all bad. The noodle dishes tasted strange as though they had been cooked in old oil - the pork in the sweet and sour was tough and chewy, the pork in the noodle dish was grey and looked as though it had been hanging around a long time , the pork with sea spicy aubergine was bland and tasteless as were the prawn dishes and the fried rice was soggy ... there was not one dish that was appetising at all . A wasted journey and wasted money . Needless to say we will not be returning - which is a great shame as it was prior to this visit my husbands favourite restaurant !!!!!

Today I visited the restuarant following a day out with my daughter, we were both in need of a quick snack.. We ordered the vegetarian spring rolls, Vietnamese sping rolls & the deep fried prawns. I kid you not, for the Vietnamese spring rolls what we received were 3 sausages wrapped in filo pastry. Yes ! Sausages in filo pastry. We are still baffeld ?! The "vegetarian spring rolls" were foul, literally. They smelt so very bad, infact distressing. We could not eat them. The contents were stale semi cooked limp cabbage and rancid black seaweed, not much else. We had heard so many compliments about the food there, but this goes without saying, they have lost our custom forever ! We recommend you check the contents of your order before you leave the store or you may be in for an unappetising surprise. A total waste of money served by and wholly unethical business practice. The food is mediocre, I’ve had better. Try and avoid Sundays as it can get extremely busy and could be waiting for approx 45mins for a table in the freezing foyer area. The dim sum are average and a bit over priced. The hot pots are nice but it comes with a hefty price tag of £17! We probably wouldn’t come here if there was somewhere else you can get dim sum. Positives - service once seated is relatively quick, staff are attentive and there is plenty of parking on site

For my husband's birthday he wanted to eat at Tai Tung, l love the authentic chinese food but hate the service, abrupt, surly, rude staff. As this was his choice, l went along expecting all of the above, on the contrary, we had the best waitress, she explained that we would have to wait 20mins for our meal due to it being the eve of Chinese new year and both floors were full. Our meals arrived albeit haphazard - starters for four people came separately so we didn't eat our starters or mains at the same time - rice came before meats and fish, therefore rice went cold. Food was good maybe if they weren't so busy, everything would've been perfect.

We went to shop in the Chinese supermarket and decided to have lunch in this restaurant. We had noodles with prawns, one with chicken and seasonal vegetables (pak choi) with oister sauce. The food was ok.I asked the waitress to make sure in my food there wasn't any garlic as I have a really bad intolerance which sometimes turns into allergy.After we had Pak choi we realised the at the bottom of the plate there was chopped garlic.I have complained but nothing was done, not even an apology.

Traditional Chinese food at the highest level of quality and standards, great choice of dishes, portions are large, very busy restaurant, need to book or have a wait if you just turn up, eat in or take away, highly recommend for those who appreciate true traditional Chinese food.

The biggest issue with Tai Tung is service they can be a bit brash. They don’t mean bad but just come across like that. But food is fantastic. Dim sum and hot pots are amazing. Probably the best Chinese food I have had in UK.

I went for dinner with 2 professional colleagues from Oxford,but from the beginning to the end, the experience left a bitter taste in our mouths!The staff were abrupt in their responses, overtly unfriendly & placed 2 used cutlery from a bunch in the middle of our table on my friend's clean plate for her next meal!!!!

You can tell a Chinese restaurant is authentic when the majority of the diners are Chinese; which was the case here.The food was served very promptly despite the large number of diners. The choice is bewildering large; so I usually stick to my favourites.

Disgusting behaviour from Manager and staff at Tai Tung restaurant next to Win Yip Purley Way . Mum and Dad went there for lunch and dad had a fit (and fell to the floor and blood was coming out his mouth as he bit his tongue (he has never had a fit). My 84 year old mum was crying and didn’t know what to do. A Dr was eating there and came over and called an ambulance. I arrived in a state before ambulance had arrived but the motorbike medic was there and two nice ladies who were dining sat with us. I saw the waitress and manager tapping my mother with the bill asking her to get his wallet out his pocket! We had been told not to touch him as he was still slightly fitting. They had also put two extra drinks on the bill that were placed on table on top of bill that they must have ordered for end of meal. They then gave bill to ME which was £55 and I said can you wait until we have got dad in ambulance ! He is at mayday just being accessed and is conscious in A&E; with Mum. I will keep you updated and when I go back to collect his car I will ensure that Everyone in the restaurant hears about their disgusting greedy behaviour !

I have been a regular diner since 1975. If you are seeking good and honest Chinese food, you will be pleased. Order a dish featured on the mirror behind the counter. Or better yet, ask Harry, he who is standing behind the counter, what is good today. You will be glad you did.

The roast duck (portions of duck, not the crispy aromatic duck) was absolutely amazing, amongst the best I have ever eaten. The Barbeque Pork (Char Siu) was not so great. Crispy noodles were delicious.

We arrived before the big crowd. I entered the restaurant first to see if there is a table whilst the rest of the group is parking the car. There was no one at the door to greeting customers or giving out tickets so I waited. Then this older man with a pair of black frame glasses passed by and asked:”What’s up?” (In Cantonese). Certainly not the right attitude to work in a restaurant. I then said please can I have a table for 4 people. He threw a word: “Upstairs” then disappeared. Leaving me standing there like a fool. I had no clue what to do next. After around 1 minute he returned I talked to him again as I said I saw people on one table just leaving so I asked if we can have that table instead. He tsaid yes but you have to wait for the table to be cleaned which was fine by me. So I was waiting at the table for another female staff to clean the table. Then this man turned up and asked me to wait at the door not by the table in a very rude manner. To avoid the argument I returned to the door. While I was waiting, other two groups of customers came in and asked for tables. This man pointed the table they have just cleaned. So I asked him if he gave our table to other customer. This man immediately jumped up furiously and shouted:”Do you want to argue with me??? If this is what you want, leave the restaurant because we are so busy!” I’ve never been so threatened in a restaurant before. He must hate his job so much to treat the customers like that. Come on! It’s 2019, how can a service business hire someone so unprofessional and mental to serve customers??? I guess the owner doesn’t care as they are always busy. We have been eating here many times but no more!!!

If you go to Tai Tung on a Sunday lunchtime for dim sum make sure you are there before midday as it becomes very busy (VERY BUSY). As I do not live nearby I tend to go early and this was not my first visit( and it will not be my last) have had dim sum from many restaurants in quite a few countries and this dim sum is up with the best. In a crowded place service was not slow chinese tea pots regularly refilled empty dim sum dishes cleared promptly. Very family friendly .Definitely a place to visit!

Friday night family dinner. We remember well our wonderful sundays at Din Tai Fung and Yum Cha in Singapore - so this was a good reminder.

Went today at lunch time. Had both prawn and roast pork ho fung both of which were totally tasteless. Also ordered fried noodles with barbecued pork. The noodles were dry with hardly any pork in it. Had to put soy sauce on it to make it edible. Should have sent the whole lot back.

An unpromising location off the A23 in Croydon hides a real jem. I used to drive by the kitch Chinese arch every day until a colleague who had lived in Hong Kong for 7 years told me this place did the best dim sum she had eaten outside Hong Kong. She was right, and I’ve been going back regularly for 20 years. This is no frills. No booking. No time wasting. Brisk/brusque and efficient service and great authentic and affordable food. Turn up early at weekends to avoid waiting. In 20+ years as a customer I have enjoyed every meal and never had cause to complain about anything. I am excited to take friends and family there whenever we have people to stay. Long may it remain exactly as it is. If you want fancy menus and gorgeous decor and gracious and lingering service then this is NOT for you. If you love simple, honest and authentic dim sum and you want to get stuck and and enjoy the food with a group of family or friends then you’ll struggle to find somewhere better.

Regularly visit with my family as we live locally and food is generally good but you need to tolerate the rudest, most arrogant staff in this place. Usually one of the miserable female owners hands a raffle ticket with you place in the queue for tables at the door and the waiting staff do their best to make you feel utterly unwelcome with their emotionless, rude service style. Bill is unitemised and in Chinese so impossible to check (surely this is against the law?!?) and you are expected to eat, pay and go. Enjoying the dining experience is forbidden and the staff rudeness will usually ensure this is enforced. Lord knows why they charge 10% service for treating customers with contempt! There are many other restaurants with friendlier staff and a nicer atmosphere and eventually the owners will realise that customers will only tolerate so much rudeness for a plate of (expensive) food.

I come here every so often, probably once every 6 to 8 weeks. I invariably order the same 4 dishes which I like. And today was the same.

Great good value chinese restaurant at the Wing Yip complex.Not really a couples dining place but best to go with a group to experience the variety of food on offer.Hand written bill makes it impossible to check your bill but seemed a bout right to me and the only reason I didn't give it 5 stars

.....from any of the staff of this enormous Chinese restaurant - probably 300 covers over the two floors. The staff must have completed 'inscrutable training' and probably get fined if they show emotion of any kind. They keep moving and customers are not encouraged to linger as there is usually a queue at the door with chapsticks at the ready! Tables of various sizes fro 2 to 12 seaters are packed in.

As per your normal Chinese restaurant, drinks available, and good selection of food. served our group of 5 very quickly. No complaints from anyone as food was of a good standard. Would recommend.

Dim sum tastes good, not that different from authentic Chinese dim sum and similar taste to the good ones in Chinatown. Car park is convenient, also just next to a Chinese supermarket, nice location.

In June 2019, on a Monday just after 11am, the place was already one third occupied. There is a perpetual thriving week-day , leisured set of diners not in the thrall to office employment from oversea students, private business folk to toddlers and silver seniors. I overheard a mother bragging about school fees and robot tended lawns.

I go here about once every 4 to 6 weeks. The food is consistently good and the service relatively friendly.
