Tai Tong in East Hampshire

Cannot believe this but orderd for first time here after 30 years never being served tinned spam in fried rice. When questioned the lady laughed and couldnt answer why that 2a she case but admitted it was tinned ham. Chicken balls still pink in the middle and batter mushy. The meal for 5 was stated bad it was returned after one mouthful each.

Lovely restaurant in the centre with Petersfield. The staff were very friendly. We were greeted as soon as we entered the restaurant. The menu is very extensive. We just opted for a few noodle dishes. We did not have to wait long for our food. The food is served in the traditional foil take away containers but they use a plastic transparent lid which is a great idea as you can see what each dish is. The food tasted very nice and the pricing is reasonable. This is a very nice restaurant. We would definitely visit again to eat in or take away next time we are in the area. Highly recommended.

Although it's a very basic restaurant the food certainly isn't. Lovely salt and Pepper squid, Shezwan Chicken, Crispy Beef - all excellent. Great service.

A group of 18 booked to eat here. The food was excellent with a good choice of drinks. Given the number of us, the service was good and nobody had to wait too long for their food. Quality and quantity pretty good across the board. I know this place has been here since the 1960’s (different owners now!) and I see it staying here forever…

Another delicious takeaway from the New Tai Tong, Petersfield. Excellent Beijing style sweet and sour chicken with Young-Chow fried rice, roast duck with pineapple and sweet picked ginger and a chicken and sweetcorn soup. Looking forward to the next time!

My wife and I went there last night, the first time we had been there, having normally got take aways from Hong Kong house. The food was fantastic, one of the best I've ever had! The restaurant was clean and the staff very attentive. I would highly recommend this restaurant to anyone wanting a very decent meal.

Absolutely lovely staff :) food was delicious. Duck pancakes were had yummmmm :) Great delivery service . We popped into this restaurant today for the first time, what a treat.We had the set lunch time menu 3 courses for £10 pp & we really enjoyed our meal.The lady who served us was lovely & even allowed my husband to give me the red rose on the table, we will be back, thank-you so much.

One of the best Chinese restaurants really. No messing around, also Sunday buffet is the best buffet you can get for this type of food.

Food was an hour late. Cold, extremely bland and tasteless. Been living in the town 5 years and never until today have not gone to HONG KONG HOUSE. Only tried Tai Tong from a referral. How wrong was that referral was. Absolute waste of money. Bad service. Bad food. Bad prices. HONG KONG HOUSE is so far above Tai Tong its scary, sorry but you've got a lot to learn about cooking good food. 100% will never use again. Worst food I've had in a long time.

Ordered food this evening, told 30-40 minutes…..2 hours later and several calls later Sadly no food. Delivery driver was not contactable and no offer of discount or sorry. When asked about discount only £10 offered to be deducted? Very poor service from Tai Tong. It will be a very long time, if at all if we order from you again.

Great Chinease. Called ahead to book a table. Parking right outside. Friendly welcome. Time was tight as I was heading back from a conference and had to get a ferry from Portsmouth. Order taken swiftly, drink delivered timely and food followed with little delay. Great food, well cooked. Plates were hot (always a nice touch). Now in my goto list when in the area.

ordered salt and pepper chicken,the chicken was extremely dry and tasteless, one of the waitress was so rude and kept interrupting,I can't even finish a whole sentence without her talk back, what a terrible service, thanks to the other waitress who wear glasses, at least she actually listen and gave solutions. won't come back again.

It may not be the smartest but we have been coming here since I was a child 30 years plus) and it’s the best Chinese food I know. Great staff. Just have to see how many people pop in for a takeaway while you are eating to know it’s a much valued community asset. I went to this restaurant with my friends and there was this one lady staff who was extremely rude to us. She wasn’t paying attention while we were raising some concerns about the food we had. The food was so pale and wasn’t even cooked properly, the rice is always under cooked.

There is one staff member who is very rude. While raising a concern about the food we were eating, she was completely ignorant of what I was telling her and was acting as if she didn’t hear anything. It isn’t the first time she has been rude. The restaurant is going to lose its regular customers because of this lady. And the food there is getting worse each time I eat there; it has no flavour and is very bland.

We have been a customer of this chinese restaurant for over 3 years. Dined in and ordered takeaways for many times. Unfortunately the restaurant hired a new young employee who completely does not fit in, does not grasp what customer service is and speaks rudely to the customers. We ordered for a pick up twice within last week, and that lady was very rude on the phone. When I finally challanged that with a manager in person, this employee - in front of her manager - first suggested that I find out who was taking the order myself (denying it was her) - then a minute later admitted it was her and started arguing with me and called me a liar saying that she never said things I heard myself she had said to my wife on the phone (loudspeaker). The manager seemed to be not interested in resolving this, so they are most likely loosing a customer. Still don't understand why an emloyee is allowed to have tantrums towards a regular and politely ordering and paying customer, but I don't thing I am gonna be able to find out. I don't know what happened to the previous polite members of staff, but don't want to order there again. Extremely disappointed.

Warm and friendly welcome, nice and quiet early in the evening, good food, well cooked, nicely presented and exceptionally tasty. The hot and sour soup is in my best 5 of all time. On and off, I have been coming here for about 40 years or so, and the management might change, the people might change, the food never does, it is consistantly good, and that what keeps me returning.

I first went to this restaurant some twenty five years ago then owned by Mr. KEN .Whp was a great character and ran a tight ship. Moved away from the area and just returned . Having read mixed reviews of the new ownership I thought we would give it a try . It was a great surprise that the food and service was excellent and could not be faulted So much so we have returned three more times and the standard was the same . The only criticism I would make is that the 1970s booths remain and does look a little old fashion . It is spotless and clean . Keep it up

Brilliant ‘All You Can Eat’ lunch, I’ve eaten here on and off since I was a little girl… haven’t been since pre-covid, but still as tasty as ever!! Price is reasonable for lunch and dinner - depending on how much you can eat, very much depends on whether this option is better for you in terms of price. They make THE BEST Hong Kong Style Sweet and Sour chicken in a 20+ mile radius, I promise!! I have given Tai Tong a 5* rating, but I would rate a strong 4.5* because I think the price of soft drinks is very high… £2.80 for half a pint and £3.80 for a pint of lemonade/cola etc 😳🫣 Staff are very attentive and will always happily tip - a big thumbs up all round

Great food, favorite dish I've had so far is probably their Green Thai Chicken Curry- they cut the vegetables into shapes like butterflies and flowers which is a nice touch (on top of being delicious of course) Have been here countless times and they've never failed to meet my expectations

Some say the decor dated , we said the same but really to us it added to happy memories for my wife & I. It was reminiscent of our first experience of dining Chinese in the early restaurants of the 1960's. Looking at the lunch menu in the window attracted us. Virtually the same short options we first ventured to try, 50 plus years ago & the price pro rata to the value of the day. We had to try it & were not disappointed.. Covid safe with friendly service. It is also many years since we moved from Hampshire & we last visited Petersfield. Worth going back for lovely stallholders in market & a nice lunch at Tai Tong

Quite possibly the worst experience I’ve ever had eating out. Tried to enjoy a meal with my family whilst 10 people at a time were queuing up a metre away from us to collect their takeaway, watching you eat like animals in a zoo. Badly set up, poor service and even worse food. Left after our starters and will never return there again. Don’t waste your time or money!

Service and food were exceptional. Mixed starter was amazing, Singapore chow mein was one of the best I have ever had anywhere including Singapore. Couldn't fault the beef with ginger and spring onion...so fresh and authentic. We will certainly be back again.

This is the best Chinese restaurant in East Hants. Tasty, good value for money food. Staff are friendly and the portion sizes are huge. We will be back!

Be warned that they are very much NOT trying to help the economy and local residents by participating in the ‘eat out to help out’ scheme. They are making no effort to make this clear. The reason given when we asked - ‘well we don’t open on Mondays so why bother just for Tuesday and Wednesday’. Why bother? How about to help out the loyal, tax paying residents of Petersfield. Everyone else is. An absolute disgrace. Have to wonder whether they are charging full price then claiming back from the government.

Excellent takeaway from a long-standing restaurant in Petersfield. Great service and so quick. Of all the takeaways we have had over ‘lockdown’, this was certainly the hottest.

We first visited the Tai Tong in August 2018 just after moving to Petersfield. While an "OK" meal we were very critical of the very high soft drinks prices and the appalling Food Standards Agency Hygiene Rating at only 2. Seeing that the Hygiene Rating after an inspection in August 2019 is now a 5, the top mark, we decided to try again. An adequately warm and efficient welcome, order taking and service. There are paper napkins and a paper tablecloth; that's not unusual but contrasts with linen ones at the Spice Lounge just round the corner in The Square where we had eaten earlier that week - it sets a very different ambience. The meal can best be described as bland and lacking in flavour; no outstanding taste and a boring presentation. An extensive menu, also on-line which is good. Food prices much as other Chinese restaurants. BUT soft drinks prices remain outrageously high; £2.50 for a small lime and soda which is 40p at Wetherspoons at the other end of the High Street. We commented on that last time and there is no change. Again as last time there were no metal hot plates to keep the food hot. This time we asked and were given two of the night-light heaters - good - but they should be there as standard. When we left there were no diners in the restaurant of some 60 covers - that's bad for a Saturday evening at around 8.15. No-one bothered to ask if we had enjoyed our meal or if "everything was alright?" They have a steady take away trade. Of the last 10 TA reviews since May 2019 only three were 4 or 5 star. Of the 119 reviews since December 2011 there are NONE with any response from the Management. This is a restaurant where the management just don't care any longer so no surprise that it is rated on TA as only number 32 of the 51 restaurants in Petersfield. So, overall, this is a tired and boring restuarant with no outstanding features to recommend it; decor, ambience, service or food. Management is clearly complacent and uncaring. This could all be so different with a bit of love and enthusiasm. It's not a no-go but certainly not on our 'preferred and recommend' list.

Ordered a curry, waited in line to collect it, all customers in the line waiting for curries ignored, asked to give my name to advise I had arrived to collect and was told sorry I am busy wait in the line please? 30 mins after agreed collection time, still no one serving the takeaway queue. There's plenty of other places selling takeaways in Petersfield. Save yourself the trouble and go to one that actually allow you to complete the transaction.

Tastes great but the place looks a bit dated.

My husband and I are here last week, we used to eat here a few years ago, we both thought it wasn't as good as before, portion size was small, the food tasted ok but lacked something.

Couldnt believe the cheap price of the 3 course lunch menu, soooooo cheap! I wasnt expecting a great meal but my soup, Singapore noodles and banana fritter was very tasty. The drink prices were very reasonable for tea and coffee too.

Usually have a take away from here at least a couple of times a month ,have never had a bad meal ,we have been using this for about 18 months since moving south from Lincolnshire,it’s consistent and staff are very pleasant .....prices are reasonable....mmmm making me feel hungry 😋

Very bland food, vegetable spring rolls were in serious need of some vegetables. Couldn't really tell the difference between the satay and the black bean sauce dishes! Just disappointing.

A visit to any restaurant should be an experience to savour. All aspects of my visit hugely disappointed and won’t be repeated. Appalling service from the young man who served me. No welcome and was made to feel rushed in choosing my meal. The King Prawn Thai Green curry was lacking in taste and flavour. The vegetables poorly cooked and the Prawns has clearly just been defrosted and put into a microwave to warm up and then added to the curry!

Had takeaway from here this evening and one of the worst we’ve ever had. Dry, bland and generally poor overpriced food.

Great for a Chinese takeaway, Even after 40 years

Have been many times to the Tai Tong and yes it has changed since Ken was there, but the food and quality of service is still good. We found the staff polite and attentive and would certainly recommend.

Having read the previous reviews of this restaurant I’m surprised that the customers put up with such rubbish food! We ate here last night and have never had such bad food. People who think this is good have never eaten a proper Chinese meal. To begin, the greeting was to say the least lukewarm. We were given a menu but not asked if we would like a drink ...that was finally done as an afterthought when the young man came to take the order. Soup.. chicken noodle, great lumps of tasteless chicken in what could only be described as good water knocked stupid! Noodles not cooked properly, chewy! Husbands soup had dumplings in the same watery type pool. Main course, chicken chow mien, more great lumps of very dry again tasteless chicken and more noodles, cooked better this time but no real taste. Husband had scallops, plentiful but again no real flavour to the sauce. These were all served with barely a smile and no attempt at friendly communication of any kind. Drinks....diet cola...flat, wine was seemingly passable! We gave up after that! Have never been at this restaurant before and thankfully will NEVER have to eat here again. If I were local I would seriously give up eating from this place! Also usually prawn crackers are offered on arrival at most Chinese restaurants.....NOT THIS ONE! We did not leave a tip as we did not consider the service or food merited one!

Over a year ago visited here and wouldn't come back,food very indifferent and rather tasteless.Service not good

We decided to come for my husbands birthday. It was a Friday night so I expected it to be quite busy. However the place was practically empty with no atmosphere. The waiting staff did not engage with us in any way and we waited along time to even be offered drinks.The food was ok but there was no effort put into presentation. Everything on each of our plates was beige/brown. Even a little parsley or a tiny bit of salad would have made it better No one came to check on our food or to see if we wanted any more drinks.I would never go there to eat again but I would have a takeaway as the food is acceptable ( nothing special, but easier than making it yourself)

When we are in petersfield we always go for lunch,but won't go in if the tall man with glasses is serving.He needs to get a personality bypass.The ladies are absolutely fine.He is morose and makes you feel you shouldn't be there,if you're that unhappy get another job.
