Superb food, great atmosphere and good service

It's been over a year since I last visited Tai Pan, reason being that they raised their prices to a level of stupidity. My girls are always crying for Tai Pan food that I decided to allow them to get a takeaway and now not only is it expensive, but the quality of food has even turned my young girls away. Crispy duck.... Coated and soaked in oil that all the "crispy" bits had to be thrown away. Not enough sauce, not enough cucumber and spring onion. Plain fried noodles... It's not like it was before. Absolutely no seasoning and it looked like they gave remnants from another meal as all the noodles were small pieces Egg Fried rice... Good Crispy asparagus with chilli... Very sweet. Not spicy Chicken in black bean sauce... Overcooked chicken but decent like always. The biggest downside is the pricing. I called to place my order using the takeaway menu from just over a year ago and there is a MASSIVE price hike. £7 for plain noodles that I could have got for 50p given the poor quality. Half crispy duck was £27 last year and now £33 But the biggest kick up the back side was the chicken in black bean sauce!!! Last year it was a reasonable £12.50, and today's price is £16.90. I understand price increases, but not at this level. This is just a price hike because they are based in Northwood and they know that there will always be dumb patrons like myself that will go!

Can tell how good a restaurant is when it’s packed on a Monday night! Excellent food, good service, definitely visit again :)

Really enjoyed the food here although quite expensive

I have been wanting to go Taipan in Northwood for a while now, and finally had the time to go with family. The restaurant wasn't overly busy when we arrived and we were given a table, before getting given the menus. We were being sternly, (not politely), asked if we wanted to order drinks and said to the staff give us a few minutes to look at the drinks menu before we ordered. The waiter just walked away.. We then ordered and the drinks arrived and then asked if we have ordered our starters, again asked them to give us a few minutes… the look on the staff… you can tell he was not happy!! We ordered the starters and they came and although we tried to make space there wasn’t a lot, and the waiter just squashed everything together with no courtesy, which I thought was wrong. Starters went down well and the staff just seemed to be hovering around us like bees and waiting to take dishes away, as we finished the starters and dishes got wiped away very promptly, and then the staff staff said have you ordered mains… again said give us a few minutes. The mains was ordered and food arrived, and again there was that hovering around us … as if to say hurry up!!! We finished our main dinner.. and another lady came over took the empty dishes and without any warning started folding the top layer of the table cloth, so the other new one which was the second layer could sit on the table… I found this very rude and there was no politeness from the staff at all, even our drinks which were on the table we had to be move by us while she deals with her precious cloth!!! There was nothing said from her… not even an apology but seemed to make a face, only to practically throw the cutlery back on the table. We then had to wait ages for someone’s attention to order the bill… at this point they forgot about us. I then had to go to the front where the lady came running up with her machine and said you want to pay the bill… Checked the bill and paid it!! Overall, the experience left a really bad taste, and as such, we certainly won't be returning, not until the whole staff attitude changes and customer service too. Very disappointing overall!!

We've visited several times over a number of years and food and service have been 'acceptable', (which is why we've gone back), but after last week's episode I really don't think we'll be visiting again. The restaurant wasn't overly busy when we arrived and we were given a table, but before we'd even sat down we were being sternly, (not politely), asked to order drinks. We then ordered and waited for ages before starters even arrived, only to find that hot dishes were only luke warm. We mentioned this to our waiter, who, instead of apologising, made a face like thunder and angrily removed the dishes, only to practically throw them back down when they returned, with us suspecting that a microwave had been involved, as spring rolls were now totally 'limp'. A main chicken dish was 'rubbery' and again, only luke warm, so we mentioned this and yet again, the face appeared, with the waiter making us feel guilty for having said anything, after all, how dare we not accept overcooked cold food, we're just the customers. I'm sorry to say that service went downhill from there, with our waiter constantly asking for us to order drinks, (three, or four times is far too often to be deemed polite) and being totally unpleasant at every opportunity. The crowning glory was when we asked for the service charge to be removed from the bill, with one having thought that an earthquake had erupted. The waiter's face turned ashen and the manager came over, insisting that we paid the SC, or we'd be thrown out and couldn't return. Not wanting to provide CC details, we gathered sufficient cash between us to cover the bill, (minus service) and left the payment, all the while being spoken to disgracefully by the staff and made to feel really quite awkward and inadequate. Don't they realise that politeness counts in a service industry. I'm not sure whether the restaurant fails to pay their staff and they rely solely on tips for an income, or whether they're just rude and arrogant by nature, but the experience left a really bad taste, (pardon the pun) and as such, we certainly won't be returning, not until ownership and staff change, together with their attitude towards customers.

Then 2 weeks back I went for a take away for my son. And I felt so hungry, I got tempted into sitting and having a bite to eat and when I asked if I could sit The same lady said no in a cheeky horrid tone. Threatening that I was not allowed. So we went in today wen it was quieter And when we got a table, My son and I I was on my way to the washroom Before sitting down and she screamed at me in the corridor and told me if I won’t pay the service charge she would throw me out of the restaurant. We are not obligated to pay service charges even of the food and service was good. How can I contact the food authorities in this country and how do I take this matter fwd I might contact the council And then the police I was so hungry that I promised to pay the service charge We travel from far away to eat here. But get treated badly It’s so difficult to get a smile from them too And if they do It’s very fake They just simply hate human beings Karma will get these people They mite close down with this sort of behaviour

Lovely atmosphere and great food with very friendly staff. Great service from Mandy.... Have a large vegetarian selection too. Would definitely visiting again.

There are a quite few Chinese restaurants in northwest london,Taipan in northwood consider one of the best. The taste is more towards shichun and Cantonese styles.

Gorgeous environment, the food was amazing and i loved it, 10/10 will come back soon with friends for sure. The staff were patient and helpful!! I will totally recommend it here.

Had gone to celebrate a birthday. Had a very loud group sited next to us, which spoiled the evening. Had steam vegetables dumplings, hot sour soup, vegetable rolls, black curd balls, crispy asparagus, mock chicken, vegetable string noodles, baby corn, brocoli and garlic fried rice. The food and the service were excellent. Will definitely visit again on a quiet day.

Had to change to 1 star as woken up with really bad throat - can only blame the quality of the oil used in their food . The food and quality of ingredients is at best pitiable. Vegetarian stir fry had 2 measles pieces of carrots. Singapore noodles was seriously underwhelming - no bean sprouts, nothing to make you feel in a happy place. Tofu coated in egg was not good at all Sorry, though far away, Zen Buddha is far better and to learn from. Not for us anymore

Took family out for my birthday and had a superb meal at Tai Pan.

We used to frequent this restaurant very often when our girls were studying at the local school, those days were treated better. Last night we were a group of 5 and everyone on the table felt we were being rushed at every chance. Plates were being cleared off the table before everyone was finished. We are given 2 hours on the table so why can’t the staff allow us the 2 hours ? Or simply inform us that we only have 90 minutes so that we can decided for ourselves if we want a rushed meal or not. 3 Veggie rolls for £4.95?

Average experience when it came to the food & drink, service was at times ok , however when it came to the bill ( £125 for 2 female adults & a 10 year old ) , we were not at all happy to pay the service charge & asked for it to be removed, well all hell let loose from several so called friendly waiting staff Told it was a mandatory charge when in fact it was not a true statement & was then told next time come get a takeout They did in the end take it off but if they hadn’t, it would not have got rude arrogance at its best trying to intimidate 2 woman into paying what should be a gratuity for good service. We will NOT of course be returning Prepare to be ripped off if you insist on going to this place 😒

We came here as a family to celebrate my sisters 60th. Had been here many years ago and over the years had heard good things about Taipan so was expecting great food. Unfortunately we all were unimpressed with the food as found it very oily and tastless. A few family members who have been coming to Taipan, didn't enjoy the food either. We orders an array of dishes like salt and pepper sweetcorn and broccoli, spring rolls, mock duck pancakes, lettuce wrap, chicken wings, crab and prawn starters. Chicken cashew curry. As there were 13 of us, we were given a private area at the end of the restaurant. We were thoroughly disappointed with the service too as every time we tried to get hold of the staff for something they would either ignore, or say they are too busy. My sister order some ice for her drink, and she waited more than 15minutes, while the other table in our area kept on getting ice and when we tried to get the staff's attention about this they would ignore us. It was a hugely disappointing evening out overall with food and service. And it was cheap either as we paid £35 with the service charge, of course!

Underwhelming experience … food lacked flavour - poor quality of ingredients. Only good dish was the aromatic duck. Disappointing…

The staff were extremely kind and helpful to my very disabled sister. The food was unbelievably delicious and we were served promptly and efficiently!

Went to this restaurant with family and kids. The staff were really moody…no smile no engagement…management should train staff as they are in the hospitality business and it ruins the entire experience if the service whilst good is not given with a smile. Felt like they were not happy to serve us… The food was ok but I guess with the environment being the way it was the entire experience of going out to celebrate a special event was subdued. Felt we couldn’t enjoy the moment without scorns from the staff. Not a place I would recommend for a big party and especially if you are celebrating a special event!

Off the cuff visit, local ish to where we live. Usual rushed courses. Keen to turn tables. No real customer service or welcome. £15 for Veg Duck!!! Steamed rice tasted like cardboard Probably not the worst Chinese I have been to but nothing to make us want to return! Male server did not even utter a thank you when paying bill!

Ordered a takeaway for £31 with 10% discount for collection which got ripped off with an additional charge £3.15 for prawn crackers. Horrible customer service. Smoked chicken was horrible compared to any other Chinese restaurants. All other Chinese restaurants give prawn crackers free as part of takeout. Don’t go to this place

Been to this restaurant a few time this year. But this time we had Terrible service, food was average not great. They got one dish wrong and when we complained they said no that is want you ordered and told us they will replace the dish but we will still have to pay for it. Customer service is really bad, we do not recommend this restaurant and we will let all our friends and family know not to every go to this place ever again. So disappointed.

This restaurant is disgusting. I ordered a dish that I did not like and asked for it to be taken off the bill. The manager spent 1 hour arguing with me telling me it was my fault and maybe I was just full and that is why the I didnt like the dish. She then went on to accuse me of not being able to afford the meal and maybe that's why I was asking for the dish to be removed. This was the worst service I have ever received from any restaurant and I will definitely never go back. The staff are the worst and this place should be shut down.

Had our order delivered. On arrival it was stone cold and uncooked. All chicken dishes were pink. Threw the whole £30 order in the bin. Highly unimpressed as it was a dinner for a family of 4 with 2 small children. When calling up to complain and requesting a refund. They was rude and stated they would come and collect the food to which I replied it went straight in the bin. Was basically told in other words that they can’t help with a refund. Absolutely disgusted with the response I received regarding the issues as I’ve had food from them before and it’s been fine. WILL NOT BE ORDERING AGAIN.

First time here. Went due to reading reviews which were all great. Good portion sizes. Food was super tasty and staff were very attentive. It was my aunts birthday and they put a candle in her dessert which was a lovely surprise. Will definitely be back.

Really enjoyed lunch at Tai Pan today. We were walk-ins, but they found us a table. We ordered a large mixture of food between six of us, and all the plates were delicious, and completely empty by the end. The price was very reasonable, and the staff were really friendly and helpful, so if we're ever in the area we'll be sure to eat here again.

Food was nice but service was very poor. To begin with we were completely ignored. Had to find a waiter to order. Then had to find a waiter for some water. Then had a huge wait between 1st and main course. Then had to find a waiter for the bill. Then when we told them we didn't want to pay service they argued with us! Appalling. Also really unhelpful that they wouldn't do 1 set veg meal

In this Chinese restaurant they tell me that I only have 20 minutes to eat and then that I can only order one dish. Later when I don't want to pay service charge ,they tell me that it is mandatory, when I tell them no,they tell me that next time they don't work for free,I should take it away....How little shame these Chinese have.

This is the 2nd time I've been here and last time was great. This time we went as a group of 10 and were looked after by Feni. Her service was outstanding and she really looked after us. Always a step ahead of what we needed. The food was great too especially the Tom yum soup and crispy duck! Nice decor and atmosphere too.

Amazing chinese food. Always never disappoints. Only negative thing is that getting service takes alot of time. We were a big group and sat in the seperate section of the restaurant and hardly anyone ever came up to ask how we were doing or needed anything else. Considering they gave us the table for 2 hours we spent alot of time waiting for service. They should hire more staff.

A main stay in Northwood! Great local Chinese restaurant

Came here on a Friday night for dinner. I would urge anyone to make a reservation beforehand as it does get busy. We got the sesame prawn toast and softshell crab to start which were so crunchy and well seasoned. We also got the har gau (prawn dumplings) which were also really nice, I would definitely recommend. We got the quarter duck which was sensational, crispy skin, so tender and delicious. Unfortunately, the beef sea spice chilli sauce was not chilli and it lacked real flavour- it was almost watery- this was the downfall of the meal for us. We also got plain rice. The service was good and the food came out quick, just didn’t like that the main came first. All in all our bill came to £73 for two without drinks which is reasonable. Definitely a good place to try some duck pancakes. Parking outside is free after 6:30pm

The best Chinese you will ever taste. Exception service. We celebrated a birthday here tonight and the manager wearing the suit was extremely accommodating. We love the food here it’s all fresh. We will be back soon!

Unfortunately if you complain at this restaurant about the service and refuse to pay service charge they will illegally ban you in contravention to trading standard protocol which stipulates that a customer can refuse service charge, but not at Tai Pan!, Yet on the website it says service charged and is paid at your discretion, is lies as Tai pan does not allow its customers to use its discretion. The service charge is mandatory and the minute you complain and refuse to pay service charge they will gang up on you humiliate and ban you . Sadly, the useless trading standard have done nothing as this is tai pan misleading customers, on service charge policy!, and lieing about as no discretion is allowed but a BAN if you challenge them on service, so be prepared to pay even if the service is terrible sorry NO DISCRETION ALLOWED!,

Very rude staff. I asked for a pot of chilli oil with my takeaway and was practically told off like a child by the woman at the desk, who said we were meant to ask for it when ordering and pay extra. After explaining that the order was large and surely one tiny pot of oil should be included (as it is in every other restaurant), I was finally given one. But it doesn’t end there. When I got home I found that one dish had nuts sprinkled on it despite confirming 3 times that there should be no nuts on the food since one person has a severe allergy.

Can’t believe I’ve not given Tai Pan a review as yet. Our local Chinese….of course it’s westernised but quality is up there. Love Fion, Fanny and the rest of the team. Wife’s birthday was made very special. Thanks guys. Proper duck spring rolls and char shui pork is delicious.

Lovely Chinese food which has maintained its high standards compared to other local similar restaurants. The prices are high but the quality is up to scratch. An extensive vegetarian menu and the salt&pepper broccoli is particularly good.

Went to Taipan in Northwood , to celebrate my husbands birthday, when I called to book they said . Table is only available for 1Hr n 45mins, we thought that was enough time since they are always on time when we have ordered food on many occasions . Last night, whilst we knew about the timings , they continued to tell us in-between courses it was alright to hold fire for 5-10mins as we were conscious of timings, they even said to us not to worry that we can hold on for 5 mins before ordering our next course. Well, low and behold , we reached 15mins prior to our end time and was advised, we have to leave in next 10mins and to order our next course, of-course we did not! Really disappointed on a number of levels .. we decided to leave, and paid for what we had ate, the waitress threw my credit card at me as we refused to pay the service charge, and did not even give us our receipt. We’ve been going to Taipan in over 10years, shame on Taipan , shame on not considering your loyal customers, more importantly Taipan is like cash register , they have no idea of loyal customers and for waitress that threw my credit card at me with no receipt , I wish I had thrown it back at her

Great food here with a very broad choice and clear menu for vegetarians. Service was very efficient. Perhaps a little too efficient, as did feel rushed at times.

After complaining that our take away was off to the point the food had bad smell and slimy texture the manager asked if we could take the food back for her to examine. On arrival she refused to accept that the food was off and I was treated with rude comments from herself. It was an appalling display of management, to the point she went on to make accusations to myself of putting water in the food to make it seem bad. Never in my life have I witnessed such a poor service from a restaurant that is supposed to be reputable. completely unacceptable.

Good selection and polite and friendly service

Good but some dishes can be a bit bland e.g. spare ribs, spring rolls and chicken wings. Duck wrap and lettuce wrap are very good. Pricey but good ambience for a special occasion. House champagne very drinkable.

Excellent food and service. Could have more for vegetations compared to some modern restaurants, which is how rate eateries. Go for the vegetation set menu on your first visit, which is nearly vegan (egg in noodles). They'll make reasonable swaps if asked.

CHECK your bills THOROUGHLY especially when in a large group with kids!!! They con you by adding extra portions of items you have already ordered thinking you won't notice. You get charged for 3 when only ordered 1 portion. Brocolli was old and refried, food was not freshly cooked as came out in less than 3mins. I've been a regular here for many years but their food and service is not what it use to be.

I was recommended this high end restuarant by a friend and was not disappointed at all. Very busy place but well serviced. The food was very tasty. Expensive but very well worth it. We shall definitely be going there again.

Not cheap but very good food and we've become regulars. Simple to order online and collect at a specified time. Prices going up like everywhere else. Had to wait 15 min beyond agreed collection time so not quite as efficient as usual.

Had a wonderful lunch there, with the highlight being their toffee banana, which has sadly been removed from so many Chinese menus over the last few years. Will definitely be returning

The staff are still first class but the food sadly is not. Singapore Noodles (my favourite) excellent but meat tasteless and chewy, clearly prices have risen but quality of food has not. Will never go back

Incredible atmosphere and the food was delicious. Only giving it 4* because we were given a bad table initially and not moved until we hassled the staff and spoke to the manager. Otherwise really impressed overall and would return!

The food was very quick to arrive and tasted amazing too! I couldn't fault a single dish we ordered. They have an extensive list of vegetarian options and I would personally recommend the mock duck (shown in pic). The service staff were very friendly and professional.

The food at Tai Pan is excellent as is the service. On the whole staff are polite and accommodating to your needs. The only thing that let's them down is their table turnaround...you do feel rushed to eat and go rather than make an evening of it catching up with friends

Food was good and pleasant ambiance. Service was good too, so I will definitely be returning as this place is local to me. The Ma-Po bean curd was super tasty especially as the chef made it nice and spicy 🌶

Shared a couple of tables with relatives and friends on Sunday night. Nice selection of good tasty food in a warm and cosy environment. Service was a bit rushed which spoiled the night a little .... fealt a bit like we were being rushed through the meal at times hence 4 star not 5 star. Would still go again as the food was very tasty, but will ask the staff a little more firmly to allow us more time to sellect our dishes and to enjoy them at our pace not theirs.

Total bunch of cowboys. So many people have said that if you refuse to pay the service charge as by law in accordance with the consumer law of 2015 as you are legally allowed to do so, Tai Pan will still ban you. This ban for deductions of service charge is illegal by Tai Pan and perhaps they should be a litigation against the owner Mr Lai . His staff waiters and waitresses are vindictive and vengeful as the mantra is, if customers refuse to pay service charge bully them first, be rude and ban them. Must remind Tai Pan this is UK where we have consumer laws to prevent such breach’s and bullying. Avoid this place unless you are prepared to accept poor service and being bullied for speaking your mind in a democracy. Really this restaurant needs to be taken to task legally, as how can they break consumer law introduced in 2015 which stipulates that as a diner you are within your rights to deduct service charge. Tai pan is making up its law . Also when you complain they will talk rudely in Chinese amongst them selves and shout, typically like a Chinese fish market place. No culture or respect towards customers at all. Sadly as the Chinese proverb says “ THE FISH ALWAYS ROTS FROM THE HEAD DOWNWARDS” most appropriate proverb for Tai Pan!

Not a great service such an upsetting evening celebrating our anniversary. We asked to take the service charge off and the manager got rude very quickly saying don’t come here again , eat elsewhere and next time get the food yourself from the kitchen and got very argumentative. Was shocked and appalled of the behaviour and very felt disrespected. Such a shame as the restaurant was recommended by a friend , be warned anyone going here in the future who wants there evening ruined

The worst owner/staff I have ever come across at a restaurant! I came with my friends to celebrate a reunion but the food wasn’t to our standards. Most of the food was cold and the duck was very chewy and undercooked so we asked to take the service charge off the bill. The manager then came through to ask why and when we gave her a reason she kicked off and told us not to eat here again and go to local shops and go to self checkouts!! How can she be so arrogant and condescending!! Is this the service charge I am paying for?? DO NOT VISIT AT ALL!!!

Visited for the first time last month with friends who have eaten there many times and highly recommended ........and boy were they right!!!Firstly, the service was friendly and very efficient but more importantly, every individual course was tasty and delicious.Over the years we found there has been an overuse of MSG`s and therefore everything tasted the same whether it was seafood or chicken - but not at Tai Pan.Enjoyed it so much we are returning this weekend!

Nice ambiance and good service. Reasonable price. The squid was lovely. The duck was also really good and the chicken and blackbean sauce was sublime (you must get it). I wouldnt go for the steamed dumplings because they were quite bland. Satay chicken wasnt too good either.

Foods ok but the service is catastrophic! We were the first ones in around an hr after doors opened on Saturday afternoon and the staff are incredibly rude and disinterested. We had a large party of 8 and each of us were greeted with severe attitude . A pity because was not too shabby

Table of 7 at 7pm for an annual gathering. Rushed us to get ordered, then not enough attention when extra drinks etc were required. Food ok. Not as good as last year.
