Great ornate pub (that was once a brewery and sold beer at its door) I believe as it stands now ,this is 1 refurb done about a century ago Great selection of beers 🍻🤠

Slow on food arriving, I wanted to leave and buy a sandwich. The place was clearly understaffed, considering asl the tables were reserved, with only one waiter and chef? The Ford was mediocre. Took so long to arrive and I wouldn't say it was piping hot. The pricing its very reasonable, for what you're getting though, it could be considered expensive for the quality of the meal. The waiter was helpful and keen to do things correctly. I just felt sorry for him. He did wil and nobody seemed to be uptight by the wait. I understand it's a bar, however due to the small premises the border level at times was intolerable. There's a severe lack of lighting in the ladies h toilet. Well there are actually four lights IB thre small space, they are very dim. An older lady commented to me she felt as if she could "hardly see ". The viability it's reduced due to insufficient light. I probably wouldn't go back here, there just wasn't anything special, unique or that I enjoyed enough. Add a whole, including the number of tables, length of wait, nothing special in the food department that I ordered. It wasn't unpleasant, there's other places I'd like to try.

Portions were absolutely tiny, food was cold and had no flavour. Probably the worst food I’ve ever had. Side of chips was 90% of the plate and even they had no taste. Would not recommend what so ever, absolutely disgusting

Vouchers for platter sharing hardly worth it. You can get 2 course meal for £5 from the regular menu anyway.

Lovely food, nice surroundings - service was a bit over the top bordering on harassment but still the bar is a great addition to the west side.

Visited Tables twice recently for quick pre theatre food. I had the vegan beans and rice. Very tasty and good value and next time the salad starter which was good but needed a bit more cheese. Service good. Very conveniently situated for Kings and Cameo

As at 24th July 2019 management has changed the strategy here. It's cheaper but no longer value for money. Limited menu, poor quality food and small portions (I'm a light eater !). I was returning to enjoy the pre-theatre menu and the modern stylish food and ambience, (agree totally with previous 5 star reviews and prior quality verging on high dining) but tonight was so disappointing. Don't say you haven't been warned.

We got a walk in for 5 of us. Very nice food and good service! Although the place was very quiet. Our only fault was the bread came out halfway through the meal and we had to ask for more and no butter to accompany it ? Got some only when we asked.

Great, inventive food & good value 'pre-theatre' menu. La Petite Mort has been good in past but last night I had a really outstanding meal there & it was three courses for £25 quid. Lamb belly looked like a novelty but had to try it, not a novelty, meltingly soft, flavourful and the fat balanced by a sharp anchovy tapinade. Cullen Skink Risotto had beautiful smoked haddock with leek. And the dark chocolate & candied orange balanced the sweetness of an orange posset for desert. Superb meal with not a single weak dish.

I've been there twice now and something just rubs me the right way. It's probably the food. Food at Le Petit Mort is good! Surprisingly good, in fact, considering the fairly down to earth prices and the genuinely delightful setting. First time around I tried the lunch menu (burger + soup) which was substantial enough to fill the ol' tank for a day. On the second occasion I went for something finer and the experience did not disappoint. To date, this is my favorite eating out experience in Edinburgh.

For two Saturdays we-four friends- have had lunch prior to the theatre at this small but very friendly restaurant The food is excellent &the staff could not have been more helpful with various diet problems & beyond the call of duty sorting out a taxi problem for us Thank you

We went there for the lunch menu. It was very tasty and even after just two courses I was full. The service was excellent as well. The Cullen skink risotto is delicious

A wonderful dinner at La Petite Mort! My friends & I booked in for the festive dinner menu during the Christmas period & I have to say, what a wonderful experience we had! A fantastic range of dishes and great to see they had so many gluten free options. I highly recommend the Roasted Fillet of Salmon with goats cheese and pea crushed potatoes - it was delicious! Service was very attentive & the restaurant had a lovely cosy atmosphere - can't wait to go back!

Cosy romantic meal. My wife and I enjoyed a brilliant evening here this week. Having never been before we were pleasantly surprised by the lovely interior and the fact the restaurant is tucked in behind one of our favourite bars! The food is quite fancy - with prices very reasonable, so it was a perfect choice for a wee festive date night. Service was charming, as were the after dinner whiskies. We'll be back - thanks! :)

A Christmas Eve Catastrophe: After 2 phone calls weeks before to confirm they were serving dinner, we booked a table for 5 for 7:30 only to be greeted by a locked door. Eventually they let us in to break the bad news that the kitchen had in fact closed at 7pm and they would not honour the booking. Then, even worse, they concocted stories about phoning us multiple times and leaving messages on our landline (not true). I see from other reviews that this has happened with other bookings. Clearly customer service is not a strong point - one star is one too many and we shall not return.

The food was excellent; and it was likely my fault for not checking, but the online lunch menu was 14 for three courses, but, as it is Christmas, it was 20 for the same.

Cosy restaurant-bistro. Warm decor and ambience. Very friendly welcome and service even though we were a bit late. Excellent choice of drinks too. But what was and is best is the quality of the cuisine. Starters - my wife had the roast cauliflower-truffle soup, I had the ballotine (more like a galantine,really) of rabbit. Both delicious. Then we had the beautifully grilled cod with goats cheese and chorizo sauce . Yummy! Dessert was fabulous - a coconut mousse with panacotta and little brownie morsels to round off the meal. All presented artistically. The owner-chef deserves all praise for the blend of French and Scottish offering. Good choice of malt whiskies. Will certainly visit again.

Wow! This place is an unbelievable find. Especially for the pre theatre menu. All of the dishes were Michelin style quality. Presentation sublime. Service friendly and prompt. We had the incredible Cullen skink spring rolls and cauliflower and truffle soup. The mains of ox cheek and sliced flat iron with dauphinoise potatoes was beautiful. The desserts were great. Two very very minor issues were the profiteroles were a little bit dry and meat was under seasoned but easily fixed with salt and pepper on table. Will become a regular visitor here for my trips to Edinburgh.

Absolutely fantastic hidden gem! Myself and my wife went for our anniversary dinner. We simply couldn't fault it. Our server was lovely with great knowledge of food and wine. Each course freshly cooked to order. Stunning presentation. Very romantic night out to celebrate our special occasion. Will definitely be back. Highly recommend!!

This is a hidden gem! We were directed to all of the normal tourist spots for dinner but decided to check it out online. We stayed at a hotel close by and happened to see this place on the map. The online menu and reviews prompted us here and I speak for my whole family when I say we were not disappointed. The portions were a little small but their qualities more than made up for it. The unique combinations of ingredients was exciting and irresistible. Every bite was a delight and discovery of the intricacies of the dish. Well done to the chef! Also, the plating was a feast for the eyes and I have to admit that I left feeling quite full.

My wife and I initially enjoyed the food however later it didn't agree with my wife. I was fine. Service was great and attentive good gluten free alternatives

Slightly hidden of the main road is this nice gem. We had lunch here and all I can say is wow... what nice meal we had. Congrats to the chef, the flavours are so nicely achieved and such nice presentation.

Fabulous pre theatre and great service.

Fabulous food. The scalops and the wood pigieon starters were beautifully cooked. The venison main was melt in your mouth and the depth of flavour was amazing as was the sea bass. The deserts are tasty too �. All for a very reasonable price.

The food is ok but not spectacular. I had sea bass and there were 3 tiny pieces of it and it was 17 pounds. The desserts were pretty good. The waiter was not what you would expect to get for these prices. Not the friendliest one. Overall, a nice place.but expensive for what it is.

Went for lunch and were there at 12.04 pm.... They are supposed to open at 12 pm. Door was locked but lights on and a bar maid standing inside. I tried knocking to try and ask if they were going to open. I was completely and rudely ignored. So I'm afraid I won't be visiting this time or during future visits with clients.

Had a very ebjoyable Sunday lunch with 4 friends. The food was excellent well presented, fresh and great taste. We initial planned a light lunch but had all 3 course all well executed, along with 2 bottles of wine and glass of desert wine. Service was very good. Now I have found this it will be a regular when friends visit or fancy a nice meal at a very reasonable cost.

The place is lovely, decor is cozy and romantic, some of the tables are old sowing machine tables and it has so much potential! But in the end the food isn't good enough. We had the ravioli for starters and it didn't taste of ANYTHING, even lacking salt. My husband ordered the steak and he was happy with it but my chicken was the driest I've ever had, close to inedible. The staff is lovely and the place is charming but we are very disappointed in the food.

High quality food for great value. We had two courses for only £12.95. Staff were excellent and the atmosphere was lovely.

As part of a surprise birthday dinner we were indeed pleasantly surprised to be seated at La Petite Mort. There was a really warm welcome and we were very well taken care of. The girl serving us was extremely knowledgeable and could explain drinks and dishes to the finest detail, including little enticing morsels of flavour explanations. They serve a menu choice of 3 starters, mains and desserts. The highlight for myself was the rare cooked, flat iron steak. Perfectly cooked and extremely tender. Their cocktail list is a joy to read. They do offer a large range of classic cocktails made to measure and personal preferences. I was very pleased with my Earl Grey Old Fashioned (though I personally prefer the single large rock of ice) My biggest surprise was how reasonable the prices are compared to other places of similar quality (Kitchin, Scran & Scally et al) The food and service is certainly up to par. Sure these other places have won awards, but I did experience a similar (if not BETTER) experience in La Petite Mort - and as they are still quite new, they may collect their foodie rewards later on. Highly recommended and certainly worthy of revisiting often.
